Events from 11/28/2007 to 1/3/2008

I just came back from Jackson but I am surprised to find only a few events for this week. There is of course New Year's Eve 2007 on Monday but other than that it seems pretty quiet. If you are looking for more NYE parties other than the ones that are listed here please have a look at The Stranger's Sayonara 2007 list at: http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/Content?oid=465967

My favorite NYE's party is SCIENCE FRICTION NYE BASH @ YOUNGSTOWN CULTURAL ARTS CENTER.

BrickHouse @ Koi in Bellevue.

John writes:

Hi everyone:

BrickHouse will be playing a New Year's Eve show at the Koi restaurant in Bellevue.
Brickhouse is a great party/dance band that does a lot of "funk".
Heather Ward Richter is one of the front glitter girls, and that girl can SING.

NYE @ The Little Red Studio

John writes:

And, of course, I'll be at the festive NYE event at The Little Red Studio at 750 Harrison.
The Nasty Habits are the featured live music, but there will also be many other kinds of performances there over the course of the evening, and it will definitely be a party. I've heard that advance ticket sales (www.littleredstudioseattle.com) are going VERY well, so it ought to be PACKED with fun celebratory people, and I've heard a rumor that the food provided will be the kind that will make anyone extatic.

My Phone Tells Me to Do Bad Things

My Phone Tells Me to Do Bad Things
Ries Niemi

January 3 - February 3, 2008
Opening Reception: Thursday, Jan 3, 2008, 5-8 pm

Using his ironic brand of dark humor, Ries Niemi presents a vision of cell phones as a life form, manipulating humanity for their own purposes. Niemi claims to have purchased, sight unseen, this collection of objects from a mini-storage auction. Vamping on the familiar themes of conspiracy theory and paranoia, Niemi examines just how exactly that cell phone got into his pocket, and who is really in charge.

Inspired by the Classics (in this case an equal measure of Andy Warhol and the Beastie Boys) Niemi cuts and pastes pop culture in a variety of mediums, including: digital imaging, embroidery, wood, paper, textiles and metal. In his installation, pages from old books, fossils, textiles, metallic objects, even furniture and clothing document the surprising centuries long attempts by cell phones to take over the world.

Ries loves his phone. Ries hates his phone.

Working in a broad range of media, Niemi has shown widely around the country, and works extensively in public art, including a new piece on Pine Street adjacent to the Paramount Theatre, "Eat, Drink, and Be Merry.”

Fire Retard Ants Presents: WE 8 OURSELVES @ SOIL

January 3–27, 2008 at SOIL
Fire Retard Ants Presents: WE 8 OURSELVES (for your Urgent Need)

Fred Muram and Mike Simi

We 8 Ourselves (for your Urgent Need) presents a new collaborative collection of sculptures, photographs and videos by Fire Retard Ants which consider the awkward territory of adolescence and its nostalgic persistence as a vehicle for creativity. Fire Retard Ants culminated out of the awkwardness that both artists experienced during their respective childhoods; one the perpetual daydreamer and the other with the persistent need to conform to the norm.

This exhibition is about growing pubic hair, fighting ninja's and eating Cheez Whiz, all while maintaining a C+ average. The memory of early social interactions and how they manifest in the adult lives of these two artists is an integral part of this show. Think robotic tennis shoes, mock quests under couches and how irritating it must be to have your face repeatedly poked with a stick.

When a person grows into an adult who are they supposed to be, and is any stasis attained as an adult just a fleeting sentiment? Is pissing your pants as a kid the same as losing your job as an adult? Fred Roger's from Mr. Roger's neighborhood said that each and every one of us is special just the way we are, no matter what. Fire Retard Ants sets out to prove it to themselves.
