One Night Stand Series presents: The Two Week Affair

Ballard Fetherston Gallery’s One Night Stand Series presents:
The Two Week Affair [because sometimes one night is not enough]

Summer Roadtrip 2006
July 28-August 12

Opening Night Reception-Experimental Bluegrass performance by Michael Lukas!
Friday July 28th 5-8pm
Free and open to the public! Due to the "Summer Roadtrip Theme" we will be serving cans of beer and bags of cheetos!

July 28th, Ballard Fetherston Gallery presents the third installment of the “One Night Stand Series”. The series is a sequence of one night only events, showcasing emerging artists, scheduled throughout the year. The Summer Roadtrip 2006 exhibit will remain showing in the Gallery through August 12.

Emily Leonard will be showing dozens of miniature oil landscape paintings, all less than 7 square inches. “I’ve always been drawn to the delicately perfect designs in the trees and skies and ground,” she says. “Paintings find me everywhere I go, whether walking in the woods, driving under the dawn-virtually anywhere the sun is.” This body of work is informed by her recent roadtrip to Nashville, with her large-scale landscape paintings in tow.
Emily Leonard holds a BFA from Furman University and studied painting and stone carving in Italy. A native of Nashville Tennessee, Leonard now lives and paints in Seattle, in the Toshiro Kaplan Building.

Chris McMullen, A south of Georgetown welder, will be showing dramatically large-scale kinetic welded metal sculptures. The 105”x75” “Motorworks II is a conceptual V8 engine, metaphorically “powering” the entire show, with its moving pistons, and sheer massive size. The piece, which will show at Bumbershoot this summer was part of a roadtrip to MARFA, and was shown in the Art Outside show in Austin Texas. McMullen makes a living as a designer and fabricator of custom metal work, both artistic and architectural. His main influences are Marcel Duchamp. Jean Tinguely, Richard Serra, Alexander Calder and Industry. He has shown with Vital 5 Productions, Secludes Alley works, and the Bellevue Sculpture Exhibition.

Vanessa Briggs, and Francois Aleta, transplants from Paris France will show two video/mixed media installations that each explore the themes of movement as well as things that really go nowhere. In “Sorrow: an allegory on vanity”, Briggs shows footage from her recent roadtrip to Nevada, aboard a Greyhound bus, while musing on her own trip to America. Using a non-narrative-emotional/narrative format, Briggs mounts three framed pieces; one contains video of her “Road Movie”, a loop of film capturing an inflatable roadside advertising balloon. The repetitive, pathetic image corresponds to two empty frames indicative of her experience of viewers often being more concerned with the frame, than the image. Briggs was born in London, and studied architecture in the south of France, and Fine Arts at the Beaux-Arts of Paris. She holds a MFA from the Fresnoy, National studio for contemporary Art in Lille France. She initially came to Seattle to complete a year long residency at Gary Hills studio.

Francois Aleta will show a screen containing his latest essay “Pondre”, which he wrote, and transposed into a visual/pictorial font which he created. The black and white images are moving drawings, representing the alphabet, as a complete font which he calls “Textimage”. Each letter overlaps one another; each word and sentence becomes a new drawing and gives the rhythm to the video…a moving image, which is a drawing of the text. Aleta was born in Paris France, and studied painting, medieval tapestry, and art history at the National Gobelins School of Paris. He left painting for other mediums, and now writes, produces video, digital drawing and sound composition. He has shown his work in Paris, Lille, Belgium and Los Angeles... .

Angkor / America

Angkor / America
Our 10th year of youth drama in the Rainier Valley

Rainier Valley Youth Theatre (RVYT) celebrates its 10th year anniversary with Angkor / America - a new, world premiere production by Seattle theatre luminary Todd Jefferson Moore, with music by Wayne Horvitz and choreography by Navy Kheav.

Angkor / America uses documentary theatre blended with classical Cambodian dance and contemporary hip-hop to trace the stories of Seattle’s Southeast Asian immigrants and their families, beginning with life in SE Asia and following their sometimes harrowing, always inspiring journeys through war and immigration. The production culminates with a look at life in America today and what it means to be a teenager - Cambodian, Laotian, Vietnamese, American.

RVYT and Mr. Moore have been working with SE Seattle’s Cambodian and Laotian communities since January, interviewing people of all ages and collecting stories about their lives. Through working with Sambath Suong and the Khmer Youth Group of Rainier Vista, RVYT discovered choreographer Navy Kheav, a classically trained Cambodian dancer and dance major at the University of Washington. SE Seattle resident and noted musician Wayne Horvitz joined the project and discovered a connection to Chan Moly Sam, classical dance teacher of the Khmer Youth Group and former court dancer for King Sihanouk of Cambodia, who will act as a project advisor.

