Opulent Decay @ Roq La Rue

I am usually excited to go to their openings. But this one doesn’t really pull me in after looking at the pictures of some of the paintings (you’ll find them at www.roqlarue.com). I’ll give it a "neutral" rating:

Roq La Rue Presents
"Opulent Decay"

paintings by
Joshua Petker
Shawn Ferris
and Alice Tippet

Opens Friday March 11th 2005 6-10pm
Closes April 1st

Roq La Rue is pleased to present the work of three painters for its March show. All three painters work contains a mixture of sumptuousness mixed with a darkness, whether in subject matter or technique.

Los Angeles artist Joshua Petker originally hails from a graffiti back round, self-teaching himself about the use and appreciation of color along the way. Later he took up painting, inspired by the rich decorativism of Gustav Klimt, the awkward figurativism of Egon Schiele, and the Pop sensibility of Andy Warhol. His paintings of contemporary demi-monde, shadowy beauties struggling with dark temptations create an aura of a punk belle epoch, rendered in his own street art spin on art nouveau sensibilities with bold deep blocky color and quick graceful line work.

Seattle artist Shawn Ferris creates paintings that combine mystery and humor. Using classic archetypal images such as crowns, eggs, and snakes, she adds her own interpretations and characters to the tableau, such as boxing and gambling bird chicks. Her technique fuses loose backgrounds that look aged and weathered with subject matter rendered in a crisp, meticulous manner.

Alice Tippet also lives in Seattle and is known for her spin on traditional watercolor painting. Inspired from everything from the natural world, “red in tooth and claw”, to the illusional aspects of civilization, often depicted using imagery culled from colonial times or British royalty. At first her paintings draw the viewer in with a soft palette and gentle images only to reveal upon closer inspection a departure from idealistic imagery that straddles the line between truth and the macabre.

Roq La Rue.

Animation and Live Action @ NWFF

Animation and Live Action, Fri-Thurs at 7, 9pm
Seven 2005 Academy Award Nominated short animation and live action films in one program (88 min.)

ANIMATION:

BIRTHDAY BOY - Too young to realize the consequences, a little Korean boy plays at war while his father fights at the front. In Korean with English subtitles.

RYAN - WINNER, BEST SHORT FILM – ANIMATION - Ryan Larkin, one of the most influential figures in Canadian animation, now lives on skid row following years of drug and alcohol abuse. A startling, innovative mix of animation and documentary.

GOPHER BROKE - A hungry gopher devises a scheme that he hopes will provide him with a tasty snack.

LIVE-ACTION:

TWO CARS, ONE NIGHT - As they wait for their parents in the parking lot of a motel bar, two boys and a girl begin a tentative friendship.

7:35 IN THE MORNING - A woman enters the café where she has breakfast every morning and finds that all of the other diners are staring at their plates in silence. In Spanish with English subtitles.

WASP - WINNER, BEST SHORT FILM - LIVE ACTION - Zoe is twenty-three years old and already the mother of four children. A chance meeting with an old flame offers her a temporary escape from her bleak life.

LITTLE TERRORIST - When a young Pakistani boy accidentally crosses the mine-strewn border into India in pursuit of his cricket ball, he is helped by a Hindu teacher. In Hindi with English subtitles.

Every week NWFF sends out their long Digest, which is - to be frank – a pain in the butt if you want to extract some quick event facts. They use 4 colors and the content is all chatty but then in the end they miss to mention their address. CoCA used to send out those types of "confused" emails but they got better. Howard House makes the same mistake of sending "press release novels" instead of short announcements but not without their own flavor of extra inefficiency: You get their press releases three weeks before the event with no reminder.
Before I make myself guilty of not getting to the point in an appropriate manner, let me just tell you the short story of all this:

You need to get the address and details from www.nwfilmforum.org

"Battle for Chile" at ConWorks

While ConWorks is looking for new leadership (after firing Matt Richter two weeks ago) they continue their program. Larry is pointing out three events: "Battle for Chile", "BRENT OR BRENDA?" (Re-bar, Thurs-Sun at 8:00, $12 if you mention Party Volcano), and FADE (ConWorks, 3/18, $15).From those three suggestions I liked "Battle for Chile", the best. Here is Larry’s comment:

Not sure if I've often seen movie screenings in your listings, but this one merits attention because it's rarely screened. It looks at the revolution in Chile on 9/11/1973 (no, the symbolism of 9--11 didn't start three years ago, but over twenty.) It's a rare situation where a filmmaker documented all the events leading up to General Augusto Pinochet's (known mostly to Americans through Sting's song "They Dance Alone", of course) hostile dictatorship. As interesting as the film is the fate of the director and crew: after the coup they were all detained and tortured, and the brilliant cameraman Jorge Muller was "disappeared". Years later his grave was found. The director was subjected to mock executions while in custody.

