BLVD Gallery: FOSCIL Performance

BLVD Gallery is going electric this friday with a FREE live musical

performance by Seattle based band FOSCIL.
Foscils music is an amalgam of diverse influences touching on the
atmospheric production of Wu Tangs RZA,
the out-jazz of Miles, and the psychedelic meandering of Zappa. After
curating the audio environment for the
"Claimin' Space" art exhibition at this years Bumbershoot Festival to
much acclaim, Foscil is the perfect fit for the
atmosphere of BLVD Gallery. Also performing will be Seattle DJ
Collective Hidden Habitats. known for the complex
mixes they create often utilizing 3 or more turntables. The evening
will be early with the music starting at 8pm and ending at 10ish.
A perfect early setup for a friday night. Oh, did I mention the show is
Free.

Pine & Bylston Art Show!

Sachi writes:

Hey, so my friend "No Touching Ground" and other Seattle's local artists are having a big instillation at the house/apartment behind of Kincora this Friday! It's a part of the block where they will build a condo, so they're gonna tear down the building after this show. It will be like another Bridge Motel Art Show probably.
But this time, tickets are required to enter the building. They only have 333 tickets available at the crape shop bottom of the Convention Center on Pine on the date of the art show, which is Friday the 30th. Ticket to enter is free, but they have a late night performance on the rooftop and that ticket will be between $5 to $15, not sure yet. Both tickets are available at the same place. The crape stop is on Pike, in the building of Convention Center, next to Subway. One person can only get 2 tickets. So, if you are interested in this, go get the tickets! :) I will go for sure! Hope to see you all there....

THE THERMALS @ Neumos

The prospect of an unknown, unpolished, unready band being put in the national spotlight is not longer even close to rare. Every week the not incredibly discerning ear of music blogs and websites tunes in to bands with nary an album to their name. The banner of Next Big Thing is proferred and then forgotten as the dutiful keyboard jockeys move on to the next diamond in the rough. But when Sub Pop released the Thermals' debut More Parts Per Million just 6 years ago, that wasn't the case and the recording stood out in all its tinny ecstatic punk joy, loose screws exposed. The standout track's chorus "Hardly art, hardly garbage," hit close enough to the bone to make the band seem at once silly and important. Something between garbage and art. Fortunately that album was released by Sub Pop, a label that has stood behind the band as it has developed a more complex, mature sound, all for a growing fanbase's viewing pleasure. It's hard to say, but the Thermals might be the last great crappy band.

Robert Kuttner: ‘The Squandering of America’

Robert Kuttner is the co-founder and editor-in-chief of the left-liberal political magazine The Prospect. In his new book, The Squandering of America, Kuttner argues that the abandonment of policies, institutions, and regulations in place since the New Deal has enriched the already wealthy at the expense of America’s lower and middle classes. He compares the causes of the Great Depression to behavior patterns evident in our market system today, with unfavorable conclusions. James Fallows calls this book “persuasive and powerfully argued.” Presented by the Town Hall Center for Civic Life with Elliott Bay Book Company.

Aqua Art Miami 07

Aqua Art Miami 07

This year Aqua Art Miami will take place in two locations simultaneously, one at the Aqua Hotel in South Beach, near Art Basel Miami Beach where we first launched the fair in 2005. Our additional new venue, Aqua Wynwood, is in a warehouse in Miami's Wynwood gallery district, near important venues like the Rubell Collection and many others.

This year we'll feature 44 galleries at the Aqua Hotel, with more than half of the dealers being new to our fair. Based on the west coast, fair organizers have made it their mission to promote noteworthy programs in their region as well as the greater USA, with a particular interest in supporting young dealers and galleries with strong emerging artist programs. Approximately a third of the galleries are from Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, with the remainder being from a wide range of other cities in the US and abroad.

The hotel itself is a classic South Beach boutique hotel with breezy, spacious rooms surrounding an intimate courtyard, which has become a favorite gathering spot to relax and socialize during Art Basel week. Our event is located within walking distance of Art Basel, just south of the bustling Lincoln Road restaurant and shopping area. Many hotel beach bars and cocktail events are close by and the glorious beach itself is just a block away.

An Aqua shuttle will run in a continual loop between the hotel and Art Basel Miami Beach each day during regular event hours, stopping near the Botanical Garden across from the Convention Center entrance D.

