But aside from all the great music, we also want you top engage in the local community. Partial proceeds from the Block Party go to support Home Alive and The Vera Project - two amazing non-profits that have sprung up out of the Seattle music community. If you don't know about these projects go check them out at www.theveraproject.org, and www.homealive.org. They need your support.

The Block Party also strives to get the local music community engaged in local politics, offering voter registration and booths from progressive political organizations, and progressive, pro-music politicians introducing bands and building relationships with younger voters. This year we also have Music For America joining up with the SEIU to present information on healthcare, an issue greatly impacting the music community where studies have shown less than 40% of musicians have health insurance, along with speakers from the ACLU, who in the age of Bush are more important than ever.

So while you're at the Block Party enjoying the great music, take the time to find out about the local non-profits involved, listen to and meet the local politicians, and make sure you're registered to vote in the upcoming election.

Mary Alice Cooley Print Art Collection @ Bellevue
Cornish College of the Arts in partnership with the Bellevue Place Merchants' Association presents a selection of Print Art from the Mary Alice Cooley Collection.
The Mary Alice Cooley Print Art Collection, accumulated over the past 15 years, contains over 200 original prints and reveals the quality and diversity of work produced by students at Cornish College of the Arts. Established through students' contribution of their work, selected by Cornish Print faculty, Professors Kathleen Rabel and John Overton, this growing collection is integral to the Print Art curriculum for study and research.
The collection is named for Mary Alice Cooley, a former print student and alumna of Cornish College of the Arts. Inspired by her interest in art and by her dauntless courage, the Richard Cooley family and friends established a memorial fund in her name, which has been used to support, catalog, and archive this collection.

A Capella Karaoke at the Alibi Room
A little advanced notice on what is just about the best thing ever:
A Capella Karaoke at the Alibi Room Friday July 27. $3, 21+, 10pm,
hosted by Miss H. Last month saw the debut of the world's first ever A
Capella Karaoke, where people wearing headphones sing along to their
favorite songs in an otherwise silent room. Participants are encouraged
to bring songs which are commonly known as this invariably leads to
group singalongs, handclapping, guitarmouth, and yes, even dancing. A
Capella Karaoke is the most fun you can have with your clothes on.
I am working on a microdocumentary and will post a clip at
acapellakaraoke.com soon.

Richard Hugo House Presents: Kim Addonizio and Rebecca Brown
Richard Hugo House is thrilled to present poet, novelist and National Book Award finalist Kim Addonizio and one of Seattle’s favorite authors, Rebecca Brown, for a reading on Saturday, July 28 at 5 p.m. Kim Addonizio’s latest book, “My Dreams Out in the Street”—a novel—hit bookstores this month and she will be giving a reading and teaching a workshop at Hugo House on her way to the Port Townsend Blues Festival.
Kim Addonizio—whose book of poetry, “Tell Me,” was nominated for the National Book Award—will read from her new novel, but she has also promised to read some of her (and our) favorite poems.

Addonizio’s work draws from a wide variety of experiences. Her previous occupations include waitress, fry cook, tennis instructor, Kelly Girl, attendant for the disabled and auto parts store bookkeeper, among others. She loves music; she’s raised a daughter and she can’t stop spending too much money on eating out. Her poems range from first love to lost love, and touch on everything in between—raising a child, losing a parent, recovering from a hangover—to name just a few. Her first novel, “Little Beauties,” featured a neurotic 30-something divorcée, a teen-aged single mother and a newborn with a definite point of view. In addition to the novels and seven collections of poetry, Addonizio has also edited an anthology on a topic dear to her heart: tattoos.

Rebecca Brown—a former Hugo House writer-in-residence and now a favorite and frequent guest—will open the night for Kim Addonizio. Like Kim, Rebecca’s work covers a range of territory. She is the author of 10 books, including “The Last Time I Saw You,” “The Dogs: A Modern Bestiary” and “The Terrible Girls.” She has also collaborated with painter Nancy Keifer for “Woman in Ill Fitting Wig” and has written a libretto for The Onion Twins. She joined Hugo House in October of 2006 and delivered bright new writing on false recollections and shared her love of music (and her collection of Beatle’s memorabilia) in a panel discussion led by L.A. Times pop columnist, Ann Powers. At Hugo House, Rebecca most recently taught a 10-week master class for writers who are working to complete book projects.
Jul. 28 -Kim Addonizio reads with Rebecca Brown. Poet, novelist and National Book Award finalist Kim Addonizio joins Rebecca Brown and reads at Richard Hugo House for the first time. 5 p.m. $7 ($5 members). Richard Hugo House, 1634 11th Ave. (206) 322-7030 www.hugohouse.org

