Process @ BLVD Gallery

BLVD Gallery presents
"Process"

PROCESS, a show featuring graffiti artists and style writers Hews, Sneke,
and Virus, provides the viewer a rarely seen glimpse into the approach and
evolution of their art. Process incorporates and displays the methods
involved in creating the art and reintroduces it in a way that gives the
public a window into what goes on behind the “finished” pieces.

Sneke works beyond the traditional 2d of Graffiti into the realm of
sculpture and relief. In a way exploring the dimensional qualities of
his work as well as isolating elements to accentuate the more abstract
forms of the graffiti lexicon. The architectural qualities of
graffiti is what shows in the work of Hews. His canvas work explores
the foundations of building veritable siege engines made of alphabets.
Vancouver legend VIRUS works with the pop pastiche that Graffiti has
adored since Fab 5 Freddy first painted his
Campbell Soup can tribute to Andy Warhol in the seventies.

“There is something raw about seeing the perfect ‘imperfections.’ There is
an energy in the thumbnails, the sketches, and the brainstorming that does
not always come across in the final product.” -Hews

Process highlights the elements of the “unseen” and celebrates the
individual approach of the different artists. The final pieces may look
similar but each artist incorporates distinct methods in executing their
work. Hews, Sneke, and Virus are now transcending their graffiti art and
applying the elements into different formats and mediums.

Opening @ Roq la Rue

Roq la Rue
presents

Scott Musgrove "Late Fauna of North America" Brian Despain " Ryan Heshka "Radio Army"

Opening Friday Nov 9th 6-9pm
all artists will be in attendance
runs through Dec 1st

We are very excited to present November's show featuring artists Scott Musgrove, Brian Despain, and Ryan Heshka.

Scott Musgrove is one of the top tier artists of the Pop Surrealism movement. His work focuses on a fictional landscape populated by extinct impossible creatures. Evoking Victoria era "wunderkammer" museum displays, Scott's work is often graced by identifying species nameplates and encased in aged frames. For this show he has a small collection housed in antique union photograph cases, placed in specially built shelf and lucite cases. The contrast between the antique housing and the cartoonish appeal of his pop eyed, squirmy creatures takes the viewer into a fantastical realm while echoing today's issues with rapidly disappearing wildlife from our world.
Brian Despain also works with imaginary landscapes but populates his world with seemingly self aware and melancholy robots. His work blends the natural world with technology with a slightly morbid slant. Skulls, machinery, and birds provide the forefront for a seemingly arcane number system the artist employs in all his work.
Ryan Heshka upapologetically pays homage to Golden Era sci fi pulp while creating a style that is also uniquely his own. For this series he explores further his themes of man vs nature, in this case the "nature" is from another world. This new series (including his largest paintings to date) is influenced by WW2 era propaganda posters, which demonized the enemy into an cartoonish and evil cartoon. Is this case, the "enemy" really is an alien threat!

ARTS GUMBO: JAPAN

On Saturday, November 10th, the spotlight is on JAPAN as Arts Gumbo presents One World Taiko.

One World Taiko presents a contemporary style of Japanese drumming that incorporates dynamic and fluid movement as well as heart pounding percussion. The music is drawn from Japan's ancient tradition of lively and spirited festival drumming and One World Taiko's own creative rhythms, arrangements and choreography, adding a modern spirit to the ancient tradition of taiko.

Their repertoire includes traditional pieces, which were taught to them by the world-renowned groups Kodo and Ondekoza from Japan, and their own original compositions infused with contemporary rhythms from their love of jazz and world music. They perform on traditional Japanese instruments such as odaiko (large drum), chudaiko (medium sized drum), shimedaiko (small, rope-tied drum), shinobue (bamboo flute) and koto (13-stringed zither like instrument) along with Japanese percussion instruments such as atarigane (brass gong), chappa (hand cymbals) and hyotan (gourd shaker).

A Taiko drumming workshop for families will
follow the performance along with complimentary Bento boxes.

INDIAN CLASSICAL MUSIC: A PAN-INDIAN PERSPECTIVE

Although the Classical Music of India has a unified theoretical base, there are number of regional varieties found throughout South Asia . The two major traditions of music in the region are the music of South India, or Karnatak Music, and the music of North India , or Hindustani Music. In the two halves of this performance, Seattle-based artists Raman Iyer and Arijit Mahalanabis will present recitals of each form.

Cornish Music Series and Ragamala present

INDIAN CLASSICAL MUSIC: A PAN-INDIAN PERSPECTIVE

BIOGRAPHIES
Raman Iyer, who will be presenting a recital of Karnatak Music on the Violin in the first half of the performance, was trained in Karnatak music by Nedumangad Shivanandan, and by his parents Valli and Mahadeva Iyer. He received guidance in Violin from the world-renowned maestro Dr. L. Subramaniam, and has subsequently had a close association with the leading Veena player Sreevidhya Chandramouli. Raman has a very active concert career as both a soloist and an accompanist. He was featured in solo recitals last December during Chennai's prestigious annual Music Season, and as an accompanist has played for nearly all of the leading South Indian vocalists of our time.

The second half of the recital will consist of a vocal concert of Hindustani music by Arijit Mahalanabis. Arijit received his initial training from Shahana Banerjee, an All-India Radio artist from Delhi .

Starting in 1981, after moving to the United States , Arijit began a period of self-study during which he taught himself many of the fundamentals of Hindustani music. While in college, at Penn State University , Arijit was instrumental in maintaining Raaga, a group of musicians who worked to bridge the gap of understanding between North and South Indian musicians. In 1999, Arijit moved to Seattle and began his study in Dhrupad music under Shantha Benegal, and subsequently under the leading Dhrupad vocalist Uday Bhawalkar. Arijit has performed for most major organizations in the area, and has also performed across the country. He is an adjunct faculty of Expressive Arts at Evergreen State College, the president of Ragamala and a graduate student in Ethnomusicology at University of Washington .

Science: Jonah Lehrer 'Proust Was a Neuroscientist'

While an undergraduate at Columbia University, 25-year-old-Rhodes scholar Jonah Lehrer worked in a neuroscience lab, trying to figure out how the mind remembers. At the same time, he happened to betaking a course in twentieth-century literature and began reading Proust. Reading Swann’s Way while waiting for an experiment to finish, he began to understand how many artists have anticipated scientific breakthroughs with their artistic insights. In Proust was a Neuroscientist, Lehrer explains how Cézanne anticipated the understanding of human sight, Walt Whitman intuited the biological basis of thought, and Proust penetrated the mysteries of memory. Lehrer, editor-at-large for SEED magazine and writer of the blog, The Frontal Cortex, argues that science is not the only path to knowledge. Presented as part of the Seattle Science Lecture Series with University Book Store.