"Battle for Chile" at ConWorks. Fri and Sat at 8:00.
Opens on Fri, Mar 11 -- two days only. $7

Loft party – please RSVP.

Another generous private party invitation:

Hey Party Volcano,
I hope we haven't missed the deadline to get this to you. It is a
"private residence", but we feel we can accommodate a large crowd. I
thought that Party Volcano members would be interested in this event
hosted by a couple artists from T-K So here goes:

Spring is in the air...winter quarter is ending...it's the beginning of
another weekend...the close of a phase...the start of a new era...and
someone has a big enough space for everyone to dress up, drop in, and
drink well.

Andrew Buckles is hosting a cocktail party!
Start your Friday night with us, and see where it takes you...

When: Friday, March 11, 8 pm – Midnight.
Where: [Please RSVP to spazbot@gmail.com and you’ll receive the details.]

Cocktail attire suggested, creative attire encouraged. Artwork by
Andrew Buckles. Please bring your favorite spirit for our co-op bar.

Hors d'oeuvres provided, but we welcome your delicious snacks as well.

Please feel free to announce this shindig to your appropriate list.

See your there!

Please RSVP Michael at spazbot@gmail.com if you want to get on the guest list. I am excited that I am able to mention private parties again.

Let me throw in a little bit of background information here: Right now there are about 1600 people on the PV list. C.D.O. Andrew and I once estimated that "only" up to 10% will show up at private parties after they read about them in our weekly letter. When we had 40 readers the maximum damage to be expected were 4 party crashers vomiting in the garden. If our rule of thumb calculation still holds then hosts of private parties should expect up to 160 new guests (not all of them will vomit on the carpet, though).

I think Evites or email RSVPs give you good control over the guest list. I would like to encourage you to send in invitations to your parties as long as you can keep control over the guest list!

DJ DaLua at Noc Noc

Planet Beat Presents:

DJ Marcelinho DaLua, from the award winning Brazilian Electronic group
BossaCucaNova www.bossacucanova.com will be playing at Noc Noc (1516 Second Ave.) on Friday,
March 11.

DJ DaLua is a carioca (native of Rio de Janeiro), and a leading figure
in the sound of new Brazilian music; an artist who is firmly rooted in
the great bossa nova tradition, but also awarded "Best Electronic CD
2004" and "Best Electronica Video Clip 2004" in prestigious music
competitions.

DaLua formed the project BossaCucaNova with Marcio Menescal and
Alexandre Moreira. BossaCucaNova has released 3 records, and the group
has been nominated for the Latin Grammy Awards in Los Angeles. Outside
Brazil BossaCucaNova has sold approximately 100 thousand records and
done four global tours, two of them with the special appearance of
Roberto Menescal, one of the fathers of bossa nova.

In early 2003 DaLua made his first international solo tour, playing at
SummerStage in New York City and also in San Francisco.
His style features a unique mix of drum n' bass, reggae/dub, bossa,
dance and Brazilian styles that is absolutely irresistible. Acclaimed
by the press and by the packed dance floors, Marcelinho DaLua has
proven himself a true world class DJ.

Darek Mazzone (KEXP, KUOW) will open and host the show.

This is a rare opportunity for Seattle and the NW to experience
Brazilian Club Culture at its finest. Truly not to be missed!

Kozy Kino - Last and Final Call

Yes, now I am simply being gratuitously wishy-washy and irritating.

I previewed True Stories last night and it does not hold me with its charm
as it once did when I was freshly exiled from living in Texas. So, it has been
nixed in favor of a film a bit more compelling and less viewed. I still recommend
people see True Stories if they have not already, in their own time and own dime.

So, yes folks! We are back to surprises! But I give you one hint…
see the Drink Special

Drink Special: this drink will attempt to approximate the essence of Key Lime Pie
but without the potential for gluttony which this film’s subject exhibits magnificently.

For those not yet in the know….

The Kozy Kino is a new underground cinema that infuses diverse film programming
with thematic beverage service. Every second and fourth FRIDAY evening,
we throw down the homemade cushions, fire up the video beamer and
concoct delicious refreshments to wash down the freshly popped corn.
Each featured film is a forgotten wonder of cinema… coupled with shorts
and inspirational drink specials. It’s a cheap night of uninstitutionalized
quality entertainment and a fine example of underground economy.

The Kozy Kino is located at 1809 Minor Ave. (between Stewart and Howell) right
around the corner from the Rebar. It is also somebody’s loft space but don’t
let that put you off. Although it’s an intimate experience (read: seating is
limited), it’s the sort of thing that this town needs more of (e.g. the speakeasy,
the peoples’ kitchen, the Sunday sermon, the peoples' underground surgical theater, etc.).

