Good Bye!

The time has come: This is the last Party Volcano email.
After over six years of writing this letter every week I have decided to close shop.

The first letter came out on 2/5/2006 and it has been fun writing about all the events and non-events for all those years. You can read a little summary in the 5 year birthday issue from 3/8/2007 if you want to refresh your memory.

Why is Party Volcano closing its doors?
The short answer is that my job has become increasingly demanding. I wish I had a job like Matt from Seattle:

Where the Hell is Matt? (2008)

http://www.wherethehellismatt.com

What started as a joke sent to a friend of his turned into an exciting job:
Traveling around the world and making silly dance movies for a chewing gum company.

Please keep in touch and continue sending me stuff.

I will keep this email account and might even post events on the Party Volcano blog.

Take care!

- Bernd

Oliver Herring | Task @ Seattle Public Central Library

Oliver Herring | Task

1o am to 5:30pm

Go after 4 pm so you can park without worrying about the parking meter running out.

On Saturday, June 28, the Frye, in collaboration with our partners the Seattle Public Library, On the Boards, and Tacoma Art Museum, will stage Oliver Herring’s performance Task. An improvisational event, Task brings together a group of thirty-five strangers of diverse ages, professions, and backgrounds to create an original site-specific artwork. The performance will take place over the course of the day at the Seattle Public Central Library in downtown Seattle. The audience for Task, if it is a usual summer day at the library, will be 7,000 people, making this performance as dynamic for the public as for the performers.

PUNCH presents Fragile Balance, an exhibition of new paintings and sculpture by Patricia Hagen. In this latest work, Hagen draws inspiration from looking at electron microscope photos of cells, bacteria, viruses, and other organisms. For Hagen, the jumble of forms represents the amalgam of life in its ever evolving set of systems, and the balance necessary to maintain those systems. Using watercolor and polymer clay, she examines the structure of these organisms, and considers their place in our lives.

Hagen received her MFA from California College of the Arts in 1994 and relocated to Seattle in 2001, where she has since shown at Bryan Ohno Gallery and SAM rental/sales gallery. Her work was featured in the 2007 Pacific Coast edition of New American Painting.

WORLD REFUGEE DAY CELEBRATION HIGHLIGHTS LOCAL REFUGEE ARTISTS

On Friday June 20th, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) Seattle will host the third
annual Refugee ArtVocacy in celebration of World Refugee Day. Many
refugees who arrive in the Puget Sound area have fled perilous and oppressive conditions in
their home countries. The IRC Seattle alone has resettled over 18,000
refugees since opening its offices in 1976 and currently resettles
450 people on average each year.

Refugee ArtVocacy will feature works by individuals from around the world
who are now living in the Puget Sound area, including special performances by the
Tibetan Dance Troupe, the Roosevelt Cambodian Dance Troupe, and Hosana Burundian Choir.

Also performing are two Sudanese hip hop acts: Jay One, solo rapper and an all-girl hip
hop band, entitled Black Hospitality. Visual artists with work on display will include
Saw Kennedy (Myanmar), Fasika Moges (Ethiopia), Lorenzo Jimenez (Guatemala),
Nha Vuu (Vietnam), Janet Saryadegar (Iran) and Igor Kashinskiy, Vitaly Saad,
Poul Costinsky and Petro Markovich (Russia).

Guests can anticipate a wide range of fine arts, traditional crafts, and modern artistic
expressions, reflecting the diversity and value of the cultural contributions that refugees
make in our communities. ArtVocacy takes place on June 20th from 7:00-9:30pm at the
Seattle Center House. Sponsors include ArtTech, 4Culture, Seattle Center
and the IRC.

MADE IN CHINA (Benefit for SICHUAN EARTHQUAKE RELIEF)

A BENEFIT FOR MERCY CORPS

AND SICHUAN EARTHQUAKE RELIEF
MADE IN CHINA
a film by John Helde

Friday, June 20
7:30 and 9:00pm

All proceeds will benefit Mercy Corps efforts in Sichuan Province, China, the site of the May 12 earthquake

In this personal documentary, John Helde uncovers his father's experience growing up an American boy in pre-World War II China and discovers a community of other Americans with similar childhoods. Inspired by an account of Tom Helde's birth at the remote Sichuan mountaintop of Bailuding, John sets out to understand how growing up in China made his father who he is. Weaving together stunning black and white period home movies, photos and interviews, the documentary ultimately takes the audience from modern Shanghai to industrial Changsha to rural Sichuan, a journey that becomes an exploration of the meaning of home and growing up. An audience and critical favorite, MADE IN CHINA premiered at the 2007 Seattle International Film Festival; other festival screenings include Austin Film Festival, Vancouver International Film Festival, and Big Muddy Film Festival.

