Events for 1/13 to 1/19/2006

This is an interesting week: 14/48, Pop Smear Test, and Neutrino Project are "three of a perfect pair". One of them is getting a thumbs down hoping that by doing so we will never have to see somthing like Burlesque Bollywood.

The Scion Installation might fill Roq la Rue's wallets and enables it to host interesting shows in 2006. But at our labs "auto shows" get the thumbs down.

The Future Lava section will point out Baldarchy on Friday, 20th.
This week's Computer Corner will be about computers.

Can you imagine anything that is funnier than USB drives?

Scion: Installation @ Roq la Rue

I have to warn you that the last "auto show" got a very rare downgrade for Roq la Rue:

Roq la Rue
Presents

Scion: Installation
A group exhibit with work by
David Choe, Coro, Crash, Daim, Dez Einswell, Jeremy Fish, Blaine Fontana, Kofie, Mad, Mike Giant, Kenton Parker, Ricky Powell, Rammellzee, Dr. Revolt, Rostarr, Seak

Opens Friday Jan 13th 6-10pm (runs through Jan 26th)
Live painting by Iosefatu Sua
DJ’s Mr Supreme and Evil One

I went back to the old downgrade of the Scion's INSTALLATION at Roq la Rue on 8/27/2004 and I thought this might give you some direction. With this show I am definitely leaning towards - pardon my French - CRAP again.

The email came with two pictures of "installation panels" by Retna and Kenton Parker and both are - pardon my French - CRAP.

Sorry, this is a rare thumbs down for Roq La Rue. Wasn't Scion the company that pumped some money into one of the shows at Secluded Alley Works (R.I.P.)? Money from car companies and artists' talent don't seem to match in this project. I have seen better marriages of corporate America and starving artists. For example I like outcome of the threesome with "would-you-please-send-me-another-check" Lucky Strike, CoCA, and The Stranger much better.

If you do decide to go to the show don't repeat my mistake and pick up one of those free Scion bike messenger bags. They are just too heavy for gluing them on walls in your apartment (see Glue Gun Party in the Central District in PV from 3/29/04).

14/48 Festival @ CHAC

One World Theatre and 3-Card Monty present

14/48
the world’s quickest theater festival

(Named Best Arts 2005 by Seattle Magazine)

at the
Capitol Hill Arts Center

Welcome back to the world’s quickest theater festival, presenting 14
world-premiere short plays conceived, written, designed, scored,
rehearsed, and presented in 48 hours.

The combination of deadline, talent, speed, nerves, and genius
inspiration served to strip away the creative inhibitions from more traditional
theater, proving that sometimes the first idea is the best.

This winter, the festival is thrilled to be continuing our venue tour
of Seattle's Capitol Hill, moving into the stunning, charming, spacious,
and heated Capitol Hill Arts Center.

"Of all Seattle's theatrical oddities, 14/48 is probably the oddest. It
has been going on since 1997. The longevity itself is a peculiarity for
an event that is wild, unpredictable, desperate and exhausting." -Joe
Addock, Seattle Post-Intelligencer

"A punishing artistic exercise in speed and endurance." Brendan Kiley,
The Stranger

"The best argument for going to see 14/48 is that it can only exist in
a city like Seattle." Gianni Truzzi, Seattle Post-Intelligencer

"Some of the most fun I’ve ever had in a theater." –John
Longenbaugh, Seattle Weekly

Neutrino Project @ Jewelbox Theater / Rendezvous

So what is the Seattle Neutrino Project?

Seattle Neutrino is a group of actors, technicians, and camera operators. They are divided into three teams, each responsible for their own story line. After the cast solicits ideas, objects and inspiration from the audience, they exit the theatre to begin shooting their scenes.

Using nearby street corners, venues, and passers-by, the cast and crew film live scenes, run the tapes back into to the theatre, add music to the video, and project the results on a screen in front of the audience, letting you watch an hour-long movie about five minutes after it is shot.

Hey, this sounds familiar. I would say this is a low-budget version - if you can get any lower - of 14/48 on film. Do we really need more of that in a week with 14/48 and Pop Smear Test?

I know what's next: Always a little bit late but never too shy when it comes to exploiting popular themes the Mirabeau Room will host a new event called "Burlesque Bollywood":

After the cast collects ideas for Indian dishes, they exit the theatre and collect ingredients from nearby street corners, venues, and passers-by. The cast then continues with preparing the dishes according to the audience's instructions. An hour later the results are being presented and the cast eats their smelly dishes naked in front of the audience while dancing to the latest Bollywood hits, letting you watch an hour-long feeding fest about 5 minutes after it is cooked.