Fast Heart Mart @ The Hideout

Greg writes:
Dear Friends,

Martin Stamper and Roblyn Crawford are somewhere between Missoula and Seattle.
It's a big stretch of highway with not a lot in between.
They are driving in a van, heading west, foot on the pedal, towards Seattle, to the Hideout.
Martin sings and plays acoustic guitar. Roblyn plays stand up snare.
Martin has a pacemaker so his heart doesn't beat too fast and kill him.
He sings songs about quitting your job, dropping out of society and insects.
They are from Albuquerque and together they are Fast Heat Mart.

On Saturday, July 28th, Martin and Roblyn will be in Seattle for one very special show at the Hideout.
Critics call Fast Heart Mart things like unconventional, unusual, unpredictable, inventive, original.
I'm no critic, but I think their sound is raw and highly contagious, like Ebola or Chicken Pox.
Martin lists his musical influences as Doc Watson, Ramblin Jack Elliot, Nirvana, Bill Monroe and Beck-
but really his sound is all his own.
All you have to do is go to their website and listen to Jawbreaker Sky. That's all.
It's all the convincing you'll need. Oh, and it is a FREE show (must be 21+ with proper id).
Please join us this Saturday night and help us offer up a warm welcome to Fast Heart Mart.
Music starts around 9:00, and space is limited so come early and claim some space.

Groundtruthing @ Soil
Margot Kelley, Bruce Myren, Tara Rodgers, Thom Heileson, Vaughn Bell, Sarah Kavage, Nicole Kistler
Curated by: Vaughn Bell

August 2-26, 2007
opening reception, Thursday August 2, 6-9PM
Groundtruthing brings us artists from across the country, each with a different approach to the idea of going “on location.” With current mapping technology such as GIS, remote sensing, and GPS devices we can know the surface of the earth with more detail and specificity then ever. The artists in this exhibition access mapping technologies and data as a resource in examining geography as a personal and social phenomenon. Using media including photography, video, sound, and performance, these artists explore the significance of topography. The work gives us an experience of both the journey and the destination, and develops new narratives of how we relate to the places we visit, inhabit and explore.

Margot Kelley is a photographer based in Cambridge, MA whose photographic project, “Local Treasures,” began when she learned about “geocacheing” a game in which individuals leave treasures in special places for others to find using gps receivers. Kelley asked “What would America look like when mapped by thousands of individuals who are highlighting their own preferred places?” Her photographs bring us a glimpse of these places.

Bruce Myren, based in Boston, uses photography to show us a cross section of the country, drawn along the 40th parallel and selected based on the points of intersection with lines of longitude. His large-format photographs bring us panoramas of these normally unrecognized places, made significant by their location on the coordinate plane.

Tara Rodgers is a sound artist currently residing in Montreal. “Places I’ve lived in and Traveled To, 1973-2005”, is an audiovisual composition tracking her own movement patterns throughout her life. The data of latitude, longitude and altitude are translated into a sound and visual composition, a waveform representation of the movement through space.

Seattle-based Thom Heileson’s two-channel video, “Scend” interplays the experience of ascending and descending. Shot traveling from the lowest point in Death Valley to an elevation of one mile above sea level, the literal transition in altitude is transformed through the mental impacts of the drive into a hypnotic, perpetual journey.

In the collaborative project Watermark, Seattle artists Vaughn Bell, Sarah Kavage and Nicole Kistler map the line through Seattle that could be the city’s future shoreline. Using topographic data and estimates of possible sea-level rise in various climate change scenarios, they delineate where the floods could rise. Performance actions mark the line throughout downtown Seattle. With this piece, viewers can become participants to go on location themselves, through a performance action or a walking tour.

