The Dirty Pigeons NYC Opening in London.

Indie Rock Royalty meshes with the London art scene when Dirty Pigeons NYC appears for it's much anticipated group art show.

For the first time ever, the painting of nine New York artists
will be displayed at the highly recognized gallery 96 GILLESPIE. The
Dirty Pigeons NYC movement was formed by an invitation from gallery
directors Graham & Standage to New Yorkers Joanna Virello and Gibb Slife
to organize this most unique show. During the early Spring of the 2004
the two started to organize a diverse group of established painters,
each who has made a name for themselves in the arts and have a few that
happen to have strong ties to the music scene. The Dirty Pigeons NYC
that signed on are: New Yorker art director Gibb Slife, indie rock
drummer for Les Savy Fav Harrison Harris, Kevin Willis, Joanna Virello,
Kat Irannejad, Michael Cline, Alison Elizabeth Taylor, Daniel Lefcourt,
and Travis Lindquist. Suddenly one pack of talented artists who had
never met one another were now bonded with a common mission...get to
London with their latest and greate! st artwork. In the tradition of The
Ashcan School, the infamous group of artists who captured the feel of
turn-of-the-century New York City through hard times and intense
portraits of everyday life, this group of rag tag artists have the same
mission.

Departing from the staid portraiture and genteel images of
the twentieth century, these artists focused on urban scenes, exotic
culture, religion and icons. Their intent, however, is not muckraking
social commentary but the portrayal of urban vitality and producing a
trans -Atlantic show of American art in the 21st Century that would
upset London at a time when Yanks are not very popular. Their paintings
as a group show will exhibit the gritty realism, informality, and rapid
execution of visual reportage. With such unprepossessing titles as
Bush-on Bush and Strangelove, The Dirty Pigeons, and their paintings
capture the imagination. Also known as the New York Heels, they are
forecasted by critics as "revolutionary hustlers" and the "the apostles
of oils." The other, originally pejorative label-Empire Art School- has
become the standard term for this young yet important group from
Gotham.

Please join The Dirty Pigeons NYC at 96 Gillespie for the
private view/party Friday, April 1st, 2005 . 7 - 9 pm.
Location: 96 Gillespie road, London N5 1LN
Opening hours: Thur-Sunday 2-6pm. or by appointment
Admission: Free

“Excluded” @ Washington Hillel Center

April 1 – May 31
FenomenA is proud to present “Excluded” - an exhibit of fine art photography exploring elusive habits of the Israeli youth by an Israeli artist Tzipi Eshed. Following a successful U.S. premier at the 10th annual Seattle Jewish Film Festival, the exhibit of eight black and white photographs and a short video will be on display at the University of Washington Hillel Center starting April 1st 2005.

Tzipi Eshed, an Israeli painter/sculptor/photographer, animated even the most jaded art critics last year with her novel project “Excluded” (זול תמ). Literally “Without Them”, this documentary endeavor, presented in the series of black and white photographs and a short video, captures the secluded world of the rebellious Israeli youth in the villages of the Galil. “Excluded” is a universal story of the cool defiant gang that everyone wishes to join but few manage to penetrate. Eshed, herself a middle-aged mother of teenage boys, was granted a glimpse at their elusive habits, which she captured with raw honesty and beautiful simplicity. Through her striking shots we become voyeurs of these young people’s unremarkable yet highly coveted hang outs. We marvel at the ingenuity of the crude sheds that they build from discarded scraps; feel at home in the unkempt yet cozy interior; and get lost in the thick aroma of the nargila smoke. “Excluded” is ! a rare glimpse at the life of the Israeli youth.

Saucy Jack and the Space Vixens @ Timberline

Hello,

I was hoping you might list our hysterical, campy musical in your email next week. It's called "Saucy Jack and the Space Vixens." The show runs April 1-May 21 at the Timberline, and it's a hoot.

"Saucy Jack and the Space Vixens is the intergalactic new musical where glam-rock meets disco, Rocky Horror meets Return to the Forbidden Planet, Blake's Seven meets Charlie's Angels.

Saucy Jack and the Space Vixens promises a dazzling mix of science-fiction setting, fabulous costumes and sensational musical numbers, including "Glitterboots Saved My Life","Let Me Be A Space Vixen", "Plastic , Leather and Love" and "All I Need is Disco".

The style is high-camp, cliches abound, with a smothering of innuendo that would do any musical show proud."

thanks,
Lori

VARIATIONS ON A FAST BREAK @ On The Boards

Seattle School presents:
VARIATIONS ON A FAST BREAK
World Premiere chamber music work for 2 Referees, 8 Coaching Chamber Musicians, and a quantized 2-on2 Basketball Game
for On The Board's NORTHWEST NEW WORKS FESTIVAL 2005

People often speak of the "music" and "rhythm" of basketball. Seattle School's new chamber work VARIATIONS ON A FAST BREAK seeks to both exploit that concept and simultaneously demonstrate its shortcomings by placing musical constraints upon a typical 2-on-2 basketball game, creating a discipline piece of music, sport and dance that demands completely new, non-intuitive physical skills.

