NORTHWEST FOLKLIFE FESTIVAL 2008

The Northwest Folklife Festival is the annual free climactic celebration of year-round ethnic, folk, and traditional arts activities produced by Northwest Folklife. The Folklife Festival is Seattle's unofficial leap into summer, with four days of jam-packed excitement. Artists from the Pacific Northwest along with special guests from throughout the world create an ethnic extravaganza embracing music and dance performances, visual arts and folklore exhibits, hands-on ethnic children's activities, symposia, dance and music workshops, crafts, food, imported goods, demonstrations of traditional arts, and more! The exuberant tradition of sharing and participation at the Festival encourages exploration and learning between participants and public alike.

SHAG @ Fantagraphics Bookstore & Galler
y

We’d like to invite you all to join us at Fantagraphics Bookstore &
Gallery this Saturday, May 24 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM for an
extraordinary event featuring sensational Southern California artist
SHAG. He’ll be here to sign copies of his new Fantagraphics title
SHAG: A TO Z and present new works related to the book.

For the uninitiated, SHAG’s seductive renderings focusing on
anachronistic Americana are at once fresh and familiar. Tikis,
cocktails, Shriners, mini-skirts, and mid-century mod motifs define
SHAG’s singular aesthetic. His new book celebrates the pleasures of a
hedonistic lifestyle and the virtues of overindulgence. His drawings
and prints for the show here are wickedly affordable. SHAG’s previous
exhibitions at Roq la Rue in Seattle invariably sell out in advance.
The artist has agreed to allow local patrons the first opportunity to
add these exquisite pieces to their collections, so you won’t want to
miss this one!

DJ David James will spin the platters and liquid refreshments will be
provided. Admission is free, natch. Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery
is located at 1201 S. Vale Street in the charming artists’ enclave of
Georgetown, only minutes south of downtown Seattle. Phone:
206.658.0110. Open daily 11:30 to 8:00 PM, Sundays until 5:00 PM. And
we’ll be here on Memorial Day, May 26 until 5:00 PM. See you all this
weekend.

Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery, 1201 S. Vale Street.

h'Art Opening

I have been encouraged to invite you to a special gathering this weekend. I will be playing a set of new downtempo gems on the Mackie Fusion soundsystem starting just after midnight. Please come early and enjoy the art and sounds...

Below is message from the host:

I'd like to invite you to the third "h'Art Opening" this coming Saturday (May 24) at the Transcendent Church of Bass. We’ve been working hard on transforming a warehouse into the Transcendent Church of Bass and things are really going well…. and really busy.

Transcendent Church of Bass - 940 Elliott Ave W, Seattle WA 98119

“h’Art Opening” is a monthly gathering that consists of an early-evening art opening featuring artists from our community, flowing into a nice event with a house-party feel. Our vision is to create sacred space for people to gather; space that promotes heart opening through music art décor, lighting, and great company. The space will have a loungy feminine feel that is soft, sensual, and dreamy, an invitation to the feminine side of the dance/art scene.

Doors open at 7:20pm
We’re asking people to come early – everyone showing up before 9pm will pay a reduced entry of $5. After 9pm there will be a $10 entry. We plan to have a cash bar serving beer and wine, and all money raised at this month’s event would go towards insurance – a very important aspect of holding space for safe and sustainable events.

I’m also really excited to let you know that Louisa ’s innovative “Sonosphere” (http://www.thesonosphere.com/) is going to be run during the event. Our goal is to offer some journeys during “h-Art Opening”. Michael Brinker is curating art for this month’s h’Art, and there will be opportunity to interact with artists, and also create your own art.

Our vision is to balance live performances and DJ sets, and overall the vibe is definitely more downtempo oriented. Make no mistake, there will be plenty of opportunity to shake your booty! Here’s a partial list of performers:

Henta and Marcel Marias (live), John Ames of EQlateral (live), Julian Klappenbach (DJ), Waater Mark, Osiris Indriya (DJ), DJ Manos (DJ), Skoi (DJ), T-prohet (DJ), and Hendrik.

Seattle School's RECESSION!

Seattle School's
RECESSION!

WHERE!
Sasquatch Music Festival (Comedy Tent) in George, WA

WHEN!
Monday, May 26, 1:30 PM

WHO!
Liza Keckler (Yokokoka), Kathy Kim (Toyota), Korby Sears (Wasabi), Like Lin (Iaccoca)
SAY WHUH?!?

Gonnichiwa! In Chinese, the word for "chaos" is the same word for "bargains". So what does more US economic chaos mean...? You got it - lots more Chinese. And what better reflects impending Chinese hegemony than J-POP? Not only because the hallmark of a rising superpower is its reductive pop songs (how else to lull your fat populace to utter complacency), but also because Seattle School once again is completely clueless, but still too lazy to research beyond a quick YouTube search, and can't be bothered with details (J-POP, K-POP, A-ROD, AJAX, tomato, kalamata, same-same, whatever). Which can mean only one thing - a delightful, whirlwind revue! Seattle School presents RECESSION! \(^o^)/

LET'S GET SHOPPING!

RECESSION! is the J-POP band with a candy-coated mission to inspire America to pull itself out of the macroeconomic frownzies and back to super-sugoi, wallet-emptying optimism, using an injection of catchy teriyaki-saccharine song stylings crafts sofia coppola. The show also contains spectacular choreography and visual effects and starchy snacks. RECESSION! is like no other J-POP band you've ever seen. Partially because most groups are younger, prettier, and at least 50% more Asianer. But also because Seattle School (thinking that creating a band is analogous to getting toppings at Pinkberry) drowned everything with Anime flava. Then, scratching our chins, added sprinklings of instigating consumers into a buying frenzy towards complete economic recovery. Then added some John Baldessari, but then had second thoughts and asked the clerk to scrape off that Baldessari, but then he said it would still cost the same (dick).

IT"S RAINING STIMULUS CHECKS!

The show starts off kinda campy and ironic, then switches to self conscious sincerity, then does a complete 180 and points at you and blames you for the pregnancy, when really all you ever wanted was for her to be happy. Some may call it "comedy", but Sasquatch calls it "cala-medy". Either way, it's close to what Speed Racer shoulda/coulda been, but not nearly as good as the impossible entertainment juggernaut dubbed... Ryan Seacrest (I think I once saw the tiny and elusive Ellen Page peeking out from within the deep folds of his cavernous smile wrinkles). Come check out - RECESSION!

James at NW Folklife Festival

Hey Ladies and Gents!

I hope you are doing well!

Here's the deal, it's been five years since I made an appearance at NW folklife, and on Monday, May 26that 5:40pm I'll be there at the Alki Court stage doing a 30 minute set of Sarod & Beats. Come out and get a free sample of the latest sounds of the whetzel musical magic shop, I'm doing this one for the love and would love to see some familiar faces out there.

I'm playing at the Alki Court Stage, right after the "Unlikely Instruments Band Scramble," I believe there is also a beer garden near this stage for those who, like me, may be interested in such things . . .

Cheers!

James