PUNCH + SOIL International Juried Exhibition

PUNCH + SOIL International Juried Exhibition
A bell is a cup until it is struck

December 6 – 30, 2007

Two Venues. One Exhibition.
Opening Receptions and Awards: 6-9pm, First Thursday, December 6, 2007

PUNCH and SOIL team-up to present the work of 16 artists from across the US and beyond. Nearly 1000 entries were submitted from more than 300 artists. Juried by Eric Fredericksen, director of Western Bridge, this exhibition includes a focused assemblage of photography, video, sculpture, ink on paper, cough drop labels and other mixed media. Themes include spills, spots, piles, trash, smoke, mirrors, bread, sunsets, Jesus, trees, motor homes, and a poodle.

Juror’s statement:

“Given the rich assortment of work submitted for this exhibition, a juror could make any number of exhibitions. Given the two spaces and their divergent histories, I chose to make two linked, loosely thematic exhibitions. At SOIL, a series of confrontations with geometry, at PUNCH, confrontations with nature. Documentary imagery dominates, though what is being documented is often a constructed situation. Responding to tensions in the work between structure and entropy, as between representation and abstraction, the exhibition remains unresolved. Each space will also display work which does not fit into this scheme, in order that the scheme not completely destroy the illusion that an exhibition juried by a single juror could result in an objective accounting of the best work submitted.”
–Eric Fredericksen

Events from 11/23 to 11/29/2007

What a strange day. I just drove through Capitol Hill and it felt like a ghost town. Nobody was on the street except for a long line of kids waiting for their opportunity to buy new kicks for cheap at a hip hop shoe store. Is it really true that everybody in the US is at malls today buying stuff they probably don't need?

"UNSEEN PEANUTS" @ Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery

"UNSEEN PEANUTS" Revealed This Friday!

Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery, in association with the Charles M.
Schulz Museum and Research Center, is pleased to present "Unseen
Peanuts." This collection of full size, rarely seen Peanuts strips
opens with a daylong preview on Friday, November 23 from 11:30 until
8:00 PM, highlighted by an "Unseen Peanuts" slide presentation by
Fantagraphics Books co-publisher Kim Thompson at 6:00 PM. The public
of all ages is invited to this free event.

Perhaps no American artist is more closely associated with the
holidays than Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz. Kim Thompson, co-
editor of the Complete Peanuts series, points out that even though
Peanuts is the most-reprinted comic strip in history, several
thousand strips had never been collected until The Complete Peanuts
project began in 2004. The show includes a companion 32-page "Unseen
Peanuts" comic book catalogue featuring over 150 more of these "lost"
strips. This fully annotated publication is available for free with
any purchase exclusively at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery.

Get an early start on your holiday shopping at Fantagraphics
Bookstore & Gallery, located at 1201 S. Vale St. (at Airport way S.)
in the heart of Seattle's lively Georgetown business district.
Throughout the month of November all comic strip reprints, including
The Complete Peanuts, are offered at 20 % off, and pick up our free
"Comic Strip Masterpieces" tabloid.

"Unseen Peanuts" remains on view through December 31. Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is open daily 11:30 - 8:00 PM, Sundays until 5:00 PM. 206.658.0110.

GREEN VELVET @ Neumo

Friday November 23rd @ Neumos
Decibel Productions is proud to present the return of....

GREEN VELVET
Chicago, Relief and Cajual Records : http://www.green-velvet.com

In 1991 Jones created the Cajual label and released his first EP, “Underground Goodies,” under the moniker Cajmere. This release features his translation of the cut-up production style typical of the early house sound. One year later Cajmere celebrated his first massive hit with the house tune “Coffeepot (It’s Time for the Perculator).” Another success followed with “Brighter Days,” a collaborative project with Chicago-based vocalist Dajae, which entered #2 on the US dance charts.

Two years later Jones created Relief Records as an offshoot of Cajual. This is where he assumed the persona of Green Velvet – a flamboyant, neon-haired Electro Punk. Jones cites Sly and the Family Stone and David Bowie as the influence for his new identity. The 1993 release “Velvet Tracks” marks his first production as Green Velvet. Many hits followed, including “Preacher Man,” “Answering Machine,” and “Flash,” each incorporating creative voiceovers. “Flash” became a #1 US dance hit in 1995 and is featured on many DJ compilations.

