"STOMPIN IN DA WOODS 5" (Aug 17, 18, 19)

Grab your glowsticks, tent and raft, we're going camping this weekend.
Although I can't tell you exactly where it's at yet, we're gathering up a
bunch of our friends and heading to the woods (right on a beautiful lake!).
Sure there will probably be over a 1000 others joining us, but they're all
amateurs. Haha, not really, Klubstompers has been throwing this annual
outdoor party every summer for 5 years now. There will be boats, jet
skis...I think you can even bring your own if you'd like. Naha's played
every year and she'll be on the Goodbeat/Shameless stage once again. Jerry
Abstract, Novatron, Swank, Recess, MC Anton Bomb, Kadeejah Streets, Adlib,
Levi Clark, Michito, Love Virus are among the many that are also playing
that stage. It's less than 2 hours away and starts this Friday. To get all
of the ravetastic details, go check out the following thread....

http://www.nwtekno.org/vb/showthread.php?s=b280c8970b95bf8c1c80f1e610ecadd4&threadid=110801

This isn't about pretentiousness. It's about getting dirty, splashing in the
water & then getting dirty again. Hope to see you there!

It's the End of the World Season As We Know It
Season 3 - Bout 7 - CHAMPIONSHIP
Saturday, August 18, 2007
Magnuson Park, Hangar 27

In August, the Rat City Rollergirls cut to the chase ... for the 2007 RCRG League Championship trophy! The winners of each July semi-final bout, Grave Danger and the Sockit Wenches, will play for the revered golden roller skate, while Derby Liberation Front (who saw that one coming?) and the Throttle Rockets will battle it out in a grudge match for third and fourth place. And it's a pirate bout, matey! Prepare the booty!

August is your last time to see an RCRG regular season game until the calendar reads 2008! That's a long wait, and that means tickets for the championship are going to faster than Miss Fortune being chased by Burnett Down.

Doors open at 4 p.m. and we'll have our pre-show band starting at 5 p.m. in the beer garden. DJ Boo Berry will be spinning tunes all night long! Live music from the Wages of Sin! Arrrrr!

Antique Radio Association Swap Meet

Seattle Spin writes:

Antiques: Antique Radio Association Swap Meet, Aug 19th, by donation. Some of those old radios are a hoot - they're as big as a dorm refrigerator, take ten seconds to warm up, and give an eerie nighttime glow from the vacuum tubes - you can practically feel the radiation. Best thing is, these old radios also last forever, which is why they're having this swap meet.

Penny Arcade Expo or "PAX" (Aug 24 - 26)

Mike writes:

Hello there, I hope this finds you well!

I need to round up a bunch of costumed folks for 30 mins of shenanigans for a trade show (Penny Arcade Expo or "PAX") in on Aug 24. Its for my game company (www.gamecocklove.com) and a new game we just signed called "Pirates versus Ninjas." Its just what it sounds like, with dodgeballs.

SO... I figured instead of hiring some people to do this I'd find a Seattle area Burner group who needs completion funding on their camp or art project. I can spend $1000 and I need 4 pirates and 4 ninjas to show up with dodgeballs and tear through the convention, then dart out.

Seriously, total of about 30 mins "work".

Please hook me up if you know a good group for this.

Less Than Two Weeks Away!
We’re headed into the home stretch, and it’s great to see everything come together once again for the big event. What we have in key-learnings from the previous year, we pay for in raw growth in attendees, exhibitors, programming and content.

That said, you can check out the official schedule here to start planning out your PAX experience. As you can see we’ve gone and tripled the amount of content. For more detailed descriptions you can take a look here.
Believe it or not, our preregistration count crushed the total from 2006, so we know we have to continue to push the envelope as far as making things bigger and better for everyone involved. What other event has nerdcore rock concerts? Huge afterhours parties? Panels that provide both industry and consumer insight? Ridiculous cash prizes? Insane experimental social games and tournaments? The OMEGATHON?

