Yumiko Kayukawa and Ojimbo @ Roq la Rue

Roq la Rue

presents

Yumiko Kayukawa
and
Ojimbo

Opens THIS Friday October 12th 6-9pm
creepy treats and beverages will be on hand!

Yep- it's Roqtober, and our favorite month at the gallery. This month
we have a great show featuring two returning artists, painter Yumiko
Kayukawa and sculptor/carver Ojimbo (who will be supplying us with
our monster quotient for Halloween!)

Yumiko Kayukawa's rock n roll, nature loving dream girls have
bewitched viewers since her first show in the US at Roq La Rue in
2001. Since then, her career has soared and garnered her sold out
shows all over the country. For this show she remains true to her
vision, yet has made the full leap to working on canvas after working
on board for years. Dynamic, vital and full of pop references,
traditional japanese graphics, and cute animals, this show won't
disappoint her fans.

Ojimbo returns to the gallery after laying low and carving in his
basement in Ohio for a year, getting ready to unleash a whole new
group of phenomenal pop culture/monster wooden totem poles and wall
pieces. Intricately detailed and carved, then painted and given an
aged patina, these pieces feature horror motifs with a generous dose
of humor.

It's often hard to acquire work by these artists so let us know if
you'd like to be on the preview list! kirsten@roqlarue.com

Dracula: A Case Study

Monkey Wrench Puppet Lab presents:

Dracula: A Case Study Count Dracula is finally dead. Or is he?

A handful of survivors from Bram Stoker's original tale have been locked up in Dr. John Seward's insane asylum, their minds having proved too fragile to withstand Dracula's terror. Dr. Seward has developed a fascinating new therapy to restore his tortured patients to sanity. They are using puppets to relive the events of the novel and to reach an understanding of what REALLY happened when they fell under Dracula's evil spell. On the verge of a monumental breakthrough, Dr. Seward is inviting a knowledgeable audience to witness the proceedings. Monkey Wrench Puppet Lab dares you to observe these controversial techniques as we probe the damaged minds of the victims of the Dark Prince.

This mesmerizing new puppet spectacle is brought to you by the talented puppeteers of Monkey Wrench Puppet Lab, the creators of Frankenocchio, Jello-A-Go Go, Halfpenny Opera and Drunk Puppet Nite. In Dracula: A Case Study, Seattle's favorite puppeteers use a compelling assortment of puppet styles, projections, acting and music to recreate the inner workings of a Victorian-era insane asylum. The show is written and directed by Brian Kooser, the mastermind behind Frankenocchio. In addition to the puppet talents of Monkey Wrench, Dracula presents the original music of Ensemble Sub Masa to create a puppet tale unlike anything you've even seen.
Produced with financial support from Seattle Mayor's Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs, 4 Culture, the Jim Henson Foundation for Puppetry, and Artist Trust.

Grist.org organic cocktail party

Hi PV – Grist.org is a Seattle based green news and opinion website that covers green topics in an irreverent, funny and intelligent tone. Newsweek called us the Daily Show for the environment, a comparison we’ll gladly take! Anyway, we’re throwing an organic cocktail party to celebrate the launch of our first foray into fiber space (100% recycled, of course) and wanted to extend an invite to your readers. Details below.

Cheers,
Brendon

Hello Seattle neighbors!

Ah, the Emerald City: home to Grey's Anatomy, grunge, and Grist. It's also the site of our upcoming reader party, and you're invited to help us celebrate the launch of our first book! On October 17, come mingle with Grist staff and other readers, enjoy a delectable organic happy hour, and check out our book, Wake Up and Smell the Planet, before the soy ink has even dried.

We'll have more tasty treats than you can throw a fish at: savory fare from PCC and drinks from Square One Organic Vodka, Redwood Creek Wines and New Belgium Brewery. Make sure your posse's on Broadway -- er, at the Last Supper Club -- on Wednesday, October 17! Get your tickets now -- space is limited, and seats will be gone faster than Kurt and Jimi.

WHO: You and your 21-and-over pals (forward this to your friends)
WHEN: Wednesday, October 17, 5:30pm - 8:30pm
WHERE: The Last Supper Club, 124 S Washington St, Seattle, WA 98104
WHY: So many reasons ...

1. Because it's always fun to have a cocktail with the neighbors.
2. We'll have books available for purchase -- be the first on your block to hold Grist in your hand!
3. Get a chance to win a membership from 41 Pounds, a service that stops junk mail.
4. If nothing else, you'll score some tasty complimentary snacks and drinks.

HOW MUCH MOOLAH? $20 in advance, $25 at the door

men in underwear (world premiere) @ On the Boards

Hi Party Volcano,

We’re thrilled that John Jasperse, perhaps America ’s leading experimental choreographer, has chosen to premiere his newest show in Seattle at On the Boards before taking the show to the Brooklyn Academy of Music 2 weeks later. In Misuse liable to prosectuion 5 dancers dive into capitalism - seduction, wealth, whoring, philanthropy and blood money. Everything used in the production - props, sets, costumes - were found, borrowed or stolen. Jasperse’s mind-blowing performances combine elegant movement and beautiful stage design with humor and intelligence. Electric harp siren Zeena Parkins will perform an original score live for each performance.

GMP #31 - Pirates of the CariBeacon (9/29/2007)

Hey Guerrillas!

Big thanks to everyone who dressed up, went out, and took over the
Beacon Pub on September 29th. They certainly were surprised by the
dozens and dozens of Pirates (and a viking or two, and pyrite, and...)
that showed up - so surprised that they initially wouldn't let us in!
But after the confusion was cleared up and they realized that Pirates
bring lots of booty to purchase lots of grog, they opened the doors
and welcomed us in (for a $5 cover - darnit).

Our photos have been posted in the GMP gallery at
http://www.gmpseattle.com/gallery/

And the MidBeaconHill Blog posted photos at:
http://midbeaconhill.blogspot.com/2007/09/pirates-of-caribbeacon-at-beacon-pub.html

As always, please share your photos with the group via the YahooGroups
Photo Albums. Just click on the folder for the party you have
pictures of, then click 'Add Photo' to upload one or more photos to
the album.
http://ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/GMPSeattle/photos/browse?b=17&m=t&o=5

And stay tuned for info from our pals at Seattle Urban Golf, who are
planning their next costumed golf tourney through the city next month:

Until next time...
