The Frantic Menagerie Orchestra

An upcoming performance at the Seattle Drum School will showcase the talents of a young Seattle area composer and fellow award-winning high school jazz musicians.

This performance will feature the compositions and arrangements of Sam Gray, senior at Garfield High School and member of the Garfield Jazz Ensemble. Gray, who started composing in 2004 at the age of 14, was first given the opportunity to have his music performed in 2007 by Clarence Acox, director of the Garfield High School jazz program. Since then, Garfield's jazz band has played Gray's works at a number of concerts.

This concert will highlight the eclectic nature of Gray's work and the many musical achievements of the members of his ensemble. The Frantic Menagerie Orchestra, the performing group, is composed of some of the best high school jazz musicians in the city, including students from the award-winning Garfield and Roosevelt High School Ensembles. The arrangements to be performed range in musical style from re-imagining of a "They Might Be Giants" number to original songs that Gray describes as "frenetic and claustrophobic."

Gray is a long-time student of renowned local composer and producer Wayne Horvitz, notable for producing many artists including Bill Frisell, Robin Holcolmb, the World Sax Quartet, Eddie Palmieri, and Ron Miles, among others. Horvitz is also well known for his own groups and original compositions. Two songs on Horvitz's newest album, "Mr. Man In The Moon," feature Gray's horn arrangements and performance.

"I get my inspiration from sitting at a piano and poking at keys until I find an interesting sound, then categorically ruining it until becomes a song," Gray said.

The L.A.B., the performance space at the Seattle Drum School, is dedicated to hosting a "wide range of shows featuring all genres of music in a safe, positive environment where kids and adults of all ages can feel welcomed and encouraged," according to their website.

Ouch My Eye presents: Ship It!

Ouch My Eye is pleased to present: Ship It! – an installation art show celebrating the United States Postal Service, showing our boys (and girls) in blue (shorts) that we still need (and love) them.

Saddened by the dwindling use of the age-old Postal Service, Ouch My Eye sent a call to artists worldwide, to ship whatever their hearts desire to their Seattle gallery space. Within weeks, parcels began to arrive, some with political messages, others with symbolism, and others they are still trying to figure out.

Motrecraft is comprised of four very cool ladies, who combine a mixture of guitar noise, sultry screeching vocals and thunderous earth shattering rhythms into a mosaic of songs for your entertainment. They may be dressed in bubble wrap, and promptly shipped after the show.

Ouch My Eye is a collective of creatives working independently and collaboratively on numerous creative projects ranging from photography to architecture. Ouch My Eye strives to expand the opportunities for artists to create and share their work and blur the lines between art gallery and design studio.

Opening Reception:
Pioneer Square Artwalk
Thursday, May 1st, 7pm - 10pm

Opening Party:
Friday, May 2nd, 8pm - 1am
With Special Guests: Motrecraft

Cirque Du Soleil (until May 25th)

Seattle Spin writes:

Performance: Cirque Du Soleil , until May 25th, $55+. These shows go past entertainment, to inspiration and feeling the fantasy. Folks usually travel to Vegas to see this show, so we're luck to have it come to us. Cirque Du Soliel has become the benchmark of human acts of awe. It's a surreal experience that will have you stuttering to find the right words to describe it. It's well worth the splurge; works as a birthday gift, too.

Mexican Votive / Retablo Paintings

Mexican Votive / Retablo Paintings

By Hugo, Daniel and Luis Vilchis, from Mexico City (Sons of retablero Alfredo Vilchis)
Opening: Saturday, May 3, 2008, 6-9 pm (through June 30)
Roy’s BBQ 4903 ½ Rainier Ave. So. (across the street from Tutta Bella)
Columbia City, Seattle WA 206. 723 7697

These colorful paintings on tin come from the 500-year-old tradition of votive paintings, ex-vos or retablos. They are traditionally commissioned in trade for services, to tell the miraculous tale and give thanks to the intervening saint for answered prayers, miracles. They depict life’s nearly-tragic stories and the realities of survival, with humor, honesty and charm. Their work blends Mexico’s traditional popular art with their own contemporary take on modern day culture. They tackle such themes as emigration, homosexuality, prostitution, substance abuse, dog bites, bus accidents, urban violence, infidelity, jealousies and runaway pigs. About the artists: Hugo Aledo, Daniel Alonso, and Luis Angel Vilchis are sons of the well-known contemporary self-taught painter Alfredo Vilchis Roque. They live in a working class barrio in Mexico City, and have learned the trade and tradition from their father, whose work is exhibited and commissioned throughout Mexico. Their work has been shown and published internationally, along with their fathers, in Mexico City, Paris, Miami, Chicago, and Seattle.

Korean Cultural Event

John writes:

SATURDAY MAY 3RD
I'm working for the Korean Students Association, and they have a very comprehensive Korean Cultural Event at Kane Hall. Room 130 7:00PM - 9:00PM.
The show features a Korean fashion show, a fighting exhibition, and a 30 peice musical performance (Something like Taiko if I'm not mistaken), and a moderen band performing along with a Korean traditional instrument ensemble.
If you haven't been to Korea, this is probably about as close as it gets over here.