Besides our Keynote Wil Wheaton, we’ve also got a great list of guest speakers from a wide range of disciplines, including the infamous Seamus Blackley, Ron Gilbert, Andrew Bub and the Roosterteeth dudes to name a few.

I can dance if I want to birthday Bash

Oh goodness it seems like only yesterday when we celebrated my last birthday bash... and yet here it comes again. I think my grandmother was right when she said life passes in two days. This is an early notice to my big bash celebrating another year survived. In my usual madness come see me dance my birthday blues and bootie away ;)

There is an awesome line up of some the best musicians in the city that I know of including: Bubba Jones, Darrius Willrich, Thane Mitchel, Ronnie Bishop, Jim Watkins, Nikki Wolgamott, Stacey Meyer,James Whetzel, Dj Kippy and MORE:

Bubbalicious! is what we call it but I can't tell you anything about this band. i can't tell you that this collection of musicians will fill your ears with wave after wave of ridiculously funky, all-improvised jams for hours on end. and i definitely can't tell you that you won't be able to sit still for long once the music starts. i can't tell you any of that -- because they've never played together before. when all that stuff happens, though, you're gonna want to be there.

Check out Furniture Girls here: http://www.myspace.com/furnituregirls Darrius here: http://www.myspace.com/darriuswillrich all of this in the beautiful space of Nectar in Fremont! Shock yes... I am leaving the HILL :) Come out, Bring all your loved ones, introduce me to some one I have not met before and your first drink is on me.

SECOND ANNUAL SEATTLE BIKE-IN

Check out this bike-in movie thing
that still needs all kinds of film makers...here are some links...I bet you
might know some people that could make some wicked props! There are prizes
and all levels of film makers are needed. I can extend deadlines if people
need that. Yep.

Northwest Film Forum: Bicycle Feature Film Challenge!!
Men and women, girls and boys: Gather to create Seattle's first-ever Feature Film Challenge! Contestants will work with pieces of a divvied up full-feature plot. Each segment will be no more than five-minutes long. When strung together, these seemingly stand-alone short films will fuse together to comprise an organic whole. We'll see a tale of love, of loss, and -- most importantly -- a tale about the importance of alternative transportation and responsible transportation-oriented, community-driven development! Let's not forget that there will be prizes for best sections!

100's of people will see this film on August 29th for the 2nd annual bike-in at Carl Anderson Park.

There are a few lonely segments that are still looking for a film team.

Artists and amateurs alike will have the unique ability to experience first-hand the entire creative process, from conception, to production, to exhibition.

Megan Kelso at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery

Underground Comix Legend Kim Deitch and Alternative Cartoonist Megan
Kelso at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery in Seattle on Friday,
August 31.

Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is pleased to welcome two of the
country’s most accomplished cartoonists to Seattle on Friday, August
31. Kim Deitch and Megan Kelso represent two generations of
alternative narrative art. The bookstore will host a book signing and
exhibition of original artwork and prints by these extraordinary
artists. The reception, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, is open to the public
at Fantagraphics Bookstore, located at 1201 S. Vale Street in
Seattle’s lively Georgetown arts community.

Kim Deitch’s storied career began as a contributor to seminal 60s
underground comix publications including Gothic Blimp Works and Young
Lust. His visionary graphics remain relevant and were subsequently
featured in Art Spiegelman’s RAW and R. Crumb’s Weirdo anthologies.
In a recent review of Deitch’s Shadowland graphic novel, New York
Times book critic John Hodgman observes, “Few underground cartoonists
deserve that subterranean title so fully as Kim Deitch. He was there
at the beginning of the movement, drawing for The East Village Other
in 1967, and his work retains much of that psychedelic, R. Crumb-like
earthiness. But also: He’s constantly digging, churning the inky soil
of American pop culture and marveling over the fossils he turns
up.” (June 3, 2007.)

In addition to Shadowland, Fantagraphics Books has collected Deitch’s
work in Beyond the Pale and published comic book series including The
Stuff of Dreams, Mishkin File, and Waldo World. His work is currently
the focus of an exhibition at the Phoenix Art Museum in Arizona.
Deitch’s first exhibition in Seattle will include colorful limited
edition prints and original drawings from Shadowland.