Resistance @ Punch
Resistance

Andrew Kaufman and Donna Stack
Aug 2 – Sept 2, 2007
Opening Reception: Thursday, Aug 2, 2007, 5-8 pm
Artist talk: 2 pm on Sat, Aug 4, 2007

Punch gallery presents Resistance, a two-person exhibition by convergent artists Andrew Kaufman and Donna Stack, who have jointly distilled wide-ranging ideas into sculpture, video, works on paper, and installation. Although they work as individual artists, Resistance combines the mutual interests of both artists, which mediates political currents into contemplative forms. Each artist was inspired by recent domestic and international events, and question ethical failings experienced at home and abroad. Kaufman’s video Hold On, Hold Up, functions on a level of simplicity which defies the struggle he undertakes to hang onto the weight of his body or support the weight of a bar, and which speaks to the struggle of the human condition. Stack’s installation piece (shouldn’t throw stones) directly questions notions of hypocrisy as a video displays one-minute clips of events ranging from the Twin Tower attacks to the Indian Ocean Tsunami inside a life-sized stained glass pup tent.

Andrew Kaufman and Donna Stack both received their MFA from the University of South Florida in 2002. Andrew Kaufman has exhibited nationally and internationally and his work was included in The Fragile Species at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts. He is also the recipient of a 2007 Artist Trust GAP Award. Donna Stack has also exhibited nationally and internationally and was recently included in the exhibition Dichotomic at Gallery Korea in New York City. She is also the recipient of a 2004 and 2007 Artist Trust GAP Award. Both artists live in Ellensburg, WA and teach at Central Washington University.

Piratepalooza in Redmond

Oh boy, I don't know what to do about this one. The invite sounded like a private party to me. But then I saw that the GMP is also recommending it:
Ahoy, Guerrillas!

Although we're on a mini-vacation right now, other Guerrillas are hard at work making sure there are costume parties to be had. GMP regulars Suz, Doug, and Trish are throwing another of their infamous parties at a home in Redmond, Washington - and they want to see you there! Here's the official info:
Come all ye swarthy pirates, sexy mermaids and mishievious creatures of the sea! Suz (Suzapalooza) , Doug (Cool D) and Trish (La Nell) are pooling their talents and resources to plan another swashbuckling good time this Saturday, July 21, at 8:00 PM!

They want to see everyone dressed up as Pirates, Mermaids, Sea Monsters and Creatures of the Sea. Prizes will be awarded to the best costumes!
Island appetizers will be provided and Suz will make a batch of her famous rum punch. Please bring your own poison and snacks to share. We especially want to meet fun, friendly, outgoing people! Donations of rum, gold, and special talents are gladly accepted.
In the spirit of Captain Jack Sparrow, we may even be graced with a few acts of entertainment.
If you and yer shipmates want permission to board, please email Suz at suzfabulous@yahoo.com . Please make sure everyone in your crew is 21+.
And for those of you with more Southwardly inclinations, this Saturday is also GMP in Portland, Oregon, with a theme of 'Christmas in July'! For more info, go to http://myspace.com/gmppdx

Kukula and Nicoletta Ceccoli @ Roq la Rue
Roq la Rue is pleased to present two artists who create paintings of young women in fanciful, melancholic situations.
Nicoletta Ceccoli (San Marino, Italy) has made a name for herself illustrating children's books, including winning the prestigious Italien Anderson Prize for best illustrator of the year in 2001. She recently has been showing paintings in US galleries and has already has already garnered great demand for her allegorical, luminous, dream-like paintings. Painted in acrylic on paper, each work is meticulously crafted to the point where brush stokes disappear, and each image seems to float within it's own hazy light. This is her first major US gallery exhibition.
Kukula (San Francisco) takes a darker spin, placing her sexy/sickly doll-like subjects in situations usually only one step away from disaster. In this particular series, she explores the idea of the "last hour before death", using death as a metaphor for both a beginning and an end. She has painted most of her paintings in a 5" x 7" format to better play of the concept of her characters final snapshots, and the work will be displayed in a memento mori/funeral type setting.