Help breathe some life into this 'theme park of a city' now and start your own!

Kozy Kino, 1809 Minor Ave, 9pm, $1.

Vegfest 2005 @ Seattle Center

Seattle Spin has a positive spin on everything:

Food: Vegfest, March 12th - 13th, Seattle Center, $5. An exhibition blasting the stereotypes: vegetarian food is either bland, takes a lot of work to cook, or is for chicks who don't shave their pits. If you wanna go vegatarian, but finding it difficult or don't know what to do, start here. Like, there's only so many different ways you can put together beans and salads, so expand your recipe book.

After receiving only one angry email about my Tsunami comment two weeks ago I feel encouraged to express another non-liberal-pc opinion in the context of Vegfest 2005: Many vegans just look sick.

This will probably offend a bunch of our readers but I’ll tell you my little story anyways. My friend Sean and I went to Mexico last year and had a great time. One of our daily activities was sitting outside at a restaurant at Oaxaca’s Zocalo, read, drink lemonade, and watch people.

After a while you naturally develop theories about people you don’t know but you feel comfortable judging them by just the way they dress and walk. "That guy is getting a divorce" I would suggest and Sean would sometimes disagree with "No, he is just drunk". But we were never in disagreement about vegans. It was a sunny day in Mexico, music everywhere, kids begging for money, a lively place with spots of white, pale, and miserable looking tourists, that seemed to be uncomfortable with hot weather and around burritos.
I would say: "That couple looks sick..."
Sean would always agree: "Let’s buy them a steak!"

So if you are a vegan and look healthy (as defined as "not looking like a cancer patient"), please send a picture to partyvolcano@yahoo.com .
Sean and I would love to buy you a carrot at the Vegfest!

BRIDES OF MARCH

Of course GMP likes it:

We've received the official itinerary for this Saturday's BRIDES OF
MARCH event, and it's going to be a great day full of fun activities:
Bull Riding, Mountain Climbing, Gay Bingo, Pool Playing, Lingerie
Shopping, and of course, Drinking. What more could you want to do in
a wedding dress? Heck, what more could you want to do NOT in a
wedding dress?

Here are the details:

It's that time again, girls! Time to don the wedding whites and take 'em out on the town. This year we'll be marrying the fabulous Pinnacle at REI, described as "one of the tallest freestanding indoor climbing walls in the world"! We've also got Bull Riding, Gay Bingo, Pool, and Hooters! Why, it's a white trash wedding! (Except for the Gay Bingo.)
We've got less walking on our route this year, so bring change for the bus. And remember, it's A.O.K. to wear long johns under your gown. Can't find a cheap enough wedding gown? How about a prom dress? Or a white sheet?

And if you're dying to go out in drag, but just can't make the date, I strongly recommend Cross Dress Bowling, an art-car fundraiser, held at Sunset Lanes on Sunday, March 13.

The Itinerary:
(Always subject to last minute change, so call if you're joining us late.)

* 12p Gameworks (C'mon and ride the bull, gals!)
1511 7th Ave
* 1p Convention Center (Processional at the Skybridge!)
800 Convention Pl
* 2p Shopping @ Pine Street
(all the usual fabulous places: Bon Macy's, Nordstroms, Pacific Place)
* 4p Dragonfish (It's happy hour!)
722 Pine Street
* 5p REI (Bring clothes for climbing!)
222 Yale Ave N
* Bus Ride!
MT70: Fairview & John -> Fairview & Valley
* 6p Buca Di Beppo (This is a full dinner break. Because what goes better with white gowns than red sauce?)
701 9th Ave N
* 7:30p Gay Bingo (I'll say it again: GAY BINGO.)
South Lake Union Naval Reserve Building
860 Terry Ave N
* 8:30p Castle Superstore (For all your nuptial needs.)
613 Fairview Ave N
* 9p Hooters
901 Fairview Ave N
* 10p Jillian's Billiard Club (Everybody in the pool!)
731 Westlake Ave N
* Bus Ride!
MT 5 or 358: Aurora & Broad -> Aurora & John
* 11p EMP Liquid Lounge (Let's dance the night away!)
325 5th Ave N
* Midnight
Time to turn into a pumpkin!

Save The Taxi

This is my favorite for this week:

The taxi is sick... very sick. The gas tank is rusted out, and unfortunately it has taken the carburetor with it. We've made it through worse... remember when the transmission died? Problem is, I'm cutting back my hours at work so I can start massage school, and the $1500 needed to get the cab running isn't so easy to come by these days. Yes ladies and gentleman, Seattle's favorite free taxi service is in danger of going the way of the Kalakala.

We are going all out with this. We are soliciting live entertainment (bands and such)! This is going to be an all day event so you can either come during the day for the BBQ/Carnival, or late to just PARTY! Add your friends, and also, please check out the Save The Taxi website for other ways to help out.