Seattle-born cartoonist Kelso began her career in the 90s with her
self-published ‘zine Girlhero. Fantagraphics recently published the
highly acclaimed The Squirrel Mother, a collection of Kelso’s short
stories. According to People magazine, “Kelso has sharp powers of
observation, and many of her characters have a blank-eyed innocence
that serves as a counterpunch to the acuity of the narratives.” Kelso
will exhibit original work from “Watergate Sue,” he ongoing series
appearing in the New York Times Magazine. This work can be viewed at:
http://www.nytimes.com/ref/magazine/funnypages.html. Megan Kelso
currently lives and works in New York City.

Kim Deitch and Megan Kelso will also appear (with Fantagraphics Books
publisher Gary Groth) at the Bumbershoot arts festival in Seattle on
Sunday, September 2, 5:45 PM - 6:45 PM at the Leo K Theater.

Kim Deitch and Megan Kelso Art exhibit and book signing. Friday, August 31, 6:00 to 8:00 PM Exhibition continues through September 19, 2007 Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery 1201 S. Al Columbia and “The Land of Broken Hearts"

FLOATING WORLD COMICS & ORANGE SUNSHINE PRESENTS:

"THE LAND OF BROKEN HEARTS"

A RARE EXHIBITION OF ARTWORK BY AL COLUMBIA

Floating World Comics presents a rare and exclusive opportunity to
view new work by the acclaimed and elusive artist Al Columbia.
September’s first Thursday will see the debut of “THE LAND OF BROKEN
HEARTS,” marking the first public exhibition and appearance by the
enigmatic artist in over a decade. The exhibition will feature a
large collection of limited edition prints, original artwork,
handmade books, and other ephemera from his Orange Sunshine Company,
much of it created especially for this show. The artist will also
participate in an informal Q&A during the event.

"THE LAND OF BROKEN HEARTS" is a new series of illustrations that
serves as a preview for a new collection of work that Columbia will
release in 2008 from Seattle’s Fantagraphics Books. Floating World
will have all of Columbia’s published works to date on hand at the
event, including The Biologic Show, Blab!, Mome, and Zero Zero.

The opening night reception will be documented on film by Kevin
Belli, a Boston filmmaker who has been creating the documentary
"Whatever Happened to Al Columbia?" over the last four years.

“The Land of Broken Hearts” runs through Oct. 2

Floating World Comics is greatly honored to host Columbia, who will
be visiting from his home in Connecticut. “I've been a fan of Al
Columbia's since I first read his groundbreaking masterpiece, ‘The
Trumpets They Play’,” says Floating World Founder Jason Leivian.
Published in the anthology Blab! Vol. 10 in 1998, “The Trumpets They
Play” has been hailed as one of the great short stories the comics
medium has ever produced, retelling the story of the apocalypse from
the Book of Revelations in a style that looked like stills from a
1930s Max Fleischer cartoon. The story caused an instant stir, and
comics fans couldn't wait to see what
Columbia would do next. Unfortunately, after “Trumpets” was released,
Columbia more or less disappeared from the comics scene. This show
will end a 9 year silence for him and offers his fans a very rare
opportunity to meet him in person.

If you are interested in obtaining an interview or providing coverage

Leather and Lace @ SOIL

Leather and Lace
Allison Manch and Ariana Page Russell

Leather and Lace is a collaboration between studio mates Allison Manch and Ariana Page Russell, consisting of photographs and collage. Imitating female pop and punk icons of the 70s and 80s, they adorn themselves with temporary tattoos and costume, adopting the personas of these icons. The custom made tattoos are the basis for an exploration of surface—skin, fabric, and image.

Manch's embroidered handkerchiefs examine the relationships between historic textile work, music, and quirky popular cultural conceits. Russell's work investigates skin, manifestations of ornament, and how exteriors reveal as they conceal—such as the emotional power of a blush.