TIKKKI @ BLVD Gallery
TONIGHT We are having a LUAU reception for the opening of "TIKKKI" at
BLVD Gallery. Come and enjoy great art and good times.
BLVD Gallery presents
TIKKKI
New Works By Iosefatu Sua and Darvin Vida
July 13 - August 4, 2007
BLVD gallery is proud to present TIKKKI, a show of new works by
Iosefatu Sua and Darvin Vida that is a view of tikki culture from an
authentic Pacific island perspective. The imagery for TIKKKI will
revolve around the use of shameful imagery from Americas past wed with
a Polynesian aesthetic to challenge and bring into sharp focus the
disparity between reality and Tiki culture. Artist Iosefatu Sua first
conceived of this concept as a response to what he viewed as a skewed
and often condescending ideal of Island culture that is presented as
Tiki Culture. Iosefatu desired to create a body of work that would
expose the racial fetishism and cultural misappropriation that Exotica
represents with its view of Pacific Islanders as Noble Savages and
hyper sexualized Hula girls. These caricatures have nothing to do with
the harsh reality of the rampant poverty and loss of culture in
Islander communities and serve to perpetuate these circumstances by
removing the focus on real people and supplanting the proud traditions
with Kitsch and cocktails.

Iosefatu Suas fascination with art was inspired mostly by the
rebelliousness and bright colors of graffiti/urban art; an art form he
first discovered as a young boy while riding his BMX bike through the
city streets of Wellington, New Zealand. Suas Samoan born parents were
immigrants who worked several jobs to keep him and his brother away
from the impoverished neighborhoods, which were populated by the local
natives and Polynesian immigrants. His works mostly consist of
sculpture, painting, and installation. By mixing a variety of cultural
and mythological iconography and storytelling, Iosefatu explores
personal insecurities, fears, and frustrations influenced by social and
cultural stigmas such as poverty, immigration, and criminalization.
For Darvin Vida art started because of the refusal of his Mother to
constantly draw the Black Tiger Squadron fighter plane from
StarBlazers. From that point on he realized he could do drawings for
himself. His early years started off tracing Captain America comic
books and GI Joe Characters. In the late eighties Darvin was shown a
poloroid photo of graffiti from San Diego that sparked off a whole new
direction for his creativity. Today Darvin mixes these early influences
with the cultural art that reflects his Filipino heritage. Darvin Roca
Vida works with a wide variety of techniques, which include: sculpting,
painting, carving, etching, and printing.

Comidas on Saturday, July 14 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM. In the late 70s,

Rock Lottery 03 @ Neumos
Hello Party Volcano,
Good/Bad Archive Project presents a benefit for The Vera Project
...
The Rock Lottery is simple, but effective. Twenty-five hand picked musicians meet at 10:00AM at the evening's performance venue. These volunteers are organized into five bands through a lottery based chance selection. The five different groups are then released to practice at different locations. The musicians have twelve hours to create a band name and three to five songs (with a one cover song limit). The bands will then return to the venue and perform what they have created in front of a waiting audience.
The twenty-five musicians included in this experiment are carefully selected in an attempt to represent a wide variety of musical styles. This event will bring together many facets of the music community that may seem incompatible, as well as musicians whose interests may conflict. The challenge for these participants is to try and go beyond their personal and musical differences and work together to create a unified group project that still contains the personal styles of each of its members.
The Seattle Rock Lottery is a benefit, with all proceeds going to The Vera Project. The musicians chosen to participate are unpaid volunteers. The participants are chosen by the Rock Lottery participant committee with suggestions from the staff of The Vera Project and other members of Seattle's music community.

Giving Back at Waid's

James writes:
Hello everyone,

As you may know I am busy with ghost tours and the Summer is only just
beginning. What you may not know is that I producing a fundraiser for
the first time! Which includes a night of music and dancing. This has
been a huge undertaking for me, from designing the postcards, website,
working with other volunteers to create the night, to booking the
music and getting the press interested. I am hoping for a good show
of people at the event and hope you will consider coming to support
not only my first venture into this kind of thing, but a great cause.
I am doing this completely as a volunteer and all the proceeds from
tickets sales go to the cause.

The cause is awesome: My friend, a doctor at Harborview, travels back
and forth to Madagascar to volunteer at Andranomadio Hosiptal that has
very few resources. He returns this August and hopes to create a
larger partnership in the future with Seattle and the hospital. While
Seattle is drawing large global health interests and companies to the
region, it's people like Doctor Roesel that are at the front lines.
All of the ticket sales go to the work he is doing, to bring medical
supplies, training books and even help pay for some of the children's
school fees of families working at the hospital.

