Please note that the event begins at 8pm rather than 7pm and we recommend arriving around that time to ensure entrance!

There will be two lines at the door: one will be for members and Armory Show VIP pass holders and one for those who are signing up to become members. We will only be accepting cash or personal checks at the door, so please be prepared. All guests must become members (or make a $25 donation) as well.

This show will boast some new features and surpises! As well, we have as fantastic a slideshow as ever-- stay tuned for a list of contributors.

Please bear in mind that this is a participation-based event! It wouldn't be Slideluck Potshow without your mouth-watering couscous, your arepas de queso, your sweet potato salad, or your lemon meringue pie! And if you aren't able to cook, please pick something up on the way.

Kindly bring something nice to drink as well! We are avoiding red wine for the most part at this event, so a bottle of white, spirits, bubbly, or beer is preferable. We will have plenty of mixers and bars on all three floors.

Be prepared for a unique and exciting evening! Look sharp and bring a smile.

Until then,

PUNCH Presents: Justin Gibbens + Amy Ross

Animal Spell
Justin Gibbens + Amy Ross

April 3 – 27, 2008
Opening Reception: Thursday, April 3, 2008, 5-8 pm

Exhibition Link
Download Press Release in Word Format

PUNCH presents the work of Justin Gibbens and Amy Ross. Referencing early wildlife and botanical illustration, both artists demonstrate their own distinctive versions of a subversive natural history.

As a contemporary (wildlife) artist, Gibbens draws upon his obsessive, perhaps unhealthy interest in all things that scamper and poke about in the thickets and undergrowth. Influenced by a recent trip to Bavaria and chance encounters with vintage taxidermy while there, Gibbens sheds light on jackalopes, wolpertingers and other legendary beasts.

Amy Ross is interested in the idea of artist as mad scientist. Her drawings and collages offer visual hypotheses to the question: what would happen if the DNA sequences of humans, animals, plants, and mushrooms were spliced with each other? These hybrids become her interpretation of a perverse natural world wrought by genetic engineering and mutation gone awry.

Boston-based artist Amy Ross attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and also holds degrees in religious studies from Connecticut College and Harvard Divinity School. She has had solo exhibitions at Jen Bekman Gallery in NYC, Allston Skirt Gallery in Boston, Overtones in Los Angeles, Romo Gallery in Atlanta, and Motel in Portland. Her work has been reviewed in the New York Times, the Boston Globe, the Washington Post, and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Justin Gibbens lives in Thorp, Washington. He is a founding member of PUNCH gallery. He has shown nationally and internationally, and concurrently is showing at G.Gibson Gallery in Seattle with artist Nealy Blau. Gibbens was the recipient of an Artist Trust GAP Award in 2007 and a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Award in 2006.

Soapland @ SOIL

April 3rd - 27th, 2008 at Soil

Soapland
Issei Watanabe

A large castle suspended in an uncanny sort of innocence represents only the very surface of Soapland. The castle is composed of individual cast-ceramic bricks shaped as bars of soap, which then go on to rest upon various materials of an artificial nature. This exhibit compares the differences between how things appear at a surface level and the realities which often lie beneath.

As a child growing up in Japan, the artist had become quite fascinated with the notion of Soapland, a term he often heard adults mention. Of course Soapland brings to mind a place of cleanliness and fairy-tale innocence. This sculptural piece explores the disconnect of a child's understanding with the adult reality. In this case the reality was ironically opposed to the assumptions of the child; in Japan Soapland refers to a red-light district.

Soapland is considered to be a place of degradation, but the word itself is ambiguous and suggests something quite the opposite. This work capitalizes on this discrepancy in language: a proud fortress built on dissemblance and lost innocence. Soapland acts as part of the artists ongoing exploration of the differences in culture, language, routine, and behavior between Japan and the United States.

In the backspace gallery Jana Brevick presents Thanks, Wavelength, a tribute to radio waves incorporating the intimate atmosphere of the backspace with precious materials to elevate this everyday physical phenomenon.

Queen Shmooquan final episode

This is your last chance to witness the full Queen Shmooquan hour long
experience! Please forward invite to everyone you love- death is just
a knock away, can you imagine dying without witnessing the Queen?

