Yumiko Kayukawa & Moira Hahn @ Roq la Rue

Roq la Rue Gallery
Presents

Yumiko Kayukawa
“Beast From The East”

new paintings
and
Moira Hahn
“Sunset Serenade”

new paintings

Opening THIS Friday November 11th 6-10pm

with live music by the Buttersprites
runs through December 3rd

Roq La Rue is pleased to present two artists who both create a fusion of both western and Asian pop and classical influences in their work.

Yumiko Kayukawa “Legend Of Mermaid”

Yumiko Kayukawa was born in the small town of Naie in Hokkaido, Japan.(She now resides in Seattle.) The panoramic beauty of her surroundings and feelings of communication with the native animals inspired her to paint the things around her. As a teenager she also fell in love "with the energy and giddiness" of American pop-culture through her exposure to rock n' roll, film, and fashion. By the age of 16, she had debuted into the art world with a comic-book (Manga) feature.

Yumiko has since made a name for herself with shows around the globe as well as high profile ad campaigns featuring her candy bright pop paintings of fashionable young women, animals, and traditional Japanese motifs. Yumiko's work blends fashion illustration, sharp iconic graphics, and meticulously rendered flora and fauna to create images that evoke a dreamy and enigmatically erotic tone. Far from the bold sexuality of Hentai (anime porn) the girls in Yumiko's paintings are mysterious and elusive, using images of both innocence and fetishes in a sexy, subtle way, yet are always engaging the viewer with direct eye contact. The fantasy of these dream girls is mixed with the realistic depictions of the natural world...insects, birds and animals are always present, bringing a sense of the messy real world and boundless life force crashing joyfully into the lives of these pristine icy beauties. Traditional Japanese flower motifs and kanji characters used in an untraditional way round out the compositions creating a jolting, modern tone to the paintings.

Moira Hahn lives in Los Angeles. For this show, a body of work emerged from Hahn’s observation of the natural world, particularly the behavior of birds in her backyard and a host of feral cats that lurk nearby. Hahn’s study of nineteenth century Japanese ukiyo-e masters Kunisada (Toyokuni), Kuniyoshi, and Zeshin inspired her to create scenes in which the birds attempt to level the playing field. In “Revenge of the Tori”, for example, an atelier of vigilant birds print “Wanted” posters of neighborhood cats. Her use of watercolor, a traditionally difficult medium, is flawless and captures the tone of early Ukiyo-e paintings juxtaposed with subtle modern references.

In addition, Moira will be showing paintings from a series of work explores that her interest in the long term ubiquity of anime and manga in Japan and the US, and inspired her to replace deities in swirling hypnotic scenes of other dimensions with cartoon icons such as Doraemon and Atom Boy, from Japanese cartoons.

Currently, Hahn is a Full Time Assistant Professor of Art at Santiago Canyon College, in Orange, California. She received an Art Matters Fellowship for visual art in 1992. She has also been awarded an artist grant (Art Alliance/Tribute Fund, 1997) and full tuition scholarship in 1998 from California State University, Fullerton, where she completed her Master of Fine Arts Degree in 2000. Hahn has exhibited extensively throughout the United States and has had two solo exhibitions in Japan. Her work can be seen in collections of the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts, in San Francisco; the National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC; the Oakland Museum; the Smithsonian Institution; and UCLA Medical Center.

Artists' Receptions at Fancy, Schmancy and Pants
Friday, November 9th. Reception from 6-8pm

At SCHMANCY: Artist: Meredith Dittmar
Materials: polymer clay, love
Meredith Dittmar has created over ten thousand completely UNIQUE "guys" that have been successfully adopted in the last 10 years. Along with her 3d "doodles" she creates larger hung environments inspired by nature, the subconscious, and the various diverse music scenes she has participated in over the years.

At PANTS: Artist: Alexi Maczka
Materials: Mixed-media paintings (acrylic paint, ink & paper on wood)
Alexi Maczka spent his childhood in Pittsburgh , PA. As a youngster, his creative appetite was well fed; when not partaking in E.L.C. (Extreme Lego Construction), Alexi was attending Saturday Art classes at Carnegie Museum. Decades later, after earning his degree in Studio Art, Alexi settled in Oakland, CA to work as an Art Teacher while further developing his painting skills. Now living in Seattle, Alexi can usually be found out in his studio making art--"My creative process is a bit chaotic and obsessive, yet satisfying. I construct/deconstruct, cut/paste, paint and scrape away until I am content (or just exhausted). Things that inspire me: weathered signage, kitsch, odd juxtapositions, pop culture, and other stuff."

The Builders Association @ On the Boards

Sara writes:

Hi Party Volcano – We wanted to tell you all about the return of the hi-tech theater group The Builders Association to Seattle. They played to sold out houses at OtB in 2004 with their show Alladeen, and we are excited to bring them back.

