Art By: Rick Linville, Marianne Goldin, Josh Slater.
Music by: PWRFL POWER and Dennis Driscoll.
Marianne painting © Vermillion

If you've passed by the gallery this week you may have seen Marianne Goldin dutifully working on her mural on the north wall of the gallery. Marianne is one of three artists for our show that opens this Friday: "Hand To Paper". She's showing figurative work done with ink and watercolor on paper. Here's her Flickr page.

Rick Linville Detail

Rick Linville worked in Sharpie™, as well as ink, pastel and graphite. (See detail at left) and produced a large body of work before he passed away earlier this year. We're showing 21 original pieces in honor of this greatly missed emerging talent.

Josh SlaterJosh Slater lives in Brooklyn and has graced us with some truly weird, but way-cool, art. He has a blog HERE. Here's his official artists statement: "You can't always tell from the outside what fruit has gone rotten."

PWRFL POWER and Dennis Driscoll are playing great music for the opening. PWRFL POWER is a Japanese International Student / Singer-songwriter who charmed the pants off the crowd at the Capitol Hill Block party. Dennis is on K records.

Circus Contraption’s Haunted Housewarming

CIRCUS CONTRAPTION MAKES NEW HOME IN FREMONT , HOSTS “HAUNTED HOUSEWARMING”

Circus Contraption’s Haunted Housewarming

A Halloween Cocktail Party and Blowout Bash

Welcome to the new “House of Contraption!” Circus Contraption, Seattle ’s own off-beat one-ring circus troupe, moves its home base to the Theo Chocolate building in Fremont this October, just in time for a hair-raising Halloween housewarming party. The Circus is known far and wide for its popular Halloween events-- this one will be extra-special since it represents a homecoming to the nine-year-old troupe’s original stomping grounds. Fans and friends are invited to celebrate Circus Contraption’s return to the “Center of the Universe” by checking out their new “digs” on Friday, October 26.

Early evening guests will be treated to an intimate Haunted Housewarming Cocktail Party beginning at 7:30pm, complete with personal guided tour of the new space (and all its special Halloween mysteries) by a bonafide Circus Contraption performer, a complimentary “Wicked Welcome” cocktail, hors d'ouevres, entertainment by the legendary Baby Gramps, and Halloween games, Circus Style. Then the doors cre…eak open to the masses at 9:30pm for the Haunted Housewarming Blowout: a celebration of Halloween the way only Circus Contraption knows how! The ghastly goings-on include live performances by Circus Contraption and special guests Nanda, Scarlet Room, Vince Miranda, and Holly Chernobyl-bound to bring on a terminal case of the jitters, the willies and the creeps! Bring your trick-or-treat bags! Please note that both the Cocktail Party and the Bash are 21 and over (with ID).

A little info about some of the evening’s entertainment:

Circus Contraption – Halloween is a rare opportunity for the Circus Contraption Band to let their hair down and play the music that is too loud, too rock n' roll, or too sinister for the Circus Contraption stage show. The band, a gypsy carnival junk orchestra consisting of 7 musicians and umpteen instruments, will be accompanied by generous helpings of Halloween hijinks from the Circus Contraption puppeteers, strumpets, acrobats and riffraff.
http://www.circuscontraption.com

Baby Gramps - A Popeye-voiced, old-timey, bizarro balladeer described by some as “an attic crammed with curiosities of another era.” His steel-guitar workouts and guttural growls, hoots, and whispers combine with a sense of fun as he rummages through vintage jazz, sea chanteys, nonsense songs, poetry, Delta blues, Tin Pan Alley, world music and forgotten folk tunes.
http://www.babygramps.com

Nanda - Four young and extremely well-toned acrobats from Port Townsend who combine stage combat, break dancing and comedy to create a show that resembles a Kung Fu movie come alive.
http://www.nandatown.com

Scarlet Room – Described as “Masterminds who founded a musical style they’ve dubbed ‘cabaret rock,’ twenty-somethings Aleksandra Weil and Eloise Govedare are a match made in musical heaven in the vein of a younger, hipper and female Kander and Ebb or Weill and Brecht.” http://www.scarlet-room.com/

Vince Miranda – The 15 year old Johnny Cash sensation.

Holly Chernobyl – Performing Stephen King’s “Carrie” as a one woman puppet show.

FERALIA DECEPTIVA

Hello friends,

We're full-on into autumn and one of my favorite times of the year, Halloween! Growing up, I always thought of Halloween as the most festive holiday next to Christmas, because of the costumes. It's wonderful to see people's creativity come through in whatever unique outfit they may devise. Also, as a child of the 80's I LOVED horror movies, so Halloween's macabre themes were always fun for me.
As I'm sure you've guessed by now, I'm about to tell you all about the most fun-tastical, horrifyingly wonderful Halloween bash you could ask for. It's happening this Saturday and here's the skinny on it...

