Events from 12/1 to 12/7/2006

Sorry I missed sending out the PV letter last week. I got stuck in Thanksgiving traffic. Either way, Thanksgiving is behind us now. But the season of obsessive cooking is not over. That's why I will present a video about a German Nazi cooking show in this week's computer corner.

POLYPHONIC blowout extravaganza finale @ CHAC

Hello friends,

I know I just sent out an email on Monday, but I have a very important
announcement. I'm sad to say that this Friday will be the LAST Polyphonic!
(at CHAC anyways) Last weekend I was contacted by CHAC management to inform
me that they wanted to move Polyphonic to another night. Unfortunately where
they wanted to reschedule me was not compatible with my work schedule and
other activities, so I made the desicion to end the night this week. It was
almost a year ago when I started this little monthly fiasco at thee Lower
Level. We called it Broken Disco for the first couple months and it was a
ramshackle haphazard affair that, when everything was running properly was
an absolute blast! The first few months were rough, ironing out the
technical bugs at the CHAC, but we finally got it running smooth last spring
and summer. Overall it was a fun night and we had some amazing performers
and artists from around the Northwest come through in the time we were
there, so what better way to go out, than with a debauchery infused,
whiz-bang, rootin-tootin, psychedelic,
super-califragilistic-expe-ala-dope-shit, fun time party!!!

This Friday (Dec 1st), sub-merge presents thee final POLYPHONIC blowout
extravaganza finale!!
The line-up is the same as before (check the link for details) but I'm
making it ridiculously easy to get in free.

So here's the deal:
If you've ever performed or displayed art at Polyphonic, you get in FREE!
If I've ever approached you about playing or displaying art at Polyphonic,
you get in FREE!
If you've ever loaned me gear or helped work the door at Polyphonic, you get
in FREE!
If you can name every HEADLINER that's performed at Polyphonic since last
Febuary, you get in FREE!
If you've ever lived with me, or are currently living with me, you get in
FREE!
If you have a clubvibes.com VIP card, you get in FREE!
If you show up wearing any of the following t-shirts: Uniting Souls,
Innerflight, Decibel, Oracle Gatherings, Shameless, Krakt, Laptop Battle,
Tekgnosis, or something with a picture of a Roland TB303 on it, you get in
FREE!

So there it is kids, if you can't figure out a way to get in free off that
list than just pay cover (it's only $5) and have one of your friends that
got in free buy you a drink. Also, if you'll be taking in other activities
earlier in the evening but still want to catch a little bit of thee fun
before it's gone, there will be no cover after 1am, and remember that we go
until 3am!!
You can come on down, get in free, have about an hour to get your drink on,
then another hour to dance it off! (we may be taking the party elsewhere as
well after we close up CHAC, but we'll cross that bridge Friday night)
Speaking of drinks, I know there will be some kind of drink special
happening, I just don't know what it is right now.
So if you've never been to Polyphonic at thee Lower Level before, this is
your last chance. If you've been, but it's been a while, swing by one last
time, If you make it almost every month, I know I'll see you there, and if
you just need an excuse to go out and dance, here it is!!

I want to send my deepest and sincerest gratitude out to all those who
performed, played, displayed, and helped out to make this night happen every
month. There was alot ov elements that conspired to pull it off and I'm
grateful for every one of you. Thanks to vj Aldorithim for holding down the
eye candy on a regular, much love brotha! Thank you to all thee CHAC
bartenders and staff (don't forget to tip, you did get in free, after all)
Thank you to Dan and Yvette for starting Broken Disco with me last winter.
Thanks to the CHAC managment for believing in the night, I'm sorry I can't
keep it going there.
It's been alot ov fun, and there's more yet to come. As I mentioned in
Monday night's email, I'll be keeping busy this winter covering various
residencies with the Innerflight and Uniting Souls crews and working with
Michael Manahan, the "Feather Hats" and friends on the new monthly residency
at the Fenix called Chrome Toast. Anyway, enough ov this blather...

Lotz ov Love,
sEth (dj MANOS)

SANTARCHY

Happy Holidays, Guerrillas!

You better not shout, you better not cry, cuz the streets will be
filling with SANTAS next month as SANTARCHY returns. The annual
running of the Santii is coming up soon, so get started gathering
those red suits and white beards now.

Seattle, WA - Saturday, Dec. 2
Portland, OR - Saturday, Dec. 9
Bellingham, WA - Friday, Dec. 15
Vancouver, BC - Saturday, Dec. 16
Seattle & Portland Hardcore Santa redux - Saturday, Dec. 23

Santarchy is NOT a GMP-organized event. In fact, we have to miss the
December 2nd event due to other commitments in other states. For that
reason, we'll be unable to keep you abreast of all the plans and
meeting spots and details this year... or at least those that aren't
available before Thanksgiving. So if you want to be part of this
brilliant, fun, crazy tradition, PLEASE join the other 500+ folks on
the Seattle Cacophony mailing list:
http://groups. yahoo.com/ group/seattlecac ophony/?yguid= 138667763

For more info on Santarchy, check out the GMP web site:
http://www.gmpseattle.com/

And speaking of numbers... did anyone else notice GMP's approaching
1000 members? Now if only we can all be at the same place at the same
time in costume!

