Norwescon 31 (Thu-Sun)

John writes:

THURSDAY, FRIDAY, SATURDAY, SUNDAY NORWESCON!!!

This is the event you have been waiting for. And, YES, the Klingon Drinking team WILL be there.

Below is a blurb from thier website, but it's pretty stoic. Think about 3000 people dressed as fairies, dragons, warriors, imperial storm troopers, your favorite smoking hot anime character, or just as a scantily clad alien female... All wandering the halls of this hotel in the party wing drinking heavily. There are loads of other activities there, so please just visit thier website at www.norwescon.org.

So, here is the blurb.
Norwescon is one of the largest regional Science Fiction conventions in the United States. While maintaining a primarily literary focus, Norwescon is large enough to provide a venue for many of the other aspects of Science Fiction and the interests of its fans such as anime, costuming, art, and much, much more.

Norwescon is the host convention for the prestigious Philip K. Dick Award, given to a distinguished original science fiction paperback published for the first time during the award year in the U.S.A.

Finally Norwescon is a lot of fun.

Samantha Power @ Town Hall

Andrew Havlis writes:

I first became aware of Samantha Power through an outstanding article she wrote for The Atlantic Monthly several years ago on the Rwanda genocide. Power did a lot of original research on the Clinton administration's response to that horror, namely that administration's efforts to prevent the UN from stopping the genocide. I quote Power:

[The U.S.] led a successful effort to remove most of the UN peacekeepers who were already in Rwanda. It aggressively worked to block the subsequent authorization of UN reinforcements. It refused to use its technology to jam radio broadcasts that were a crucial instrument in the coordination and perpetuation of the genocide. And even as, on average, 8,000 Rwandans were being butchered each day, U.S. officials shunned the term "genocide," for fear of being obliged to act.

It is mind-boggling, the moral perfidy of Clinton and his underlings, including the bright but disingenuous Madeline Albright who was then Clinton's ambassador to the UN and later his Secretary of State.

I mention this because I saw Albright speak a couple of months ago at Town Hall -- ironically enough, the location where Power will be speaking tomorrow. Albright is no doubt very smart and no doubt very politically savvy. She has done some good: during her speech she bragged that mothers in Kosovo name their daughters "Madeline" in honor of her. Most of the adoring audience ate it up.

I found it both fascinating and deeply disturbing the doublethink involved, both on the part of the many audience members who seemed to believe Albright a great champion of humanity and on the part of Albright, herself, who cast herself at every turn, in that light. I think of the survivors in Rwanda who most definitely are not naming their daughters "Madeline." It wasn't just a matter of no response on the part of Albright and Clinton to the genocide. It was as matter of actively working against the UN from stopping the genocide out of political inconvenience.

After hearing Albright trumpet her good name, I left the lecture enraged; the moral duplicity on Albright's part was breathtaking; the willful ignorance on the part of a sycophantic audience -- doubtless, good-hearted liberals who value human rights -- was heartbreaking.

Writers like Power are a bitter tonic, exactingly showing us the horrifying nature of modern politics.

Samantha Power talks about her new book, Chasing the Flame.

Rat City Rollergirls

Season Opener: Monsters and Mayhem

Season 4 Bout 1 PosterPresented by NWsource.com, this monster-themed first bout is sure to be a nail-biter, with the first match-up between the Sockit Wenches and the Throttle Rockets -- both teams have alumni skaters returning for duty (welcome back Holley Knock-hers, Dixie Dragstrip, Sassy Chassis, and Darth Skater!) and fresh meat just waiting to knock their very first jammer into the audience. Throttle Rockets are determined to prove they aren't a last-place team and the Sockit Wenches are on the look-out for their next championship trophy (gotta start early), so brutally snatched from their grasp last season.

Next up, Grave Danger is coming off of a triumphant win in 2007 (season champions!) but Derby Liberation Front is still the team to beat. Did you know that Grave Danger is the only team that has never beaten DLF? Come see if Grave Danger can topple the mighty wall of DLF and cement their place at the top of the dog-pile. Word on the street is that they trained all through the off-season in preparation for this game; will DLF be able to keep up with Femme Fatale's speed and withstand Skate Trooper's wicked blocks?

A portion of the proceeds will benefit our featured charity, the Pike Place Market Foundation. Tickets are sold OUT online, but if you were among the lucky few to get 'em in time, we'll see you there!