Saturday, October 27th: Starborne presents ~FERALIA DECEPTIVA~ night of the moth
This is going to be a truly memorable night for everyone there. Amazing music, performances, decorations, and costumes. Don't sleep on this!

After you recover from this Hallow's Eve festivities, there's a couple other happenings going down in the next few weeks you may want to be at. However, I'm still waiting for all the details, so I'll get back to that in another email after this weekend.

Hope to see you all in costume on the dancefloor this weekend!

Lotz of love,
sEth

P.S. There will also be a super-secret, ultra heady house party on Friday Oct 26th. If you're interested in attending, email me (Seth Branum, [mailto:manos213@hotmail.com]) for the downlow.

Trolloween/Troll-a-Go-Go

Trolloween/Troll-a-Go-Go

At 7 pm on every Halloween, a large group of costumed people spontaneously shows up under the north end of the Aurora Bridge where the famous Fremont Troll is located for the Trolloween event. The performances usually commence with some sort od humorous costume drama including huge puppets, followed by skeleton dancers, musicians, and/or fire performers.

Following the Trolloween performances, the costumed throng marches en-masse down to a venue in Downtown Fremont (usually the Theo Chocolate
Building) for the big Troll-A-Go-Go Halloween party, with music, drinks, etc

Pike Place Market Paranormal Pub Crawl

I am running a Pub Crawl through the Market for Halloween night. Groups of 25 are starting out at different bars, like Il Bistro, The Alibi Room and The Can-Can, and through the course of the night they will be taken to different parts of the Market to experience different scary stories, and learn how to use a pendulum, how to see ghosts, and be freacked out...At the end of the night, at Midnight, I am going to take the stage as a ranting Spiritualist from the late 1800's and I will perform a seance to try to conjure up the spirit of Houdini. There has been Houdini seances every Halloween night all over the world since 1927. The seance will be at The Can-Can. There are limited tickets and they are on sale now. Tickets are $20. Groups of 20-25 get a discount. But like I said, tickets are limited...so let me know if you want to come!

Pike Place Market Paranormal Pub Crawl

At night, the Pike Place Market comes alive in an entirely different way than during the day. The tables empty, the tourists leave and the Arcades are wide open. Some of the best restaurants and bars are in the Pike Place Market, and many of them are haunted. This Halloween, join some very eccentric guides as they take you on a Paranormal Pub Crawl of the Pike Place Market. Included on the crawl is the Can-Can, The Alibi Room, Kell's Irish Pub and Il Bistro. Ghost Stories and will be told along the way. Culminating in a seance at the Can-Can, it is sure to be an incredible night. Guides along the way will share stories, history, scientific explanations and share with you how to see and communicate with ghosts.

Meet at the PIG at 7:00PM, you will be divided into groups and taken to different restaurants/bars in the Market. Ticket price does not include drinks, but does include a secret gift.

Seattle's 2nd Annual Naked Run

Finally! Complete Pumpkin Debauchery! Seattle's 2nd Annual Naked Pum

On a chilly, dark Halloween night in 2007, Seattle set a new record
for the largest inaugural Naked Pumpkin Run event with seven brave
Pumpkin Head runners plus a small entourage of friends!
Yes my ghoulish comrads, the time of the year to don our favorite
orange squash fruit and run like Jack-o’-lantern-possessed freaks and
fools is nearly upon us!

Announcing:

the 2nd Annual Seattle Naked Pumpkin Run (NPR)

Wednesday, Oct 31, 2007 Halloween - Meetup at 9:15 PM

+ (NEW) Daylight Naked Pumpkin Run (Saturday, Nov 3, 2007) on a small
stretch of the Burke Gilman Trail (details revealed on Halloween night)

The super shady meetup/start location for the Halloween Run will be at

the Green Lake Park *East Beach* - same as last year

http://www.cityofseattle.net/parks/parkspaces/GreenLakePark/beach1.htm

meet at the lifeguard elevated chair, inside of the 2.8 mile inner
walk/bike trail, and adjacent to/just west of the Community Center/
Evans Pool (7201 E. Green Lake Drive N). Similar to last year, we
will be jogging a short distance around the lake, around the streets
a bit, whatever else the group wants to do (the night will still be
young).

Anybody up to offering to carpool to another location (I’ve got a few
additional ideas depending how brave everybody feels after the main
run) or providing a place for an afterparty? We are also looking for
a pumpkin carving pre-run party host and location.