Jones spent the remainder of the nineties gaining popularity under both titles. In 1999 he released “Constant Chaos” with Belgian label Music Man. Here Green Velvet’s signature house style shows elements similar to Prince and Kraftwerk. Released in 2001, “Whatever” exemplifies an even darker sound and tackles issues such as racism, drug use, alienation and authority. Jones says he spent hours listening to “underground American industrial stuff,” including Nitzer Ebb and Liaisons Dangerous. Intended to speak to the dangers of drug abuse, “La La Land” came out that same year and became one of his most popular tunes.

In 2005 Jones dropped his fourth album, “Walk in Love,” which acknowledges his passion for house music while staying true to his punk influences. Jones produced and remixed releases for himself and other Relief Records artists and played a host of live shows in 2006.

His latest single, “Shake and Pop,” was a departure from his darker electronic style and became a widely popular underground club hit. In 2007 Jones released “Love Peace, Not War,” a short track in response to the war in Iraq, which is only available online. Jones continues to produce and perform live under a host of DJ names.

Independent Exposure - Autumn Edition @ Central Cinema

Hi Party Volcanoers,

I’m writing to tell you about the November edition of Independent Exposure screening at the Central Cinema. This month’s program is the Autumn Edition featuring 13 Short films covering subjects ranging from dreams to jungles to Bukowski.

In addition to the regular program, our “Local Spotlight” this month features a short film by Tyson Theroux entitled “Nocturne” which is an experimental super-8 film about a woman’s struggle with the forces of the night.

Hope to see you there!

-Reed O’Beirne

Autumnal Edition Program Overview:
Screenwindow directed by Amy Youngs U.S., Documentary, 2003, DV, 3:24
A chronicle of a personal, three-year obsession with a web cam of the Empire State Building . Constructed entirely from computer screenshots.

Bukowski directed by Virginia Valdes U.S., Experimental, 2003, DV Magnetic Monaural, 0:45
The voice of Charles Bukowski pensively offers recollections to the passing beams of the Queensboro Bridge in a metaphor of freedom and it’s loss.

O.W.L. Off World Laboratory directed by Sheridan Shindruk Canada, Experimental, 2000, DV, 4:00
Technological telepathy looms as a mobile-laboratory forages through a series of locations that allude to premonitions of failure, loss, and isolation.

The Unbelievable Act of Totally Disappearing directed by Shannon Silva U.S., Documentary, 2003, Super-8 to 16mm, 5:00
A reflection on family and personal interactions obscured by technology and time.

Pink Socks directed by Leighton Pierce U.S., Documentary, 2002, DV, 3:40
Another brief documentary on the Piazza San Marco in Venice .

11/28/02 directed by Mark O'Connell U.S., Experimental, 2003, DV 1:54
November 28th was a foggy night. Light and fog interact. Fluctuations form soft rhythms.

Bodybags directed by Kirk Hostetter U.S., Comedy / Satire, 2003, DV, 10:54
Merle McNally loves his pet fishes, and his serene life. But when a half-a-world-away ugliness seeps through his subconscious, the very foundation of his everyday life lies in the balance.

Excitement is Exciting directed by Justin White U.S., Animation, 2002, mini-DV, 1:44
Excitement is exciting and so are you.

(h)ombre directed by Laurent Barthelemy U.S., Animation, 2003, 3D Animation, 2:40
Everybody seems to be running away from something. One being takes the decision to face it.

Taken directed by Kirsten Carthew U.S., Animation, 2002, DVCAM 11:00

Rosabelle Believe directed by Tim Shore U.K., Animation, 2002, 16mm 5:23
A dream film about seeing and believing.

Balikbayan (Homebound) directed by Larilyn Sanchez U.S., Experimental, 2003, DV 5:00
A tale of family, love, and imported goods.

Museums of Forests directed by Leif Peterson U.S., Animation, 2002, DV, B&W, 3:00

Congolese party performance @ On the Boards

Nov 29 – Dec 1, 2007 | 8pm
On the Boards is thrilled to welcome artist Faustin Linyekula from the Democratic Republic of Congo. This is a fantastically off-the-beaten path performance. Instead of sitting in the traditional seats at OtB, the doors open early and the audience is invited into a nightclub atmosphere on the mainstage. A live African pop band will be playing and you can purchase a plate of food or a drink from the bar. Amidst the festive environment, dance, theater, political speeches and personal stories will unfold.

