M.I.A. (London/Sri Lanka, hip hop, pop, dancehall) @ Showbox Sodo

Touring to support her second release, Kara, M.I.A. is turning heads with her unique blend of London hip hop, Sri Lankan pop, dancehall beats and what she calls "third world democracy". Her new album truly embodies the modern global spirit and incorporates field recordings made in Japan , India , Australia and Trinidad . Her live shows are reputed to have a revolutionary vibe like some other London rebel rockers from decades past, probably why US customs denied her visa to enter the US to work on this record.

ART BIZARRE @ Christoff Gallery

I know this is short notice, but I've recently been invited to be part of an ART SHOW this Saturday. An Artist's Reception is from 5-9pm.There will be live music and a full bar, so it would be a nice place to stop by before your other plans for the evening!

I'll be showcasing all sorts of photographs: matted, framed, gift cards, etc. Everything will be priced to SELL (i.e. cheap)!!! It will be a clearinghouse with photos from all over the world: Croatia, Cuba, Norway, England, Ireland, Brazil, Costa Rica, France, etc.

Need a holiday gift for your family/friends? Come on by! I will also be taking orders for any gifts/prints/etc. that can be delivered within 5-7 business days. While cash is preferred, credit cards will also be accepted.

Afterwards (around 9:30pm), we'll be heading to a nearby bar (most likely the 9lb Hammer) for well-deserved drinks!
For those of you who cannot attend on Saturday, my exhibit will be up throughout the week, ending on Friday, Nov 23rd. Check gallery for hours.
Would love to see you,

Kristen

Special Screening: Float @ EVO

LADIES, LADIES, LADIES….and Gents…

Just because you happened to wear a bra, doesn’t mean you’re being supported….

As all you ladies out there know, it can be hard to find the right gear, at the right fit, with the right help. So why not support the companies and shops that focus on our needs as riders and individuals?

Our friends at EVO are kicking off a SPECIAL screening Saturday, November 17th of FLOAT, an all female snowboard film (doors @ 8pm). EVO will also be dishing out tips on HOW TO PURCHASE WOMEN SPECIFIC GEAR, supplying free food and drinks, and finally of course, giving you special deals on current snowboarding inventory.

And…if you missed out on any 2007 Mamafest gear, we will have our inventory present at reduced prices. If you miss this, you will be sad.
So come out and support the local shops that are going the extra mile for the ladies in film, snow and service! Check out evoseattle.com for more info.

OZOMATLI (East L.A., Latino rock, hip hop, salsa) @ Showbox Market

Journeymen from East LA , Ozomatli have been at it for 12 years. A mash up of Spanglish hip-hop, salsa, cumbia, and dub - their latest album, Don't Mess With The Dragon, adds middle eastern funk to the mix. Ozo's live shows are legendary for their celebratory vibe, and often erupt into drum-line community parties. In an effort to spread that good vibe around, the US State Department sent Ozomatli on tour this summer in the Middle East and beyond as cultural ambassadors. Seriously.

Maureen Whiting Company @ On the Boards

Maureen Whiting Company returns to On the Boards with a little solo:

Part physically extreme dance and part descriptive ballad, the mysteriously and humorously warped,
“love is god and it’s made for me”, is inspired by and set to Nina Hagen’s song “Zahra”.

Choreographed by Maureen Whiting, performed by Cassie Wulff, and developed by choreographer and dancer.

Last seen in “Ten Tiny Dances”, it is again redeveloped for stage so if you missed it in September, see it in one week!

Don Volcano's Computer Corner

Everybody knows the rough idea of Thanksgiving: In 1621, near the end of the Plymouth colony's first year in America, the settlers gave thanks for a plentiful first harvest. The pilgrims and the natives celebrated together (they had arranged a peace treaty), and everyone feasted on geese, ducks, deer, corn, oysters, fish and berries.

Things have changed quite a bit since then. It seems in 2007 it's all about size. C.D.O. Andrew ran across this weird thing about building a giant German burger:

Bon Appétit!