How long will the run be? We’ll discuss it before we run, but last
year we just winged it. We actually ran/jogged/stumbled a good
distance, 15-25 minutes or so, believe it or not, since the entire
Green Lake area seemed completely desolate. There is no planned route
– the nature of the run will be at times random, confused, ridiculous
and often highly exuberant!

Last year there were few people on the path, and surprisingly few out
driving on the streets. People were honking, pulling over and
screaming, giving us cheers, people in the Green Lake Community
Center were taking our picture with their mobile phone cameras as we
posed in front of the entrance, it was awesome! Yes, whatever fear
you have of the run will be quickly replaced by the enthusiasm of
complete strangers cheering you on!

We have been asked by Vladamir Leber at Naked Pumpkin Run Central in
Boulder to try to find someone to videotape or photograph our Seattle
run so we can share pictures with the other cities and to help
promote the run in the future. Approved documentation people will be
asked to only shoot people with their pumpkins on, or if not, with
special permission. Perhaps we can produce our own underground art
film (see examples below). Contact me if you can help! Picture CD-Rs
are still available from last year’s run for last year’s participants
and their friends.

What to bring:

*A carved out pumpkin, large enough to fit over your head, with big
openings that you can see out of while running/jogging a short
distance. Buy your pumpkins soon – the big ones may start disappearing!
**For those wearing real pumpkins, Cleo recommends wearing shower
caps so your “hair doesn't get icky”.
** Franz has made four papier-mâché pumpkin heads for $17-25 per
pumpkin (sliding scale). Rent one for the evening for $5 - cheap!
Please e-mail me ASAP if you are interested (aside from my own, there
are only three available). These are lightweight and reusable.
*Shoes/socks you can jog in
*Something to put your clothes in (unless you want to take a small
risk and leave your clothes where you took them off)
**One popular idea is to use a trick or treat bag for your clothes to
run with.
**accessories: glowsticks, el-wire-ware, et cetera. The area we will
be starting our run is _very dark_, you may want to bring a bright
flashlight to see your way. Of course you can just follow the aimless
ass of the clown in front of you.
*Bring a towel if you are crazy enough to take this experience one
step further into the lake afterwards. So far, no one has been crazy
enough to do this.
*Bring your friends! Maybe the one who isn’t quite convinced of the
merits of all of this malarkey can guard your clothes.
WARNING: Run at your own risk! The area is dark, the air is cold,
surrounded by water and there are some trip hazards in the park
(which are even harder to see with a pumpkin over your head.

November at Soil

Sensoria Iole Alessandrini, Thom Heileson, Wyndel Hunt, Ed Mannery, Ben McAllister

Sensoria presents two new immersive installations, each integrating light and sound to transform the gallery space, concentrating on the visitor’s sensory perceptions within the specific physicality of a new environment. Each work will in its own way conflate and link different sensory experiences: vision, hearing, and feedback to physical movement.

The exhibition will feature the interactive installation Hidden Spaces, by artist/architect Iole Alessandrini, programmer/composer Ben McAllister and engineer Ed Mannery. In this work, lasers create planes that form flat spatial fields. Through the use of video tracking and computerized sound, the planes are ‘audio-visualized’: people explore, with their own movements, the spaces hidden within the planes of light by triggering sounds made as they intersect these planes.

Also featured is Free Dissociation—a new collaborative work by Thom Heileson and Wyndel Hunt—a three-channel, stereo audio projection installation enveloping the gallery visitor in a textural, audio-visual tapestry that pairs Heileson’s animated visual imagery with Hunt’s similarly abstract sound composition. The artists exploit perceived parallels in their work—which speak in corresponding emotive tones but in different sensory media—to build an immersive perceptual ground delineated by intrinsically linked strata of light and sound.

Hey PV,

It's been a while since I rapped at ya....

The Underground is a cool new temporary venue (was already home to the Punk Rock Flea Market) which will be hosting lots of interesting stuff for the next year or so.

Saturday is an unofficial grand opening party with some very lively bands. I'll be doing some live interactive video projecting, too. Rock! Thanks!

Final Safari at Baltic Room

Greetings SunTzu Sound Family!