Open Weekends 12-5 and by appointment
Crawl Space is pleased to present recent works by member artist Tim Brown, featuring a life-scale domestic interior drawn in string and a dining set suspended in resin. Sourced in both his childhood home and his current one, Brown's architectural pieces portray the hearth and home as primary containers for the intangible.
"The spaces I inhabit have always been based on the shape of the rectangular prism, the box. These boxes have served as the container, context, and framework for my experiences, thoughts, desires, and my everyday life. Place/Setting has come to be about filial intimacy and friendship, about the nature of this presence that inhabits the space in between people."

Brass Menazeri & Pangeo at The Tractor Tavern.

James writes:

This is a great show that is going to be happening in Seattle on Tuesday, March 25th. Two wonderful groups, Brass Menazeri and Pangeo, are going to be doing a show together at the Tractor Tavern in Ballard. I am not actually playing anything at this show but it's going to be a great show so I thought I should let people know about it.

Starting off the night is Pangeo, a group that features Greek folk musicians Christos Govetas and Ruth Hunter. Pangeo specializes in traditional dance music of Greece and the Balkans. They are "equally at home playing ballads from the mountains of Epiros in Greece or lively tunes from the Bulgarian and Albanian border areas." They will rock you with clarinet, zurna, accordian, guitar, and percussion, perhaps even some oud.

http://www.kyklosmusic.com/PANGEO/Pangeomain.html

And if seeing Pangeo live wasn't already good enough, which it is, coming up from the Bay Area for the second half of the night is Balkan Gypsy Brass Band Brass Menazeri. If you have yet to heard Gypsy Brass Band music music, clearly you should seize this opportunity. The group will "cascade through the music of the Serbian, Macedonian, Greek & Rajasthani Roma with wild rhythms, soulful vocals & hot improvisations." Da! They will seize you and shake you around, and perhaps induce you into a manic dancing frenzy.

Drew Friedman Show @ Fantagraphics

“THE FUN NEVER STOPS!” WITH DREW FRIEDMAN:
FANTAGRAPHICS BOOKSTORE & GALLERY IN SEATTLE, OPENING MARCH 27.

“Drew Friedman isn't just a brilliant artist. He takes you to a
place. He takes you back in time. He makes you smell the stale
cigarettes and cold brisket and you say thank you for the pleasure.”
— Sarah Silverman

Drew Friedman is among the most notorious illustrators and
cartoonists in America. According to Entertainment Weekly, “He holds
a marvelously warped lens up to crusty politicians and debauched
celebrities. A good-natured misanthrope with an obsessive style and a
sardonic tongue, Drew Friedman is one of the country’s sharper
political artists.” Freidman will appear in Seattle for the first
time at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery for a book signing and
exhibition of his original artwork on Thursday, March 27 from 5:00 to
8:00 PM.

“The Fun Never Stops!” exhibition features 17 portraits meticulously
rendered in Friedman’s singular style. Included are political figures
such as “McCain as Popeye,” “John Kerry’s Inauguration,” and “Really
Rich Rudy” as well as pop culture icons like Frank Sinatra, Woody
Allen, and Alfred E. Newman. In addition, Fantagraphics Books
produced a limited edition silkscreen print featuring George W. Bush
as Slim Pickens in the apocalyptic finale to “Dr. Strangelove.”
Friedman’s portraits are alternately savage satires or reverential
renderings – and frequently both, as in his series of “Old Jewish
Comedians,” recently published in two volumes by Fantagraphics Books.

Friedman’s illustrious career has included comics work published in
Art Spiegelman’s RAW, R. Crumb’s Weirdo and MAD Magazine, and
frequent illustrations in National Lampoon, The New York Times, The
New York Observer, among countless other publications. He was the
recipient of the 2001 Rueben Award for newspaper illustration.
Friedman’s work has been collected by Seattle’s Fantagraphics Books
in The Fun Never Stops!: An Anthology of Comic Art 1991 – 2006, Old
Jewish Comedians, MORE Old Jewish Comedians, and Warts and All.

“The Fun Never Stops!” begins with a reception for the artist on
Thursday, March 27 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. Admission is free to the
public of all ages. The exhibition continues though May 6, 2008.
Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is located at 1201 S. Vale Street
(at the corner of Airport Way S.) in Seattle’s historic Georgetown
industrial arts district. Open daily 11:30 until 8:00 PM, Sundays
until 5:00 PM. Phone: 206.658.0110. A selection of images in a
variety of formats is available for publication. For additional