THE QUEEN SHMOOQUAN… "say my name" SHOW!
Final Episode of the Season: Psychic Surgery
April 3, 4, 5 8:00pm, $10 tickets @door
Jewel Box Theatre, Rendezvous, 2320 2nd ave

The Queen Shmooquan…"say my name " Show is a solo, absurdist
theatre/music/performance art show, featuring Queen Shmooquan in all
her rubber chicken lovin', transcendental glory.

Final Episode: Psychic Surgery
Queen Shmooquan will dance, sing and eat her way through a super-real
journey in which she tests the outer limits of her skills as a healer,
auditions for the lead role in a big Broadway musical and makes the
final leap from
super-human to super-being!

Queen Shmooquan will also be performing a a short piece from her
repertoire at the Moisture Fest Sat. March 29, Hales Brewery, 10:30.

Who is Queen Shmooquan? Queen Shmooquan is a modern day oracle… a
transcendental burlesque clown. Jeppa K Hall is Queen Shmooquan (shmoo
like "shmooze" and quan like "kwan"). Jeppa, as Queen Shmooquan, works
in the tradition of pop art clowning, influenced by artists such as
Charlie Chaplin and Pee Wee Herman. However, in the presentation of
her unusual, yet timely stories and bizarre images, the Queen creates
a new performative mythology. She transcends her Walmart purgatory,
intermarries familiar imagery of the shared collective americana
consciousness with the unknown and the cosmic, to create smart,
hilarious, beautiful, and surreal landscapes.

Norwescon 31 (Thu-Sun)

John writes:

THURSDAY, FRIDAY, SATURDAY, SUNDAY NORWESCON!!!

This is the event you have been waiting for. And, YES, the Klingon Drinking team WILL be there.

Below is a blurb from thier website, but it's pretty stoic. Think about 3000 people dressed as fairies, dragons, warriors, imperial storm troopers, your favorite smoking hot anime character, or just as a scantily clad alien female... All wandering the halls of this hotel in the party wing drinking heavily. There are loads of other activities there, so please just visit thier website at www.norwescon.org.

So, here is the blurb.
Norwescon is one of the largest regional Science Fiction conventions in the United States. While maintaining a primarily literary focus, Norwescon is large enough to provide a venue for many of the other aspects of Science Fiction and the interests of its fans such as anime, costuming, art, and much, much more.

Norwescon is the host convention for the prestigious Philip K. Dick Award, given to a distinguished original science fiction paperback published for the first time during the award year in the U.S.A.

Finally Norwescon is a lot of fun.

Samantha Power @ Town Hall

Andrew Havlis writes:

I first became aware of Samantha Power through an outstanding article she wrote for The Atlantic Monthly several years ago on the Rwanda genocide. Power did a lot of original research on the Clinton administration's response to that horror, namely that administration's efforts to prevent the UN from stopping the genocide. I quote Power:

[The U.S.] led a successful effort to remove most of the UN peacekeepers who were already in Rwanda. It aggressively worked to block the subsequent authorization of UN reinforcements. It refused to use its technology to jam radio broadcasts that were a crucial instrument in the coordination and perpetuation of the genocide. And even as, on average, 8,000 Rwandans were being butchered each day, U.S. officials shunned the term "genocide," for fear of being obliged to act.

It is mind-boggling, the moral perfidy of Clinton and his underlings, including the bright but disingenuous Madeline Albright who was then Clinton's ambassador to the UN and later his Secretary of State.

I mention this because I saw Albright speak a couple of months ago at Town Hall -- ironically enough, the location where Power will be speaking tomorrow. Albright is no doubt very smart and no doubt very politically savvy. She has done some good: during her speech she bragged that mothers in Kosovo name their daughters "Madeline" in honor of her. Most of the adoring audience ate it up.

I found it both fascinating and deeply disturbing the doublethink involved, both on the part of the many audience members who seemed to believe Albright a great champion of humanity and on the part of Albright, herself, who cast herself at every turn, in that light. I think of the survivors in Rwanda who most definitely are not naming their daughters "Madeline." It wasn't just a matter of no response on the part of Albright and Clinton to the genocide. It was as matter of actively working against the UN from stopping the genocide out of political inconvenience.

After hearing Albright trumpet her good name, I left the lecture enraged; the moral duplicity on Albright's part was breathtaking; the willful ignorance on the part of a sycophantic audience -- doubtless, good-hearted liberals who value human rights -- was heartbreaking.

