Events for 1/20 to 1/26/2006

This week I don't have many events for you. But the few I did find you probably won't find in the local papers. My favorite is Baldarchy.

Also, if you speak Swedish, or if you are really good at guessing Scandinavian websites, I could really need your help with the link I discuss in this week's Computer Corner.

Thanks in advance!

TIG: Best of 2005 Winners' Showcase.

Hey Party Volcano,

Three Imaginary Girls just posted the results of our Best Northwest Releases of 2005 Readers' Poll (which you can read all about right here). To celebrate some of our favorite winning releases, we're hosting a winners' showcase at Neumos. Here are all the juicy details...

Three Imaginary Girls and Sonic Boom Records Present: Best of 2005 Winners' Showcase; featuring...

* Daylight Basement
* The Pale Pacific
* Stars of Track and Field (from Portland)
* The Elephants

Friday, January 20, 2005
Doors at 8p, $8, 21+
Neumos {925 E. Pike Street}

We’d love it if you feature this on your calendar, and would love it even more if you would tell the masses about it. All three imaginary girls are available for interview, as are the bands. As an extra bonus, headliners Daylight Basement will play live on 107.7 The End at 6p on the day of the show, so you can hear them for yourself (and they also play on KEXP's Audioasis the following night, those busy rockstars!).

More information and links for each band are below. Please let me know if you would like printable images / quotes / promo CDs sent your way. And of course, say the word and I can put you and yours on the guestlist.

Thanks, all!
d. and tig

More information...

Daylight Basement
Show time: 12:30a
Best of 2005 Release and Ranking: Any Kind of Pretty {#13}
Band website / listen: www.daylightbasement.net/ {Recommended song: "Godspeed Girl"}
Daylight Basement blazed onto the field in the last minutes of 2005's 4th quarter with their game-winning, effervescent debut. Bre Loughlin come-hithers her way through jarring vocals, while new wave sugar-pop melodies muddle with murkier twinges of post-punk abrasion. And faux horns! Highly danceable, highly enjoyable, and highly recommended.

The Pale Pacific
Show time: 11:30p
Best of 2005 Release and Ranking: Urgency {#19}
Band website / listen: www.thepale.com {Recommended song: "Identify Theft"}
While changing their name to avoid a lawsuit, The Pale Pacific crafted a worthy successor to their 2002 masterpiece, Gravity Gets Things Done. Urgency is a much darker album, with denser instrumentation. "Identity Theft" — a tale of a father trying to enlist his son into a life of crime that shifts perspectives and tempo frequently — is one of the best pop songs of the year. Or any other year.

Stars of Track and Field
Show time: 10:30p
Best of 2005 Release and Ranking: You Came Here for Sunset Last Year {#5}
Band website / listen: www.starsoftrackandfield.com {Recommended song: "With You"}
With the release of their EP, this Portland, Oregon three piece have cleared the clutter of their influences and pared down to concise electro-gazer. Their brand of fuzz has a pop slant that ensconces the listener in velveteen harmonies. Confident and charismatic, we eagerly anticipate a full-length release on their new label (SideCho) in the coming year.

The Elephants
Show time: 9:30p
Best of 2005 Release and Ranking: The Elephants {#28}
Band website / listen: www.myspace.com/The_Elephants {Recommended song: "Oh Tina"}
The Elephants blend early Kinks' unabashed jangle, Echo and the Bunnymen's haunting depth, and The Magnetic Fields' hook-laden melodies. Live, The Elephants are a trio of young Tacoma lads that are both endearing and engaging live.

Baldarchy @ BalMar

Last week we pointed out this event in our Future Lava section. I find one detail a little bit weird: The location is the BalMar, which will have its grand opening event on Monday.

Depilated Evening for Bald Men, and Women Who Think Bald Guys are Totally Hot

Are you sick of being treated like a sex object just because you have no hair? Are you fed up with hot women demanding to rub their breasts on your shiny pate? Are you tired of the envious looks from men who are genetically cursed with a peculiar stringy growth on their heads?

Then this is the event for you. For one night and one night only, you can finally blend into the crowd. It's Big -- it's Shiny -- it's Beautiful -- it's Baldarchy! And it's in Ballard! (because you can't spell Ballard without Bal-d)

The Rules:
* You have to be bald.
* Or you have to be a woman who thinks bald guys are hot. Or even better, a bald woman.
* Bald means shaved to the skin, none of this candy-assed clipper crap.
* Definitely no "horseshoe" hair. We mean bald. B-A-L-D bald.
* Comb-overs are ok.
* Just kidding -- if you show up with a comb-over we will kick your ass.
* Bald on top with a ponytail in back is grounds for summary execution.

The Details:
* Show up at the correct bar on the correct night.
* Drink.

If you know any bald guys, or women who think bald guys are totally hot, please use the Invite More People link to add them to this evite. If you are not on this evite, and you qualify, please add yourself -- that way we can keep you updated on any late-breaking developments. And be sure to join the Baldarchy Tribe on Tribe.net.

No clowns, and definitely no freakin' Santas.

No clowns and Santas - I like that! I am giving this one a thumbs up!

Empty space theatre rummage sale

John writes:

The Empty space theatre is having a rummage sale. I think they are
going out of business, and are selling EVERYTHING.
This would imply costumes, props, theatre doo-dads, I'm sue theres even
a space alien there somewhere.

This is an event that I WILL be at - buying all the surplus lighting
gear.

3509 Fremont Ave N. Saturday, January 21st- 10-4 pm.

Gaia Consort's "House Concert"

John writes:

Gaia Consort is having a "House Concert" at 8:00PM. Basically, you
take a primarily acoustic band, adn pack 50 people into a living dining
room of a very large house over on the eastside, and have a show with
more energy than what you find in most nightclubs.

To describe thier music Gaia Consort says: Fans of Peter Gabriel,
Jethro Tull, CSN, Bare Naked Ladies, psychedelic rock will like what we do.
They are splitting hte bill with Sooj Tucker and you can find her at

Do you speak Swedish? Okay, I need your help with this one:

Swedish Firemen with Cats?
http://aftonbladet.se/kvinna/0011/22/21BRANDMAN.html

My best guess is that this is about winners of a contest for a Swedish Firemen calendar for cat lovers.

Not even close? Well, you tell me what it is then!
