Events from 7/15 to 7/21/2005

I am writing this week's letter from San Jose. Have you ever been to San Jose? It's not that bad. It's not that great either. Let's say, I am glad I don't have to write a Party Volcano for San Jose!

But this week San Jose is actually beating Seattle. There is a free outdoor movie event going on at San Pedro St. on Thursdays and the season for open air concerts at Market St has started.

I am downgrading Pilchuck and Celebration of Life and I don't really like Phoenix Festival. 14/48 is not a bad idea but who wants to see a play when it is nice outside? I have seen Kultur Shock about three times already, which leaves me with Noise for the Needy as my favorite.
Two events didn't make it on this week's list: There is a Burn in the Forest in B.C. (Fri-Sun) and a Salsa Cruise is taking off from Pier 55 on Sat at 10:30 PM.

14/48 @ Broadway Performance Hall

14/48
the world’s quickest theater festival
Summer 2005 festival to be held at Broadway Performance Hall
July 15-16 and July 22-23, 2005
14/48; the world’s quickest theater festival introduced Seattle to its unique brand of theater eight years ago
at the Freehold Studio on Capitol Hill. After more than 250 world premiere plays and dozens of sold-out
houses, 14/48 is moving back to Capitol Hill where the July 2005 festival will take place on the stunning
main-stage of the Broadway Performance Hall.
“We are thrilled to be co-presenting Seattle's most dynamic and original theater event” says Meg Stevenson
of the Broadway Management Group, “14/48 is the most revolutionary development to come down the
theatrical pike in a long time.”
“The new venue is awesome,” says producer Shawn Belyea. “It’s over twice the capacity we’ve been
working with, it’s high tech, it’s air conditioned, and it’s centrally located. There’s more space for artist
and audience alike. It’s an incredible move forward for the festival.”
14/48 exists to provide a safe environment for radical artistic collaboration. The concept is simple but has
proved extraordinarily successful: put some of the hottest talents in the region into a pressure cooker of
strict deadlines and randomly assembled teams, choose a theme at random, and present 14 fully produced
ten-minute plays on that theme in the next 48 hours.
The Broadway Performance Hall is located in the heart of the Capitol Hill district and features an intimate
stage with an air conditioned auditorium; easy access to Metro bus lines, I-5 and ample parking, and is
within walking distance of a variety of Seattle's best restaurants, taverns and night clubs.
This move signals the dissolution of 14/48’s seven-year producing partnership with Consolidated Works.
Recent events at the contemporary arts center have made it, in the producers’ opinion, impossible to
continue to co-produce with them, in good conscience.
“We no longer trust that Consolidated Works is a place that shares the same values that we bring to bear
with the festival.” says steering committee member Anthony Winkler, “we are moving forward with a
course of action that permits us to invite our community of collaborators to a respectful and safe venue
where they will feel empowered to work for the advancement of the art form.”
“I think we’ll look back on ConWorks as the teen years of 14/48,” adds steering committee member Carl
Sander, “where for six years we got to experiment in a very supportive home, but honestly, we were getting
too comfortable. 14/48 is exploding on so many levels. We take this as an opportunity to demand more of
ourselves artistically, and grow. But not too much, just into our early twenties.”

Pilchuck Open House

Seattle Spin writes:

Art: Pilchuck Open House, July 17th, $20, reservations required. Cut out the middleman and go straight to the source. View glassworking, wander through studios, and talk to the artists about their works and sources of inspiration. Watch glass blowers working, with cheeks like trumpet players.

Why I am mentioning it here? In order to downgrade it of course! How does "cut out the middleman" can be in a sentence with a $20 entrance fee? What the hell is an Open House with "reservations required"?

But most puzzling for me is: What does glass blowing have to do with art?

Phoenix Festival 2005

I thought they were dead:

96 hours of madness...
More madness than you can swing a stick at. But we'll not fault ya for
tryin.

Hello and welcome to another PF update, this is a special update as it's
being brought to you directly from Memphis, Tennessee, mere miles from
Graceland. And just in case you were wondering, it's hot, it's humid and
Prince is on the juke.

We're about 48 hours from the next ticket price increase. Most of y'all know
where to get your passes but just in case you've been living under a rock
for the past couple of months, you can get em online from Brown Paper
Tickets or at a variety of brick & mortar shops in the NW.

Get your BPT tickets, as well as a full list of physical locations, here:

http://www.phoenixfest.com/tickets.html

Also, in case you've not heard, we've got a couple of themecamps up on the
website. There's some folks returnin and some folks who are tryin their hand
at themecampin for the first time. It doesn't take much to do a themecamp,
just a gaggle of peeps and a creative bent and before you know it, you'll
have yourself a little spot to call home. Of course it will also likely
become home to several others and that, gentle reader, is exactly what a
themecamp is all about.

Of course, you don't have to register your themecamp, but if you do, we'll
list ya on the site and maybe even an email or two. Who knows?

You can register your camp here:

http://www.phoenixfest.com/themereg.html

That's about it for this, the deep south version of the PF update.

However, it wouldn't be a PF update if we didn't let you know that you can
learn all sorts of hand info here...

http://phoenixfest.com/essentials.html

...The PF essentials page, don't leave for the fest without readin it.

Oh yeah and the forums are back, so check em out!!

Don Volcano’s Computer Corner

Party Volcano reader Casey was not impressed by our Getto Chess so I asked him what he is clicking on these days. He replied: Well, have you educated yourself regarding nature's harmonic simultaneous 4-day time cube?

I hadn't:
