Events for 4/29 to 5/5/2005

Not the most exciting week. But not the worst week either. My best pick for Friday is Tomiko's Print Sale Party. My favorite for Saturday is Wazhma's Last Call for Love Life. But GMP's Internacional party on Saturday sounds like a lot of fun too.

What else? I got this really funny email from Seattle School, who is looking for a registered nurse, and I decided to open a new column called the Party Volcano Recruiting Center. I hope you'll like it. This week's Computer Corner will leave you scratching your head with a flashy site from China.

Waiting for Lefty: The Plain Truth

Hi Don,

The next theater production on the Cornish calendar is Waiting For Lefty, April 26-May 1.

Odets’ original Depression-era play is presented in rotation with a contemporary interpretation, written by second year Theater students under the direction of Mame Hunt.

Seats to this play, both versions, are free and open to the public.

Please contact me if you’d like more info,

Adriana

Waiting for Lefty 2005: The Plain Truth by the Sophomore Theater Ensemble, directed by Mame Hunt

Waiting for Lefty: The Plain Truth (2005)
April 27th, 29th, at 8:00 pm and May 1st at 2:00 pm

Both productions are presented in the Ned & Kayla Skinner Theater at Raisbeck Performance Hall,

2015 Boren Avenue, Seattle.

Free and open to the public. Limited seating!

SEATTLE, WA – Cornish College of the Arts is pleased to announce two concurrent productions of Clifford Odets’ Depression-era play Waiting for Lefty, one penned by Odets, and the other by the Sophomore Theater Ensemble, alternating April 26th through May 1 in the College’s Ned & Kayla Skinner Theater. Performances are free and open to the public, though seating is limited.

Clifford Odets’ fervent Depression-era drama Waiting For Lefty was one of the theater’s greatest clarion cries for the rights of the working class. In 1935, the issues were joblessness, patriotism and having to swallow your integrity in order to advance in your job. In 2005, the issues are the same, only now a job is called a “career” and the issues are debated on talk shows instead of union halls. Under the direction of Cornish faculty members Bonnie Cohen and Mame Hunt, second-year students of the Cornish Theater Department have created their own ‘extrapolation’ of Odets’ Lefty, performed in rotation with the original play.

Performance Hall,

2015 Boren Avenue, Seattle.

Free and open to the public. Limited seating!

PROSPERITY DESERT GATHERING in Eastern Washington.

Hippie alert!

The date is Saturday april 30th, 2005 beginning
around 8pm, and will go until sometime Sunday
afternoon, May 1.

We will be in Eastern Washington, and it will be
pretty cold at night possibly in the 30's, so
make sure you bring warm clothing. It will also
be warm in the day, possibly in the 80's, so
don't forget your sunscreen. And there is always
a chance of a little rain, since we are in
Washington.

This is a camping trip, so please make sure to
bring all of the usual camping supplies i.e.
tent, bedding, and things to keep warm.

There will be NO FIRES ALLOWED, so dress warm and
please do not bring firewood, or attempt to build
a fire, or you will be asked to put it out.
Sorry, no fire dancing either. We will be in a
dry area with a high fire danger, and wouldn't
want to have to fight any wildfires.

Make sure to bring plenty of food for the time
that you plan to stay. There are no stores
nearby, so if you run out, it will be very
inconvenient for you. Bring at least 1 gallon of
drinking water per person, per day, plus whatever
you will need for cooking, washing, etc. If you
have a first aid kit, please bring it.

PACK OUT WHAT YOU PACK IN! Please bring an ample
amount of garbage bags for your camp and maybe
for a friend's camp as well, and leave enough
space in your vehicle for them once they are full.

Please dig a hole at least 6" deep for human
waste and do not leave toilet paper behind. If
you have a small shovel, it would be a good idea
to bring it.

BE AWARE THAT THERE MAY BE RATTLESNAKES IN THE AREA

The Western Rattlesnake is indigenous to Eastern
Washington, and is definitely venomous. If you
have a snake bite kit, and again, first aid,
please bring it along. Hopefully none of this
will be necessary, but it's best to be prepared.
Here is a link to help you identify a Western
Rattlesnake if you see one.

http://www.washington.edu/burkemuseum/herp/cviridis.htm

PLEASE DRIVE SAFELY AND SOBER TO AND FROM THIS EVENT!

