But aside from all the great music, we also want you top engage in the local community. Partial proceeds from the Block Party go to support Home Alive and The Vera Project - two amazing non-profits that have sprung up out of the Seattle music community. If you don't know about these projects go check them out at www.theveraproject.org, and www.homealive.org. They need your support.

The Block Party also strives to get the local music community engaged in local politics, offering voter registration and booths from progressive political organizations, and progressive, pro-music politicians introducing bands and building relationships with younger voters. This year we also have Music For America joining up with the SEIU to present information on healthcare, an issue greatly impacting the music community where studies have shown less than 40% of musicians have health insurance, along with speakers from the ACLU, who in the age of Bush are more important than ever.

So while you're at the Block Party enjoying the great music, take the time to find out about the local non-profits involved, listen to and meet the local politicians, and make sure you're registered to vote in the upcoming election.

Mary Alice Cooley Print Art Collection @ Bellevue
Cornish College of the Arts in partnership with the Bellevue Place Merchants' Association presents a selection of Print Art from the Mary Alice Cooley Collection.
The Mary Alice Cooley Print Art Collection, accumulated over the past 15 years, contains over 200 original prints and reveals the quality and diversity of work produced by students at Cornish College of the Arts. Established through students' contribution of their work, selected by Cornish Print faculty, Professors Kathleen Rabel and John Overton, this growing collection is integral to the Print Art curriculum for study and research.
The collection is named for Mary Alice Cooley, a former print student and alumna of Cornish College of the Arts. Inspired by her interest in art and by her dauntless courage, the Richard Cooley family and friends established a memorial fund in her name, which has been used to support, catalog, and archive this collection.

Richard Hugo House Presents: Kim Addonizio and Rebecca Brown
Richard Hugo House is thrilled to present poet, novelist and National Book Award finalist Kim Addonizio and one of Seattle’s favorite authors, Rebecca Brown, for a reading on Saturday, July 28 at 5 p.m. Kim Addonizio’s latest book, “My Dreams Out in the Street”—a novel—hit bookstores this month and she will be giving a reading and teaching a workshop at Hugo House on her way to the Port Townsend Blues Festival.
Kim Addonizio—whose book of poetry, “Tell Me,” was nominated for the National Book Award—will read from her new novel, but she has also promised to read some of her (and our) favorite poems.

Addonizio’s work draws from a wide variety of experiences. Her previous occupations include waitress, fry cook, tennis instructor, Kelly Girl, attendant for the disabled and auto parts store bookkeeper, among others. She loves music; she’s raised a daughter and she can’t stop spending too much money on eating out. Her poems range from first love to lost love, and touch on everything in between—raising a child, losing a parent, recovering from a hangover—to name just a few. Her first novel, “Little Beauties,” featured a neurotic 30-something divorcée, a teen-aged single mother and a newborn with a definite point of view. In addition to the novels and seven collections of poetry, Addonizio has also edited an anthology on a topic dear to her heart: tattoos.

Rebecca Brown—a former Hugo House writer-in-residence and now a favorite and frequent guest—will open the night for Kim Addonizio. Like Kim, Rebecca’s work covers a range of territory. She is the author of 10 books, including “The Last Time I Saw You,” “The Dogs: A Modern Bestiary” and “The Terrible Girls.” She has also collaborated with painter Nancy Keifer for “Woman in Ill Fitting Wig” and has written a libretto for The Onion Twins. She joined Hugo House in October of 2006 and delivered bright new writing on false recollections and shared her love of music (and her collection of Beatle’s memorabilia) in a panel discussion led by L.A. Times pop columnist, Ann Powers. At Hugo House, Rebecca most recently taught a 10-week master class for writers who are working to complete book projects.

Carillon Point is proud to announce the 2nd Annual Carillon Point Outdoor Movie Night benefiting Hopelink. Come down early, set up your chair and blanket and enjoy a delicious dinner from one of our great restaurants, then relax and enjoy a late night movie on a huge screen over-looking Lake Washington. All proceeds from the evening will benefit Hopelink, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting self-sufficiency to all members of the community.

The movies are open to anyone.

The movie will start at dusk. The plaza will open 1 hour prior to dusk for seating.

Fast Heart Mart @ The Hideout

Martin Stamper and Roblyn Crawford are somewhere between Missoula and Seattle.
It's a big stretch of highway with not a lot in between.
They are driving in a van, heading west, foot on the pedal, towards Seattle, to the Hideout.
Martin sings and plays acoustic guitar. Roblyn plays stand up snare.
Martin has a pacemaker so his heart doesn't beat too fast and kill him.
He sings songs about quitting your job, dropping out of society and insects.
They are from Albuquerque and together they are Fast Heat Mart.