Writers like Power are a bitter tonic, exactingly showing us the horrifying nature of modern politics.

Samantha Power talks about her new book, Chasing the Flame.

Rat City Rollergirls

Season Opener: Monsters and Mayhem

Season 4 Bout 1 PosterPresented by NWsource.com, this monster-themed first bout is sure to be a nail-biter, with the first match-up between the Sockit Wenches and the Throttle Rockets -- both teams have alumni skaters returning for duty (welcome back Holley Knock-hers, Dixie Dragstrip, Sassy Chassis, and Darth Skater!) and fresh meat just waiting to knock their very first jammer into the audience. Throttle Rockets are determined to prove they aren't a last-place team and the Sockit Wenches are on the look-out for their next championship trophy (gotta start early), so brutally snatched from their grasp last season.

Next up, Grave Danger is coming off of a triumphant win in 2007 (season champions!) but Derby Liberation Front is still the team to beat. Did you know that Grave Danger is the only team that has never beaten DLF? Come see if Grave Danger can topple the mighty wall of DLF and cement their place at the top of the dog-pile. Word on the street is that they trained all through the off-season in preparation for this game; will DLF be able to keep up with Femme Fatale's speed and withstand Skate Trooper's wicked blocks?

A portion of the proceeds will benefit our featured charity, the Pike Place Market Foundation. Tickets are sold OUT online, but if you were among the lucky few to get 'em in time, we'll see you there!

Crawl Space is pleased to present recent works by member artist Tim Brown, featuring a life-scale domestic interior drawn in string and a dining set suspended in resin. Sourced in both his childhood home and his current one, Brown's architectural pieces portray the hearth and home as primary containers for the intangible.
"The spaces I inhabit have always been based on the shape of the rectangular prism, the box. These boxes have served as the container, context, and framework for my experiences, thoughts, desires, and my everyday life. Place/Setting has come to be about filial intimacy and friendship, about the nature of this presence that inhabits the space in between people."

Brass Menazeri & Pangeo at The Tractor Tavern.

James writes:

This is a great show that is going to be happening in Seattle on Tuesday, March 25th. Two wonderful groups, Brass Menazeri and Pangeo, are going to be doing a show together at the Tractor Tavern in Ballard. I am not actually playing anything at this show but it's going to be a great show so I thought I should let people know about it.

Starting off the night is Pangeo, a group that features Greek folk musicians Christos Govetas and Ruth Hunter. Pangeo specializes in traditional dance music of Greece and the Balkans. They are "equally at home playing ballads from the mountains of Epiros in Greece or lively tunes from the Bulgarian and Albanian border areas." They will rock you with clarinet, zurna, accordian, guitar, and percussion, perhaps even some oud.

http://www.kyklosmusic.com/PANGEO/Pangeomain.html

And if seeing Pangeo live wasn't already good enough, which it is, coming up from the Bay Area for the second half of the night is Balkan Gypsy Brass Band Brass Menazeri. If you have yet to heard Gypsy Brass Band music music, clearly you should seize this opportunity. The group will "cascade through the music of the Serbian, Macedonian, Greek & Rajasthani Roma with wild rhythms, soulful vocals & hot improvisations." Da! They will seize you and shake you around, and perhaps induce you into a manic dancing frenzy.

Drew Friedman Show @ Fantagraphics

“THE FUN NEVER STOPS!” WITH DREW FRIEDMAN:
FANTAGRAPHICS BOOKSTORE & GALLERY IN SEATTLE, OPENING MARCH 27.

“Drew Friedman isn't just a brilliant artist. He takes you to a
place. He takes you back in time. He makes you smell the stale
cigarettes and cold brisket and you say thank you for the pleasure.”
— Sarah Silverman

Drew Friedman is among the most notorious illustrators and
cartoonists in America. According to Entertainment Weekly, “He holds
a marvelously warped lens up to crusty politicians and debauched
celebrities. A good-natured misanthrope with an obsessive style and a
sardonic tongue, Drew Friedman is one of the country’s sharper
political artists.” Freidman will appear in Seattle for the first
time at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery for a book signing and
exhibition of his original artwork on Thursday, March 27 from 5:00 to
8:00 PM.

