Events for 7/7 to 7/13/2006

What a nice eruption! The oddest event is probably today's Un-Dressing Party at Consolidated Works. I threw in some comments about fashion, the Fremont Fair, and I am even giving Bollywood an unusual good review. Junk! Seems to be a new interesting event at Alibi Room and I can't wait to see Pirates of the Caribbean.

In this week's Computer Corner I will need your help again. I will talk about talk shows. But one of the clips I found is from a show in some Scandinavian language - maybe Icelandic or Danish. I have no idea what they are talking about but it's super funny.

Audrey Kawasaki, Myna Sonou, and Scott Altmann @ Roq La Rue

Roq La Rue Gallery
presents

Audrey Kawasaki, Myna Sonou, and Scott Altmann

opening Friday July 7th 6-9pm
show runs through August 2nd
opening music provided by DJ Vodka Twist

Roq La Rue is pleased to present a show of three young painters who deal with themes of longing for the natural world,?
as well as their own fanciful interpretations of what that world would consist of.

Audrey Kawasaki
The themes in Audrey Kawasaki's wildly popular art are contradictions within themselves.

Her work is 'innocent and erotic.' Each subject is attractive, yet disturbing.
Audrey's precise yet fluid technical style is influenced by both Manga comics and Art
Nouveau at the same time, and her sharp graphic imagery is combined with the natural grain of the wood panels she paints on, bringing an unexpected warmth to enigmatic subject matter.

The figures she paints are seductive and contain an air of melancholy, and
exist in their own sensually?esoteric realm, yet at the same time present a sense of accessibility that draws the observer to them.? These mysterious and
elusive young women captivate with the direct stare of their bedroom eyes.
For the July show at Roq La Rue, Audrey has adhered to her popular
themes of alluring girls, animal skeletons, and a modicum of flora and
fauna.

Myna Sonou
Similar to her that of her influences The Brothers Quay, Jan
Svankmejer, and Ladislav Starwich, Myna Sonou's work is a peculiar
amalgamation of insects, animals, and compassionate humor. Although
it's not difficult to see Myna's cinematic influences in her work, she
has the unique ability to create an equally rich world within a
microscopic environment. With the addition of her intricate method,
passion for detail, and incredible command of color and texture, Myna
brings her habitats to life for their audience. When viewed, her
Petri dish realms evoke a feeling of sentimental association, however
Myna insists that they do not reflect an emotional display of her
personal hardships. "I try to keep who I am separate from what I do,
because I don't think they need to be constantly synonymous." ? It's
no surprise that her ability to reflect upon the world around her in
an unbiased manner equates to work that is empathetic to her fans.
Myna will be exhibiting both paintings and 3d sculptures.

Scott Altmann
Born on Long Island, New York Scott was never far from a drawing tool
and a surface to make a mark. The early years consisted of funny
looking beasts and asymmetrical faces. Years later Scott attended the
School of Visual Arts in Manhattan and graduated from the Illustration
Department with his BFA.

The paintings being exhibited at Roq La Rue are largely influenced by being a
new dad to his beautiful 1-year-old son. Few adults appear in these
new paintings, which is unusual for Scott. He became interested in
the juxtaposition of a person as an adult and a child. "We are kind of
just big, adult bodies that grow around these little childlike souls.
We never really change much – especially when faced with fear or any
conflict", and this sentiment is an ongoing theme in this current series.
His work is of the realistic doing the impossible with a dash of Sci Fi sensibility.

"Natural Selection" at BLVD Gallery

Hey All

Just wanted to let everybody know about our great show coming up for
july as well as announce that we finally have the beginnings of our
online merchandise. Right now we have a couple of Ray Noland prints up but
be on the lookout for some great prints by Bigfoot, Robert Hardgrave,
Jill Simonsen and more in the very near future. Check it at:
http://blvdart.com/merchandise.html

I hope to see all of you at our
Opening this Friday, July 7.

BLVD Gallery is proud to present:
"Natural Selection" featuring the work of
Iosefatu Sua, Sam Sneke, and Angry Woebots
July 7 - August 5, 2006
Opening reception July 7, 2006 6p- 10p

"Natural Selection" brings together 3 of the Northwest's top Urban
Contemporary artists whose work straddles the line between urban and
rural, mundane and mythical. Iosefatu Sua has for the past few years
been busy creating the fictional South Pacific Island of PEPELO,
inhabited by the Sole', a downtrodden people that represent Sua's
experiences of being an immigrant to the United States. His current
work represents a major shift in style and direction as he now focuses
on the pantheon of the Sole' utilizing the rich colors and often
macabre imagery of Buddhist religious icons and the deep traditions of
his Samoan heritage. Sam Sneke has been involved for the past 15 years
with what he calls "Stylewriting" but is commonly, some say mistakenly,
called "Graffiti". Three years ago Sam made the shift to working with
galleries first by making paintings on canvas utilizing the shapes and
visual vernacular of his mural work. Since 2004 Sam has been moving
away from his aerosol abstractions and more towards a sculptural relief
style utilizing multiple layers of wood in which he reinterprets images
from his sketchbook and pop culture in three dimensions as if the
wildstyle pieces were jumping off the wall to protect their territory.
Aaron Martin a/k/a Angry Woebots, a resident of Hawaii and on occasion
of Seattle, brings a Street pop style to his paintings of
anthropomorphic animals that reflect the complex emotions of
relationships defined by the dominance of others. All three of these
artists work deal with their personal relationship with the natural
world as well as the nature of mankind.