On Saturday, July 28th, Martin and Roblyn will be in Seattle for one very special show at the Hideout.
Critics call Fast Heart Mart things like unconventional, unusual, unpredictable, inventive, original.
I'm no critic, but I think their sound is raw and highly contagious, like Ebola or Chicken Pox.
Martin lists his musical influences as Doc Watson, Ramblin Jack Elliot, Nirvana, Bill Monroe and Beck-
but really his sound is all his own.
All you have to do is go to their website and listen to Jawbreaker Sky. That's all.
It's all the convincing you'll need. Oh, and it is a FREE show (must be 21+ with proper id).
Please join us this Saturday night and help us offer up a warm welcome to Fast Heart Mart.

James Whetzel CD release party @ The Tractor Tavern
James Whetzel is currently enjoying the success of his tour across the states, which will culminate in a CD release party this summer in Seattle, Wash.
Whetzel is a uniquely eclectic performer who plays both acoustic and electronic music. He has been playing music in Seattle since 1993 and is just ending a tour that included Washington, California, Colorado and New York.
Following the successful pre-release of Subcontinental Palmwine Punk, Whetzel will hold his formal release party for the CD at the Tractor Tavern in the Ballard area of Seattle, Sunday, July 29th at 9pm.
On the 29th at the Tractor Tavern, in addition to James on Palmwine guitar, stand up sarod and throat singing, there will be performances by virtuouso African percussionist Yaw Asare, Afro/Latin group Siendo, Indian electronic music from Shri Deepayan, and Arabic and Indian electronic sounds from Dj Muad'deep. Tickets are $10.

“Mexico” features custom hand finished digital images (ranging from 8x10 inches to 24x48 inches) in restored antiqued frames. All images were taken during our October 2006 adventure in Puerto Vallarta and Yelapa.

Groundtruthing brings us artists from across the country, each with a different approach to the idea of going “on location.” With current mapping technology such as GIS, remote sensing, and GPS devices we can know the surface of the earth with more detail and specificity then ever. The artists in this exhibition access mapping technologies and data as a resource in examining geography as a personal and social phenomenon. Using media including photography, video, sound, and performance, these artists explore the significance of topography. The work gives us an experience of both the journey and the destination, and develops new narratives of how we relate to the places we visit, inhabit and explore.

Margot Kelley is a photographer based in Cambridge, MA whose photographic project, “Local Treasures,” began when she learned about “geocacheing” a game in which individuals leave treasures in special places for others to find using gps receivers. Kelley asked “What would America look like when mapped by thousands of individuals who are highlighting their own preferred places?” Her photographs bring us a glimpse of these places.

Bruce Myren, based in Boston, uses photography to show us a cross section of the country, drawn along the 40th parallel and selected based on the points of intersection with lines of longitude. His large-format photographs bring us panoramas of these normally unrecognized places, made significant by their location on the coordinate plane.

Tara Rodgers is a sound artist currently residing in Montreal. “Places I’ve lived in and Traveled To, 1973-2005”, is an audiovisual composition tracking her own movement patterns throughout her life. The data of latitude, longitude and altitude are translated into a sound and visual composition, a waveform representation of the movement through space.

Seattle-based Thom Heileson’s two-channel video, “Scend” interplays the experience of ascending and descending. Shot traveling from the lowest point in Death Valley to an elevation of one mile above sea level, the literal transition in altitude is transformed through the mental impacts of the drive into a hypnotic, perpetual journey.

In the collaborative project Watermark, Seattle artists Vaughn Bell, Sarah Kavage and Nicole Kistler map the line through Seattle that could be the city’s future shoreline. Using topographic data and estimates of possible sea-level rise in various climate change scenarios, they delineate where the floods could rise. Performance actions mark the line throughout downtown Seattle. With this piece, viewers can become participants to go on location themselves, through a performance action or a walking tour.

Punch gallery presents Resistance, a two-person exhibition by convergent artists Andrew Kaufman and Donna Stack, who have jointly distilled wide-ranging ideas into sculpture, video, works on paper, and installation. Although they work as individual artists, Resistance combines the mutual interests of both artists, which mediates political currents into contemplative forms. Each artist was inspired by recent domestic and international events, and question ethical failings experienced at home and abroad. Kaufman’s video Hold On, Hold Up, functions on a level of simplicity which defies the struggle he undertakes to hang onto the weight of his body or support the weight of a bar, and which speaks to the struggle of the human condition. Stack’s installation piece (shouldn’t throw stones) directly questions notions of hypocrisy as a video displays one-minute clips of events ranging from the Twin Tower attacks to the Indian Ocean Tsunami inside a life-sized stained glass pup tent.

Andrew Kaufman and Donna Stack both received their MFA from the University of South Florida in 2002. Andrew Kaufman has exhibited nationally and internationally and his work was included in The Fragile Species at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts. He is also the recipient of a 2007 Artist Trust GAP Award. Donna Stack has also exhibited nationally and internationally and was recently included in the exhibition Dichotomic at Gallery Korea in New York City. She is also the recipient of a 2004 and 2007 Artist Trust GAP Award. Both artists live in Ellensburg, WA and teach at Central Washington University.
