This week I have some interesting events for you: The Living Barge Project, the largest science fiction and fantasy convention in the Pacific Northwest, Seattle Flash Makeout, GMP in Portland, and "Bunny & Bowtie" Bash. It must be spring!

Also, I have heard a rumor that there will be an "imposter" wig n skirt party this weekend. Well, the real wig n skirt party will be on 5/13 - but unfortunately I am not allowed to write about it.

There are also some events that I didn't find worth mentioning: Single's Black & White Ball, Seattle's Annual Easter Swing Convention, and Bunny Bounce.

Friday 4/14

NORWESCON @ Sea-Tac Red Lion

NORWESCON kicked off on Thursday. John writes:

Norwescon is the largest science fiction and
fantasy convention in the Pacific Northwest, and it's rife with famous
authors and people in elaborate costumes, and lots of thought provoking
panels on everything from the state of the art in spaceship manufacturing
today, to how to live in open relationships... Topics like how to make
catapults, and 6000 uses for fake blood also come up, and remember that
the people ON the panels giving these talkes have somehow become
EXPERTS on those topics...

... Strictly speaking Norwescon is
a writers convention, so there will be lots of publishers there, and
since I'm working on a book about the touring business side of the rock
and roll world, they won't want to talk to me, but I figure I might get
some leads on people that will be interested in it. Thats daytime, but
the fun will really get going at night... Anyone want to come to the
party wing of the Double Tree and hang out with Boba Fett, and fairies
all in varying stages of inebriation?

Go to www.norwescon.org for more information, but think of it as a 4
day 3000 person party at the Sea-Tac Red Lion. also remember that there
is a party wing in the hotel, and thats a world unto itself. (More on
that for the Friday events.)

Roq la Rue: Once Upon a Time

Roq La Rue Gallery
Presents
“ Once Upon a Time ”
paintings and prints by Catalina Estrada
also
“ Ever After ”
new paintings by Moira Hahn, Amy Crehore, and Gretchen Ryan

Roq la Rue is thrilled to present two shows this April. Our main show is Catalina Estrada (Barcelona, Spain) in a show entitled “ Once Upon a Time”.?Born and raised in Colombia, and living in Barcelona for the past 7 years, Catalina brings all the colors and graphic power of Latin-American folklore and refines it with a subtle touch of modern sophistication. Catalina cites as her influences the lush flora and fauna found in her native Columbia as well as the rich history of music, literature, and the stories told to her there when she was young. Moving to Barcelona added bold new elements to Catalina’s work, specifically the influx of worldly culture and exposure to cross cultural influences.

One of the most important things about Catalina’s work and what sets it aside from the majority of contemporary art is that it is primarily steeped in joy. Her canvases and digital work fairly burst with ebullience yet also are restrained by a steady sharp hand and a modern appreciation of graphic boldness. When her work depicts happiness and serenity it is done without a trace of irony. Inundated with the terrible turmoil our world is experiencing now, Catalina seeks to create a small, simple paradise within her work. Using her own memories of a magical time spent in Colombia, Catalina crafts a timeless, gentle Utopia that all are welcome to participate in. And judging by the rapturous response her work evokes in others, many people do.
?Presented as a fresh and new design talent by Communication Arts and Computer Arts magazines, her work has also been featured by Die Gestalten Verlag and Graphic Magazine. She is also profiled in an upcoming issue of Swindle Magazine.

As a companion show to “ Once Upon a Time” Roq la Rue is featuring new paintings by Moira Hahn, Amy Crehore, and Gretchen Ryan in a show entitled “Ever After”. Each artist uses similar elements found in Catalina’s art in their work, although in much different ways.

Gretchen Ryan (Los Angeles) grew up at the base of the Rocky Mountains, wherein she had a magical and wild childhood and off of which she fell in a terrible car accident as a teenager.? Experiences from her youth and with disability contribute to her inspirations as a painter, as does her commitment to the oft-neglected rights of non-human animals.