Their new show SUPERVISON looks at the strange and sometimes creepy issues of data surveillance. It’s a wildly hi-tech show that uses digital animation, video, architecture, electronic music and trained actors to examine the evolving complexity of living in a world where almost every activity can be digitally tracked, from ATM withdrawals and online purchases to obsessive internet research.

So far, this show has been getting great reviews……“Super Vision ranks as one of the most fascinating and rewarding multimedia theater works in years.” – The Columbus Dispatch (Nov 2005)

Hmm, 24 smackers. That's too risky for me.

Luvin' on Eleven,Eleven @ Chop Suey

This event made it on The Stranger's suggests list as well as the Weekly's pick for dance and it is also one of my two favorite events for this week. Every time I meet Wazhma she says: That will be my last event for a while. But the next email in my inbox is another interesting event.

How did it happen this time? One day the owner of Chop Suey came into her store (Retail Therapy) to buy a present for his wife and recognized her as the host of the fashion show at Barca a while ago. He asked her whether she wanted to host a show and she said yes.

Here are some interesting details: It's a hidden fundraiser for Kick - a project that tries to stimulate Seattle's dance scene (see www.kickseattle.org for the schedule). I asked her why she didn't promote it as a fundraiser and Wazhma said: "There have been too many fundraisers lately. People get tired of hearing about them. They want to go to a show and just have fun." I think she is right and the local Bollywood Mafia should follow her example.

Kara O'Toole is involved in Kick and she will perform a funny dance piece called "Jesus loves the little cowgirls" to a cheesy Patsy Kline song.

DJ Pierre (who also happens to be a co-worker of mine) will surprise you with some underground hip-hop tracks that you have never heard.

What else? I can't remember. But I think that's already be worth the ten bucks for a good cause.

I love Lucky numbers.... On Friday 11/11 ;) I have had my elbow twisted into doing a dance night. So come out! come out for Luvin' on eleven eleven( a bit of a tongue twister)

I am always hearing about dating debacles and the few good places to meet new people in general... WELL I JUST DON"T BUY IT. I know some amazing people... so I figure I best put all my fabulous friends together for one night to BOOGIE DOWN.

This is also the kick off week to "kick" and "Solid" a week long dance off bringing the dance community together. And you know I am ALL about that. So this time they are my pick for a non-profit to support. http://www.kickseattle.org

"Real" "Art" @ Sessions Gallery

Bob writes:

I have some new work in this show, in this show of cartoons
about art and the art world, along with cartoonists Peter
Bagge and David Laskey, Megan Kelso, Jeremy Eaton, and Greg
Stump.

In "Fear of Art," a rumpled, detective takes on the "seemy
art underworld" in this homage to film noir movies that is
equal parts Dashiell Hammet and Robert Crumb. Turning the
genre on its head, and poking fun at the art world, our
detective follows a trail leading from gallery attendants
all the way to curators and collectors, and discovers
corruption that would make Bogie blanch.

Oh, and it's funny!

I've attached the first page of a four part strip from the
show to give you more of an idea.

Hope to see you there.

Roundtrip @ The Diller Hotel

Sean (a.k.a. Nordic Soul) writes:

I'll be DJing this Saturday, Nov. 12th at the Diller (artist loft space next
to the S.A.M.). I've DJed several of the Diller parties in the past and
they're frickin' crazy (in a very good way). There's always plenty of booze,
costumes, sex, art, music and dancing (if any of these things appeal to
you). These parties usually go pretty late so feel free to swing by after
the bars let out and bring anyone you want (after party!!!).

I am not 100 percent sure whether this is a public party. But I take the risk. This is a very rare opportunity to let you know about an important place in Seattle's party scene. The Diller used to be a hotel - the Diller Hotel. Now it is only an apartment building but every once in a while the habitants decide to have a party. Their parties are always great. The music is good, the bar is good, the crowd is good. You should go. (If you do go please don't insult the hosts by showing up in outfit that is not related to the air travel theme. Hey, why not going as a hijacker?)

>>>ROUNDTRIP is a chance to support your friends, Capt'n Evan and his
>>>Co-pilot Jason, as they prepare to navigate the Far Eastern skies on
>>>their winter sabbatical abroad. There'll be many opportunities to walk
>>>away with a piece from their bodies of work for your own collection. (You
>>>may even get a piece of them in the process.)

DEGENERATE ART ENSEMBLE in Portland

DEGENERATE ART ENSEMBLE (DAE)

DAE is a laboratory of sound and vision. A band and performance company, the multi-faceted performers brew strong, hallucinatory poisons : music, dance and theater - exploding the boundaries of art. DAE serves its infectious mix in music clubs, galleries, theaters, festivals and the streets.