Stay tuned for an official GMP event, coming soon to an unsuspecting
location near you. And those of you who go to SANTARCHY this year:
We expect you to drink plenty of tainted nog for us.

BYOP (Bring Your Own Projector) @ Alibi Room

Hello PV,

Alibi Room has a new owner who's hired me to host art events, so I've started a weekly projector invitational: http://www.zverina.com/byop.htm

All are invited to bring projectors and reels of art films, home movies, found footage, whatever. The idea is to have several projections going simulataneously, either side by side or overlapping. It's pretty much a free-for-all.

Guest DJs or performers provide soundtrack. Half the fun is watching music inadvertently synchronize with imagery.

Participants bring projector(s) and reels. Alibi provides screens, music, one digital projector for DVD shorts, and screaming drink specials. (Right now it's $2 Tecates and $1 tequila shots.)

Show rolls EVERY MONDAY from 6 - 10 pm ...or longer if there's momentum. We've done it twice already and it's tended to go late.

So, maybe this is something good for PV?

Also, on a more personal note but too late for PV:

I'll be projecting recent European shorts at an Alibi Room dance party Wednesday night (11/22). DJ Heavy from 9-12, Shapeshifter from midnight - 2. Whisky specials. I think maybe Wild Turkey in honor of Thanksgiving but I'm not sure...

4... 3... 2... 1... Monday Movie Madness
BYOP (Bring Your Own Projector) weekly film invitational. DOWNSTAIRS. 6 - 10 pm (or later if momentum is high). Drink specials pick up where upstairs Happy Hour leaves off. Bring your own projector and reels. Art films, home movies, found footage, all welcome. Or just come down to watch. Questions? Call Rob: 206 390 5435

Riddled @ PUNCH

Howard Barlow: Riddled

Dec 7 - Dec 31, 2006
Hours: Noon-5 pm, Fri-Sun,
or by appointment: art@punchgallery.org

PUNCH presents new sculptural work by Howard Barlow. In his previous work, looking at conflicting stereotypes of small-town eastern Washington and small-town USA in general, Barlow sought to incorporate perceived truths, or evidence of actions believed to be common small town activities, with contrasting culturally-ingrained notions of idyllic small American towns as safe places to live.

Continuing with complementary and contrasting mediums, Barlow’s current body of work, Riddled, draws from America’s gun, entertainment, and safety/protection culture. With combinations of bullet-marked steel boxes, safety colors, foam earplugs, hunter-discarded deer parts, and related objects, Barlow’s paradoxical and peculiar work bridges the gap between amusing and intimidating. Drawing from the concept of psychic automatism as implemented by abstract expressionists, especially Jackson Pollock, Barlow’s bullet-riddled sculptures similarly exist illusion free, referencing a collective, rather than an individual, American subconscious.

Howard Barlow lives east of the Cascades in the small rural town of Thorp where he has converted an old firehouse into a live/work space. He currently instructs art at both Columbia Basin College and at Central Washington University.

Mexican Votive/Retablo Paintings @ Form/Space Atelier Gallery

Hello friends and comrades,

Here is a show I am very excited about, I hope you attend.

Mexican Votive/Retablo Paintings
From the three Vilchis brothers,
Hugo, Daniel and Luis, from Mexico City.

Along with the paintings that I recently brought back I will be showing some
photographs from my recent trip. You can read more about the artists and their
work below.

This gallery is curated by Paul Pauper.
It will be a catered event, with live music.

Preview the paintings:
http://sedora.com/MXretablos2006/

The work:
These colorful paintings on tin come from the 500-year-old tradition of votive
paintings, ex-vos or retablos. They are traditionally commissioned in trade for
services, to tell the miraculous tale and give thanks to the intervening saint
for answered prayers, miracles. They depict lifeââ'¬â"¢s nearly-tragic stories and the realities of survival, with humor, honesty and charm. In the
modern day Mexico these thwarted mishaps might include drug or alcohol abuse,
bus accidents, drunkenness, collapsing scaffolding, street brawls, dog bites,
infidelity and jealousies. The works here blend traditional Mexican popular art
with contemporary themes like homosexuality, emigration, and urban violence.

The artists:
Hugo Aledo, Daniel Alonso, and Luis Angel Vilchis are sons of the well-known
contemporary self-taught painter Alfredo Vilchis Roque. They live in a working
class barrio in Mexico City, and have learned the trade and tradition from their
father, whose work is well known and frequently exhibited internationally. Their
work has been shown, along with their fathers, in Mexico City, Paris, Miami and
Chicago.

Hope to see you there

Best wishes,
Sedora DeBondt

Don Volcano's Computer Corner.

I got this one from a friend in Germany:

Die deutsche Kochschau
(The German Cooking Show)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGPGSyCreJA

I think the video is mildly amusing - even if you don't know what they are talking about. Those two guys are Nazis mixing up cooking ingredients with names of old Nazi politicians.

The interesting part is that you wouldn't see this on German TV, because it would be considered as tasteless. This show was actually broadcasted in Austria. They seem to think that they have anything to do with the Third Reich. Maybe Austria's public opinion is that they were invaded by the Germans. Invaded by German led by a Fuehrer, who was born in Austria.

Bon appetite!