The May 12 earthquake is one of the largest humanitarian disasters to hit China in the last 30 years. Nearly 70,000 people have died, and over five million are still homeless. "This has been a terrible tragedy for China, and aftershocks and the threat of flooding and disease still pose a huge danger," Helde said. "Having filmed in Chengdu and rural Sichuan, and with my family's past in that area, I feel a deep tie to Sichuan and I'm very pleased to be able to partner with Northwest Film Forum and Mercy Corps to raise funds to provide some further help to people who are now homeless and suffering as a result of this disaster."

Mercy Corps was one of the first relief organizations on the ground in Sichuan after the May 12 7.9 magnitude earthquake. The organization has procured critical supplies such as food, water, clothing and shelter supplies and delivered them to affected families. Mercy Corps is also launching an initiative to help children and youth recover from their trauma through mentoring, sports and other activities.

More information at nwfilmforum.org or 206-329-2629.
Suggested minimum donation of $10.

The Violet Hour @ Henry Art Museum

The Violet Hour

STROUM GALLERY
June 21 – October 12, 2008

The violet hour is dusk, a temporal bridge from the clarity of daylight to the obfuscation of night. Borrowing a phrase from T.S. Eliot’s The Waste Land for its title, this exhibition presents art about a twilight time that may be our immediate future. Artists Matthew Day Jackson, Jen Liu, and David Maljkovic imagine alternative realities that could emerge from the socio-political strife and environmental degradation now accumulating on the global stage. The Violet Hour features video, sculpture and two-dimensional works that address the physical and emotional weariness of our time in an attempt to overcome the cultural amnesia preventing us from learning the lessons of history.

Matthew Day Jackson debuts three new works, including a sculpture consisting of a crashed race car frame lit with low rider effects and an immense wood panel “painting” depicting the constellations of the night sky, made from the coin currencies of many nations. Jackson’s work explores events in American history and envisions a future of uprisings rectifying past injustices.

Jen Liu’s videos and large scale watercolor drawings feature the “Brethren of the Stone,” a back-to-nature cult that clashes with modern industrial society. Beyond the battle between nature and technology, her work underscores issues of state power and civil disobedience, modernity and nostalgia, and a comical take on science fiction and recent pop culture.

In his videos and collaged photographs, Croatian artist David Maljkovic depicts his generation as lost and listless souls unmoored from their own heritage by years of warfare. Maljkovic finds inspiration for his work in the nostalgic desire for the socialist system at a time when his country is entering the increasingly globalized European Union.

Exile in {Imaginary} Girlville

THREE IMAGINARY GIRLS TO HOST "EXILE IN {IMAGINARY} GIRLVILLE, AN EXILE IN GUYVILLE TRIBUTE NIGHT

Seattle, WA, May 21, 2008 - It's true that we stole your lighter. And it's also true that we lost the map. That's why Three Imaginary Girls will proudly present the songs of Liz Phair's triumphant debut record "Exile in Guyville" as interpreted by some of the best up-and- coming bands in the Northwest. The event is called "Exile in {Imaginary} Girlville" and is co- sponsored by Easy Street Records, Seattle Sound Magazine, and 90.3 KEXP.

Exile in {Imaginary} Girlville takes place on Wednesday night June 25, 2008 at Chop Suey and features Throw Me the Statue, Team Gina, Star Anna, Tennis Pro, Lucy Bland, M. Bison, Tea Cozies, as well as special performances by Rachel Flotard of Visqueen and Lesli Wood of Ms. Led. The bands will perform the songs on the record in order, from "6'1"" to "Strange Loop" and everything in-between.

The event marks the 15th anniversary of the release of "Exile in Guyville" and ATO Records' re-release of the album with additional demo tracks, as well as finally releasing a vinyl version of the record. Which is certainly cause for celebration.

Speaking of celebration, the night also commemorates the sixth anniversary of Three Imaginary Girls.

"'Exile in Guyville' was such a pivotal record for me that it seems fitting to revel the start of Three Imaginary Girls to that soundtrack as performed by our favorite local bands," said Dana Bos, co-founder of Three Imaginary Girls.

Three Imaginary Girls anticipates another year of incredible live music and record reviews, as well as some new exciting changes. The website has some new looks and colors coming very soon as well as other big fun updates planned for the coming year.

But for now, the excitement is focused on June 25.

"Sure, Liz Phair just announced that she'll be performing 'Exile in Guyville' on the same name, in New York" said Liz Riley, co-founder of Three Imaginary Girls. "But I'd rather hear Rachel Flotard sing "Fuck and Run" than Liz Phair herself.

