Haute Trash Fashion at New York Fashion Academy in Ballard

When: Friday, April 18th, 7 to 10 PM
Where: New York Fashion Academy
5201 Ballard Ave.
Seattle

Why: The event is dedicated to the recent passage of the Zero Waste Resolution Number: 30990. Zero Waste principles entail managing resources instead of waste; conserving natural resources through waste prevention and recycling; turning discarded resources into jobs and new products instead of trash; promoting products and materials that are durable and recyclable; and discouraging products and materials that can only become trash after their use.

What: This year marks the 6th somewhat semi-annual Art and Fashion exhibit for the ReStore in Seattle, and Haute Trash is proud to have been there for every one. What began in 2002 as a 3-day group showing of select art made from found objects, is now a month-long event that celebrates hundreds of fantastic artists, including infamous photographer Chris Jordan and that dumpster diving diva - Diane Kurzyna (Ruby Reusable). Last year's festivities kicked off with a fashion show that played to a packed warehouse of extremely enthusiastic fans who literally spilled out into the streets. (Click HERE to see photos from last year's show.) This year, both the art and fashion shows will be held at the spacious New York Fashion Academy. Rayona will be on hand to emcee. Featured will be fashions from designers up and down the west coast. Hey, and don't forget to drop in at the ReStore showroom at 1440 N.W. 52nd St. to pick up a Haute Trash collectable postcard!!

Slideluck Potshow inSeattle

Greetings Once More!

Last weekend, Howard Silver's piece on Slideluck Potshow aired on Bloomberg TV's Muse in over seventy countries. The story is the best we've seen-- well-produced, succinct, and accurate. It also features many of the guests and credits many of the artists.

Artists featured: Jill Greenberg, Edward Burtynsky, Ursula Gullow, Will Anderson, Cara Phillips, Saviero Truglia, Dawn Roscoe, J.G. Zimmerman, Martin Waugh, Sarah Small, Michael Muller

Guests featured: Carolin Wagner, Tony Gale, Daniel Traub, Julia Graham, Rosie Colman, Tia Dunn, Ava Rollins, John Mazlish, Holly Scull, John Duer, Jiang Chen, Jennie Tranter, Rachel Sontag, Jesse Untracht-Oakner, Rebecca Crumley, Mikey Toledano, Tara Zapp and many, many others we couldn't ID

Where can one see such a compelling piece of video? For this and much more, we invite you to join us on our new website: The SLIDELUCK POTSHOW Network.

The fact is, this network already exists, we are simply making it more tangible and accessible for everyone. The idea behind this platform is to give people a chance to communicate beyond the frenetic pace of the event itself.

We have started creating groups for each city. We hope this will allow for better communication leading up to and following each show as well as allowing for greater interaction between cities. We encourage you to have fun with it: share your recipes, post pictures, give each other feedback, reconnect with people, check out what's going on in other communities. Keep in mind that we have a number of other shows coming up! More information can be found on the network:

April 22: SLPS Rome
April 24: SLPS Barcelona II

Cause for Drinks (6-8pm) and Byron Carr Dance Performance (8-9pm)

Two dollars from every drink sold between 6-8pm benefits Urban Rest Stop during the Cause for Drink's Happy Hour.
Bryon Carr is a multi-media dance artist from New York City who expresses the human condition through body language, sound, light and color. In his performance at McLeod Residence, he will blend balletic, mechanical and disjointed progressions that occasionally incorporate pedestrian and vocal elements. His works invoke a science-fiction aesthetic while taking a tongue-and-cheek view at social issues.

“Cheap Wine and Poetry” @ Richard Hugo House

"Cheap Wine and Poetry" Celebrates National Poetry Month

Seattle Poet Populist Cody Walker joins Roberto Ascalon, Elizabeth Austen,
and Rebecca Loudon at a special poetry-only “Cheap Wine and Poetry”

April 24, 7:00 p.m. at Richard Hugo House

SEATTLE, WA — Seattle Poet Populist Cody Walker will read at a special
“Cheap Wine and Poetry" celebrating National Poetry Month on Thursday,
April 24, 2008, 7 p.m. at Richard Hugo House. Joining Cody are poets
Roberto Ascalon, Elizabeth Austen and Rebecca Loudon. Charla Grenz hosts;
wine is $1 per glass, and attendees are invited to dress up as their
favorite writers. Prize awarded for best costume.

"With the Seattle Poetry Festival gone, I’m glad ‘Cheap Wine and Poetry’
can step in and offer an all-star line-up of Seattle’s finest poets," said
Brian McGuigan, co-founder and curator of "Cheap Wine and Poetry." "Over
three years, we have never done a show in April; it’s been a celebration
in the making— we’ll have extra wine."

This installment of “Cheap Wine and Poetry,” celebrating National Poetry
Month, marks two firsts for the series— the first ever reading in April
and the first ever poetry-only “Cheap Wine and Poetry.” Often, prose
writers, monologists, and performers are featured as well as poets. As
part of the National Poetry Month celebration, attendees are invited to
dress up as their favorite writers. Prize awarded for best costume.

With standing-room only crowds at every show, “Cheap Wine and Poetry,”
Seattle’s coolest reading series, occurs semi-regularly at Richard Hugo
House, a co-sponsor of the series, and occasionally at other venues
throughout Seattle and elsewhere. The series began in 2005 when a few
poetry and wine lovers, wearied by the pretentious, expensive, and often
dull readings in Seattle, decided to start something fun that everyone
could enjoy— whether you’ve been reading Whitman for years or don’t know
Ai from Yeats.

Admission is FREE. Wine is served for $1 per glass. Though admission is
free, donations are encouraged to help keep the wine cheap and the poetry
free. Open mic sign-up is at the door.

Tickets available at the Henry admissions desk April 17. Seating is limited. First come, first served.

During the height of the Civil Rights Movement, photographer Stephen Shames had unprecedented access to the Black Panther Party and captured not only its public face, but also unscripted, behind-the-scenes moments. Shames's work offers an uncommonly nuanced portrait of this dynamic social movement. An exhibit of these images is on view at Odegaard Library to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the student takeover of the administration building at the University of Washington.