Un-Dressing Party @ Consolidated Works.

Seattle Spin writes:

So get this: this gal has been wearing exact the same dress for one year now. On this date, this gal finally changes her outfit and has a little party to do so.

What an odd one...

brown dress

a year-long performance project

365 days. one brown dress. a one-woman show against fashion.

devised, built, and performed by Alex Martin

launch – July 7, 2005

completion – July 7, 2006

So, here's the deal - I made this dress and I'm wearing it every day for a year. I'll throw snowballs in it (wearing additional clothing layers in cold weather for health & safety), garden in it, rehearse in it, travel in it, dance in it, cook in it, prune my pear trees in it, drink wine in it, sing my baby to sleep in it.

"Un-Dressing" Party

The Grand Finale of the 365-day Brown Dress Project

"Un-dressing" Party now at Consolidated Works
photos by Libby Lewis

Friday, July 7, 2006

This is the final day of the project, and it will also be my 30th birthday. Please attend my "un-dressing" party.

What will happen at the party?

I'll perform my brown dress solo -- it's a dance performance, and you can read some reviews of it by following this link if you want a sense of what it's like.

Also, we'll have performances by fabulous guests, including:

Laura Curry & Lori Dillon
Ricki Mason/LAUNCH
Adele Myers and Dancers
film by Jessica Jobaris
installation by Kristen Tsiatsios

Food & drink

Birthday cake

And I'll take this dress off once and for all

See the journal section for my irregular (yet illuminating!) postings . . .

As a record of the project, I am attempting to take a picture every day - see photos section for a glance at the photographic evidence.

Please write to me with your thoughts on the project! And see the comments page for a taste of what other folks are talking about.

Seattle is an excellent choice for protesting against fashion and consumerism. But for other reasons that listed in Alex's silly artist's statement!

Let me explain: When I took my dog Joe to the Fremont Fair I had a hard time explaining to him the phenomenon of middle-aged, groomed Utilikilt Dudes. I counted 14 - only three of those were kilting around at the Utilikilt booth. They all looked like people, who work at banks or have some other office job - in a dress with pockets for hammers and screwdrivers. About a third of them were wearing silk versions of Utilikilts and holding hands. Granted that silk Utilikilts might have become some new gay thing the bottom line is that it was a disturbing experience that I am still recovering from (and Joe to a lesser degree). Also, what's up with wearing socks and Birkenstocks on a hot summer day? Are you out of your mind? That makes me want to wear a suit for 365 days!

Jerboa Dance @ Broadway Performance Hall

Gary writes:

The last Jerboa show was really good, so I would guess this one would be as well. Though its mainly a moden dance show, Jerboa has a much more accessable feel to it than other Seattle based moden dance. It feels a little less experimental and a little closer to Cirque du Soleil with some of the more athletic styles than other Seattle companies.

Here are more details about upcoming shows:

The next Jerboa Dance performance is coming up July 7th and 8th. It is a collection of short works of different styles by Seattle choreographers. It will be a fun show with talented dancers, inspired choreography, and great music. The tickets are $15 in advance and $18 at the door. Advance tickets are available at http://www.ticketwindowonline.com/show.php?shownumber=1201 or at any Ticket Window location. Please let me know if you have any questions and forward this to anyone you think would like to come!

Bollywood @ Baltic Room

Me recommending Bollywood? Yes. I think it's time to revisit Bollywood. Maybe it has returned to what it used to be: loud exotic music, overcrowded, riots between young professional Indian-Americans, some of them thrown through glass doors. That's how they started Bollywood and I miss writing about it. I do not miss Panjabi MC but maybe Bollywood has reached a point in its cycle that becomes comparable to what Zappa said about Jazz: It's not dead, it just smells funny.

Firstly, I hope you all had a great Independence Day (4th of July). We have a great party planned for the coming Saturday, come to the Bollywood @ Baltic Room to enjoy some new hip hop remixes by Manpreet and some kick ass Bollywood mashups from Anup. Peter wants to play some old school Bhangra he says....Bring It On.

Don Volcano's Computer Corner

Let's talk about talk shows. In these days it has become so hard to spot the fakes amongst the people that you should feel sorry for. Like this one:

"my fear of mustard and pickles is running my life"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2S89Y4shxtE

Being afraid of dogs, birds, and even clowns I can understand but pickles, balloons, and peas?

Balloons

Pea-phobic woman to appear on TV
http://www.slashfood.com/2006/03/21/pea-phobia-woman-to-go-on-tv/

Nice try! - Or not? The task of spotting fakes becomes even harder if the show is broadcasted in a language that you are not familiar with. I got this one from Salon's Video Dog and they write:

Ridicule: The universal language

It's safe to say we all can enjoy how this interview show goes terribly, fantastically awry. Still, translations are welcome! (And, no, we're not guaranteeing that it's real.)

I am hoping that our PV readers are maybe able to help to get to the bottom of this clip:

(Interview going terribly, fantastically awry)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HH0awSk7i8Q

So? What is it about?

Yours,

Don Volcano.
