BLVD Gallery presents
“Trade Bloc: A group show of Global Ambitions”
Featuring new work by Kofie, Other, NISHI, Nhon Nguyen, Erik Abel,
Hannah Stouffer, Mateu Velasco, and Acorn
February 8 – March 8 , 2008

BLVD Gallery is proud to present “Trade Bloc”, a group show that aims
to present the global flavor of the urban art milieu. The concept of
this show came out of a series of conversations about globalism and
art. What are the benefits of a truly Global art market? What are the
effects of the internet on artists ability to gain recognition without
the participation of the traditional channels of media exposure? We
have assembled a group of great artists from Asia, North America, South
America
, and Europe whose work we feel perfectly illustrate this new
borderless world in which we live.

A Cabinet of Natural Curiosities @ Roq La Rue

Roq La Rue
Presents
“ A Cabinet of Natural Curiosities “
group show
opens Friday February 8th 6-9pm
runs through March 1st

For our first show of 2008, Roq la Rue is pleased to present a huge group show entitled “A Cabinet Of Natural Curiosities”. We asked our artists to create works relating to animals. The mysterious links we have with animals are integral part of our psychological make up. As humans we treasure them, fetishize them, turn them into symbols, anthropomorphize them, and at the same time inflict terrible cruelty upon them. We allow horrific injustices in slaughterhouses to occur and decimate their habitats, yet offer our children stuffed animals for comfort and have whole stores devoted to pampering your pet. The incongruities in the way we relate to the other creatures living on the planet relates directly to the way we view ourselves.

This show, while leaning more towards the fanciful rather than the political, offers up a wunderkammer like display of creatures, while addressing many of the issues raised above.
Contact us if you'd like to be on the preview list. Judging from the work we've seen- this will be one of our best shows in Roq La Rue history!

Artists include: Femke Hiemstra, Travis Louie, Brian Despain, Amy Sol, Lisa Petrucci, Chris Ryniak, Chet Zar, Kozydan, Junko Mizumo, Liz McGrath, Kukula, Laura Plansker, Mark Frauenfelder, Christian Vanminnen, Mark Gleason, Nathan Ota, Catalina Estrada, Sarah Joncas, Kamala Dolphin-Kingsley, John Brophy, Anthony Pontius, Jeremy Bennet, Jim Woodring, Heiko Muller, Javier S. Ortega, Slate Grove, Davey, Jen Lobo, and more..

BROKEN DISCO XI

Of all the Broken Discos I've been involved with, I have to say, this is the one I am most excited about on a very personal level. Not only is Abe Duque one of my favorite dance producers of the past decade, but he's never played in the NW. In addition, Brian Zentz has to be one of the most underrated techno DJs in the US and the few times I've got to see him spin I was blown away by both his impeccable track selection and flawless mixing. As for the locals, Eddie and Kris have remained to of the most inspiring figures in my life over the past 6 years (my stay in Seattle) and I can't think of two better representatives of kicking off the main room festivities. I am also very excited to have two of Seattle's veteran house DJs Sean Majors and Jen Woolfe, who'll be holding down the lounge on Friday. Overall, I'd say this is our strongest BD line up to date and I hope you'll join us.

On a side note, many of you know that Kris Moon will be leaving us next month and this Friday marks what will be his final Live PA in Seattle. Kris' vast contributions to the Seattle underground through Robo.Trash, the Laptop Battle, Decibel, the Division List and the Seattle Live Users Group have helped in building a strong foundation on which many of us now reside and I am very sad to see him go. Last week Kris gave me a little preview of the set, which he's been working diligently on for over a month, and I can say with complete confidence that it's his most accomplished work to date. That being said, won't you please come out early to show your support and experience what could very well be the most entertaining set of the night.

So with that, here's this Friday's program:

BLVD Project Room : Arterial Lines Video

Arterial Lines Video : http://youtube.com/watch?v=4uuGbkOslYY

The BLVD Gallery Project Room is a collaborative effort between BLVD
Gallery and TRIPLE, a new boutique in the Ballard neighborhood on
Historic Ballard Ave.
The goal of “The Project Room” is to Create a small venue for emerging
artists to develop and expand on concepts through Site specific
installations.
The first Installation in the Project Room is “Arterial Lines” by Nhon
Nguyen, a Seattle based artist who is using the opportunity to create a
mural
that reflect on his experiences living in Osaka Japan over the past 3
years. This piece will continue to be worked over the course of the
installation, eventually incorporating audio of field recordings in
Osaka and the contributions of a variety of local artists. There will
also be a serigraph created to coincide with the installation.

artist statement- Today’s modern society is so dependent on technology
that it has become so important in our everyday existence. Modern
cities are hardwired to support and supply people with the power and
communication sources that they need. Having lived and worked in Japan
I feel that no where else in the world this is more evident than the
major cities of Japan.
What fascinated me about living in Japan was how efficient everything
was as a result of their advanced technology. The downside to all this
technology is that it requires a lot of power and all the cables and
wires to carry it. In the US, we bury most of our power cables but in
Japan, they are run above ground due to the threat of earthquake
damage. The title Arterial Lines is in reference to how this system of
power and communication lines are comparatively important to the
functioning of the city, much like our own circulatory system that
keeps us alive. These wires are the veins and arteries that keeps the
city alive.