It is a long drive, which will include going over
a mountain pass, and we want you there and back
home safe, so please please please do not be
under the influence of anything while driving.

The road from the highway to the location is a
fairly rough dirt road, so take it slowly and
carefully.

Most of all, come out, get dirty, share your
love, and get down under the stars with some good
friends in the desert! WAAAHOOOOOO!!!!!!!

We will be building a Maypole as well, so bring
40ft of ribbon if you'd like to participate.

Directions will be posted here:

STRIPJOINT II @ ConWorks

Acrophelia writes:

Dear Don Volcano--
I get the impression that this type of event isn't entirely your cup of tea; nevertheless, I think your subscribers would enjoy it. It was a real blast last year, and this year is only going to be more fun (if that is possible). Besides, it's for a good cause: a benefit to send the Circus Contraption clowns to New York City for five weeks this September. (We are a nonprofit arts group.)
Read on... and thanks for your attention!
Sincerely,
Acrophelia of Circus Contraption

Ms Acrophelia is damn right: clown strippers are not our cup of tea. At Circus Contraption my name would be Clownophobius Violentus. But we find clown strippers more appealing than politically motivated clowning like we saw last weekend.

STRIPJOINT II ! A BIG APPLE BENEFIT FOR CIRCUS CONTRAPTION

Circus Contraption, purveyor of fine prurient amusements, brings back the
wildly popular "StripJoint!"
For ONE NIGHT ONLY, Circus Contraption creates an evening of sensual rapture
and HOT Clown-on-Clown action!

STRIPJOINT II !
A Circus/Strip Club Party and Fundraiser Benefit to bring "Circus
Contraption's Grand American Traveling Dime Museum" to New York City this
September!

At last year's "StripJoint!" people lined up around the block to get in.
This year we'll have plenty of room for everyone at Consolidated Works on
Saturday April 30, 9pm to 2am!

Sexy, revealing StripperClowns of all orientations! HOT HOT HOT GIRLS AND
BOYS!!!

Dancing all night long! Scantily Clad Tarts on Trapeze! Couch Dances! Double
Trouble! Shower Show! VIP Room! Goo Wrestling! Live Cabaret Stage! Live
Music and DJ's! Beer & Wine Bar! Raffle for fabulous, naughty prizes! Aerial
burlesque by the aerialicious Aerialistas!

Live music includes those nasty tramps from the wrong side of the tracks,
The Bad Things; the thoroughly debauched Moonpenny Opera; and the raucous
Circus Contraption Band, among other special surprise musical guests to make
you shake your boo-tay.

And did we mention the HOTTEST StripperClowns around???

All proceeds from this event will be used to "mount" "Circus Contraption's
Grand American Traveling Dime Museum" at Theater for the New City in New
York City during September of this year. (A smash in Seattle and San
Francisco last summer, the show is coming again to Magnuson Park this May!)
WE NEED TO RAISE $60,000. And we can think of no better way to "solicit" the
generosity of our patrons than by the gratuitous use of. SEXUAL
ENTICEMENT!!!

StripJoint II will be an amazing party and even bigger and better than last
year. Money raised will aid us in our mission to bring audiences the
strangest in contemporary, surreal Circus entertainment.

Footnote for prudes: StripJoint II is a strip club parody and complies with
all local, state and federal laws. Last year's event was 100% safe and legal
(not to mention hilarious and a BLAST) and this year will be the same-- only
steamier and more fabulous!

Who says Circus Contraption doesn't offer fun for all ages?
See ya under the Big Top!

GMP Flight 430

Hello, and welcome aboard GMP Flight 430, traveling on Saturday, April 30th from Seattle to two exciting INTERNATIONAL destinations: China and Mexico!

Our trip will begin with a stop at Jimmy Woo's Jade Pagoda at 10pm, followed by a short flight to Galerias at 11:15pm.

But first, we'd like to take a few moments to highlight the various safety features of this partycraft. There are several exits from this party, one in the front, one at the rear, and probably one or two others -- though we're confident that you'll have little interest in leaving once we take off. If you're partying in one of the exit rows, please do not store your costume at your feet. If you're inclined to strip off your costume during the party, please store it in one of the overhead compartments, but only after you swing it above your head a few times.

In the event of a Dance Landing, you can follow the rows of lights on the ceiling and floor to the dance floor. White disco lights lead to red disco lights, which mark the dance floor. Please help other people find the dance floor, if they are having difficulty.

In the event of a loss of peer pressure, new friends will pop up to buy you shots. Place the shot up to your mouth and swallow it quickly. If you are traveling with people acting like small children, please drink your shot before helping them with theirs.

On the bar in front of you is a tip jar. Be sure to fill it with cash.

Please take a moment now to make sure your costumes are fastened low and tight about your waist. Your costume might reflect one of the many INTERNATIONAL destinations we hope to visit -- from Canadian Mounties to African Masai warriors, from Japanese Geishas to Australian Kangaroos. You could be dressed as a Mexican tourist, or a New York native, a Hawaiian Islander or a Scottish Highlander. Maybe even someone from Antarctica? Or you might prefer to dress like our flight crew. Or just dress 'INTERNATIONAL', whatever that means to you. Whatever you wear, please ensure it remains fastened until the captain turns off the 'FASTEN COSTUMES' light... like that would EVER happen!

There will be no meal or in-flight movie during our flight, though drink service will be provided for a small fee. Our first class passengers will have a selection of Top Shelf liquors available, while our Coach Class passengers will be drinking PBR -- you know who you are.

On behalf of the captain and the entire flight crew, we'd like to thank you for choosing Guerrilla Air. If there's anything we can do to make your party more fun, please don't hesitate to ask.

Get your passports in order, and we'll see you in First Class...

Jade Pagoda is located at 606 Broadway East.
Galerias is located at 611 Broadway East, and has dancing from 11pm til 3am. There is a $5 cover, but it includes a beverage before midnight.

"Love Killers" Opening Reception @ VAIN

Peekaboo Monster and OneSevenNine are “Love Killers”
curated by Damion Hayes of Cut Kulture United

Exhibition: May5- May30 , 2005 at VAIN, 2018 1st ave
Opening reception: Thursday May 5. 5pm-9pm
Hours: Sunday – Saturday noon – 7pm

Peekaboo Monster and OneSevenNine are “Love Killers”

Cut Kulture and Vain are pleased to present the work of Peekaboo
Monster and OneSevenNine, Two of Seattles most promising young urban
contemporary artists.

“Love Killers” is a statement about the misunderstood characters that
populate the work of both OneSevenNine and Peekaboo. While they may
seem cute and innocuous, Peekaboo monster and his crew of Heckle and
Jeckle like crows maintain a much more sinister presence in the world
created by the artist. OneSevenNine utilizes her “Germbots” to awaken
a sense of optimism in everybody who come across her decals that are
placed in all corners of the city. Please enjoy yourself and keep all
limbs inside of your vehicle.

“Peekaboo Monster and OneSevenNine are “Love Killers” is the fourth in
a series of art shows which will be curated by Cut Kulture’s visual
arts director Damion Hayes at the VAIN Salon gallery.
The series aims to create a dialogue between Seattle’s arts patrons and
the burgeoning contemporary urban arts scene we have here.

NEW DEGENERATE ART ENSEMBLE @ Rendezvous Jewelbox Theatre

A FEAST OF NEW DEGENERATE ART ENSEMBLE MUSIC MAY 5th!!
Catch DAE Quartet’s last Seattle Show before heading on tour in Europe!