Instrumentation

Current Lineup:
(Lineup ranges from 4-10)
Haruko Nishimura - lead vocals, accordion
Joshua Kohl - cello, guitar, drums
Josh Stewart - trumpet, marimba, spike, air piano
Jherek Bischoff - bass, drums, casio

The group has performed over 500 shows in 10 countries and explored such a variety of formats as music, dance, theater, film scoring, recording, sculpture, painting and performance art. One of the expressed goals of the group is to “explode the boundaries of art”, and explode them it has, constantly seeking to challenge and renew itself and its audience to create a never-before felt experience at each performance. This extremely versatile group includes dancer/choreographer Haruko Nishimura, drawing from Butoh and European theatre traditions to create “breathtakingly powerful images using the sparest movement style” (Seattle P-I), and a troupe of extraordinarily gifted musicians and composers working together to make sure the “lines between classical, jazz, world music and hard rock aesthetics are obliterated in the eloquently executed, high-energy repertoire.” (San Francisco Weekly)

The DAE has held performances at such venues as On The Boards (Seattle), The Moore Theater (Seattle), Bumbershoot (Seattle), the Crocodile Café (Seattle), Orph Theater (Berlin), Archa Theater (Prague), Teatr 2. Strefa (Warsaw), Theater Yugen (San Francisco), KUD France Preseren (Ljubljana), and the streets of Seattle. 2005 has been an exciting year!

The group performed a concert of 10 new world premieres by Northwest Composers to an audience of 1,200 at Seattle’s Moore Theater, taken a month long tour of the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Germany with the support of
Arts International, and is premiering a set of new music commissioned by Meet The Composer in New York at John Zorn’s new club “The Stone”, and is in preparation for the premiere of their new dance work Cuckoo Crow which will open at the Moore Theater in Seattle in March of 2006.

I'll give you the whole thing:

Boat

Band website: http://www.ohnodisaster.com/boat/
Listen to a song: http://www.myspace.com/boatmusic

{recommended songs: Holding All The Globes ~~~ Clogged Castle}

Boat use lo-fi Shins and early Kinks smarts to write catchy melodies that are at once charming, quirky, and beguiling. Live, they are overachievers with their on-stage construction paper cutouts, audience participation instrumentation and free pudding.

Off stage they are just as diligent. This year they have self-recorded and self-released 2 albums and an EP {with a double album set to be released at the end of this year}... all of which are in the running for a spot on my best of the year list!

Cars Can Be Blue

Band website: http://www.carscanbeblue.com/
Record label website: http://www.hhbtm.com/hhbtm.html
Listen to a song: http://www.carscanbeblue.com/listen.htm
{recommended songs: Do You Remember? ~~~ I Like ~~~ I Used To Think}

Cars Can Be Blue are a boy/girl duo who are "kind of the anti-Mates of State. While Jason and Kori are a living testament to how you can be in a kick-ass band with your cherished spouse. CCBB is a living testament to how you can be in a kick-ass band with someone you alternately love, hate, break-up-with, have-guilty-sex-with, ignore, befriend, and can't stand."

This is their first visit to Seattle and as their bio concisely states, they write "simple, fun, catchy songs that combine bubblegum pop with an off-beat, sometimes even *naughty* sense of humor. Think Dressy Bessy meets Tenacious D, Tullycraft meets Adam Sandler, Beat Happening meets the Moldy Peaches."

The Withholders

Band website: http://www.withholders.com/
Myspace website: http://www.myspace.com/thewithholders
Listen to a song: http://www.withholders.com/listen.htm

The Withholders are a husband/wife duo that specialize in basement rock tunes full of guitar rumbles, 60s-radio hooks, Weezer-esque vocals, and nervous lyrical celebrations of the everyday. Lead singer Valbert {aka Chris Lorraine of The Malinks} and producer Johnny Sangster are currently putting the finishing touches on their debut album {Stay In My Corner} which is due for release this December.

Don Volcano's Computer Corner

Let's take a geography lesson from boreme.com . In this video proud Americans are being asked which country they would consider for invading next.

Americans consider next invasion
http://www.boreme.com/boreme/funny-2005/usa-invade-p1.php

As if it wasn't disturbing enough to find France, Italy, Brazil, and Canada on the menu of U.S. citizens we also learn that they don't really know where those countries are.

How do we know? The interviewer holds a world map and asks people on the street to stick pins into the countries on the map they want to invade. To make it more interesting they changed the names on the map. In some cases Australia showed "France" and you might guess what happened. My favorite part is towards the end. One guy says: "I didn't know North Korea is so much bigger than South Korea" - North Korea being Australia and South Korea being Tasmania.

Who do you want to invade next?