By eliminating the rubato inheirant to the sport, the basketball players may now "play themselves" like an instrument, quantized in synch to music performed by their Coaching Chamber Musicians during their ball possession. Tempo and meter will change per ball possesion, established by the ref / conductor. Deviations from the established musical grid will result in fouls on the ball players - and the musicians.

Ultimately, the piece creates an audio experience of harmony and unison suprisingly cleaved from people competing against each other. An unexpected third derivative creates a new dance piece for the defense players, who must also rush in movements quantized to the music being performed, creating new expressive and highly visual movements in which to steal the ball.

WHEN: Saturday and Sunday, April 2nd and 3rd, 2005 - 8pm
WHERE: On The Boards, MAINSTAGE, 1200 W. Roy St., Seattle, WA (206) 217-9888

"Almost Perfectly Inked" @ Richard Hugo House

Sounds boring:

On Monday, April 4, a distinguished panel of writers, including Xu Xi, Oscar Penaranda, Sharon Hashimoto and Peter Bacho, will discuss the short story in Asian American literature. Writer-in-Residence Anna Maria Hong will facilitate the panel, hosted by the Hugo House Touring Writers program.

The panel will talk about crafting the short story, writing political fiction, working with stereotypes, how the Asian American short story has changed in the last 10 years, writing across genres, and writing from a trans-Pacific perspective. "This panel is the second event I’m producing at Hugo House with the goal of facilitating discussions about contemporary Asian American literature," says Hong. "I’m producing these programs as writer-in-residence in order to provide an ongoing forum for Asian Pacific Islander American writers to talk about their work and the works of other poets and writers in the context of race. I’ll be producing more events along these lines in the next year."

The event, "Almost Perfectly Inked: Asian Pacific Islander American Fiction," starts at 7:30 p.m.; admission is $5/$3 members at Richard Hugo House, 1634 11th Ave., Seattle.

Jesse Edwards – Recent Works in Oil
curated by Damion Hayes of Cut Kulture United

Exhibition: April 7- May1 , 2005 at VAIN, 2018 1st ave
Opening reception: Thursday April 7. 5pm-9pm
Hours: Sunday – Saturday noon – 7pm

Jesse Edwards - Recent works in Oil

Cut Kulture and Vain are pleased to present the work of Jesse Edwards,
a forward thinking Seattle artist who embraces the techniques of
Impressionists and Old Masters alike while challenging the viewer with
a reality based subject matter that questions morality and middle class
value systems. The work displayed confront the age old question of
beauty by juxtaposing images of hardcore street life and classic still
life composition. Jesse Edwards' paintings ultimately are about love,
life, and redemption.

Jesse Edwards’ education in art began in the early nineties on the
streets of Seattle as he
followed his older brothers lead and began an illustrious career of
writing graffiti. Jesse acknowledges the impact of seeing the
masterpiece murals of local graffiti legends SOUL1, SNEKE, REY, BNK and
others who blessed the old Vogue walls in downtown Seattle had on his
desire to create art. As he developed his own style Jesse began
researching art history at the Seattle public library which led him to
the works of the Old Masters and Impressionists. Jesse's synthesis of
such disparate influences gives his art a tension which always creates
a reaction in the viewer without being simply reactionary.

Don Volcano’s Computer Corner

On the Internet every day is April’s Fool Day. There are uncountable sites out there with the only purpose to make you believe that something is real even though it is not. Let’s have a look at some Internet fiction sites - I used some of them last year to fool you.

This is an easy one. But you have to admire the idea:

Airplane Home
http://www.airplanehome.com/
http://www.airplanehomes.com/

This is a tough one. It’s about letting your dog live in freedom with other dogs on a sunny island. It took me a while to figure out that everything is made up. How did I find out? The weather forecast for Doggy Island is always sunny and clear:

Dog Island
http://www.thedogisland.com/

The following site looks so real that it got under heavy attack from animal lovers. But it's a joke. "Dedicated to preserving the long lost art of body modification in house pets…" this site gives tips on how to grow kittens into glass cups so they would adapt to the desired rectangular shape of the constraining glass body:

Bonsai Kitten
www.bonsaikitten.com

Sometimes it is very hard to spot a fake. I thought this one was a fake. But these guys are actually serious as I learned later from an article:

Inflatable Church
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2547970870
http://www.inflatablechurch.com/mainpage.htm

Do you now think you know what’s fake and what is real? Well, then tell me what you think about this one?

Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches
http://www.topline-2000.com/roach/rhsale.html

Please send me your favorite "fake-or-maybe-not" site!

Cheers,

Don Volcano.
