Sound Speed Scooters is proud to present a month-long exhibition of the art of Joel Romeo. Joel’s impaired hearing and inability to communicate verbally, has given him a unique take on the world around him. His raw style and unpredictable narrative lend itself to a truly unusual art production. Wood Construction Center Saturday Market

Michelle writes:

There should be some really beautiful, handmade pieces at this event.

The next market is April 5th, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. It will feature fine woodworking (including furniture, jewelry boxes, toys, frames, turned wine stoppers, etc.), and probably some other fine crafts (last time we had a great selection of handmade pottery). Everything is made by students or alumni of the Wood Construction Center.

I have attached the flier for this market, as well as some pictures you may use.

The Wood Construction Center campus is located at 2310 South Lane Street, Seattle, WA 98144 (1 block south of 23rd and Jackson).

Thanks again for your support,

Moisture Festival

John writes:

MOISTURE FESTIVAL
For those that haven't heard... The Moisture Festival is going on right now.
They call it Comedy/Varietè:

Comedy/Varietè is an intriguing assortment of entertainment. It is highly skilled performance mixed with many bizarre talents, often humorous, with no limit to
the imagination. Presented as a variety show, each act or artist performs his or
her routine within a 3-15 minute time slot while being accompanied by a live
show band. Aerialists, jugglers, comedians, dancers, rope acts, bubble acts, clowns, acrobats, can can girls, strong women, strong men, tap dancers, drill teams, musical numbers, the weird and the wonderful- all keeping the tradition
of Comedy/Varietè/Vaudeville alive.

(Basically, it's old time vaudville brought to life for you at Hales Brewery between Freemont and Ballard. Good fun for everyone.)

AerLift III

Hi! We are a blossoming group of aerialists in Seattle, dedicated to helping those in need. We're doing a big, all-aerial show on April 9th. Please read our press release below. Thank you for your attention. If you are interested in more information or in visiting a rehearsal, please call Lara Paxton at 206.235.2720

Aerial for a Cause

AerLift III: An Aerial Army of Love Production
April 9th, 2008 at 7:30pm
Hale's Palladium—4301 Leary Way NW, Seattle

Tickets: $20 (12 and under $10) available at the door or at Brown Paper Tickets:

http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/27490.

Proceeds go to Camino Seguro (Guatemala): www.safepassage.org

The Aerial Army of Love, a collective of Seattle's own professional and amateur aerialists dedicated to helping world relief organizations through aerial performance, is throwing their third annual aerial benefit this April in conjunction with Moisture Festival. The benefit, AerLift III, is a one-night event showcasing a variety of aerial arts including aerial hoop, silks, corde lisse, and various forms of trapeze. Performers include members of Circus Contraption, the Aerialistas, the School of Acrobatics and New Circus Arts (SANCA), Kirkland Dance Center, and many students taught by local aerialist and Aerial Army of Love founder Lara Paxton. Musical accompaniment for part of the show will be provided by Seattle's own gypsy marching band, Orkestar Zirconium.

Seattle's Moisture Festival, celebrating its fifth anniversary this year, is a three-week long, springtime festival to showcase and celebrate comedy/varietè performance. Alongside the regular comedy/varietè and burlesque shows, the festival also hosts several shows that benefit worthy organizations. The performers donate their performances and the profits go directly to the sponsored organizations. AerLift III is one of these benefit performances.

This year, all proceeds from AerLift will be donated to Camino Seguro. Since 1999, Camino Seguro has provided educational opportunities and support to the poorest, most at-risk children of families who make their livings off of the landfill near Guatemala City.

The Aerial Army of Love, founded in the spring of 2006 by Lara Paxton, works to aid local nonprofit organizations as well as international relief organizations by providing pro bono entertainment for fundraisers and benefits. Paxton explains, "Performing can be a very narcissistic pursuit. As aerialists, we spend a lot of time and energy focused on ourselves: our form, our costumes, etc. Events like AerLift give us an opportunity to channel some of that effort away from ourselves and towards people who need our energy and resources."

Science: John Medina: 'Brain Rules'

Got this one from Gopi:

Downstairs at Town Hall, enter on Seneca Street.
Thursday, April 10, 2008
7:30 PM
Although most of us have no idea of what’s going on in our heads, brain scientists have figured out a lot about how the brain works. John Medina, developmental molecular biologist (with faculty appointments at the University of Washington’s Dept of Bioengineering and the director of the Brain Center for Applied Learning at Seattle Pacific University), discusses his new book, Brain Rules. He talks about what scientists know for sure about our brains and how exercise, memory, sleep, and stress might influence the way we teach our children and the way we work. Presented as part of the Seattle Science Lecture Series with Seattle Pacific University, UW School of Medicine, and University Book Store.

Tickets are $5 at the door only. Town Hall members receive priority seating.

Town Hall, enter on Seneca Street.

UNDERGROUND COUTURE RUNWAY FASHION SHOW

Another one from Gopi:

THE ART INSTITUTE OF SEATTLE FLAUNTS EMERGING DESIGN TALENT AT
UNDERGROUND COUTURE RUNWAY FASHION SHOW

Media members receive VIP seating at this year’s most exciting fashion showcase

When: Thursday, April 10, 2008 8:00 PM-10:00 PM (GMT-08:00) Pacific Time (US & Canada).
Where: Showbox SoDo

April 10, 2008, Seattle, WA—Design students at The Art Institute of Seattle are hard at work sketching and sewing one-of-a-kind fashion originals for college’s annual student showcase, Underground Couture. This year’s fashion forward production will be at held Thursday, April 10, the Showbox Sodo, located at 1700 First Avenue South, in Seattle.

This year’s show will showcase tomorrow’s designers with an edgy approach and fresh design esthetic. Following last year’s successful Streets of Fashion production, this year will mark the second coming of true one-of-a-kind fashion. Underground Couture will focus on ten designers presenting four to nine garment collections. Each collection promises to tell a unique and innovative story while burning up the runway. Additionally, Seattle’s fashion industry professionals will be on hand to present awards to students creating the top designs in six categories.

Underground Couture is being produced not only by fashion design and marketing students but also by many students representing the school’s photography, audio production and video production academic programs. Their participation represents a collaborative effort to produce a high quality fashion presentation as well as to provide valuable portfolio work and experience for our students.

Join us for Underground Couture at 5:00 pm or 8:00 pm. The first show provides an opportunity for high school students to explore the fashion industry. High school students will be admitted at no charge with valid school identification for the 5:00pm presentation. Tickets for both shows are available for $20.00 in advance through Ticketmaster at (206)628-0888 or www.ticketmaster.com and for $25.00 at the door. All proceeds benefit the Education Management Corporation (EDMC) Foundation, which provides scholarships to students who attend EDMC owned schools, including The Art Institute of Seattle.

Showbox Sodo, located at 1700 First Avenue South, in Seattle.