While forming this project, Manch and Russell found that temporary tattoos are a perfect meeting point for their work in embroidery and skin: the surface of the embroidered fabric, turned into a tattoo, meets the skin, introducing a new layer of adornment between the two coverings. Musical icons admired by both artists inspired them to incorporate imagery and lyrics referencing the singers' styles, creating yet another bridge between their work. Combining these elements, photographs and collage reveal the results.

In the Backspace: Blush

New images from Derrick Jefferies reference the body, microscopy and the power of photography to transform the ordinary into the bizzare.

Opening: September 6th 6-8pm SOIL 112 3rd Ave S Thur-Sun 12-5pm 206.264.8061

"A Fine Line" @ Roq la Rue

Roq la Rue Gallery
Presents
“ A Fine Line ”

Xiaoqing Ding
Jason D’Aquino

Opens Friday August 10th 6-9pm
Runs through September 1st
emailus to be on the preview list!

Roq La Rue is pleased to present a show by two artists who explore
some of the darker aspects of human nature, such as sexuality and
fear. Both artists, although stylistically quite different, use a
combination of expert artistic draftsmanship mixed with audacious
subject matter.

Xiaoqing Ding hails from Beijing, China but currently lives in New
York. Having studied traditional Asian arts for over 8 years in
Beijing, her exposure to United States culture has allowed
Xiaoqing’s work to adopt a twist that melds classic Asian motifs
with an edgy undercurrent of sexuality, gluttony, and the melancholy
tug of war between the sexes. In her work, Xiaoqing often depicts
foxes (aka kitsune), which in her work symbolize the provocative
sexual female, and serves as a foil against repressed sexual desires
and sensuality. Peacocks also make an appearance as the vain male.
These characters swirl around and provoke the central human
characters into revealing their true, if not socially “correct”,
desires to each other. This particular series is rendered in both
lush, electrically vibrant pastels on paper, as well as delicate,
enigmatic silverpoint drawings.

Jason D’Aquino is also from New York. His graphite drawings bring
the term “meticulous” to new heights as his already small,
technically precise line work and shading is so thorough that he uses
a jeweler’s loupe to make the tiniest detail perfect. That
perfection plays off the humorously sinister and exuberantly
grotesque subject matter Jason uses, from Lovecraft-ain horrors and
serial killers, to warped pop culture iconography used as an
allegorical language about the current state our culture is in, as
well as the exploration of what drives humans to use horror as
entertainment. This series includes not only some of his well known
match book drawings, but also a new series based around a found
vintage Vargas pin up calendar, to which Jason has added ghostly
images exploring the theme of dark lust and the primal energy of
sexuality.

The Beat of Urban Art @ BLVD Gallery

BLVD Gallery presents
Justin BUA
The Beat of Urban Art
August 10 – September , 2007
Artist Reception and Book signing Friday August 10 6pm - 10pm

BLVD Gallery is proud to present one of the most widely recognized
and respected artists to document and participate in the Hip Hop
movement, Justin BUA. BUA’s art is infused with his experiences being a
B-Boy and graffiti Writer in NYC during the birth of a culture. Through
the distinct style that he calls “Distorted Urban Realism” melding
urban rhythms, graffiti, and classical art training BUA represents the
lives of both the revered and the marginalized, the heroes and the
underdogs of his time—New York City during the 1970s and ’80s.

Groundbreaking artist Justin BUA is internationally known for his
best-selling collection of fine art posters--The DJ being one of the
most popular prints of all time. Born in 1968 in NYC’s untamed Upper
West Side and raised between Manhattan and East Flatbush, Brooklyn, BUA
was fascinated by the raw, visceral street life of the city. He
attended the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music and Performing
Arts and complemented his education on the streets by writing graffiti
and performing worldwide with breakdancing crews. BUA went on to the
Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California where he earned a
B.F.A in Illustration. Currently, he teaches figure drawing at the
University of Southern California, while continuing to be a leading
innovator in both the fine and commercial art worlds. . BUA’s
energetic and vocal worldwide fan base ranges from former presidents,
actors, musicians, professional athletes, and dancers, to street kids
and art connoisseurs.