Hay Everyone!!
M-Set is playing in Freemont Saturday at the High Dive

For anyone who doesn't know them they are a quirky
little rock band That has the melodic driving rock
sound of the Foo Fighters, combined with the quirky
alternative rock of The Presidents, topped off with
charming vocal and personal presence.

John (the Lighting Designer) has his own little music event list (John_Schlick@Hotmail.com). He recommends them too:

Girl Powder (supporting Mamafest) @ Sunset Tavern

I feel sorry for Mamafest (and all those folks who optimistically bought a season ticket for Stephens Pass, Snoqualmie, or Crystal Mountain), who are still planning to have a fundraiser on 3/19. I really doubt that there will be snow. But their attitude is admirable: "The snow must go on!"

Hey everybody!

Ok 2 things –

1) Mamafest is still happening*
and
2) Our friends at Girl Powder are throwing a party at the Sunset Tavern in Ballard to help us raise money**

*Let’s chat about The Sunset event. It’s Wednesday, March 16th in beautiful downtown Ballard, Seattle, Washington USA. It’s 5 bucks, there will be plenty of specials and stuff to give away, plus some excellent local women showcasing their skills in a music extravaganza. Check out the attached flyer. Please join us.

**Ok, next - Mamafest 05’ is officially still crackin for Saturday March 19th. Yes that is correct. So all of you that haven’t had enough of this awesome summer, err, we mean winter, please come out and support the event.

You are all probably wondering…no snow? No demo? Correcto! The ladies at Mamafest and the UW Medicine would appreciate the support, say good bye to “winter”, and hellllloooooo summer!

To add to the mood - set up your tents, grab your hibachi’s, coolers, and sun glasses, to keep your bellies full and your skin protected while you watch people rip and wreck themselves on the Disneyland Mama-Jam jib-tastic jib fest! ($35 entrance fee for competitors and all money goes to Mamafest – cash and check only day of but if you want to preregister by credit card make a donation on our site for $35)

We’ll be selling raffle tickets, giving away tons of stuff, while enjoying some excellent music and watching the competition. Leuko, thejohnbenders and Martian Memo to God will be rockin out along with some local djs.

Every year Mamafest continues to exceed its own expectations of fun and funds raised for breast cancer research. This year is no different. The Disneyland Mama-jam will consist of many rails, boxes, booters (kind of) and wall rides. Live music for your musical entertainment, libations and lots of girls in bikini tops to show everyone just what we are fighting for!

JOIN US SATURDAY MARCH 19TH.
COMPETITION STARTS AT 10
AFTERPARTY AT 3 ON THE MOUNTAIN!
SUMMIT AT SNOQUALMIE (SUMMIT CENTRAL)

Girl Powder, The Sunset, $5

"echoes" - Opening @ the Tashiro Kaplan Building

This will be a good show!

Hi Friends,
Please come by echoes a project that the students of the installation
art class I teach at the UW have been working on.
Last year 's class took over under-detected spaces at the Capitol Hill
Arts Center (http://www.thestranger.com/2004-03-25/artnews.html)
This year's students have an over 3,000 sq. ft. store front, warehouse
space.
They've put together innovative work and an amazing first show!

Best, Susan

taken from your iPod, or MP3 player.

At PLAYLIST we invite the suave and sybaritic to play a 15- minute set from
their iPod or digital music player. It’s easy and fun! You sign up on the
board and watch for the clock to tic down. Then you take the iBooth and
show’em what you’ve got.

So come and bring your own mixes, your own music, bring your mash-ups, your
old & new New Wave, your Misfits, Neil Diamond, house, hip-hop, soul or even
fucking Creed. Anything goes, but bad songs.... get the gong, courtesy of “I
Heart Rummage’s” Matthew Parker, PLAYLIST host and Mirabeau Room Cocktail
ingenue.

How can you resist? It’s free. It’s Happy Hour. Half Price Apps, $2.50
wells, $2.50 Micro and Import Drafts, $1.50 Domestic Drafts.

You create your Night.

Don Volcano’s Computer Corner

Last week I discovered www.losers.org and felt that what they are doing is pretty mean. If I dedicated a web page to the "less skilled" folks on this planet I would model it after The Darwin Awards – a classic.

The Darwin Awards salute the improvement of
the human genome by honoring those who accidentally
kill themselves in really stupid ways.

Last year’s winner (Death by Lava Lamp) is – sorry 'was' - from the Northwest, which brought the Darwin Award back to our neighborhood after winning in 1998:

Misadventure at the Metallica Concert (1998)

I couldn’t help browsing around and decided that this one is also worth mentioning:

Jet Assisted Take-Off (1995)

Until next week,

Don Volcano.
