Rachmaninov Keyboard Fireworks

Elena writes:

Hi,

The Seattle Symphony is making a special order to members of the
Russian community, with the hope that the time of the concert might be
convenient for our elderly people, or all those who don't work. The
program almost entirely consists of the very famous Russian works that
we all love (you can disregard the first piece on the program, it's
only 5').

Friday, September 28, 1pm

Rachmaninov Keyboard Fireworks
Gerard Schwarz, conductor
Cécile Licad, piano

Bright Sheng: Tibetan Love Songs
Rachmaninov: Piano Concerto No. 2
Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 4

The tickets are only $12 for Russians. If you want to buy tickets,
call or email Jessica Howard at 206.215.4784 or
Jessica.Howard@SeattleSymphony.org and mention that you are a member
of the Russian group.

Please pass this info to your friends/relatives who might be interested.

Motel #2: Payday Gala

MOTEL #1 at the Bridge Motel on 15 September was a spectacular bonanza, igniting a firestorm of media, and attracting over 1500 enthusiastic art lusters. Pix! In fact it was so much of a success that the owners of the Ambassador Motel (the planned host of MOTEL #2) freaked out and pulled the plug at the last minute. They were worried about too much attention. But fret not. The organizers have secured another location to launch MOTEL #2: the week long endurance festival that takes place in one room of a working motel. However, the motel will not be revealed to the general public just yet. Phone 206-782-8872 on Friday 21 September for location details. You can peer through the motel room window from the outside looking in to view the performances at any time during this week. This is a working motel – do NOT bother other occupants. Too many people chit-chattin outside the room and they may decide to kick us out. No more than 5 viewers at any one time. As MOTEL #1 was a whirring maelstrom, MOTEL #2 is a lasered workhorse. Performance artists have committed to working shifts of no less than 8 hours, 24/7, during which they will clock in their intense and sometimes grueling pieces. This ain’t your gampy’s “happenings”. You will also be able to see the artists performing their endurance pieces live online via the magic of webcams and the Internet. All performances will still be held in one room in a working motel on HWY 99, the dirtiest, smelliest, prostitutest, violentest strip in Seattle. Check out the schedule below for bios and piece descriptions. Performances will be recorded and embedded on the artists' pages.

A "Payday Gala" ends the week of performances. A small get-together marks the everyday accomplishments of surviving through another week, figuratively for some and literally for others. The roster of artists will gather informally in the room sharing stories and refreshments. There may or may not be a bucket of chicken.

Well, I have heard different things about Motel #1. I almost went and learned later that it was lame. The Stranger had written about Motel #1 and about 1000 people showed up. The place was packed and not prepared for that many people. The 'art' (we'll get to that in a second) was on the 2nd floor and they only let a few people in at a time. As a result the first floor was so packed that you could barely move. Unfortunately many people decided to use the 2nd floor as a hang out area (who would blame them: the 1st floor was too full) adding to the problem that it took forever to see the exhibition. Was it worth it? Apparently not. My sources told me that the installations were lame - embarrassing to be precise. One room showed a fire; in another one you could watch three men sitting in a room through a TV set. The rest I forgot - it was so lame.
I like the idea but from what I have heard the execution was poor.

You can read the description of the Motel #1 pieces here:

Summer Love, part 4: The Aftermath

Hello friends,
I'm not sure if it's official yet, but for all practical purposes, summer is
basically over. I hope you all enjoyed yours as much as I did. This was the
busiest summer I've had yet, and my circle of friends has grown wonderfully
larger. A big welcome to all the peeps new to my list. Sometimes these
emails can seem pretty lengthy, but they're almost always worth reading till
the end. In fact this is one of those emails, kinda long, but worth the
read. I'll get right to the goods, by starting off with some thank you's.

I want to thank all the people that came out to Playa Envy on Sept 1st
which, I've been told, was the best burn night party anyone's thrown in
Seattle. Also big thank you to all my crew and volunteers that helped pull
it off. You're all amazing!
Many thanks are in order for all the crew and participants at this year's
Sunset Seattle in Golden Gardens Park! This year blew away the previous t2o
years on multiple levels. We're really excited to carry on the tradition at
the end of next summer and beyond.
I also want to send a quick thank you to all the crew responsible for
Decibel Festival. This is consistantly one of my favorite events every year.
Keep up the good werk!

Now onto the real matter at hand, promoting upcoming events...

SOIL 2007 Art Auction

Hello,
Rebecca Gillman's Blue Surge opens next Thursday at the Chamber Theater on Capitol Hill.
Thank you!