SONGS NEVER BEFORE HEARD BY THE HUMAN EAR!!!
Ranging from sweet-and-lovely to head-banging-powerhouse-rollercoaster
Music that has been proven to cure rare diseases and inspire the
downtrodden

Featuring:
Haruko Nishimura on vocals, accordion and brass kazoo
Joshua Kohl on percussion, the newly built panthrastic cello/harp II, vocals and guitar
Josh Stewart on trumpet, marimba, spike, vocals and the cuckoo air powered piano organ
Jherek Bischoff on acoustic and electric bass, vocals, drums and casio

Come and send DAE off on their 12 City Tour of Czech Republic, Slovakia and
Germany Supported by Arts International.

This space age 4tet has built many of these instruments - in some cases merging
their very flesh with the woods and metals - such is the case of bionic trumpet
super-power Josh Stewart - having built a marimba, his limbs are now made of
resonant wooden keys, and he carries the new name Marimba Jairimba.

Jherek (the Sun Ra of Casio) plays an instrument that is only 1/20th the size of his body!!!! His heart wrenching bass playing has been known to break metal goblets cleanly in half when no one is looking. Joshua's Panthrastic Harp
Zither has been broken numerous times by the evil forces which are trying to prevent him from virtually taking over the world with his magical sounds.
Haruko will bedazzle you with her finger bending eye brow scalding vocal
utterences and turbulent movement - sending your very soul into the far reaches of our solar system.

PLUS!!!

Also on the evening's program is:
the great AMY DENIO
and the MONKTAIL CREATIVE CONCERN

DAE's raving mad quartet will serve a feast of multi-instrumentalist cuisine
at Rendezvous Jewelbox Theatre (2322 2nd Ave)
THURSDAY MAY 5th 10:30 pm, 21+

On 050505 we will be celebrating a momentous occasion. Retail Therapy will be turning TWO.

I would mainly like to say a quick thanks to all the folks who have made this whole journey so incredible and had faith in our vision. Without all your support and love we would not have come this far, and for that I am eternally grateful. On this very special cinco de mayo I ask that you come and celebrate with us!

I am honored to have Lane Gwinn present a whole new series of paintings. Her swimmers are mesmerizing. Her presence has been a constant inspiration and our traditon of showing new art in an open enviroment continues.

The first 50 people that come in will receive goodie bags! We will also have a raffle giveaway, and are having a huge sale.
Food, wine and music will be provided as always.

THE POP SMEAR TEST needs a Registered Nurse.

Seattle School and EMP's Liquid Lounge are looking for a Registered Nurse
for a new electronica music competition series tentatively entitled THE POP
SMEAR TEST. The series will run monthly on either Fridays or Saturdays at
the Liquid Lounge at EMP, starting in July.

The series pits two laptop producers against each other creating original
audio tracks in pre-designated dance and electornica styles (Drum and Bass,
House, Ambient, Jungle) using only audio samples of human sounds collected
from the attending audience that evening. No soft-synths, drum modules or
any musical instruments whatsoever will be allowed.

Judges will be the reptilian-involuntary body responses of two randomly
chosen audience members. After each round, their body responses will be
guaged by the Registered Nurse to determine their "judgement", such as heart
rate, blood pressure, sweat-salt levels, dilated pupils, etc. Regardless of
their conscious brain's opinion, their reptilian brain tells the real
tale.

THE POP SMEAR TEST will be hosted by Fred Northup of Unexpected Productions.
Competitors include Nordic Soul (producer of the 2004 and 2005 Decibel
Fesitval).

Nurse will be compensated $25 per show. Contact Korby Sears at

Don Volcano's Computer Corner.

In this week's edition I would like to present you an example of a site that was entirely built using Macromedia's Flash format. It is pretty flashy indeed. But I have no idea what the site is about. Have a look:

Cyborg Fish
http://www.yenz.com/x-fish.html

I learned that Cyborg Fish is part of The Secret Garden of Mutabor. Some sorts of game I guess. Playing it for five minutes gives you a solid headache:

The Secret Garden of Mutabor

If you go to the home site you'll find more flashy knick-knacks like Moccu ("be amazed") and the Vital Force game:

Yenz.
http://www.yenz.com/

I have to say, I am impressed. Is this site maybe more about showing off Flash features than real content and meaning? What the hell is this about?

You tell me...