“The Fun Never Stops!” exhibition features 17 portraits meticulously
rendered in Friedman’s singular style. Included are political figures
such as “McCain as Popeye,” “John Kerry’s Inauguration,” and “Really
Rich Rudy” as well as pop culture icons like Frank Sinatra, Woody
Allen, and Alfred E. Newman. In addition, Fantagraphics Books
produced a limited edition silkscreen print featuring George W. Bush
as Slim Pickens in the apocalyptic finale to “Dr. Strangelove.”
Friedman’s portraits are alternately savage satires or reverential
renderings – and frequently both, as in his series of “Old Jewish
Comedians,” recently published in two volumes by Fantagraphics Books.

Friedman’s illustrious career has included comics work published in
Art Spiegelman’s RAW, R. Crumb’s Weirdo and MAD Magazine, and
frequent illustrations in National Lampoon, The New York Times, The
New York Observer, among countless other publications. He was the
recipient of the 2001 Rueben Award for newspaper illustration.
Friedman’s work has been collected by Seattle’s Fantagraphics Books
in The Fun Never Stops!: An Anthology of Comic Art 1991 – 2006, Old
Jewish Comedians, MORE Old Jewish Comedians, and Warts and All.

“The Fun Never Stops!” begins with a reception for the artist on
Thursday, March 27 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. Admission is free to the
public of all ages. The exhibition continues though May 6, 2008.
Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is located at 1201 S. Vale Street

Robert Burden at Roq la Rue

Roq la Rue
Presents
Robert Burden
“Toybox”
Opening THIS Friday March 14th 6-9pm
runs through April 5th

Roq La Rue is pleased to present an amazing solo exhibition by emerging San Francisco artist Robert Burden. Burden paints the action figures taken from his youth, in large scale formats and epic atmospheres.. These large canvases are covered in baroque-like patterning and gilt framing, and a small box containing the actual toy accompanies each piece.

Thinking back on the toys he played with when young, Burden remembered them as being wonderful, almost magical things, magnificent, powerful, and beautiful. As an adult Burden found a box of these old toys and found them to be nothing more than cheap, mass produced plastic. The nebulousness of what can take a cheap yet coveted piece of plastic and turn it into an almost talismanic object for a kid inspired Burden as well as the amorphous line that is drawn between imagination and reality, childhood wonder and adult practicality. He created a series of paintings based on these toys, acting almost as a funerary commemoration to the powerful force of imagination and how things are perceived before boundaries can be placed on them. While trying to express the now faded feelings of awe he had as a child, he is careful to keep the truth of what the toy is in his work, rather than imbuing its physicality with anything extra. He says:

“The "toyness" is important to me. I want the painted depiction of the toy to be better than the real object, but I still definitely want the painting to maintain the sense that this is a toy, that this is a commodity. Because this is about the glorification of the commodity. It's a commodity-driven culture, and a consumer-based culture. Anyone could make the argument that consumerism is North America's predominant religion, or predominant opiate of the masses. If it's not consumerism, then it's film and television that are the cultural staples or opiates of choice. This is also why it's important for me to display the toy with the painting; it's like some kind of Saint's reliquary. It's an ironic devotional device. I'm glorifying the pop-culture, I loved the pop-culture, but I want to also depict the consumerist disposability of that same culture. I see, and love, the irony of spending hundreds of hours, and a great deal of my money (too much of my money!), in order to make a single object in honor of something that was cheaply mass-produced for millions of people. It's kind of Warholian, I guess, but I have a much greater affinity for GI Joe than I do for Campbell's Soup.”

The patterns that swirl around each piece are often taken from wallpaper patterns or decorated fabrics from his childhood home. Offsetting the masculinity of the toys, which are mostly “battle” themed, the feminine patterning is meant to be testaments to the domestic realm in which battles and wars were perceived as something fun and easily put away, rather than the horrible reality they actually are. The juxtaposition of these two themes adds an intended irony to the subject matter.