Her current work explores the vulnerability of little girls, and the often-profound strengths they exhibit in the face of adversity and exploitation.

Moira Hahn (Los Angeles) returns to the gallery with her incredible watercolor paintings of animals in human predicaments. Hahn’s study of nineteenth century Japanese ukiyo-e masters Kunisada (Toyokuni), Kuniyoshi, and Zeshin inspired her to create scenes infused with sly humor and a nod to the power plays that occur in nature that echo our own human ones, all flawlessly executed in her remarkable and notoriously difficult watercolor technique.

Amy Crehore (Eugene, OR) will be exhibiting two new paintings in her well-received “Monkey Love” series. Amy creates a different kind of utopia in which lovely island girls lounge provocatively with sailor suited monkey companions in tropical idylls. Her work hints at a naughty sensuality without dipping into the profane and carries a joyous carefree innocence despite the potentially charged subject matter.

Opens Friday April 14th 6-10 pm
Show runs through May 6th

The main stage is in a heated tent. This is the 7th in a series of annual opportunities to become the faery or fool you usually hide behind the acceptable façade. Take off the mask of the materia and don your wings or crazy costume to celebrate in the woods of coastal British Columbia with the music of Adham Shaikh and many more. I play at 4:20am, and if last year is any indication, it will be a set to remember.

Seattle Flash Makeout

John writes:

Ever heard of the Seattle Flash Makeout Group? They get a large goup
together at some specific place and time, and make out for a while, and
then just as quickly as they appeared, they all dissappear.

In this installment, the Seattle Flash Makeout will commence: At: The
Seattle Center Fountain (All along the edge of it!) Exactly at:
12:11PM... (Just after noon)

The Amassing queue will come from a bullhorn: "Ladies and Gentlemen,
START YOUR ENGINES!!!" The Makeout will commence, hot and heavy, for
about 5 minutes... The Dispersing queue will come from a bullhorn: "My
ankles hurt, does anyone have a valium" Remember to keep yourselves
moving around till launch time. We want to come in from all directions
so if you are bringing your own personal smooch target try to come from
seperate directions ;-) Then upon disperse time, we will all want to
walk away like nothing happened.

Let's get alot of people this time... make plans, get friends involved!

But be warned, this event is not a secret. Seattle Spin is also recommending it:

Event: Flash Make Out, noon on April 15th. This is one of those, "Why? Well, why not?" sort of events. Everyone gets macking for a few minutes of synchronized public displays-of-affection. Kiss your sweetie in public and get those feel-good endorphins flowing. You can read an old Seattle Times article on the last event.

The Living Barge Project

What the hell is the Living Barge Project?

The Living Barge Project is a large-scale, temporary public art installation by Sarah Kavage and Nicole Kistler that is moored on Seattle's Duwamish River during April 2006. Native plants will be installed on an industrial barge, creating a temporary floating island full of ferns, shrubs and tree seedlings.

Nicole writes:

Sarah and I launched our Living Barge
Project, something that has kept us both very busy for
the last two years. Our opening was last Saturday,
April 1st, we had two boat tours and then a fantastic
party in the park. Lots of fun!!

However, you have not missed everything. There are
events happening every Saturday this month. Including
an art walk and neighborhood walk this Saturday the
8th in South Park. Local bands will be playing at the
County Line where I'll be showing some art. Check
today's Seattle Times neighborhood insert or www.livingbarge.com

This Saturday there will be a tile making workshop and a Living Barge tour:

THE REVOLUTION
WILL NOT BE
AMPLIFIED
MONDAY, APRIL 17th

spankstra 6 months reading series
a literary evening with a focus on new work

6 p.m. to 10 pm, open door

The event is FREE.
Drinks are not, but pours are generous.
Bring a friend.
Let your mind go.
The war between corporate imagery and your imagination is on.
You are the battlefield.
These are the bullets.

