Fremont First Friday Art Walk

Fremont First Friday Art Walk is November 2nd from 6-9pm - Rain or Shine!

6:00 – 9:00 "Dia de los Muertos" – SPECIAL EVENT - Lobby of the building at 3516 Fremont Pl. N. (just east) of the Lenin Statue - Beverages and snacks are provided.

For one night only, Bad Fruit Foundation (BFF) presents an exhibition of photographs by Almendra Sandoval highlighting Dia de los Muertos celebrations taken in her native Mexico.

Visitors to the Fremont First Friday Art Walk will receive a map directing them to neighborhood galleries, studios and art spaces for a self-guided tour. The Bad Fruit Foundation will also be handing out Wellness Kits to all visitors. These "swag bags" contain a variety of useful health-orientated information and first aid supplies.

Art walkers will also have the opportunity to memorialize loved ones in the Day of the Dead tradition by adding to the temporary ofrenda on site.

BFF has a simple goal: To support Seattle-area creative types (including artists, comics, dancers, filmmakers, musicians, painters, photographers, poets, sculptors, singers and writers) who are facing life-altering illnesses and are un- or under- insured. Their assistance comes through advocacy, distribution of wellness kits and special events and benefit shows. In 2008, BFF will launch a new inter-active website with details on health care options for artists (and others).

Fixed Value Opening Reception

New York artist Kharis Kennedy explores the subjective versus the objective with her series of paintings Fixed Value at McLeod Residence. The series addresses the use of subjective terminology to critique artwork and opposes the notion of "artistic value," instead offering empirical value and measurement for each work of art. Fixed Value opens with a reception on Friday, November 2, 2007 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and runs through November 24.

Dreaming the Emerald City @ Frye

This is a member's only reception.
But maybe it's a good time to become a member of the Frye (don't know about Henry).

Dreaming the Emerald City:
The Collections of Charles and Emma Frye and Horace C. Henry
November 3, 2007–April 6, 2008

Dreaming the Emerald City—the first exhibition to display the Frye Art Museum Collection along with loaned artwork—showcases significant paintings from both museums’ holdings: for example, George Inness’s Goochland, West Virginia (1884) and Julian Alden Weir’s Farmhouse (c. 1888–90) from the Henry and Hermann Corrodi’s Venice (c. 1900) and Dániel Somogyi’s View of Königssee (1878) from the Frye. Exhibited together, Henry’s and the Fryes’ collections reveal important genres and themes from European and American art history, including Barbizon School landscapes and Orientalist and Romantic subjects. Also on view will be archival photographs and exhibition catalogues documenting the exhibition programs and building projects undertaken by the Frye Art Museum and the Henry Art Gallery since their founding.

"Repeat After Me" @ On The Boards

Hi Party V,

THU – SUN | NOV 1 - 4, 2007 | 8PM
On the Boards is excited to have the raucous Hand2Mouth Theater up from Portland this weekend. Their show “Repeat After Me” mines the popular music traditions of the American heartland using karaoke tactics, outlandish theatricality and absurdist humor to question what it means to be a true American. Think of it as a lunatic pep rally featuring heartfelt working songs, campfire sing-a-longs, southern rock anthems and SUVs. $18 general | $12 under 25

THE QUEEN SHMOOQUAN SHOW @ The Rendezvous' JEWEL BOX THEATRE

THE QUEEN SHMOOQUAN "say my name" SHOW
Not everyone among us has yet been exposed to Queen Shmooquan. If
you're one of those unfortunate people, you must see her solo show at
the Rendezvous Jewel Box Theater.

As played by Jeppa Hall, Queen Shmooquan is part sex goddess, part
retarded child. In her performances at Moisture Festival, Drunk Puppet
Nite, and at the Pink Door, Shmooquan is a kind of priestess of
strange rituals in which the stuff of religion gets tangled up with
the trappings of politics, as performed by a sexually precocious wild
child. She's beyond weird, but she still manages to be poetic,
prophetic, absurd and never less than compelling. Her new show, "say
my name," is series of performance pieces, featured once a month at
the Rendezvous' Jewel Box Theater.

Each episode will feature Queen Shmooquan in all her rubber chicken
lovin', transcendental glory. The "say my name" show, following a
format inspired by Mr Roger's Neighborhood and Pee Wee's Playhouse,
hopes to inspire self-love and appreciation of differences! With help
from her band "The Scented Panty Candles," Queen Shmooquan will dance,
sing and eat her way through a psychedelic, super-real journey.

The Queen is also featured at The Pink Door as part of "Burlesque
Behind the Pink Door": Saturdays Nov. 10, Dec. 1,
Dec 15 show starts 11pm.

Cold Lava

Treats or Tricks on Halloween 2007

PV reporter Allen Leschi has sent us this Cold Lava report on Treats or Tricks on Halloween. We had warned our readers about the high ticket prices and it looks like our concerns were justified. You may say it was more "tricks" than "treats".

After paying $50 per ticket for the "open bar" function, I was expecting more than the Lucky Clam and Ouch My Eye delivered. Others paid more for the ~300 tickets for the sold out shindig.
The loft space south of Pioneer Square was a bit crowded with no separately defined dance floor, which gave it that cozy party feel. Typical long lines for the two bathrooms.. and long lines for the two bars pouring midshelf liquor, which ran out of whiskey by 12:30. Soon thereafter they ran out of everything else except Rum, leaving a lot of folks that spent. I'd say they had some rookies manning the bar. Please, next time, give the crowd their money's worth.

The sound was kind of muddy, maybe not loud enough.. and the DJ's lackluster. There was some "dead air" that might have been when the MC was announcing, but with the muddy sound it was hard to hear. Having the DJ booth so far removed from the crowd makes it a bit more impersonal.
We arrived a bit later, and all I could spy for food was big tubs of bbq chicken wing - about the messiest thing for people wearing costumes.

Decor was nice, though with the crowds it was hard to admire most of it. The level of costuming was great, with lots of the pretty people in attendance. A tad too many guys perhaps. The fellow that came as the giant box of wine, with a working spout, was a hit. And the Prince imposter was damn fine, though about a foot taller than the artist formerly known as. And it's not a Halloween party without two LDS missionaries.

As advertised there was a stripper pole upstairs, though not quite enough room to take in the pole action. The cage downstairs was a nice touch, with some S&M lite action taking place.
There was supposed to be some sort of raffle, though my "gift" bag was missing it's raffle ticket.
Overall an interesting space, good costumes, kind of lame music, expensive tickets. For a house party or free party it would have been great, but this was a gig that people shelled out serious dough for...I hope the next go round they lower the price or raise the bar.
