For May BLVD Gallery presents "Combine, A group show of Cut Paper,
Collage, and Assemblage". The title of this show “Combine” is a
reference to Robert Rauschenbergs term for the groundbreaking
assemblage work that he made starting in the 1950's. This work as well
as the amazing collages of artists like Romare Bearden, Paul Horiuchi,
and a multitude of others have paved the way for the current generation
of artists who are utilizing collage and assemblage in their work.
Whether through the perspective of design or the traditional art world
“Combine” takes a look at a group of artists that have incorporated
collage in their work as a way to urther explore the boundaries of
what they are capable of outside of the tradition artistic media.

Esao Andrews and Fuco Ueda @ Roq la Rue

Roq la Rue

presents

Esao Andrews
and
Fuco Ueda

opens Friday May 9th 6-9pm
runs through June 7th
music by DJ Vodka Twist
Contact us to be placed on a preview list!

Roq la Rue is very pleased to present an exhibition of new works by two painters, Esao Andrews (NY) and Fuco Ueda (Japan). Both paint in wildly different styles, yet have a similarity in their use of surrealistic dream-like imagery and ambiguously sinister atmospheres.
Esao Andrews paints with oil on wood panels with a refined painterly technique. Much of his work features a subtle dose of black humor, and his subject matter ranges from lovely women entangled with alien-like organics, to decayed buildings that play with the ideas of sanctuary, to full on surrealistically morphing, mashed, and twisted characters that explore allegorical themes.
Fuco Ueda has a delicate style created by mixing acrylics with an almost watercolor effect while remaining incredibly vivid, and the use of shell powder which creates and unusual finish. Her paintings usually depict young women who seem to be the sole humans in her magical realist narratives. These young women often interact with nature, and often with each other with a subtle ferocity. For this series the chrysanthemum is a dominant image, a symbolically charged flower in several cultures, particularly Japan.

Fuco Ueda "Dream Passage"
Esao Andrews " Guadiana "

Emerald City Comicon

John writes:

FRIDAY MAY 9TH and SATURDAY MAY 10TH
Emerald City Comicon - Washington State Convention and Trade Center.
(John says: This is almost a mainstream event, but I keep running into people that haven't heard about it, so here it is...
This appears to be more than just a comic book convention. The editor of DC comics will be there. The special appearance list reads like a whos who of the sci-fi world (Including Danial Logan from Attack of the Clones), and Jamie Bamber of Battlestar Galactica. There are also vendors and panel discussions, and original art on display, and... There is actually so much going on that I can't write a comprehensive blurb on it. So I'm just going to send you all to thier website.)
Sat. 10:00am - 6:00pm

Jordan Crane / ECC Party at Fanta Bookstore

Dear friends,

Please join us this Saturday, May 10 for another wild night at

the after-party for exhibitors and guests of the Emerald City
Comicon, where Crane is among the featured artists (along with Peter
Bagge on Saturday and Ellen Forney on Sunday). The opening also
coincides with the lively Georgetown Second Saturday Art Attack,
featuring art, music and more at over 30 locations throughout the
enchanting Georgetown neighborhood.

Crane’s acclaimed comics have been published by Fantagraphics Books,
including two issues of the comic book series Uptight, and the
graphic novels The Last Lonely Saturday and The Clouds Above (the
latter recently issued in trade paperback).

This’ll be a really fun evening. Promise. LIBATIONS.

And mark your calendars for the following Saturday, May 17 for the
debut of Peter Bagge’s series of Manik skateboards - yes,

enough, the next Saturday, May 24 we’ll be hosting an exhibition of
brand new work and a book signing with the international sensation SHAG!

Are you looking for more? Are you wanting a safe place to try out some of your fantasies?
The Kinky Carnival is a fun sexy playground for the secret, ( or not so secret ) hedonist in you. A spacious place for sensual expression that is clean, beautiful and well-lighted. Attend on your own or with your partner(s).
After paying the entry fee and checking your coat, you will be greeted by an Ambassador and taken on a tour. There's an altar to Aphrodite, Goddess of Love, at the entrance. You will ascend the stairs (there is also an accessible entrance in the back) and be escorted through our booths that start with Kiss and Cuddle and end with Zap and Pierce. After the tour, wander freely and explore. See the Burlesque and Performance Art show at 8:00pm downstairs!

Science: Leonard Mlodinow: Randomness

$5

7:30 PM

Co-author with Stephen Hawking of A Briefer History of Time, physicist Leonard Mlodinow’s latest work The Drunkard’s Walk (referencing Stephen Jay Gould’s famous illustration of random behavior) is an irreverent look at the impact of chance on our lives. Also a screenwriter (Star Trek: the Next Generation, and MacGyver), Mlodinow’s witty, reflective book reveals the ways randomness makes it impossible for most people to discern trends, even as our psychology creates an illusion of comprehension—and control.

Downstairs at Town Hall enter on Seneca Street.
