Burlesque show at El Corazon There is a lot of Burlesque in Seattle. You can get on any number of the mailing lists and go see the same girls tittilate you, however, this show is being put on by one of our list members an it's the first shwo she has produced here in town.
What does that mean? Well, the phrase "Fresh Meat' comes to mind. But in reality what it means is Fresh Talent. It's not the same set of girls, it's new performance peices, and it's probably worth going and checking it out.
Oh yeah, and there are some bands there as well... (duh.)

(for those that have thought that tattoos were a bit mild:

The hiss of a blowtorch. The glow of steel heated to a cherry red. The momentary fear of wondering how it will feel. The sudden touch of steel to flesh. The tension is released and the endorphins flare as the mark is made. The final result is work of art. This is the body branding experience.

Elwood will be presenting a workshop on the art, safety, and aesthetics of body branding with a live branding demonstration. Topics that will be covered will include a brief history of body branding, what designs work for a brand, the various methods of branding, temporary branding, things to never let someone do you to with branding, and the aftercare of a brand.

Elwood is a professionally trained and certified body piercer and body brander, scarification and suspension artist and photographer. He was trained in San Francisco, California by Fakir Musafar, (the father of the Modern Primative and man who is credited with bringing body piercing to the western world).

As an educator and body modification practitioner, Elwood is known for his humorous personality while educating audiences on a variety of classes and workshops. He is acknowledged for his vast knowledge of the history of body modification and practical safety.

Elwood has presented numerous workshops surrounding body modification topics for BIO, VASM, Libido Events, Seattle's Wet Spot, Edmonton O Society, Victoria's Sagacity, Nanaimo and Winnipeg's Distinguished Lecturer Series.

Elwood has also been featured on Television with appearances on Shaw's "Urban Rush", Discovery Channel's "Skin Deep", TLC's "Human Canvas: Sacred Skin" and on MTV Canada's "Select". Elwood has also been featured in various print mediums.

His commitment to advanced safety has also led to Elwood becoming an educator to the Simon Fraser Health Authority for the body modification industry.

Born in 1974 in San Paulo Brazil, Gui Boratto, architect, musician, composer and producer initiated his career in the advertising sector in 1993. >From 1994 until 2004 he performed various works for countless record labels both national and international. Lusine is the brainchild of Jeff McIlwain for his visceral, melodic vision of abstract electronic music. Since making the move to Ghostly in 2003, Lusine has released "Push" , "Flat" Remixes, and the "Inside/Out" EP, as well as the stunning and widely-lauded "Serial Hodgepodge" full-length from 2004. He is one of the foremost American producers in the abstract field and an artist with a boundless future in his craft.

That mitten you dropped somewhere, your first best friend, the 80's (before they came back). An alien pod baby, your family, the slow kid. Whether it was advantageous or tragic, with resolution or unbeknownst to us, we've all left stuff (or someone) in our wake; and most likely, we know what it feels like to have been left behind at one time, too.

"Left Behind" captures various aspects of what being left behind entails, interpreted by each artist with personal experiences coloring his or her work. From humorous to tragic, the possibilities are endless.

There was a time when people said painting was dead. I think what they meant was GOOD painting was dead. It's back.

Seven Propositions is an exhibition composed of seven painters working in seven distinct modes exploring the boundaries of their medium. Centered on the work of four emerging Seattle artists, the exhibition works through figuration, abstraction, narration, still life and landscape painting to ask what it means to be a painter in the contemporary age.

“I want to drag klezmer music kicking and screaming back into the bars.”

That’s the goal of Vancouver singer-songwriter-accordion player Geoff Berner.

His first EP, “Light Enough to Travel”, released on the punk rock label Sudden Death Records in 2001, was an eclectic mix of song styles, united by the fact that it was recorded with only voice and solo accordion accompaniment. The reaction from press and audiences tended to fall into 2 categories: puzzled horror or puzzled but sincere appreciation of the great songwriting and the sheer chutzpah of appearing alone on stage with an accordion. By 2003, with the release of the full-length CD “We Shall Not Flag or Fail, We Shall Go to the End”, his fan base grew enough that Berner was able to quit working as a freelance writer and earn his living solely by traveling the world, playing his music.

Amy Denio ( Seattle , Washington )
Denio is a composer, singer, multi-instrumentalist, audio engineer, international collaborator, record producer, and founder of her own record label & publishing company, Spoot Music. Her main instruments are voice, accordion, alto saxophone, clarinet, electric guitar, and bass.

She has been playing accordion since she first brought one home from Budapest in the early 1990s, and since then has composed all kinds of toe-tapping songs for voice & squeezebox. Her style is a gutsy and rhythmic melange of folk, gypsy, and North African influences. She often invites the audience to partici pat e, which can be surprising and fun.

REBEL VISIONS in Georgetown

Attention all Crumb fans!

Don't miss “REBEL VISIONS: The Underground Comix Revolution” opening
this Saturday, January 12 from 11:30 to 8:00 PM at Fantagraphics
Bookstore & Gallery in Seattle. This colorful art show will
complement “R. Crumb’s Underground” exhibition opening January 26 at
the Frye Art Museum in Seattle.

Organized by comix historian, author and archivist Patrick
Rosenkranz, in association with Fantagraphics resident curator Larry
Reid, “REBEL VISIONS” features original artwork, artifacts and relix
from masters of the underground era. Highlights include a previously
unseen original drawing by Rick Griffin, recently discovered by L. A.
collector Greg Escalante; rarely viewed original art by feral genius
S. Clay Wilson; and locally created original artwork by the legendary
Greg Irons, who followed his underground work with a prolific career
as a tattoo artist working at the storied Seattle Tattoo Emporium
prior to his untimely death in 1984.