Bad Monkey Productions Presents
Blue Surge
By Rebecca Gillman
Directed by Elissa Walstead
Show Runs : October 4 - 20. Thursday, Friday & Saturday at 8 p.m.

Additional information is available at www.badmonkeyprod.com

About the Show
Blue Surge tells the story of Curt, a small-town cop, and Sandy, the 18-year-old prostitute he meets during a raid on a massage parlor. Curt finds an unlikely friend in Sandy and begins a relationship with her that puts everything he's worked for - his career, his friendships, and his engagement to his fiancée - at risk. But Curt sees a future with Sandy and an escape from his difficult past.

"Gilman tackles what may be her trickiest subject yet: the relationship between history and destiny...She examines the role that class and background can play in shaping an individual's values and expectations...[an] absorbing drama which reaffirms Gilman's flair for dialogue at once stringently intelligent and utterly natural." ( USA Today)

"...Ms. Gilman has the undeniable virtue of focusing with lucidity and evenhandedness on subjects that are more often sensationalized in the popular arts." ( New York Times)

Location: Chamber Theatre - 915 E. Pine Street, 4th Floor Seattle, WA 98122. Pay lot parking is available at the west side of the building on Broadway & Pike. General Admission: $15 advance or $18 at the door. Pay-what-you-can performance on October 4th. Tickets: ticketwindowonline.com or 206/325-6500 www.badmonkeyprod.com

Strange Brew @ BLVD gallery

Hi friends
Just wanted to thank everybody who had a chance to make it to our
"Claimin' Space" exhibit at the Bumbershoot Arts Festival here in
Seattle over Labor Day Weekend. It was alot of fun and a great
opportunity to share all of the amazing artists who inspire us with a
great new group of people. I think something like 30k people walked
through the show, Simply amazing. If you were unable to make it we have
setup a Flickr page with a ton of great shots of all of the action
during the show -
http://www.flickr.com/photos/34625500@N00/sets/72157601511077162/
There was some great work on display that is also available for
purchase.
View it here - http://blvdart.com/showpages/claimin/claimin_gallery.html

"Strange Brew" , curated by Seattle artist Robert Hardgrave, is a
unique opportunity to see an exciting new wave of young creatives
coming out of the Great White North who are showing there is more to
Canada than Labatts and Maple Leafs. Each artist's work utilizes their
own personal conventions and symbols, whether it be drawing or
painting, presenting intimate, thoughtful surfaces for the viewer to
absorb. The work on display is an amalgamation of the influences that
are found within Canada, from the amazing asian inspired drawings of
Peter Taylor to the folk qualities of Matthew Feylds' paintings,
Curator Robert Hardgrave has chosen work that best illustrates the high
degree of quality from these artists as well as work that is personally
inspiring for him.

sub-Rosa (premiere) @ Langston Hughes Theatre

Nassim writes:

Dear Friends,

My friend, the lovely, talented, and visionary dancer/choreographer, Cheronne Wong, will be performing in her first new show in a couple years. I saw the work-in-progress of Sub Rosa and it was intriguing, beautiful, and truly unique. Miguel and I will be going to the opening on 9/14, which happens to be Cheronne's birthday too (The day is happily in a small time window between book trips for me).

Do you want to join us? Or maybe you'll go another day? Please spread the word (esp Don PV) and try to support dance in Seattle. Langston Hughes Theatre is also very nice.

Hugs, Nassim

Here are the details:

sub-Rosa premieres for 2 weekends at the Langston Hughes Performing
Arts Center in Seattle on Sept 14-15 and 21-22, 2007. Using inventive
movement, powerful theatricality and striking visual landscapes, this
multimedia full-evening piece explores an international undercover
world, the unveiling of masked identities and covert communication
using numeric code. sub-Rosa is inspired by the phenomenon of
shortwave numbers stations rumored to be a document of covert
communications of the world's secret agencies. This project is co-
sponsored by the Bossak/Heilbron Charitable Foundation, 4Culture and
the Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs, City of Seattle. After the
Seattle premiere, the project will tour to Tacoma School of the Arts
and Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA.