BLVD Gallery: "Wilderness and Wastelands"

“Wastelands and Wilderness” explores the worlds and
characters created by Parskid and Chip7. Two rising stars in the urban
contemporary art scene.
Parskid's work focuses on his interests in dark rituals, mythology,
sacrifice and spirituality in a world of lush forests and natural
surroundings. This is greatly influenced by the forests of the Pacific
Northwest where he works and lives. Parskid's painting style utilizes a
unique detailed way of painting only with spray paint by using various
techniques of masking, stencils and brushwork. His work has been
exhibited in many cities in the United States including LA and NYC and
abroad in Australia, Taiwan, Spain and the UK. His work has been
published in the following magazines: Hi-Frustose, King Brown,
Overspray, Art Prostitute, Cool'eh, Novum, Beautiful/Decay, Day in the
Lyfe, and Dirty Soup as well as published books, Dot Dot Dash, Canceled
Flight, War of Monstars, Pictoplasma 2 and Monstaah!. Parskid
characters are no strangers to the streets of Seattle and freight train
lines of the United States.
Chip7, also with a background in freight train art and graffiti
hails from the opposite side of the US. His work explores brightly
colored confessions of a clutter brain through science fiction
psychedelic fantasy. Chip7 was trying to paint pretty much everything
he could shake a stick at around industrial New Jersey, and where ever
the wind took him.Years of painting got him some wonderful memories and
adventures, people who hate him, like him, and his work in a few books.
Fun and some legal problems go hand and hand. His studio work deals
with a range of sources including memories and dreams. Subjects range
from both personal and historical using a range of materials including
found printed matter collage, animation cel paint, oils, and spray
paint. While his nickname remains there are no silver block letters
being painted on canvas, and he can no longer be found in the layup all
weekend. The ensemble cast that are scattered across the many
layers, and shapes of his work range from his own creations of eyeball
droids, and neon monsters to a few cameos by Asian heroes inspired by
his time living in South East Asia. The semi obsessive ''paranoid''
nature of his current work also deals with theories of global
commotion, and catastrophe of the past, present, and possible near
future in a somewhat playful manner.
The interactive nature of this joint effort with Parskid will include
the use of chromadepth glasses technology to increase the visual
experience of the viewer. Their two worlds collide, a technological
future and a natural primitive land that become a unified place never
before seen. With similar themes in their work but a different view of
each of their worlds these artists have come together to create a
unique experience for the viewer.

The Exile Project

Conceived by Holly Eckert in Seattle , and created in collaboration with writer L.A. Heberlein & myself.

On any day in America , over 2,000,000 of its citizens sit exiled in jails and prisons.

The Exile Project explores the alienation and desperation imposed on all of us who live with this system. This musical theater performance goes straight to the heart of Americans' failure to forgive - and the price of fear and separation we all pay. I've been collaborating on this project as composer for several years, and am happy with the sound track.

BRIDES OF MARCH 2008: PURITY PARTY

BRIDES OF MARCH 2008: PURITY PARTY
Saturday, March 15, 2008 at 7pm
12th Ave Laundry, 1807 12th Ave, Seattle, WA 98122

Girls, let's talk. I don't know about you, but after seven years of shotgun weddings and wrenching separations from betrotheds including the Hammering Man, the Space Needle, the monorail, (and let us not forget Satan), and on and on, we're feeling a little... how shall I say this delicately.. . unfresh. Let's be honest. The blush is off the rose, isn't it? We're just a spoiled peach. What once seemed so, so GLAmorous now just seems... taaawdry. Doesn't it darlings? We're old. Used. Diiirty. Why, we've shredded two dresses to filthy rags just dragging them along the grimy streets of the big city.

That's why it's time to refresh! Rejuvenate! And wash away those sinful stains, at the Brides of March 2008: Purity Party, which will conveniently kick off at Capitol Hill's 12th Avenue Laundry. Never content with a mere metaPHOoric washup, we're going to LITrally WASH. THOSE. STAINS.

All you need do is bring One Soiled Unmentionable. We'll toss them all together in one big washload and watch 'em spin while we sssip champagne. (And we do need a couple of dandy gents to pour for us, so boys, please check your closet for that tux!) While we're waiting, we'll discuss "the importance of saving ones virginity and practicing abstinence until marriage."

Once our drawers and souls are sparkly clean, we'll go marry that big butt plug in Cal Anderson Park, make a few stops at The Crypt and the Castle Superstore, and then find a nice gay bar to dance the night away!

Saturday, March 15, 7pm
12th Ave Laundry, 1807 12th Ave, Seattle, WA 98122
Be prompt: the wash-load goes in at 7:30
(But shhh... it's a secret from the laundromat!)

Sorry, no PV letter this week.

I just came back from India and am sick. I must have eaten something bad on my flight from Delhi to London. You might think that the business class of British Airways gets food that is not contaminated but I wouldn't assume that anymore.

Until next week then...
