"A Fine Line" @ Roq la Rue

Roq la Rue Gallery
Presents
“ A Fine Line ”

Xiaoqing Ding
Jason D’Aquino

Opens Friday August 10th 6-9pm
Runs through September 1st
emailus to be on the preview list!

Roq La Rue is pleased to present a show by two artists who explore
some of the darker aspects of human nature, such as sexuality and
fear. Both artists, although stylistically quite different, use a
combination of expert artistic draftsmanship mixed with audacious
subject matter.

Xiaoqing Ding hails from Beijing, China but currently lives in New
York. Having studied traditional Asian arts for over 8 years in
Beijing, her exposure to United States culture has allowed
Xiaoqing’s work to adopt a twist that melds classic Asian motifs
with an edgy undercurrent of sexuality, gluttony, and the melancholy
tug of war between the sexes. In her work, Xiaoqing often depicts
foxes (aka kitsune), which in her work symbolize the provocative
sexual female, and serves as a foil against repressed sexual desires
and sensuality. Peacocks also make an appearance as the vain male.
These characters swirl around and provoke the central human
characters into revealing their true, if not socially “correct”,
desires to each other. This particular series is rendered in both
lush, electrically vibrant pastels on paper, as well as delicate,
enigmatic silverpoint drawings.

Jason D’Aquino is also from New York. His graphite drawings bring
the term “meticulous” to new heights as his already small,
technically precise line work and shading is so thorough that he uses
a jeweler’s loupe to make the tiniest detail perfect. That
perfection plays off the humorously sinister and exuberantly
grotesque subject matter Jason uses, from Lovecraft-ain horrors and
serial killers, to warped pop culture iconography used as an
allegorical language about the current state our culture is in, as
well as the exploration of what drives humans to use horror as
entertainment. This series includes not only some of his well known
match book drawings, but also a new series based around a found
vintage Vargas pin up calendar, to which Jason has added ghostly
images exploring the theme of dark lust and the primal energy of
sexuality.

The Beat of Urban Art @ BLVD Gallery

BLVD Gallery presents
Justin BUA
The Beat of Urban Art
August 10 – September , 2007
Artist Reception and Book signing Friday August 10 6pm - 10pm

BLVD Gallery is proud to present one of the most widely recognized
and respected artists to document and participate in the Hip Hop
movement, Justin BUA. BUA’s art is infused with his experiences being a
B-Boy and graffiti Writer in NYC during the birth of a culture. Through
the distinct style that he calls “Distorted Urban Realism” melding
urban rhythms, graffiti, and classical art training BUA represents the
lives of both the revered and the marginalized, the heroes and the
underdogs of his time—New York City during the 1970s and ’80s.

Groundbreaking artist Justin BUA is internationally known for his
best-selling collection of fine art posters--The DJ being one of the
most popular prints of all time. Born in 1968 in NYC’s untamed Upper
West Side and raised between Manhattan and East Flatbush, Brooklyn, BUA
was fascinated by the raw, visceral street life of the city. He
attended the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music and Performing
Arts and complemented his education on the streets by writing graffiti
and performing worldwide with breakdancing crews. BUA went on to the
Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California where he earned a
B.F.A in Illustration. Currently, he teaches figure drawing at the
University of Southern California, while continuing to be a leading
innovator in both the fine and commercial art worlds. . BUA’s
energetic and vocal worldwide fan base ranges from former presidents,
actors, musicians, professional athletes, and dancers, to street kids
and art connoisseurs.

From the birth of Hip-Hop, emcees, and graffiti artists; to
deejays, street poets and ball players, BUA’s THE BEAT OF URBAN ART
(HarperCollins Publishers, hardcover on sale March 13, 2007) takes
readers into a masterfully illustrated New York City of the 1970s and
1980s as experienced by the artist’s heroes and the underdogs of that
era. Accompanied by sketches, studies, and explanations of how his
most famous paintings were created, this extraordinary oeuvre documents
the artist’s turbulent youth in the underground worlds of the urban
jungle to showcase landmark moments in the nation’s cultural history.

Kentree Speirs @ Retail Therapy

August 14th 6-9pm
For the August 14th Art Show Retail Therapy is proud to present the work of Portland artist
Kentree Speirs

"My paintings are autobiographical reflections stemming from notions I have about living. I am
interested in the nature of human perception and the fusion of intuition and visual literacy.
The ritual of creating art allows access to new perception and thereby enables distancing from
concepts that may limit a painting. These ideas are assessed and proven either worthy or unworthy
of art.

I pursue a dialogue between the initial idea, the intuitive, and the sensual and physical
experience of handling paint. Each painting combines intention, discipline, instinct, emotion,
erudition, failure, risk, and discovery. I enjoy creating a sense of tension, responding to the
wonder of painting, or working to narrate a feeling."

To see more images here is Kentree's website.

Please join us for his show openign on August 14th from 6-9pm and meet the artist.

Prrr a go go

After three years at its present location it is time for Prrr to reinvent itself.

This coming event will be the last for Prrr in its current incarnation. If you were eying a piece in the past now is the time to buy it. I need to clear out so items will be marked to move, so I don't have to 'move' them myself.

Expect the same celebratory atmosphere as in the past with snacks beverages and supple conversation.

Also as a special treat you will be able to get a peak at JessThorsen's new work before she hangs her next show, "Ladies of the Sea". For a taste of the works she will be showing please click the following links for "Gail" and "Lenora" (close up)