Cheronne Wong, originally from Malaysia, has been choreographing in
Seattle for the past 8 years. Locally her work has been produced at
many venues including On the Boards, King County Performance Network,
Seattle Asian Art Museum and Velocity. Her company has toured/taught
nationally and internationally at Jacobs’ Pillow Dance Festival
(MA), Mulberry Street Theater and Judson Church (NYC), Wexner Center
(OH), Performance Works (Portland) and National Arts Academy
(Malaysia). She has received commissions/residences from Mulberry
Street Theater, NWAAT, Centrum Arts, Aono Jikken Ensemble; and grants
from 4Culture, Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs, Bossak/Heilbron
and Allied Arts. She is a founding partner of Open Flight Studio, a

The Bridge Motel (3650 Bridge Way N, off Aurora, in Fremont) will host a one-night only event to kick off the MOTEL series on 15 September 2007, 5 PM - midnight. Built in 1952 by a retired policeman, the motel has anchored the north end of the infamous Aurora Bridge for decades in welcoming glory. Originally a place frequented by tourists and traveling salesmen, the Bridge Motel has over time become more a place for those living from paycheck to paycheck, and whose lives involve drug use, prostitution, and the like. In the popular imagination, the place embodies and realizes that underbelly, shady side of life's toiling. There has been murders here, and numerous drug busts, its decaying artifice contains the stories of a full lifetime of drama, and the day by day passing through of souls ... For one night, its last night of existence, the Bridge Motel will be dressed up and called to shine and dance ... Numerous installation/performance artists have been given full rein the week prior, to transform each dilapidated pocket into whatever they could imagine. The opening evening will reveal the Bridge's final blossom before its inevitable razing. And to top it off, every inch of the motel will be crawling with performance artists, injecting the animation and energy of truly ephemeral art. The stellar roster of artists involved is sure to create a cacophony of sights and sounds to inspire the mind and heart, and give the aging motel a proper dress-up before it's demise ... This night is not to be missed.

Thread Show in Fremont

Greetings!

Hi, hope you're doing well. It's already fall again and we're heading into that time when the kiddies go back to school and everyone else starts shopping again. This Sunday is two of the best shows Seattle has to offer, Thread at the Fremont Film Studios and I Heart Rummage at the Crocodile.

I'll have a booth at Thread this time but I won't be able to double up and be at IHR so please come visit me between 11am-6pm in Fremont. This show rocks with an art show from BLVD gallery, tons of independent designers, a discount denim rack from Zebra Club and a wig shop set up by Vain hair salon.

I Heart Rummage will take place this Sunday from 12-4 at the Crocodile Cafe with art and independent designers, brunch and a live dj. check it out, it's always fun.

IHR at the Crocodile Cafe
2200 2nd Ave.

Hope to see you out and about,

Co-Motion @ Buddha Belltown

Jason writes:

Hi, I’m hoping I can get you to put my event in your list of recommendations for Saturday, September 15th. This is our second installment of a night we call “Co-Motion”. The night features DJs J. Schell and Professor Direkt spinning funk, hip hop, and new wave, a fashion show courtesy of MF Magazine, loads of models showcasing the work, plus giveaways, and drink specials. Last time we had a lot of people come; in fact we promise to get the line out the door moving faster this time! It was a great event and if our success continues we plan to make it a Seattle tradition. All of the feedback we got from guests was positive too. Our venue is Buddha Belltown ( 2222 2nd Ave ) and there’s no cover; it starts at 9pm and ends at 2am. Since there was a line last time and we eventually reached capacity, we recommend coming early!

All that put simply:

Co-Motion Music | Community | Fashion | Gathering Buddha Belltown: 2222 2nd Ave Saturday, September 15th 9pm-2am MF Magazine, DJ J. Schell, Professor Direkt

Reading of a new screenplay by Bret Fetzer

WHAT: 'A is for Apple', a new screenplay by Bret Fetzer, about a high
school history teacher who has an affair with a student...but he's the one
telling you the story. What can you believe? Is Paul Bryant an ordinary
guy caught up in an extraordinary passion...or a sleazy, predatory,
self-pitying creep?

WHEN: Monday, Sept 17, at 7 pm

WHERE: Seattle Repertory Theatre's PONCHO Forum, 155 Mercert St, Seattle
Center

HOW MUCH: A mere $2

HOW LONG: No more than 90 minutes. Probably shorter. I'm still
finishing it. The reading will be followed by a short feedback session.
(There will be a brief pause twixt reading and feedback to allow those who
wish to leave to do so.)

In plugging the reading of my screenplay, I forgot to include my biggest
selling point, which is the fantastic cast of readers:

Daniel Christensen
Kate Czajkowski
Peggy Gannon
David Goldstein
Bronte Neel
Peter Dylan O'Connor

If that cast doesn't tempt you to come to a narrative-twisting,
gender-bending tale of pedophilia and lower education, I don't know what
will.

