Poetry & Contemporary Performance Art

Friday, 22 February (Washington's Birthday!), from 7-9 pm, in the
gallery (2nd floor) at Phinney Ridge Neighborhood Center (PNC) in
Greenwood. http://www.phinneycenter.org/directions.shtml

It's going to be another amazing event! Come hear Seattle poet KARY
WAYSON, whose work appears in the latest edition of Best American
Poetry. Come hear MONICA FAMBROUGH from the UMASS/Amherst school of
poetry. Experience underground performance artist VANESSA DEWOLF (for
adult audiences). Director of Field-Seattle and founder of an

which performance art spins. She may be too much for On the Boards,
but she's not too much for us!

Wine reception and a complimentary copy of the February Untitled
Manifesto, a booklet of artist manifestos with hand-printed covers by
printmaker Kate Freeman. Suggested $5.

Untitled [Intersection] was conceived as a live art series, designed
to strengthen the Seattle arts community by cross-fertilizing,
fostering dialog between genres and bringing fresh talent to the fore.
On the 4th Friday of every month, between 7-9pm, Untitled
[Intersection] showcases experimental performance art and exceptional
poetry.

TEXT LOSES TIME @ McLeod Residence

Dear friends,

Our very own Nico Vassilakis (warehouse manager extraordinaire) has
written a book, and he's having a party to prove it! Won't you join us?

WHEN: Saturday, Feb.23rd, 7:30pm

WHERE: McLeod Residence
2209 2nd Avenue
Seattle, Washington 98121

WHAT: TEXT LOSES TIME
By Nico Vassilakis
Published by ManyPenny Press

But unfortunately this sounds terrible. Yep, this is this week's downgrade.

John Olson on TEXT LOSES TIME:

Implicit in the title of this collection is a ceremony of
disintegration: shattering, fragmentation. A shedding of time. A
shaking loose of the bonds of linearity and sequence. An immediacy of
contact with the tools of construction so lucid and unsullied by the
seductions of the future and the burdens of the past that the writing
becomes a continuous doing and undoing, a joyful participation in the
creation of a strange new alphabet of illimitable occurrence, a fetus
of meaning in a placenta of ink.

The presentation is twofold: writing as writing (sentences,
laminations, thought, “an undulant mind on soft display“), and
concrete poetry -- letters arranged in eccentric patterns of visual
energy. The writing is playful, probing, and provocative; sentences
in paratactic leapfrog with their teasing proposals: “what restrains
a superpower after guilt has lost its charm”; “as a windowsill is a
place for elbows, so should a beach be a horizontal wonderment with
the diesel fumes of military aggression”; “an unplugged brain is more
dangerous than any taxpayer.” The emphasis with
both strategies -- abstract and concrete, linguistic and visual -- is
to advance an experience with language that becomes an ongoing
textual genesis, Stein’s “continuous present.” It is also highly
entertaining. Vassilakis is a funny guy, a postmodern Socrates with a
quizzical cue stick.

For those of you that want a getaway party...
Bishops Pub in the heart of downtown Vashon Island is having a soiree' as only those islanders can.
Bishop's has new owners, and they seem to know what they're doing. Not only did they put in new booths, new bathrooms, and a sushi bar, they had the good sense to hire Vashon's favorite dance band to break in the floor! Hope to see y'all there; show starts at 9:00, five bucks gets you in.

OSCAR PARTY @ Moe's

OSCAR PARTY

The flat-screens in Moe Bar will be showing the Oscars(!). Kick back in one of our cozy booths with some infused-booze cocktails and watch your favorite celebrities arrive in style. The pre-show starts at 4pm and we'll provide ballots for you to make your picks before the ceremony. Jon Stewart is hosting the 80th Annual Academy Awards, which kicks off at 5pm. By lucky coincidence the show is on during Moe Bar's happy hour, which has $2 wells, $2 beers and $2 off anything on the drink menu.

Crossdress Bowling Oscar Ball 2008

"They can wreck the hall, but they won't wreck the Ball!"

Crossdress Bowling Oscar Ball 2008 at the Sunset Bowl-

7PM-Ballard Sunday Feb 24th.

All your favorite things in one deliciously tawdry event: Bowling,
Oscars, Drinking, and Dressing like your favorite tart or hunk!
How do you beat that?

This is our seventh annual and LAST Crossdress Bowling Party at the
Sunset. Never again will you get to bowl in fishnets next to the
longshoreman's union league or the local electrician's union league.

Don't worry, beer is available in the bar and try as we might, they
have never run out of beer during the course of CrossDress bowling.

Drawing fans from as far away as Canada and Mexico, this event has
become the Penticton of Pinmashing and is now officially recognized by
the Federation Internationale des Quilleurs. (I just made part up. )

We'll start bowling at 7pm sharp and go until nine at which point we
retire to the lounge for some awards, some Oscar roundup and some more
drinking. Usually someone also gets proposed to during this part of
the evening (how'd that get started?) and more revelry ensues.

The bill of freight is $20 plus $3 for shoes if you don't own your
own. We'll try to fit everyone in, but if you are late, you may have
to wait to get a lane.

The customized trophies will be prominently displayed and artcar books
will be available for sale, some of which feature artists who you may
have the chance to bowl with! Autographs still free unless otherwise
posted...