Do you wonder just how wild that would be? Join Three Imaginary Girls on June 25 to find out.

Roq la Rue Gallery

Roq la Rue Gallery

presents:

Chris Reccardi
"Mono"
new paintings

and

Chris Crites
"The Gun Show"
new paintings

opens Friday June 13th 6-9pm
runs through July 5th
Both artists will be in attendance
music by DJ Vodka Twist

Roq La Rue is pleased to present two solo shows for the month of June, by Seattle painter Chris Crites, and Los Angeles based artist and animator Chris Reccardi.

Chris Reccardi is a very successful animator ,having worked closely on Ren and Stimpy, Powepuff Girls, Samurai Jack, Spongebob Squarepants, as well as films (Shrek 3 & 4, “Monsters vs. Aliens [2009]) Sony Pictures (“Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs” [2009]) and the soon-to-be released “Rob Zombie’s haunted world of ElSuperbeasto” and an original Pilot for Nickelodeon “The Modifyers”).

However, in the fine art world Reccardi is highly sought after for his playful mod retro-space age paintings. Lush with color and exquisite linework, his work harkens back to animation from the 50's and 60's, exuding a pop beatnik cool and original hipster sensibility. His mix of the space age idealogy of the 60's (also called psy-fi) mixed with campy spy imagery creates a world that is hauntingly familiar yet also very of the moment.
Reccardi’s latest solo exhibition “Mono” explores a fantastical future-retro world, it’s colorfully Mod inhabitants and their mysterious bond to a secret code ...

Chris Crites also paints in a vibrant color palette, with a more somber subject matter. The iconic image of the gun is the focus of his current show. Hie paintings are painted on paper bags and painted in such a way that no surface is ever painted over twice. Each color is laid down individually in sections, and each tiny detail is left empty until the proper color is ready to be applied. This incredibly labour intensive method creates a painting that looks much like a mass produced screenprint, yet is actually a one of a kind, highly detailed original.
Crites' decision to paint such a highly charged subject is addressed in his statement:

"All tools are extensions of the human body. Guns by definition are extensions of the fist. This defines guns as tools of power, force or violence. That being said, this body of work is neither anti-gun nor pro-gun but rather an examination of a tool that has been used in much conflict and controversy throughout the modern age of mankind.
Why are Americans in particular so obsessed with guns? Why are there so many firearms in the United States? They permeate our history as well as our entertainment. They are also a big business and seem to be practically everywhere. I have no answers for why this is, but recognize how powerful a symbol just the image of a gun can be.
For better or worse, guns are a part of our history, a history that fascinates me. This series allowed me a way to examine the innovation and design of these firearms and see them in a different way..."

BLVD Gallery is proud to present the work of Oakland based artist
Bigfoot.
Bigfoot is a Bay area Graffiti legend and has been a major influence in
the skateboard
industry for close to a decade. Originally from New Jersey ,young
Bigfoot fled to California to be closer to big trees . Disassociated
from art school and human society, in 1994 he started writing "Bigfoot"
in the streets of San Francisco with relentless fury .Working often
with house paint and wooden panels ,his work depicts the conflict
between the respect for nature held by the artist's cast of Bigfoot
characters and the destructive agenda of mankind. Despite his reclusive
nature, Bigfoot has managed to stay active in society ,designing
skateboard graphics and footwear ,showing in galleries in America and
Japan, and the release of his vinyl figure with Strangeco in 2004. His
eponymous character and his love of heavy metal play a major role in
his studio work as well as his highly recognized street art. Please
join us at his opening reception Friday June 13 to Meet the artist and
Ride the Lightning.

Ouch My Eye presents: Apocalypse Now

Ouch My Eye is pleased to present: Apocalypse Now – Real wrath of GOD type stuff!

Are we heading for a disaster of Biblical proportions?
Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies!
Rivers and seas boiling!
Forty years of darkness!
Earthquakes, volcanoes...
The dead rising from the grave!
Human sacrifice...
Cats and dogs living together...Mass hysteria!

With a seemingly dramatic increase in natural disasters, economic instability, sexually promiscous behavior, community violence, corporate domination and governmental control, maybe we are heading into the long prohesised apocalypse and if so, what would it look like?