Vatsalya group show reception and benefit

One of the highlights of the trip I took to Rajasthan , India last fall with Amanda Koster’s group was our 2-day visit to Vatsalya . They are a non-governmental organization (NGO) located outside Jaipur, India that rescues orphans from the streets of India’s cities, and rehabilitates them through education and vocational skills training. Vatsalya may not fit your preconceptions of an orphanage: It’s a cheerful, clean campus out in the fresh air of the countryside. During February 2008 at Treed, four travelers in our group are displaying our photographs of life at Vatsalya.

10% of the proceeds from this show’s photo sales benefits the children at Vatsalya.

As I mentioned in last month's email, the reception is this Sunday!

Vatsalya group show reception and benefit

Sunday, February 10, 2008, from 7 to 9 p.m.

GMP: "FOUR BARS AND SEVEN BEERS AGO..."

Hey Guerrillas!

Since we missed Santarchy (due to a family emergency), and it's been sooo long since an official GMP event, we're giving you not one but two events in February to look forward to. Okay, okay... one of them isn't organized by us, but we've been officially invited, so there.

"FOUR BARS AND SEVEN BEERS AGO..."
Evening of Tuesday, February 12th
Exact Time & Location(s) to be announced

So you had a blast at Santarchy, loved the Zombie March, and can't wait for Bunnarchy and Brides of March? Well, we've got something for you!

It's become an underground tradition for some well known Seattle artists to celebrate the birthday of Abraham Lincoln by growing beards, dressing in top hats and suits, and spending February 12th roaming the city having drinks and turning heads.

This year, ol' Abe is turning 199 years old, and in honor of that momentous occasion, we've all been invited to join the fun!

Here's the official invite from the 'Abes' themselves:

I'm turning 199 years old this year! Holy shit!

I freed the slaves, I was Americas tallest president and was born on the same day as Chuck Darwin! (Never met him.) They used to call me The Railsplitter, Uncle Abe, Honest Abe, The Illinois Baboon, The Sage of Springfield and some other shit. My Wife's name is Mary Todd and she cooks a mean potato pancake! I had a son Willie who died in 1862. I'm on a mountain, a penny, the five spot and there's a nice statue of me in the nation's capitol.

"The best thing about the future is that it comes only one day at a time." "Whatever you are, be a good one." "It has been my experience that folks who have no vices have very few virtues..."

Please Join us on February 12th for a rip roaring night to celebrate my birthday!

Grab a top hat, grow your beard (or if you absolutely must buy a fake one or paint one on), a tuxedo, and join us for a night of drinking, celebrating, and good old fashioned fillabustering!

MORE INFO TO COME on location....

And be sure check out Abraham's Birthday site on Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/abrahamlincolnfeb12

TIG's Dancing on the Valentine @ Nectar

Hey there, Party Volcano

We're writing today about a very special benefit show that we're honored to help present. It's called Dancing on the Valentine and it's a Leukemia benefit featuring loads of great Seattle bands, including CENTRAL SERVICES, C'MON C'MON, THE FEMURS, THE HOTELS, BRE LOUGHLIN, MS. LED, PETER PARKER, RICHARD MOUNTAIN (MEMBERS OF THE COPS) and DJ DANGER NUN.

The show is presented by (and in honor of) our good pal Jenny George, who was diagnosed with Leukemia at the age of 12 and was not expected to live more than 30 days. Luckily, Jenny proved the prognosis wrong, and we're grateful for Jenny's presence in our lives every day.

DANCING ON THE VALENTINE began in 2004 as a way to celebrate Jenny's 30th birthday while supporting a cause important to her and those who love her. The first two benefit shows have each raised over $3,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society... and have been a great celebration to boot!

We know this year's benefit will be the best one ever, with a stellar lineup of local bands playing a flashback-to-high-school Valentine's Day dance circa 1985! Bring your valentine to Nectar Lounge this year, or come stag and find your next sweetheart at the show.

The deets:
What: Dancing on the Valentine 3 -- A 1985 Valentines Day Dance
When: Valentine's Day, of course. Doors at 8p.
Where: Nectar Lounge - 412 N. 36th Street in Fremont
Why: Woo your sweetheart. Find a new heartthrob. And help us raise money for a great cause.
Tickets: $10 at the door, 21+

For more information, please go to the Dancing on a Valentine MySpace page, or send inquires our way.

Yours in taffeta and tulle,
*three imaginary girls*