Doors at 7pm. Enjoy live music by Wawali Bonane. Bring extra cash if you want to purchase African cuisine from Jacques Sarr (Afrikando) before or during the show.

M.I.A. (London/Sri Lanka, hip hop, pop, dancehall) @ Showbox Sodo

Touring to support her second release, Kara, M.I.A. is turning heads with her unique blend of London hip hop, Sri Lankan pop, dancehall beats and what she calls "third world democracy". Her new album truly embodies the modern global spirit and incorporates field recordings made in Japan , India , Australia and Trinidad . Her live shows are reputed to have a revolutionary vibe like some other London rebel rockers from decades past, probably why US customs denied her visa to enter the US to work on this record.

ART BIZARRE @ Christoff Gallery

I know this is short notice, but I've recently been invited to be part of an ART SHOW this Saturday. An Artist's Reception is from 5-9pm.There will be live music and a full bar, so it would be a nice place to stop by before your other plans for the evening!

I'll be showcasing all sorts of photographs: matted, framed, gift cards, etc. Everything will be priced to SELL (i.e. cheap)!!! It will be a clearinghouse with photos from all over the world: Croatia, Cuba, Norway, England, Ireland, Brazil, Costa Rica, France, etc.

Need a holiday gift for your family/friends? Come on by! I will also be taking orders for any gifts/prints/etc. that can be delivered within 5-7 business days. While cash is preferred, credit cards will also be accepted.

Afterwards (around 9:30pm), we'll be heading to a nearby bar (most likely the 9lb Hammer) for well-deserved drinks!
For those of you who cannot attend on Saturday, my exhibit will be up throughout the week, ending on Friday, Nov 23rd. Check gallery for hours.
Would love to see you,

Kristen

Special Screening: Float @ EVO

LADIES, LADIES, LADIES….and Gents…

Just because you happened to wear a bra, doesn’t mean you’re being supported….

As all you ladies out there know, it can be hard to find the right gear, at the right fit, with the right help. So why not support the companies and shops that focus on our needs as riders and individuals?

Our friends at EVO are kicking off a SPECIAL screening Saturday, November 17th of FLOAT, an all female snowboard film (doors @ 8pm). EVO will also be dishing out tips on HOW TO PURCHASE WOMEN SPECIFIC GEAR, supplying free food and drinks, and finally of course, giving you special deals on current snowboarding inventory.

And…if you missed out on any 2007 Mamafest gear, we will have our inventory present at reduced prices. If you miss this, you will be sad.
So come out and support the local shops that are going the extra mile for the ladies in film, snow and service! Check out evoseattle.com for more info.

OZOMATLI (East L.A., Latino rock, hip hop, salsa) @ Showbox Market

Journeymen from East LA , Ozomatli have been at it for 12 years. A mash up of Spanglish hip-hop, salsa, cumbia, and dub - their latest album, Don't Mess With The Dragon, adds middle eastern funk to the mix. Ozo's live shows are legendary for their celebratory vibe, and often erupt into drum-line community parties. In an effort to spread that good vibe around, the US State Department sent Ozomatli on tour this summer in the Middle East and beyond as cultural ambassadors. Seriously.

Maureen Whiting Company @ On the Boards

Maureen Whiting Company returns to On the Boards with a little solo:

Part physically extreme dance and part descriptive ballad, the mysteriously and humorously warped,
“love is god and it’s made for me”, is inspired by and set to Nina Hagen’s song “Zahra”.

Choreographed by Maureen Whiting, performed by Cassie Wulff, and developed by choreographer and dancer.

Last seen in “Ten Tiny Dances”, it is again redeveloped for stage so if you missed it in September, see it in one week!

Don Volcano's Computer Corner

Everybody knows the rough idea of Thanksgiving: In 1621, near the end of the Plymouth colony's first year in America, the settlers gave thanks for a plentiful first harvest. The pilgrims and the natives celebrated together (they had arranged a peace treaty), and everyone feasted on geese, ducks, deer, corn, oysters, fish and berries.

Things have changed quite a bit since then. It seems in 2007 it's all about size. C.D.O. Andrew ran across this weird thing about building a giant German burger:

Bon Appétit!
