The parade's at noon, the pageant is at Gasworks Park at 4:00, and the Fremont Fair goes on all weekend.

Gallery Talk @ SOIL
With curator Ellen Ziegler and artists
Crud
{embodiment, pollution, infestation, decay, metamorphosis, and the transformations of time}
Artists:
Nola Avienne, Claire Putney, Timea Tihanyi, Ellen Ziegler, Susan Zoccola
Crud assembles work that reaches its formal and emotional power through an evocation of change, decay, infestation, pollution, metamorphosis and the transformations of time. It presents artists who go beyond the seductiveness of material or the mere manipulation of emotions to integrated and powerful work. Often that work references the body and its processes, as the body can be the source of our most intimate ambivalence.

From Yellowstone to Yukon @ Burke Museum

Michelle writes:
Burke Museum

The Burke seems to me to be one of the hidden treasures of Seattle (like the Frye). After next Saturday, it'll be host to two exhibits that are right up my alley. http://www.washington.edu/burkemuseum/

-Opening Sat, June 16th, From Yellowstone to Yukon is a glorious photography exhibition by Florian Schultz, who spent years wandering this huge wild corridor, capturing one of the largest wilderness areas left in North America. I have the book, and can't wait to see the actual prints! He's giving a talk in October; worth putting in your calendar. Though Dec 31st.

-In the Spirit of the Ancestors (through September 3rd) is an exhibition of gorgeous Contemporary Northwest Coast Native Art. It's a beautiful show, with prints, masks, robes, weaving and more. If you're wondering what my interest in NW Coast Native Art is, I've been helping out at the Shotridge Gallery for the past few months in Pioneer Square, with my friends Sue & Israel Shotridge, from Vashon. He's a top-notch Tlingit carver, and the gallery features his work (including a 10-foot totem pole!) along with a selection of work by other Native artists. http://www.shotridgegallery.com 314 Occidental Ave S.

Sunday 6/17

Write-O-Rama @ Richard Hugo House
Richard Hugo House Presents
Write-O-Rama –
June 17, 10 a.m.- 5 p.m.
The second time around…
Richard Hugo House is once again proud to present Write-O-Rama, on June 17 from
10 a.m.-5 p.m. This lively benefit for Hugo House is a full day of 50-minute writing workshops–more than 30 in all–along with prizes, food and drink, open mics and a party wrapping it all up. Everyone who wants to write is welcome to sample Hugo House classes, meet other writers and get ink on paper.

How does it work?
Participants are asked to raise at least $35 for Hugo House and are welcome to collect pledges from friends and family à la walk-a-thon (pledge sheets are available online). The doors open for registration at 9:30 a.m. but anyone can come for as little or as much of Write-O-Rama as they please. Participants will look at the schedule and choose which classes they want, then Hugo House staff members will start the “O-Rama” 5-10 minutes before each session–this is when participants dash madly to the class of their choice.
At the end of each 50-minute class, we “O-Rama” all over again and choose a new class.
Here's a sneak peak at a few of the workshops offered at Write-O-Rama:
Writing the Workplace with Rebecca Agiewich
We'll read great workplace scenes by other writers, then make our own characters commute to the office for some nasty–or funny, or sad–surprises.
Triolets are Red, Limericks are Blue with Steve Arnston

We'll take up two ingenious forms that teach something unique about meter and repetition. Triolets are for birthdays and valentines, and limericks are–well, usually they involve a man from Nantucket.
Shall I Compare Thee to an 800,000-Residents-Without-Power Windstorm? with Martha Silano
In this workshop we'll explore the concept of parody, looking at examples of original work and its imitation(s). Think "Ode on a Grecian Urn" and "Ode on a Bottle of Grecian Formula." After comparing, we'll compose our own.

Prizes will be awarded throughout the day, including free Hugo Writing Classes. The individual who raises the most pledges gets a free six-week class and the team that raises the most pledges wins free one-day classes for all.
At noon and at 5 p.m. we’ll turn the stage over to an open mic for students to read their new gems aloud. Participants can sooth sore fingers around cool drinks and fuel creativity with snacks throughout the day. At the end of it all the tired writers will raise a glass to their new writing with their new friends and wonder how long it will be before Write-O-Rama comes around the third time.
EVENT LISTING
Jun. 17 – Richard Hugo House’s 2nd Write-O-Rama! An eight-hour extravaganza of mini-writing workshops and big prizes topped off with an open mic and party. Raise (or bring) at least $35 for Hugo House and come ready to write. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. 1634 11th Ave. Pledge sheets, class schedule and other info at www.hugohouse.org

Don Volcano's Computer Corner

Three months ago new neighbors moved in next door. A bunch of young folks in their early twenties that party all the time. This might sounds weird: Me - the CEO of Party Volcano - complaining about partying? Yes, if you party next door on a Thursday at 1 AM in the morning.

My lovely girlfriend has sent friendly letters reminding them that it is not cool to party all every weekend until after 2 AM and especially not during the week. I told her that that was a waste of time. It's like the U.N. sending letters to Saddam Hussein: "We are sharply disagreeing with your recent invasion of Kuwait". If she is the U.N. I am the United States. I am sending armed forces.

In the good old days I would have taken pleasure in handling this case the German way. This is what you would do in Germany: you go to the local meet packing district in the morning and buy a goat head. As you might know burnt goat head is a West Indian delight.
Extreme Eating: Goat Heat
Get the one with the blue tongue hanging out the mouth, preferable sticking out to one side between the yellow teeth. It's only a dollar more with the tongue and will certainly increase the effect. Either way, you take your smelly goat head and nail it to your neighbor's door. In Germany if you find a smelly goat head nailed to your door it means: stop partying. If there is a blue tongue hanging out the goat's mouth it means: stop partying, I hate you.

But maybe all this might not be necessary. Maybe they will kill each other, or just drive each other crazy. I found this interesting site about horror stories involving housemates and roommates. There might be hope.
Who stole my milk?
http://whostolemymilk.com/
Well I'll let you know how our neighbors liked the goat head.

Don Volcano.