So, you want to come, right?
Well, I haven't even told you about the music or the venue! I am
MCing, Funklove from Marmalade is bringing together a team of
musicians for a night of improvised danceable funk music. At midnight,
my friend Brenna is Djing, she goes by DJ bwonder jones and Dj's at
places like the Buddha Bar in Seattle. It's at Waid's Haitian
Restaurant at 12th and Jefferson and it's on July 14th, a Saturday,
starting at 8pm.
Here are more details:
On Bastille Day, July 14th Waid's Haitian Restaurant is hosting an
event with improvised funk music by some of the best musicians in
Seattle. Ticket sales ($20 at the door) go to support a hospital in
Madagascar and the work of a Seattle doctor.
Avec Amour: Giving Back at Waid's

Funklove and The Golden Club Social, DJ bwonder jones
Saturday, Bastille Day, July 14th 2007
1212 E Jefferson, Seattle WA
206-328-6463

About the music:
Funklove and the Golden Club Social is a live
improvised soul funk and rare groove outfit featuring a revolving
ensemble of local legendary members of Jumbalaya, Das Rut, Spirit Tuck
and the currently undisputed weekly soul/funk party, MARMALADE.
DJ bwonder jones takes the stage as well. bwonder jones is a Seattle
born barfly-artist-scientist-poet who has been performing music since
first grade. She first began Djing at Burning Man, when her friend
Sweet Chris Bell let her take the decks. She spins every Friday night at
Buddha Belltown. For the event she will be mixing some funk music into
her set.

About Madagascar:
The world's fourth largest island, Madagascar, is a
Republic struggling under debt, environmental degradation,
exploitation of its natural resources, and widespread poverty. One in
seven children will die before the age of five, and half of all
children suffer from malnutrition. Childbirth kills 1 out of every 26
women. Ancient scourges such as the plague, cholera, and polio still
stalk the populace; infections such as tuberculosis, schistosomiasis,
and malaria are also major health problems. Health resources, where
they exist at all, are extremely limited.

About the Hospital:
Andranomadio Hospital, a small hospital and clinic
in the center of the island treats over 20,000 people annually.
Seattle Doctor, David Roesel is a welcome colleague and friend who
works side by side with local doctors and nurses caring for
desperately ill patients, and holds training sessions for the staff to
improve the quality of care. He returns to Andranomadio Hospital in
August 2007 bringing much-needed medical supplies, training materials,
and assisting in the care of the sick. His long-term goal is to forge
partnerships which will allow Andranomadio to develop into a national
center of excellence in medical care. He plans to bring medical care
out into the rural communities, where there are currently no health
facilities at all.

About the benefit:
Avec Amour: Giving Back at Waid's is part of a
larger mission for Waid Sanvil (Waid's) as well, his personal mission
is to forge community alliances in Seattle and produce events that
support global health, eventually supporting health resources in Haiti
which suffer under similar conditions as Madagascar. As a close friend
to Doctor Roesel, producing this event brings him closer to this
mission. At the event there will be a raffle with great items that
have been donated by local businesses including; acupuncture sessions,
Underground tours, and travel vouchers. Waid's also serves excellent
food.

Erotic Shorts @ The Little Red Studio

John writes:
The Little Red Studio is having their first evening ever of live theatre, and
they are only running the show once.
Usually, they run performance art pieces - aerialists, poets, dancers, etc.
This night will be short form live theatre pieces. I am somewhat
prejudiced (being the author of one of the pieces), but This is a VERY
talented group of actors, and the show has some wonderful moments of humor
in it. I'd love to see a number of the party volcano members there.

This is cut from the Little Red Studio website:
Erotic Shorts will take place on Friday, July 6th and promises to be a
wonderful foray into the theatrical side of Little Red Studio. Themes
visited include the effects of art on the psyche, polyamory, android ethics,
and even teenagers in lust. All the plays were written by local playwrights
and you'll see actors from both inside the LRS troupe as well as from the
greater Seattle theater community. We can't wait to share this brand new
event with you!

Spin the Bottle @ Annex Theatre

Bret writes:

I've started a project: Every day for a year, I'm going to draw a
picture. It doesn't matter what I draw; I'm just going to draw every day
and see if, after 365 days, my drawing improves. And I'd like to involve
you in this project.

