"Monster Mayhem and Day Of The Dead Delights" @ Roq la Rue

Roq la Rue presents
"Monster Mayhem and Day Of The Dead Delights"

featuring the work of Pooch and Ojimbo

opens Friday October 13th 6-9pm
Music by DJ Vodka Twist
show runs through November 4th 2006

Roq La Rue is pleased to present a Halloween themed show (like we usually do) this October. Rather than a group show, this year we decided to focus on two extraordinary artists working in the Lowbrow genre.

Michael " Pooch" Pucciarelli (Florida) creates intricately detailed paintings that feature his carnavalesque worlds, usually in which characters are sent on careening rollercoaster rides through worlds populated by movie monsters, skeletons, and underground pop culture icons. Pooch the allows himself the freedom to explore various cultural symbols, but also keeps inspired by digging deeper into those respective subjects. His newest works reflect his constant exposure to Florida theme parks, where surreal carnival ride facades reflect the false fronts of modern society. Meaning aside, Pooch’s paintings are created to hold the viewer’s attention, which is quite a challenge in today’s TV and computer age. Pooch’s technique is intensive, and he paints the devil in the details.

Artist Jim "Ojimbo" Sheely (Ohio) carves mind boggling detailed wood pop culture totem poles and wall pieces. Carving almost exclusively from kiln dried American basswood, Ojimbo originally was entranced by the carving of cultures in which it was integral to their culture, such as the Pacific Northwest Coast tribes, New Zealand's Maori, and Balinese carvers. However, rather than simply emulate it, Ojimbo decided to stay true to his own sensibilities and his interest in the dark comic grotesque qualities of art that has become a hallmark of much contemporary pop art. Ojimbo often sands down his pieces, to give them a timeworn look, like a toy handed down through generations.
His attention to technical detail and sublime color sense ratchet each piece up from amusing curio to sophisticated folk art like sculpture.

The Heavenly States @ the Triple Door

The air'schanging; summer's over, and new music abounds. After a nice courtship, I'm happy to announce my new "match": the US's only band to have ever played Libya, Oakland-based The Heavenly States.

So, if you're around, come join me this Friday (Oct 13th) @ the Triple Door, as The Heavenly States open for Califone.

About THS:
The Heavenly States landed in Oakland, CA early in the new millennium. It's first member, Ted Nesseth previously of Minnesota, played guitar upside down because he was a lefty underclassman who abandoned school for scandal. The second member, Jeremy Gagon, studied jazz in Texas but moved to California to build things. The third member, Genevieve Gagon, was an ex-graduate who tended to write out of the box. All three were on the lamb when they found each other and began to write rock songs inspired by the great SST records, young Springsteen, Dinosaur Jr., the Minutemen, Shostakovich and the many others of their collective past. Ted was the veteran of several projects including his band Fluke Starbucker which produced two and a half albums before The Heavenly States were born.

In 2002 under the moniker Fluke Starbucker they put out the 7" Elephants from Ants which featured songs recorded in the middle of the night for free at a media and engineering school. In 2003, they shared a special 7" release with Coldplay and The Postal Service. Their first self-titled full-length album was recently re-issued in the USA and the UK featuring a special 3-song single with a punk track called King Epiphany produced by John Agnello and another epic version of the same song produced by Colin Gagon. The spoken word piece Monument forms the center of this triptych from ancient Mesopotamian history and Fort Media 2004.

Their brand new record Black Comet, out July 2005, is a real chamber-rock record, relentless and full but raw and truly played. The songs reveal the band's obsession with protecting the jagged edges of rock from being snipped off, as if they believed the cloth of too-tidy clothes would serve too-tidy ideas and tidy little dangerous minds.

In fact, the real draw for this band and much of its reputation is based on its live show. The band has been playing out from the 8th day of its existence when Genevieve set herself on fire by lighting her scarf at a Minneapolis New Years Eve show. Since then, they have toured Australia, the UK, Egypt, several times around the USA and are the first rock band to play Libya. In early 2005 The Heavenly States broke the occidental sound barrier when after months of negotiations they carted half their gear to Africa and played the greatest underground show of their careers in a Tripoli basement. Then, after bringing their independent music alternative to Cairo, Egypt where they performed two shows on their return to Europe, they dared to perform Rock the Casbah in London and weren't murdered on the spot.

Best to you-

Lynn

Weapons of Mass Reproduction: Bombing Ballard

First I thought this is a fake. But it is not:

Are you sick of watching women's reproductive rights slowly erode in this country? Have you bitched in the last year about how lawmakers seem to think they own your uterus? Now's the time to take action while doing what comes naturally--getting drunk!

What: 2006 Weapons of Mass Reproduction Tour: The Kocked-Up Whisky Knock-Down!
When: Friday -- October 13th -- 9PM!
Where: Meishan and Marc's Lederhousen: 2221 NW 64th Street in Ballard

Women -- We're going on a tour of Seattle bars in our best pseudo-pregnancy garb (aka big bellies).
Men -- You're coming with us. Pretend you are having sympathy pains and bloating or something...and bring us pickles.