I can't wait to write the downgrade for that one!

Heart of Glass @ Kozy Kino

Rob writes:

I think we should wage real war against TV and commercialsagainst Gunsmoke and Bonanza
What struggle is that passion which drives us to devour our own shoes? I hold out the hopes that a crafted
song can yield such a force. Or maybe even a singular sound that came from an underwater guitar
in the tidal flats of 140 years past. Something like this is what Werner Herzog (take him with easy bowels)
seeks to find in the myserious fable of a 19th century Bavarian village one nestled in the mountains where
the secret of the ruby glass is faithfully forged. The death of the glass master casts a spell of lost hope and
waning lifeforce. All exist in a slow motion, dreamlike state and are oblivious to the visiting Alpine prophet
who voices all his clear visions of fate even the one where he fights an invisible bear.

I think that Bavarians and Butoh believers, alike will exhault in the Heart of Glass, in which the actors
(many of them Bavarian yokels) perform under hypnotic direction from Werner (who, by the way, is
also a Bavarian yokel). And fans of the further laying to waste of popular culture will enjoy the featured
short, R. Kellys Trapped in the Closet. And if everyone is good and lucky, maybe even the very busy
but deliberate DKPan will offer his butoh style in concocting your very special beverages. Patience is a
virtue in vice.

Drink special: something slow moving and vaguely poisonous.

And dont miss Saturday night at The Perfect Room as your wonderful hosts Laura and Monte present
a night of poetry. Seattle, what are you going to do?

The Kozy Kino is an underground cinema that infuses diverse film programming with thematic beverage
service. Programming is, as yet, still irregular but, as oft is possible, we will throw down the homemade
cushions, fire up the video beamer and concoct delicious refreshments to wash down the freshly popped
corn. Each featured film is a wonder of cinema coupled with shorts and inspirational drink specials.
Its a cheap night of uninstitutionalized quality entertainment and a fine example of underground economy.

HeyYa.
Please take notice of the location change (listed at top). The original space has been ruthlessly gutted by
the greedy cokehead landlord. So it is now a repertory thing, and we are very excited and grateful to be
hosted by the Perfect Room an ideal locale. Its still an intimate experience (read: seating is limited),
but its the sort of thing that this town needs more of (e.g. the speakeasy, the peoples kitchen, the Sunday
sermon, the peoples' underground surgical theater, etc.). Help breathe some life into this 'theme park of a city'
now and start your own! If someone doesnt soon, I swear Im moving!

questions? contact: inphaseprod@yahoo.com
and oh yeah, Kino means cinema in German, Russian, etc. ... so please don't write me asking!

Jessie Summa-Kusiak Art Opening @ Revolution Coffee & Art

John writes:

Jessie Summa-Kusiak (formerly of Ripley) has her own art show at
Revolution Coffee in West Seattle. go by hang out, and meet her, eat
some of her cheese and see her work. Just so that you know, Jessie did
all of the art for the Rockergrrl conference, so she's got chops. In
her own words:

I have a show of gloomy etchings and pretty photographs circa
1992-2005 coming up at Revolution Coffee & Art in West Seattle.

It will be there from January 7th through February 4th, but most of
all I'd love to see you on January 14th. That's when I'll be there,
liberally dispensing a few of my favorite wines and cheeses (ssh, I know
it's a coffee bar but please!) and hawking the artwork for extremely
reasonable prices...ring in the new year with a present to yourself for
once.
The party goes from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Hope to see you there!

Anyways as always I have surprises but you can count on fabulous strong women in one place as well wine, treats, snacks and plenty of time to play dress up. spankstra 6 months reading series
a literary evening with a focus on new work

Dear Citizen,

spankstra press would like to announce our 6 months reading series to be held at Capitol Hill Arts Center on the 3rd Monday of each month beginning January 16th, 2006. This event will be an evening of literature with a focus on new work expressed through the medium of the spoken word. Each month will feature distinguished writers whose invitation is based upon quality of work and contribution to literary arts.

We are pleased to announce that the evening of January 16 will feature 5 of Seattle's finest writers.

Bret Fetzer: Mr. Fetzer writes plays and fairy tales. He'll be doing a late-night
storytelling show, "Bedtime Stories", at Richard Hugo House from Jan
20-Feb 11, Fridays and Saturdays at 10:30 pm. His most recent play,
"Passport", will be produced by Annex Theatre in May. He has a small scar
on the back of his left hand that he got from running into a barbed-wire
fence in the dark when he was eleven years old.