Carmi Weingrod: Through Thick and Thin @ Richard Hugo House Gallery

“Through Thick and Thin”—New Prints by Carmi Weingrod at the Richard Hugo House Gallery

Seattle – Richard Hugo House welcomes Carmi Weingrod as the first artist exhibiting in 2008 in the Hugo Gallery. In this body of work, printmaker Weingrod pays homage to the power of words by capturing the flavor and intent of idioms and other curious sayings.

Each print is inspired by a common expression in the English language and represents the artist’s interpretation of its intent—sometimes serious, sometimes whimsical.

“It’s my hope,” says Weingrod, “That my work combines the poetic quality of prints with the visual energy of language.”

The exhibit will show from February 26 to April 26 with a gallery opening from 6 to 8 p.m. on February 26. The event is free and open to the public.

About the artist

Carmi Weingrod was lured back to printmaking in 2003 by the smell of black ink and the handle of the press. She is perhaps best known in the artist community for her years of work at Daniel Smith, where she drafted dozens of technical leaflets and how-to articles on pigments, paper and other artist’s materials—that are still in circulation today. Weingrod uses a variety of printmaking techniques in her work, including traditional copper-plate etching with drypoint and spit bite, collagraphy, stencil, engraved Plexiglas and paper lithography gum transfer.

Event listing

Feb. 26-April 26—Carmi Weingrod’s “Through Thick and Thin.” Hugo Art Gallery presents a collection of new prints exploring idioms and other curiosities of language. Gallery opening Feb. 26, 6-8 p.m. FREE. Richard Hugo House, 1634 11th Ave, (206) 322-7030 www.hugohouse.org

Future Lava

Mad Max, Beyond the Military Zone on 3/8

There is a costume party on March 8th called Mad Max that you might want to buy tickets for in advance:

The next PartyPaloozaNW Costume Party will be held on Saturday,
March 8th, 2008!

And the theme is... Mad Max, Beyond the Military Zone!

The movie we are loosely basing our theme on is the third and final
in the Mad Max series starring Mel Gibson and Tina Turner, released
in 1985.

We thought it would make a great theme, ripe with costume
possibilities! Here are a few ideas to get you started:

* Post-apocalyptic
* Futuristic
* Post-retro
* Cyberpunk
* Steampunk
* Post-nuclear
* Military
* Camouflage
* GI Joe
* Survivalist
* Tina Turner
* Mel Gibson

We will be hosting the party at the newly redecorated SAFOMA
(Sammamish Forrest Manors) Cabana in Redmond, WA. The Cabana
has room for 80 people and we recommend you purchase your
tickets online as soon possible as we anticipate selling out.

To purchase your tickets online, to go: Brown Paper Tickets or call
their live 24/7 Hotline 1-800-838-3006 and ask for tickets to the
Mad Max event on March 8th! We will have a limited amount of
tickets available at the door as well, first come, first served. Ticket
prices are: $12.00 online and $15.00 at the door. The ticket price is
non-refundable.

The ticket price includes 1 drink ticket and 3 raffle prize tickets.
Guests must be 21 and older, please bring your photo ID. We will
have Snacks, Sodas and a No Host Bar. A DJ will be spinning the
tunes and there might even be an after-party. As usual, prizes will
be awarded to the best costumes!

Please RSVP to the Evite, if you received it, or on our new Meetup
group at (http://costume.meetup.com/1/) so that we can get an
idea of how many people will be attending attending.

This party is a fundraiser for ROOTS (Rising Out Of The Shadows)
which is a homeless shelter for teens and young adults. Their
website is located at: http://www.rootsinfo.org and ALL FUNDS
raised from the ticket and raffle sales at the party will be donated
directly to ROOTS on behalf of Kumar, a dear friend of ours who
passed away last year.

ROOTS was one of Kumar's favorite charity and we want to do raise
money as a memorial to how much Kumar meant to us. We are also
sponsoring a clothing drive and would also like to encourage people
to bring coats, gloves, hats, new socks and new underwear which is
greatly needed by ROOTS this time of year.

We'll have some great raffle prizes and silent auction items. To see
the list of prizes go to: http://partypaloozanw.com/sponsors.html.
If you or you company has something you would be willing to
donate, please let us know!

Its going to be another fabulous evening. We hope you can join us!

Don Volcano's Computer Corner

An old friend from Germany sent me this rather strange link:

Wurstblumenstrauß (Sausage Bouquet) http://www.pahl-fleischer.at/geschenke_include.php?fotos=wurstblumenstrauss

The other sausage installations aren't bad either. In case you don't speak German: This site is real, this is not a joke. I believe this butcher shop is somewhere in Austria.

The following link on the other hand is a joke. There is a German site called Kamelopedia that mocks Wikipedia. They dedicated a page to Wurstwasser (sausage water):

Wurstwasser (sausage water) http://kamelopedia.mormo.org/index.php/Wurstwasser

This is probably only funny to Germans but the Google translation might give you a hint:

Sausage Water http://www.google.com/translate?u=kamelopedia.mormo.org/index.php/Wurstwasser&langpair=de%7Cen&hl=en&ie=UTF8

This one is probably a pervert:

Schöne Momente (Beautiful Moments)

Prost!