Yours,
Bret Fetzer

Opening @ Roq La Rue

Roq La Rue Gallery
presents

Amy Sol
Stella Im Hultberg
Oksana Badrak

opening Friday September 7th 6-9pm
(Amy Sol and Stella Im Hultberg will be in attendance)

We have a fantastic show for you this month with a show by three
artists who work with feminine/natural imagery.
Amy Sol is white hot right now, with her paintings of dreamy,
fantastical worlds populated by girls and their animal companions.
Her soft graphic imagery on wood is complimented by a unique color
palette, customized by Amy (she mixes all her paints from scratch) to
further increase a sense of enigmatic mystery to the "stories" in
each painting.

Stella Im Hultberg paints romantic yet edgy women who vacillate
between innocence and sultriness, set off by her lanky, sharp line-
work contrasted by soft watercolors. This show will feature a
departure for Stella, with the introduction of several paintings on
canvas, as well as on paper.

Oksana Badrak creates lush pop imagery using a blend of digital
technology topped by meticulously hand painted elements. Creating
digital environments, Oksana then takes the organic creatures in her
work and paints them in oil in high detail. This adds to the
dichotomy found in her work with the uneasy coexistence of man made
technology and the natural world. (She also just did the cover of
KEXP's new cd)

In addition, because it's the end of summer, ALREADY, we will have a
mini exhibit of exquisite and humorous drawings by our gal Femke
Heimstra from a series called "Heatwave" depicting the trials and
tribulations of summertime. We will be offering original graphite
drawings as well as a print series made from the drawings and then
digitally colored. These are offered individually or as a special
print set!

Contact us to be put on a preview list for this show!

Artist reception @ CoCA

CoCA Belltown Gallery presents Photo Collages by John Schuh for the months of September and October, with an Artist's Reception on the terrace above the gallery from 7 - 9 pm.

John Schuh is a photographer who creates images in two steps, first by photographic his subject or thematic content from hundreds of different angles, and then cutting and assembling small prints of these images into a larger image at a much larger scale. The relationship between the larger and smaller images can be compared to a fractal, as the images are often self-similar at multiple scales.

CoCA's Belltown Gallery is an urban "show case" that creates a lively, dynamic installation space for artists of all media and disciplines. Located on the first floor of the Avenue One Condominiums at 2721 First Avenue, the gallery is viewable through the three windows on the Clay Street side.

The Great Art Party!

A Benefit for Floating Bridge Press

Dear poetry lovers near and far,

I hope that summer continues on for for you for at least a few more weeks.
Fight against the dying of the light, right?

In that spirit, I invite you to the Great Art Party this Friday evening at
6:30 at the armory in Seattle. This is the first fund raiser that Floating
Bridge Press has ever thrown and the purpose of it is to have a great time
and to raise money for an endowment ~ poetry forever ~ that's our motto.

Here's the deal: 100 guests; 100 pieces of art. Nationally known and
Northwest artists have donated over 100 of their works including sculpture,
glass art, paintings ~ and even a car ~ for this event. Everyone leaves with
a piece of art. If you can't come, but want me to get the art for you,
that's also easy enough. Download the art catalogue from the site listed
below and choose your favorite pieces. At 6:30 we will start drawing
numbers, if your number is #1, you get your fist choice. And if you are
drawn at #100, you will still have a choice.

Here's the web site that explains this all better than I have:

http://www.fbpevents.com/

Please check it out!

I have readings in Burlington, VT, Eugene, OR, and all over Washington this
fall so I hope to see you.

As always, if you want off this list just let me know.

Would love to see you Friday night,

Susan

Next up is Bebel Gilberto on Monday, September 10 at the Showbox. Bebel is touring to support her latest album Momento, and Fusion is proud to sponsor her Seattle show. Read on for a chance to win tickets. Congrats to John B, our winner from last week. His answer to our question is below.

Originally from Brazil , now living in New York , Bebel Gilberto consistently delivers the laid back sounds of the beach. Touring to support her latest release, Momento, it's a shame she's not playing an outdoor venue. Listening to Bebel takes you back to when you were chilling in Ipanema with a Caiparinha in one hand and a croquette with cream cheese in the other.

Fusion Radio has a pair of tickets to give away for Bebel Gilberto. To be entered to win, send an email to fusion@fusionradio.net with the title of your favorite Bebel song. Send it by Friday 9/7 @ 12p with your name and phone number so we can contact you. Winners will be drawn at random from all entries.