David Dahl: Hi...My name is David and I'm an asshole....
I was born in Kansas in the middle of the last century.
I write poetry, build choppers and restore old Harleys...
and I'm a pretty fair shot with a .45 (Just ask Ira!)
as well as Pope of my own church--The First Church of
Divine Biker Love. I rec'd my BA in English from the
University of Washington and I'm currently pursuing
my MFA in Creative Writing at the UW were I've also
worked for the last few years. I lived for several
years in Bellingham were I ran some big-time poetry
readings. I've been published lots-o-times but never
really paid much attention so don't ask me to list
them all....

Brian McGuigan: Born in Queens, NY, Mr. McGuigan has lived in Seattle for the last three years, and he's sick of the fucking rain. He works around the block at Hugo House, publishes when it rains from the ground up, and produces "A Night of Cheap Wine & Poetry" series. When he's not doing these things, he writes poems about friends and family. Don't get too close to him; he might write a few about you.

David LaTerre: This will probably work against me, but around 2000 I realized that I'd been compromisiung my self as an artist for the past 30 years. As a filmamker/writer/painter, and even pianist, I'd dutifully tried to forge a linear and narrative line. I now believe that I was attempting to express 1 or 2 simple getsures. I believe that the manner in which I'd used communication was ineffectual; perhaps communication is not even possible. I think that I have been much closer with the vignette, the pastiche; the voices. It is closer to the way the mind thinks or the eye perceives [I suspect this all sounds hopelessly pretentious]. David is the author of THE IRA PROJECT and CALL OFF YOUR DOGS, both published by Spankstra Press

Arne Pihl: Arne Pihl is a writer, visual artist and carpenter. He has written three books of poetry and short stories: Deck Hand Arm , Girls Girls Girls, and Montana. His work has appeared in When It Rains From The Ground Up, Beautiful Lumber, Vox Populi, and has been aired on National Public Radio. His writing has been described as “an attempt to reconcile the narrative rhythms of working life with the things computers whisper when they’re asked to reminisce about the typewriter.” It’s important not to take things like that too literally, though. He lives in Ballard.

The evening will begin at 7 p.m. In addition to the featured readers, there will be numerous open mic slots available throughout the night. Feel free to come and read your work.

The event is free of charge. Bring a friend.

Sincerely,

Chris Dusterhoff

THE POP SMEAR TEST

A Human Body-Laptop Game

Featuring Obelus, ndCv, and Syzygy

Seattle School’s Human Body-Music Melee moves to Chop Suey!!

The POP SMEAR TEST is the game where competing DJs create music using only sampled sounds from the body functions of the audience. The teams of electronic producers compete to create three different tracks with one major limitation: all audio used in their tracks must be comprised solely of audio collected from the bodies of the audience that evening. No soft synths or drum modules are allowed.

The final tracks will be judged by the audience as well, but with a complete disregard for their personal opinion. THE POP SMEAR TEST is instead judged by the involuntary bodily functions of the audience. Two actual professional nurses will take the vital statistics of audience members while they are hearing and feeling the finished audio tracks. Whichever team elicits the most amount of excitement from the audience - gauged by winning the highest marks in at least two of the three categories of Heart Rate, Blood Pressure, and Body Temperature - will be deemed the winner. Regardless of the conscious brain's opinion, the heated heart tells the real tale.

THE POP SMEAR TEST will be hosted by Dr. Fred Northup Jr. (not a real doctor but a real junior) of Unexpected Productions. Beautiful and professional nursing provided by Kelley Steinbach and Jenna Gleason (YES! They are REAL nurses!)

WHEN: Wednesday, January 18th; Doors at 8pm
WHERE: Chop Suey, 1325 E. Madison, Seattle, WA
ADMISSION: $5

Don Volcano's Computer Corner

Let's talk computers and let me fill you in on the exotic world of USB drives!

I estimate that I have been able to make only one joke involving USB drives in my entire life. And it wasn't even a good one: One day a friend came over to have me look at a document or source. So he gave me his memory stick with the document on it and after working with it on the back of my laptop I said: "It doesn't fit!".

Now that I think about it it's not funny at all. But my friend and I laughed for ten minutes. The punch line is that USB drives will always fit into your computer. That's the whole idea of it. There are two safe things in life you can rely on: We will all die but until that will happen we'll be able to plug a memory stick with USB drive into a USB port.

This important piece of truth about life might have inspired the authors of this hilarious site:

The top 10 weirdest USB drives ever
http://gadgets.fosfor.se/the-top-10-weirdest-usb-drives-ever/

I promise you will find at least one USB drive that will make you laugh.

My favorite is of course Barbie USB.

Cheers,

Don Volcano