We present the Apocalyptic Visions of 20 artists, including: Amy Reinecke, Molly Magai, Maya Jeffereis, Lucy Carpenter, Jackie Kingsbury, Greg Hartman, Emily Pothast, Donald Daedalus, Bryan Ward, Dipika Kohli, Jen Maier, Douglas Gast, Patrice Tullai, Stan Raucher, Michael McDevitt, Vicki Wilson, and Dan Peters

Proceeds from the June 15 performance will be donated to the Sounds Outside concert series presented in Cal Anderson Park by the Monktail Creative Music Concern.

about the performers

Word of pianist Stephen Fandrich, a passionate performer, interpreter, improviser and composer, has spread throughout classical and jazz circles in the Northwest, though his appearances have been scarce. Director of the Seattle Harmonic Voices, and a member of the Monktail Creative Music Concern, Fandrich will be playing the works of Chopin (Ballade no.2), Scriabin (Verse la Flamme), and Frank Zappa (Sleep Dirt), amid his own works.

For streaming video of Stephen Fandrich in concert please visit: http://vroomjournal.com/video/StephenFandrich.php
Classical guitarist Sean V. Owen, a student of Eliot Fisk, David Leisner, Michael Lewin and Steven Novacek, is an emerging northwest treasure. Owen will be featuring Vihuela music of the
Spanish Renaissance, Yuchoh (Sakura Variations), and the guitar etudes of local composer Mark Ostrowski.

Discourse on Courses

Natalie Schmidt Dotzauer

June 5 – 29, 2008
Opening Reception: Thursday, June 5, 2008, 5-8 pm

Artist will be in attendance the first and final Saturdays of the month.

Jell-O molds, meatloaf, and twice-baked potatoes are a few of the basic potluck food groups that adorn Natalie Schmidt Dotzauer’s wallpaper installation this month at Punch. For Schmidt Dotzauer, these iconic and savory food staples reveal a rich and layered symbolism, interpreting the potluck as abundance, as waste, as excess in a world with hunger, but also as culture and community. She looks at how food and service create power struggles, develop guilt, and form an unhealthy habit of gaining purpose through food preparation.

“I learned to set the table before I could ride a bike. I learned that the knife blade should always point toward the plate, that the napkin should be folded so as to open in one shake, and dessert would follow each meal. I ate hamburgers in the summer; strawberries in June; deviled eggs around Easter with hot crossed buns; and in December, indulged on morsels reserved for ushering in the Holidays. Growing up with a “fellowship hour” meant eating out of duty, a styrofoam cup between you and uncomfortable silence. It seems we eat for a variety of reasons including acceptance. Food has been the timekeeper and the taskmaster; its role in life has preserved and dictated a certain socialness. I am drawn towards the roll of hostess and repelled by its serving nature. If there is a twelve-step program to shake sacrifice through service I should probably be in it.”

–– N. Schmidt Dotzauer

SHAG @ Fantagraphics Bookstore & Galler
y

We’d like to invite you all to join us at Fantagraphics Bookstore &
Gallery this Saturday, May 24 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM for an
extraordinary event featuring sensational Southern California artist
SHAG. He’ll be here to sign copies of his new Fantagraphics title
SHAG: A TO Z and present new works related to the book.

For the uninitiated, SHAG’s seductive renderings focusing on
anachronistic Americana are at once fresh and familiar. Tikis,
cocktails, Shriners, mini-skirts, and mid-century mod motifs define
SHAG’s singular aesthetic. His new book celebrates the pleasures of a
hedonistic lifestyle and the virtues of overindulgence. His drawings
and prints for the show here are wickedly affordable. SHAG’s previous
exhibitions at Roq la Rue in Seattle invariably sell out in advance.
The artist has agreed to allow local patrons the first opportunity to
add these exquisite pieces to their collections, so you won’t want to
miss this one!

DJ David James will spin the platters and liquid refreshments will be
provided. Admission is free, natch. Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery
is located at 1201 S. Vale Street in the charming artists’ enclave of
Georgetown, only minutes south of downtown Seattle. Phone:
206.658.0110. Open daily 11:30 to 8:00 PM, Sundays until 5:00 PM. And
we’ll be here on Memorial Day, May 26 until 5:00 PM. See you all this
weekend.

Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery, 1201 S. Vale Street.

h'Art Opening

I have been encouraged to invite you to a special gathering this weekend. I will be playing a set of new downtempo gems on the Mackie Fusion soundsystem starting just after midnight. Please come early and enjoy the art and sounds...

Below is message from the host:

I'd like to invite you to the third "h'Art Opening" this coming Saturday (May 24) at the Transcendent Church of Bass. We’ve been working hard on transforming a warehouse into the Transcendent Church of Bass and things are really going well…. and really busy.