Anyone who sends me their address -- their snail mail address, not their
electronic one -- I'll send you a postcard with a drawing on it at some
point this year. I can't promise when, nor can I promise the picture will
be any good, but if you're like me, getting something personal in the mail
is one of life's small delights. I promise I won't use your address for
any purpose but this (hell, Annex can't afford to do mailings any more).
The first 10 people to send me their addresses will get TWO postcards over
the coming year, at least a few weeks apart. Twice the postal pleasure!

In the meantime, come enjoy some other small delights this Friday night,
July 6, at 11 pm, as Spin the Bottle presents:

>> The neo-bluegrass hayseed sophistication of THE HALF BROTHERS!
>> Rolling hips and swaying bellies from HANDS OF KALI!
>> Song/film extravaganzas from ERIN STEWART and CELENE RAMADAN!
>> Beach frolics from MARY PURDY!
>> Madness on roller skates from JEANETTE MAUS!
>> Sultry songwriting from TAMARA LEWIS!
>> Softrock exultation from MARK SIANO & CO!
>> Luscious smut from luscious AMBER WOLFE (a.k.a. MISS MAMIE LAVONA!
>> Something involving velcro from GUDE/LAURANCE!
>> And more, more, more!

All held together by the unpredictable clouds and sunshine of our host,
BRUCE HALL!

Lisa Raimondi - Opening Reception @ Cafe Racer

My dear friend, Lisa Raimondi, is back from xxx years in New York and Cafe Racer is hosting her first photography show since her return!
Hope to see you at Cafe Racer!
Cissy

Artist Statement:

"There are several reasons why I photograph women in the nude. One, as
a young adult,
my own experience as a photographer's model made me feel tawdry and pushed me to
want to show womens bodie's as art in a photographic medium. I find it
tiresome to see
the way mass media portrays women as primarily sexual objects. always
using sex to sell, when there is much more to us.
The women in my photographs represent what I have been and what I have
experienced. Not merely beautiful, but also distorted, abstract,
puzzling, unattractive,
disturbing, good, bad, amazing and inspiring.
I photograph women as a multi-faceted work of art, which is what we are."

Freehold¹s Engaged Theatre Program is proud to present our summer tour of
William Shakespeare¹s Cymbeline with live music by Gino Yevdjevich of Kultur
Shock. Our production is part of our Engaged Theatre Program, which brings
theatrical performances and workshops to culturally underserved communities.
This year¹s tour will include Harborview Medical Center, New Futures at
Arbor Heights, Washington Correctional Center for Women, two units at the
Monroe Correctional Center, Echo Glen Children¹s Center as well as several
performances for the public.
Shakespeare¹s Cymbeline is a story of transformation, of being thrown into
deep uncertainty and the jewels that can emerge as a result. It is about
the journeys that we all take daughters, fathers, lovers, mothers,
brothers and countries to come home to our true authentic selves.
Cymbeline is ultimately a story of betrayal and faith, of treachery, love
and acceptance.
Freehold's Engaged Theatre program is funded in part by the Paul Allen
Family Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, 4 Culture, the Mayor's
Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs and a 2-year matching New Generations
grant, which is funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and The
Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and administered by Theatre Communication Group.
The phenomenal cast includes Noah Benezra, Precious Butiu, Reggie Jackson,
Lauren Herrick, Richard Hesik, Lara Lihiya, Kevin Moore, Marya Sea Kaminski,
Gabe Smith, Lance Spencer, Katt Tait, Beverly Thompson, Amy Thone. Directed
by Robin Lynn Smith.
Cymbeline will be performed for the public on the following dates:
Volunteer Park (15th and Aloha):
Monday, July 9th at 6:30 pm
Freehold Theatre¹s East Hall Theatre (1529 10th Ave):

Independent Exposure at the Central Cinema: Manifest Destiny
Hi Party Volcano-ers,

On Wednesday 11 July, come check out the Manifest Destiny edition of Independent Exposure at the Central Cinema. This month’s program presents a collection of films that deal with political and social issues. For instance, one film is a re-mix of a wartime Bush speech that offers a new perspective on his foreign policy. Another film is a short documentary about a Christian heavy metal band. All in all it’s probably one of the better programs we’ve screened in a while. The full runorder is below
Thanks for your interest,
reed