SunTzu Sound announces that this month's edition of SAFARI at The Baltic Room on Saturday October 20th will be our last. We've decided to put the night to rest to focus on our record label, producing our own tunes and pursuing more out of town bookings (our recent trip to SF has us inspired!) You can still catch us around town at various venues including our weekly event over at Havana on Thursdays BACK DOOR (which is jumping off, FYI). We thank you for helping spread the word of a night dedicated to the soulful side of future dance music. While SAFARI was preaching the gospel, we've brought in such international talent as: Osunlade, Rich Medina, Waajeed of Platinum Pied Pipers, Daz-I-kue, Recloose, John Beltran, 1Luv, Jeremy Ellis aka Ayro, Kyoto Jazz Massive, Dego of 4Hero. Please help us throw one final bash before we move on.

Also, October 27 marks the return of Jazzanova. The tour is a celebration of the 10 year anniversary for Sonar Kollektiv and the party is a full on Halloween Bash! Get your tickets at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/21504/ Full details below!

Lecture and Booksigning: Urs Peter Flückiger

Donald Judd (1928-1994) was one of the most important exponents of American minimal art who also exerted a lasting influence in the field of architecture. Among the lesser-known aspects of Judd’s work is a large collection of architectural designs, which explore the relationship of architecture and art. Of special importance for Judd’s work in this field is a former military fort in Marfa, Texas, which he purchased and systematically transformed into one of the largest ensembles of contemporary art. Unlike the work of such architects such as Louis Kahn, Carlo Scarpa or Hans Doellgast, who clearly distinguished differences between the old and the new in their designs for existing buildings, Judd was unconcerned with expressing these differences in what he added to the architecture. He was concerned with the whole, the building and the urban or landscape context. The book will be an invaluable source of inspiration for contemporary architects.

A reception and book-signing will follow the lecture.

SLIDELUCK POTSHOW PORTLAND

Thursday October 25th | 7:00 Potluck | 9:00 Slideshow | Ace Hotel
Please Bring Food - Drinks will be available for purchase | Info @ pdx@slideluckpotshow.com
Extended Submission Deadline: Friday, October, 19th, 2007

Greetings Portland:

Consider this your invitation to Slideluck Potshow Portland. What,
may you ask, am I talking about? I'm talking about a slideshow and
I'm talking about a potluck. Slideluck Potshow is a gathering of
members of the arts, photography, and media communities to share and
celebrate art in one night. Based in New York and held in many cities
internationally, SLPS is the first ever digital art salon and potluck
all in one! This event, which happens thrice yearly in New York City
and brings together about a thousand spirited individuals, is about to
have a go in Portland. The PDX event will be held at the
Ace Hotel on Thursday October 25th, 2007.

Submit your art work for SLPS PDX! We are currently seeking creative,
thought-provoking submissions. Participants are encouraged to take
creative risks, in terms of content and presentation, and to not just
show their portfolios. The submissions are collected and curated in
advance of the slideshow. Cutting-edge multimedia presentations are
welcomed and all shows are accompanied by music, commentary, or other
surprises. SLPS PDX submission deadline is October 15th. Please visit the
submissions page of the SLPS website for guidelines and contact
pdx@slideluckpotshow.com for FTP information. Please note that this
show is unthemed.

It's a potluck, what to bring? Basically, should you choose to join
us on October 25th, we just ask that you bring something to something
nice to eat. We're not talking about peanuts and cracker jacks here.
We would like to see a tray of your favorite lasagna, spicy tuna
rolls, a green papaya salad, pigs-in-a-blanket, or a chocolate-almond
torte. Don't know how to cook? Pick something up from your favorite
restaurant or be prepared to make a donation. Need ideas? Check out
the recipes on our website (http://www.slideluckpotshow.com.) In
addition, you will find photos from the events, archived slideshows,
feedback, press, etc.

Around 9pm we will dim the lights, hush the crowd, and kickoff a
spectacular slideshow. We will be presenting a wide variety of work,
from photojournalism to fashion photography, portraiture, installation
and painting— each presentation lasting no longer than five minutes.
We will be showing about 30 artists work, from Portland and
elsewhere Contributors in past SLPS from around the world include:
The Guggenheim Foundation, Alec Soth, Elliott Erwitt, Chris Buck,
Elinor Carucci, Martin Schoeller, Alex Majoli, Catherine Ledner, and
Bruce Gilden.

Halloween
at the Hideout

It's either Wednesday, October 24th or Thursday, October 25th.
I think it's the latter.

Yes I know it is early. Halloween is a long, long ways away. Still,
please mark your calendar for Halloween festivities at the Hideout.

We will be hosting our third annual pumpkin carving party on
Wednesday, October 25th. Alcohol and knives. Great idea.

And we will be hosting our third annual costume party Saturday,
October 27th. And yes, costumes are required.

Both evenings are free and fantastically fun. So get your costumes
together, mark your calendar and make this Halloween a sure thing.