Transcendent Church of Bass - 940 Elliott Ave W, Seattle WA 98119

“h’Art Opening” is a monthly gathering that consists of an early-evening art opening featuring artists from our community, flowing into a nice event with a house-party feel. Our vision is to create sacred space for people to gather; space that promotes heart opening through music art décor, lighting, and great company. The space will have a loungy feminine feel that is soft, sensual, and dreamy, an invitation to the feminine side of the dance/art scene.

Doors open at 7:20pm
We’re asking people to come early – everyone showing up before 9pm will pay a reduced entry of $5. After 9pm there will be a $10 entry. We plan to have a cash bar serving beer and wine, and all money raised at this month’s event would go towards insurance – a very important aspect of holding space for safe and sustainable events.

I’m also really excited to let you know that Louisa ’s innovative “Sonosphere” (http://www.thesonosphere.com/) is going to be run during the event. Our goal is to offer some journeys during “h-Art Opening”. Michael Brinker is curating art for this month’s h’Art, and there will be opportunity to interact with artists, and also create your own art.

Our vision is to balance live performances and DJ sets, and overall the vibe is definitely more downtempo oriented. Make no mistake, there will be plenty of opportunity to shake your booty! Here’s a partial list of performers:

Henta and Marcel Marias (live), John Ames of EQlateral (live), Julian Klappenbach (DJ), Waater Mark, Osiris Indriya (DJ), DJ Manos (DJ), Skoi (DJ), T-prohet (DJ), and Hendrik.

Take Me With You @ Balagan Theatre

I'm stage managing this show and I didn't see an email come out yet, so just in case I still had time.. would you mind adding this one? If not, next weekend will do too.. it's running thru then the show after that is the following two weekends.

Thanks!

Seattle School's RECESSION!

Seattle School's
RECESSION!

Sasquatch Music Festival (Comedy Tent) in George, WA

WHEN!

WHO!
Liza Keckler (Yokokoka), Kathy Kim (Toyota), Korby Sears (Wasabi), Like Lin (Iaccoca)
SAY WHUH?!?

Gonnichiwa! In Chinese, the word for "chaos" is the same word for "bargains". So what does more US economic chaos mean...? You got it - lots more Chinese. And what better reflects impending Chinese hegemony than J-POP? Not only because the hallmark of a rising superpower is its reductive pop songs (how else to lull your fat populace to utter complacency), but also because Seattle School once again is completely clueless, but still too lazy to research beyond a quick YouTube search, and can't be bothered with details (J-POP, K-POP, A-ROD, AJAX, tomato, kalamata, same-same, whatever). Which can mean only one thing - a delightful, whirlwind revue! Seattle School presents RECESSION! \(^o^)/

LET'S GET SHOPPING!

RECESSION! is the J-POP band with a candy-coated mission to inspire America to pull itself out of the macroeconomic frownzies and back to super-sugoi, wallet-emptying optimism, using an injection of catchy teriyaki-saccharine song stylings crafts sofia coppola. The show also contains spectacular choreography and visual effects and starchy snacks. RECESSION! is like no other J-POP band you've ever seen. Partially because most groups are younger, prettier, and at least 50% more Asianer. But also because Seattle School (thinking that creating a band is analogous to getting toppings at Pinkberry) drowned everything with Anime flava. Then, scratching our chins, added sprinklings of instigating consumers into a buying frenzy towards complete economic recovery. Then added some John Baldessari, but then had second thoughts and asked the clerk to scrape off that Baldessari, but then he said it would still cost the same (dick).

IT"S RAINING STIMULUS CHECKS!

The show starts off kinda campy and ironic, then switches to self conscious sincerity, then does a complete 180 and points at you and blames you for the pregnancy, when really all you ever wanted was for her to be happy. Some may call it "comedy", but Sasquatch calls it "cala-medy". Either way, it's close to what Speed Racer shoulda/coulda been, but not nearly as good as the impossible entertainment juggernaut dubbed... Ryan Seacrest (I think I once saw the tiny and elusive Ellen Page peeking out from within the deep folds of his cavernous smile wrinkles). Come check out - RECESSION!

James at NW Folklife Festival

Hey Ladies and Gents!

I hope you are doing well!

Here's the deal, it's been five years since I made an appearance at NW folklife, and on Monday, May 26that 5:40pm I'll be there at the Alki Court stage doing a 30 minute set of Sarod & Beats. Come out and get a free sample of the latest sounds of the whetzel musical magic shop, I'm doing this one for the love and would love to see some familiar faces out there.

I'm playing at the Alki Court Stage, right after the "Unlikely Instruments Band Scramble," I believe there is also a beer garden near this stage for those who, like me, may be interested in such things . . .

Cheers!

James