Dear Citizen,

spankstra press em•phat•i•cal•ly announces month 3 our 6 months reading series at Capitol Hill Arts Center on the 3rd Monday of each month.
This event will be an evening of literature with a focus on new work expressed through the medium of the spoken word. Each month will feature distinguished writers whose invitation is based on quality of work and contribution to literary arts.

We are wickedly thrilled to announce that the evening of April 17th will feature 4 of Seattle's finest writers.

Rebecca Loudon lives and writes in Seattle. She is the author of Tarantella and the soon to be released Radish King, both from Ravenna Press. Her work has appeared in numerous journals here and there, most recently, The Seattle Review, Cranky, TYPO and Forklift Ohio. She teaches violin to children and runs a poetry workshop that is in its eighth year. Rebecca recently wrote the text for Bone Island Suite, a song cycle for soprano and chamber orchestra, which will have its world premier this coming April 30, at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Seattle. She is currently writing the libretto for Red Queen, an opera about the relationship between Alice Liddell and Charles Dodgson.

R J May is the voice & words of WORDBLENDER, a powerful music/spoken-word mish-mash pouring out of Seattle. Peep www.wordblender.com for information on all of the available CDs (and click the Bleakzone Productions tab for information about May’s books). For the curious, R J May’s writing is influenced by absolutely everything he hears, reads and touches and it isn’t uncommon for May to bathe in beer in the wee hours of morning.

Doug Nufer is the author of the novels Negativeland, Never Again, and On the
Roast, all of which appeared in 2004. His novels The Mudflat Man/ The River
Boys are due out this year, in the old Ace Publishing double-fronted book
format. His poems have appeared in the magazines Chain, Monkey Puzzle, and Bird Dog, and in performances with the former spoken word trio Staggered Thirds and in forthcoming shows with a dance troupe led by choreographer Erin Mitchell.

David Christopher La Terre* is an advertising brat, artist, writer, hit-and-run orator, humorist, exfilmmaker, "asexual icon" and sentimental Modernist pursuing work in new formats, hybrids, language arts, Sound Poetry, decon, "post-mod," prank-art 'Living Satire' he has been published in the Slate, Spleen, Lost & Found Times, Rag Mag, Roar Shock & Monkeybicycle. He is the author of THE IRA PROJECT and CALL OFF YOUR DOGS, both published by Spankstra Press.
*("My favorite writer in Seattle.") --brian matarochia

In addition to the featured readers, there will be numerous open mic slots available throughout the night. Feel free to come and read your work.

Sincerely,
Chris Dusterhoff

Pay what you can: Miss America @ Theater Schmeater

But don't pay too much....

Theater Schmeater presents the World Premiere of

Miss America; A Fugue Born in 1969,

opening April 14 and running through May 20.

First heard at FringeACT as a staged reading, Miss America; A Fugue Born
in 1969 is a play about miscommunications that leads to choice, change,
and the beginning of reality.

Set amidst a WTO-style action in Seattle, this remarkable play follows the
connections and disconnections of our generation. Charlie and his friends
and neighbors cling to each other and to their beliefs, but it is a world
of much change and startling pictures of the reality they all inhabit.
This is a linguistically-beautiful play that incorporates laughter and
fear in a musical mix: in the fugue of its title.

Miss America: A Fugue Born in 1969
By Josh Beerman
Directed by Rob West

April 14 May 20, 2006 (sneak preview Thursday, April 13)
Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm

Thursdays: Pay what you can.
Friday & Saturday: $18
Under 18? Always FREE!

Theater Schmeater is located at 1500 Summit Avenue between Pike and Pine
on Capitol Hill.

This is something fairly new:

The Seattle Idiotarod

It's actually new in Seattle. But they stole the idea from Precision Accidents in NYC:

I like their news section:

Scientists find stronger evidence for link between cat faeces and schizophrenia

I know that some gangs have already formed. But I couldn't find any information on what they did.