Other community collaborators & partners include Mey Saelee of the Lao Highland Community Center, Tikka Sears of the UW Asian Studies Center and Dara Duong, founder and Executive Director of The Killing Fields Museum and Cambodian Cultural Center of White Center. The work of these groups and individuals have resulted in a powerful new piece of theatre - Angkor / America.

Angkor / America opens on Wednesday, July 26, and runs Wednesdays-Saturdays through August 5 at 8pm at the Rainier Valley Cultural Center, SE Seattle’s premiere performing arts center, 3515 S. Alaska. For tickets and more information, call (206) 725-7169.

JUSTIN MARTIN
(Buzzin' Fly Records / Dirty Bird Records - San Fracisco)
www.BuzzinFly.com / www.DirtyBirdRecords.com

URB MAGAZINE 2005 NEXT 100 ARTIST!

Justin Martin is one of the few DJs that successfully bridges the gap between being commercially successful and staying true to the underground. His sound has been described as both melodic and tough, with releases ranging from the dynamic & smooth “Brazilian” on Utensil to the boomtpy “Cats & Dogs” on Classic. He first gained international acclaim for his single, “The Sad Piano,” on Ben Watt's Buzzin' Fly label. The single made its way into many A-List DJ crates such as Derrick Carter, Luke Solomon, and Mark Farina, as well as receiving many accolades from critics. He considers himself lucky to be making music and is always a humble, but rocking presence on the dance floor. Stay tuned for a full length artist album coming soon on Buzzin' Fly Records in late 2006.

Luminous Flux 2006 (Space Virgins) @ ConWorks (R.I.P.)

A German saying reminds us: Everything comes to an end except for sausage (sausage has two ends). This is the final ConWorks weekend before it will disappear forever. The Space Virgins are using the opportunity and will have a big party. In my opinion the Infernal Noise Brigade should have their funeral at ConWorks. Yes, you heard right: The INB is also going out of business. But let's get back to Luminous Flux. I got about 11 emails pointing out this event. The Burner community wants a full house.

Jon writes:

You do NOT want to miss this party. I'm serious. Repeat. You DO NOT want to MISS this party. You have no Idea what we have planned for you, but if you did you would throw your momma from a train to get here. not kidding. You could go on safari. You could get captured for the petting zoo. You could get instructed to make out with me.

Did I mention that this all happens on ANOTHER PLANET???

The EQlateral trio(gorgeous otherworldly string trio from Critical Massive) will perform with LIVE(yes! living!) Aerialists at 9:30.

Dance til you drop.
post far and wide.

If you do decide to go don't bother showing up before 11pm.

The Space Virgins, in collaboration with Consolidated Works, are throwing down to celebrate the joy of (alien) life:

We invite you all to return with the Space Virgins to our home planet, where we will dance under alien flora, go on safari and hunt for black litebits and hooowhiskey, and play with critters to beautiful to be seen, in our Intergalactice Jungle. ConWorks is closing so this is your *last
weekend* to party in the space!

In order of appearance:

DJ Diem -- Tribal House
DJML -- DeepFunkyTribalProgressive House/Techno
Brannon -- Break Beats
Pauly D -- Funky House
DJ Riz -- House
Baz -- Psytrance

Be prepared for utter mayhem in the Intergalactic Jungle!!! Immigration office upon arrival, stampedes, safari rides, aerialists in hoola hoops, Live PA with Justin and Thomas, whorish Reiki, animal control, petting zoo, blind room, EQ3 (the beautiful string people from Critical
Massive, starting early at 9:30), alien monkey love nesting, Tap Explosion by annabanana, and dancing under the giant alien weeping willow .

I guess its time for the Art Walk again...

Joanna Thomas: Lion Devouring A Rabbit and Other Collages

Joanna Thomas: Lion Devouring A Rabbit and Other Collages
Opening Reception: Thursday, August 3, 2006, 5-8 pm

This month PUNCH presents the collage work of Joanna Thomas. For this series Thomas uses collage elements to gussy up antique 19th Century French engravings taken from a book published in 1873, in a limited edition of 1000.

As Thomas states, ”In exploring the notion of art as precious commodity, I have embellished these undoubtedly valuable antique engravings with collage elements, rendering them uniquely my own, and, quite possibly, completely worthless.”

Thomas playfully and poetically assaults works by such masters as Delacroix, Gainsborough, Hals, Poussin, Rembrandt, Turner, and Watteau, and in doing so, challenges the historically and regrettably disparate experiences between male and female artists. Originally priced at 40 francs, the engraved book’s frontispiece declares that profits from its sale shall be used to benefit the poor. Widows and orphans aside, the engravings now serve as a subtle feminist comment on the consistently male-dominated art market.