From the birth of Hip-Hop, emcees, and graffiti artists; to
deejays, street poets and ball players, BUA’s THE BEAT OF URBAN ART
(HarperCollins Publishers, hardcover on sale March 13, 2007) takes
readers into a masterfully illustrated New York City of the 1970s and
1980s as experienced by the artist’s heroes and the underdogs of that
era. Accompanied by sketches, studies, and explanations of how his
most famous paintings were created, this extraordinary oeuvre documents
the artist’s turbulent youth in the underground worlds of the urban
jungle to showcase landmark moments in the nation’s cultural history.

Kentree Speirs @ Retail Therapy

August 14th 6-9pm
For the August 14th Art Show Retail Therapy is proud to present the work of Portland artist
Kentree Speirs

"My paintings are autobiographical reflections stemming from notions I have about living. I am
interested in the nature of human perception and the fusion of intuition and visual literacy.
The ritual of creating art allows access to new perception and thereby enables distancing from
concepts that may limit a painting. These ideas are assessed and proven either worthy or unworthy
of art.

I pursue a dialogue between the initial idea, the intuitive, and the sensual and physical
experience of handling paint. Each painting combines intention, discipline, instinct, emotion,
erudition, failure, risk, and discovery. I enjoy creating a sense of tension, responding to the
wonder of painting, or working to narrate a feeling."

His collection of images from Seattle, Washington reveal a view of the city not normally seen. The photographs are of naturally occurring distortions, with no modification. These patterns and illusions are products of the buildings and objects themselves, framed with an artists' eye. The "curtain wall" of glass in modern buildings provides an opportunity to capture abstract art. Joe Clark travels in search of reflections. His work challenges the viewer to look beyond the hard surfaces in our lives to find beauty and motion. Color and playfulness are a big part of Joe's work, and he searches for fleeting moments when light and reflection illuminate the art surrounding us. (3400 Phinney Ave N.)

ADVENTURES IN WELTSCHMERZ: COMIC ART BY PAUL HORNSCHEMEIER
Dear friends,
Please consider attending this fine event this weekend!
FANTAGRAPHICS BOOKS PRESENTS:

"ADVENTURES IN WELTSCHMERZ:
COMIC ART BY PAUL HORNSCHEMEIER"
Fantagraphics is proud to celebrate the release of Chicago artist
Paul Hornschemeier's long-awaited graphic novel, THE THREE PARADOXES,
with a month-long exhibition of Hornschemeier's artwork and an
opening night reception with the artist at the Fantagraphics
Bookstore & Gallery in Seattle's Georgetown neighborhood on Saturday,
August 4th, beginning at 6PM.

The exhibition is titled "Adventures in Weltschmerz." The exhibition
includes original pages from The Three Paradoxes as well as work from
Let Us Be Perfectly Clear, the short stories collection published by
Fantagraphics in 2006. Hornschemeier's work is defined by its formal
experimentation and emotional tone, weaving interconnected visual
styles, playing with traditional comic book tropes, and using color
as a crucial narrative tool. All of these devices are used to bolster
his emotional & philosophical concerns in a fairly direct, though
subtle, manner.

The writer JONATHAN LETHEM states, "Hornschemeier doesn't resolve the
tension between the ironic and confessional poles in his work, he
exploits it. Beautifully. The result hums with brilliance." The
public is invited to meet this extraordinary artist at a festive
receiption on Saturday, August 4 from 6:00 to 8:00PM. Admission is free.
When at the Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery, check out new arrivals
from Fantagraphics Books and our expanded stock of classics, foreign
translations and alternative comics from like-minded publishers.
We've added books from from publishers like Last Gasp and Drawn &
Quarterly, and familiar favorites like Tintin and other classics!
WHAT: "Adventures in Weltschmerz: Comic Art by Paul Hornschemeier"
WHEN: Opening reception Saturday, August 4, 6:00 - 8:00PM.
