SLIDELUCK POTSHOW XI in NYC

A gentle reminder that Slideluck Potshow XI is taking place this Saturday, March 29th, at the Chelsea Art Museum in Manhattan! Our eleventh slideshow potluck in New York will be celebrated in conjunction with The Armory Show, The International Fair of New Art.

Please note that the event begins at 8pm rather than 7pm and we recommend arriving around that time to ensure entrance!

There will be two lines at the door: one will be for members and Armory Show VIP pass holders and one for those who are signing up to become members. We will only be accepting cash or personal checks at the door, so please be prepared. All guests must become members (or make a $25 donation) as well.

This show will boast some new features and surpises! As well, we have as fantastic a slideshow as ever-- stay tuned for a list of contributors.

Please bear in mind that this is a participation-based event! It wouldn't be Slideluck Potshow without your mouth-watering couscous, your arepas de queso, your sweet potato salad, or your lemon meringue pie! And if you aren't able to cook, please pick something up on the way.

Kindly bring something nice to drink as well! We are avoiding red wine for the most part at this event, so a bottle of white, spirits, bubbly, or beer is preferable. We will have plenty of mixers and bars on all three floors.

Be prepared for a unique and exciting evening! Look sharp and bring a smile.

Until then,

Casey

PUNCH presents the work of Justin Gibbens and Amy Ross. Referencing early wildlife and botanical illustration, both artists demonstrate their own distinctive versions of a subversive natural history.

As a contemporary (wildlife) artist, Gibbens draws upon his obsessive, perhaps unhealthy interest in all things that scamper and poke about in the thickets and undergrowth. Influenced by a recent trip to Bavaria and chance encounters with vintage taxidermy while there, Gibbens sheds light on jackalopes, wolpertingers and other legendary beasts.

Amy Ross is interested in the idea of artist as mad scientist. Her drawings and collages offer visual hypotheses to the question: what would happen if the DNA sequences of humans, animals, plants, and mushrooms were spliced with each other? These hybrids become her interpretation of a perverse natural world wrought by genetic engineering and mutation gone awry.

Boston-based artist Amy Ross attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and also holds degrees in religious studies from Connecticut College and Harvard Divinity School. She has had solo exhibitions at Jen Bekman Gallery in NYC, Allston Skirt Gallery in Boston, Overtones in Los Angeles, Romo Gallery in Atlanta, and Motel in Portland. Her work has been reviewed in the New York Times, the Boston Globe, the Washington Post, and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Justin Gibbens lives in Thorp, Washington. He is a founding member of PUNCH gallery. He has shown nationally and internationally, and concurrently is showing at G.Gibson Gallery in Seattle with artist Nealy Blau. Gibbens was the recipient of an Artist Trust GAP Award in 2007 and a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Award in 2006.

Soapland @ SOIL

April 3rd - 27th, 2008 at Soil

Soapland
Issei Watanabe

A large castle suspended in an uncanny sort of innocence represents only the very surface of Soapland. The castle is composed of individual cast-ceramic bricks shaped as bars of soap, which then go on to rest upon various materials of an artificial nature. This exhibit compares the differences between how things appear at a surface level and the realities which often lie beneath.

As a child growing up in Japan, the artist had become quite fascinated with the notion of Soapland, a term he often heard adults mention. Of course Soapland brings to mind a place of cleanliness and fairy-tale innocence. This sculptural piece explores the disconnect of a child's understanding with the adult reality. In this case the reality was ironically opposed to the assumptions of the child; in Japan Soapland refers to a red-light district.

Soapland is considered to be a place of degradation, but the word itself is ambiguous and suggests something quite the opposite. This work capitalizes on this discrepancy in language: a proud fortress built on dissemblance and lost innocence. Soapland acts as part of the artists ongoing exploration of the differences in culture, language, routine, and behavior between Japan and the United States.

In the backspace gallery Jana Brevick presents Thanks, Wavelength, a tribute to radio waves incorporating the intimate atmosphere of the backspace with precious materials to elevate this everyday physical phenomenon.

Queen Shmooquan final episode

This is your last chance to witness the full Queen Shmooquan hour long
experience! Please forward invite to everyone you love- death is just
a knock away, can you imagine dying without witnessing the Queen?

THE QUEEN SHMOOQUAN… "say my name" SHOW!
Final Episode of the Season: Psychic Surgery
April 3, 4, 5 8:00pm, $10 tickets @door
Jewel Box Theatre, Rendezvous, 2320 2nd ave

The Queen Shmooquan…"say my name " Show is a solo, absurdist
theatre/music/performance art show, featuring Queen Shmooquan in all
her rubber chicken lovin', transcendental glory.

Final Episode: Psychic Surgery
Queen Shmooquan will dance, sing and eat her way through a super-real
journey in which she tests the outer limits of her skills as a healer,
auditions for the lead role in a big Broadway musical and makes the
final leap from
super-human to super-being!

Queen Shmooquan will also be performing a a short piece from her
repertoire at the Moisture Fest Sat. March 29, Hales Brewery, 10:30.

Who is Queen Shmooquan? Queen Shmooquan is a modern day oracle… a
transcendental burlesque clown. Jeppa K Hall is Queen Shmooquan (shmoo
like "shmooze" and quan like "kwan"). Jeppa, as Queen Shmooquan, works
in the tradition of pop art clowning, influenced by artists such as
Charlie Chaplin and Pee Wee Herman. However, in the presentation of
her unusual, yet timely stories and bizarre images, the Queen creates
a new performative mythology. She transcends her Walmart purgatory,
intermarries familiar imagery of the shared collective americana
consciousness with the unknown and the cosmic, to create smart,
hilarious, beautiful, and surreal landscapes.