A wide selection of comix, graphic novels, and histories of this
wildly creative period in American illustration, cartooning and
graphic art from Fantagraphics Books others will be available. We
also have new offerings by popular Fantagraphics artists including
Jason, Ellen Forney, Dan DeCarlo, and others – as well as a limited
supply of the coveted BEASTS!, recently unearthed in our cavernous
warehouse.

Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is located at 1201 S. Vale St. (at
the corner of Airport Way S.) in the heart of Georgetown, only
minutes south of downtown Seattle. We’re open daily 11:30 to 8:00 PM,

Weekend visitors should be aware that a 3-block stretch of Airport
Way will be closed to auto traffic directly across from our space on
Jan. 12 & 13 and Jan. 19 & 20 during the demolition of the historic –
but structurally unstable - Stock House of the original Rainier
Brewery. (A sad event, but wrecking balls are always entertaining).
Ample parking will be available north and south of this closure.

And Seahawk fans should know that Saturday’s NFL playoff game will be
projected on big screen at neighboring watering hole 9 Lb. Hammer.
Drop by and see “REBEL VISIONS” before or after the win.

Hi friends,

Lots of things are happening with my art over the next few months, so I thought I'd tell you about them. Most of it's out of town, but who knows? maybe you have friends in these cities that might like to see my work.

First off, several pieces from my Bound series debut at the Deborah Colton Gallery in Houston, TX, opening this Saturday, January 12th. I'll be giving a talk with the curator and another artist at 2pm.

Second: my Milky self-portrait appears in 40 Portraits/40 Artists at Gallery One in Ellensburg, WA, opening Friday, February 1st.

Third: the Milky Series is going to auction in Toronto for SNAP!, the AIDS Committee of Toronto’s annual photographic fundraiser featuring a live auction of curated art, a silent auction, and photo competition. The auction happens on Sunday, March 2nd. More info at snap-toronto.com

And last but not least, you can now purchase a limited-edition hand-made book of my scandalous photographs from EARL 3.0– the robotic art dealer, located at the Hideout, our favorite art bar on Seattle's First Hill. Thanks to all of you who came out to our friends and fam party on the 29th of last month. That was a really good time and it was great to see familiar faces, some of whom I had not seen for far too long!

I'll keep this brief.

We're moving our Beat Council Night to Tost every second Saturday.

We have a great show coming up this Saturday January 12th. And it's no cover . .. aka free!!!!

Fremont First Friday Art Walk

Fremont First Friday Art Walk is January 4th, 2008 from 6-9pm - Rain or Shine!

Earthly Rituals is pleased to present the art of Jim Metcalfe. Experience a travel log in watercolors. Jim's paintings create tranquil images capturing settings from around the world. Jim Metcalfe is a self taught artist. Traveling and painting have been a continuum throughout his life. Frame Up Studios will be showcasing Suzanne Todd and her Monotype prints rich with color, diverse texture and combinations of complex patterns and layers found in nature and in all aspects of relationship, from the way we engage with our surroundings, to the way we treat each other. Fremont Jewelry Design presents Northwest native Anne Anderson's unique Silk paintings of deep & rich, luminous colors. This difficult, unique art form is similar to the watercolor process, however, the medium is quite different: Silk, wax, & dyes. Crispin Hellion Glover returns with the second installment of a trilogy that began with WHAT IS IT?. Glover's latest film is another mind-bending foray into unexplored territory that will challenge expectations and defy conventions. The screenwriter, Steven C. Stewart, is also the star (Stewart had cerebral palsy and passed away shortly after filming). The film begins in a nursing home, with our "hero" lying helpless on the floor. While he is being carried back to his bed, the world shifts into one where his charms are recognized and the ladies swoon, leading to a series of torrid sexual conquests. But the man's years of frustration at being an outcast have planted a dark and evil seed. Soon his actions take a morbid turn.

Glover uses his visionary cinematic skills to bring to life the graphically explicit psychosexual fantasy world of a man shunned by women and society who lusts after intimacy, acceptance, and a full head of long hair. The beauty of Glover's direction lies in his ability to create an atmosphere that is strange and unsettling, sensual and erotic. Through Stewart's caustic fantasy life, Glover subverts the conventional devices of a suspense film and makes an audacious statement on the conundrum of sexual politics.

Join us on Saturday night as we reprise Glover's unique, mythic, visionary film WHAT IS IT!, which screened to three sold out crowds last year.

All performances proceeded by Glover's one-hour slide show, which consists of ten different stories dramatically narrated by Glover himself. The slides are from pages of books that he has reworked with original and transformed art.

University Art Institute: Keynote Lecture by Robert Storr

Using contemporary art as a catalyst for exploration, the University Art Institute encourages diverse audiences to engage in multiple perspectives on timely artistic and social issues.

Robert Storr is an internationally renowned curator, critic, academic, and artist. He has been a contributing editor at Art in America since 1981 and writes frequently for Artforum, Parkett, Art Press, and Frieze. From 1990 to 2000 he was the Museum of Modern Art’s contemporary curator. Storr is currently Dean of the Yale School of Art and Consulting Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. He is Director of the 2007 Venice Biennale, Think with the Senses - Feel with the Mind. Art in the Present Tense.

In conjunction with the closing of Kim Jones: A Retrospective, Storr will speak on Jones and his work’s inclusion in the 2007 Venice Biennale and at Site Santa Fe in 2004. This lecture will also conclude the Henry’s University Art Institute, an annual initiative that develops and expands opportunities for dialogue, access, and participation in specific Henry exhibitions.