Why: We drink to freak them out (and to entertain ourselves). Then we give them buttons and help them learn more about the educational and healthcare cutbacks that make telling pregnant women not to drink the absolute LEAST you can do to protect women and children's rights in the US.Make em think you're 20 months pregnant, girls!

Who: Here's who's RSVPd so far. Only the most awesome team of fake-preggers sex-machines ever assembled. Carey, Brianna, Meishan, Betsy, Jeff Larson Larson, Zoey, Brenna, Marc, Atom, Benni, Jon, Carol, Bevin (iffish), Girly. Tremble, Ballard. Get ready to be bombshelled!!!!!

There's room for more. Even if you're REALLY fat. I mean, pregnant.

Small But Mighty Wanderingf Pearl @ CoCA

Mndy writes:

Hello all -

I wanted to invite you to a reprise of my Bumbershoot installation "Small

but Mighty Wandering Pearl" at CoCA. Please come celebrate with me! And
please check out the lovely image attached.

Thank you, Mandy Greer

Small but Mighty Wandering Pearl: An installation by Mandy Greer

WHO: Mandy Greer
WHAT: Viewers entering Mandy Greer's installation Small But Mighty
Wandering Pearl will experience the transformative powers that materials
have on presenting graphic images. A Stag in his death throes bleeds to
death, violently ripped open -- hundreds of feet of crocheted, beaded,
stitched and knitted blood and entrails pour from his wounded flank. Our
sympathy for the dying animal is overpowered by a feeling of awe and respect
for the beauty of the scene. Greer's environment is exquisitely elegant, a
moment frozen in which we engage with that beauty instead of turning away
from the trauma, seduced by the mass of pooled blood.

Great transformations in our lives are often accompanied by a violent
killing-off of old selves, and we emerge as something new, raw and
exquisite. …I'll never forget the gush of beautiful viscera and what felt
like the joyful expelling of my own internal organs when I gave birth to my
son. Reading those entrails, I was a seer of an unknowable future." --
Mandy Greer

Yesterday I ran into Tomiko at IKEA and she reminded me on her upcoming show.
Yes, IKEA - that's where the real art is happening in Seattle these days (just kidding):

What Could It Mean To Say Yes?

A photographic installation by Tomiko Jones

What Could It Mean To Say Yes? is a photographic exploration of what
society deems an important rite of passage for a woman through the
embodied character of the bride. She is alone on this journey; the
images lead us deep into the dreamscape of the psyche. The narrative
unfolds as the question of commitment transforms: what does it mean to
say yes to oneself?

Cold Lava Report

GMP #27: Happy Birthday to Who? (Sat, 10/7/2006)

Guerrilla Masquerade Party #27
Happy Birthday to Who? To Cole! Photos & Recap

Hey Guerrillas!

Huge thanks to the many, MANY people who showed up Saturday night to
celebrate the (un)birthday of a very special (and unsuspecting) guest
of honor. For those of you who missed out on the fun, here's a little
recap...

Around 10pm, Guerrillas began filling up the Rosebud, grabbing drinks,
turning heads, and congregating throughout the bar and on the patio.
By 11pm, the place was packed with partiers. Gift bags were passed
out, a present table was set up, a cake and treat table was created,
balloons were blown up and drinks were in hand (thanks to everyone for
their patience and politeness when getting drinks).

Finally, at 11:20, we got everyone from the patio inside and gathered
facing the door. Presents were prepped, cards were pulled out, and
one very special present was brought inside and 'filled'.

With a scream of 'We're starting early!' at 11:23pm, Dirty Bunny
sparked a wave of 'Surprise!' and 'Happy Birthday' from all the
Guerrillas as one very confused young man walked in the door. Who was
our guest of honor? We soon found out:

Name: Cole
Age: 24
Hometown: Reno, NV
Favorite drink: Whiskey Ginger
Arrived: On a bike, with a date and a bag containing a towel
Left: On a bike, with 2 new girls digits, a sore ass, and a bag full
of presents
Whereabouts of date: Rumored to have taken off with a 20yo guy
Whereabouts of towel: Dirty Bunny's apartment

Upon arriving, Cole's arms were quickly filled with gifts and cards,
his mouth was quickly filled with a cupcake, and his head was capped
off with a birthday hat. We all sang "Happy Birthday", and Tatiana
the burlesque clown popped out of a giant present to give the birthday
boy a special dance. Cole also received cards, books, movies, vodka,
candles, cupcakes, candy, a camera, and 24 well-delivered bare-ass
spankings from about 1/2 dozen different hands.

Other party entertainment included a cowgirl, scads of party clowns
(Welcome back Necronomiclown! We missed you!), a Gorilla, and a
magician. Also seen among the crowd were a guy in a Birthday Suit, a
giant cake, a living toucan pinata and living pin the tail on the
donkey, and Alice in Wonderland's Unbirthday Tea Party.

It was a wild night full of laughs and suprises. We lucked out with a
very fun birthday boy who was a great sport and stuck around all night.

A lot of photos were taken, and we've begun to receive links. The
official GMP photos have been posted at
<http://www.gmpseatt le.com/gallery/>, but be sure to also check out
Tulse's photos at

See you next time, and keep the party ideas coming!
