The Mayor's Arts Awards recognize the contributions made by local artists, arts and cultural organizations, and community members who make a difference through arts and cultural activities. " Seattle is home to some of the finest artists and arts programs in the country," said Mayor Greg Nickels. "This year's recipients not only reflect the diversity of arts and cultural offerings this city has to offer, they represent a substantial body of extraordinary achievement and contribution in the arts."

The Mayor's Arts Awards are presented in partnership with the Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs, Bumbershoot®: Seattle 's Music and Arts Festival and media sponsor Seattle Magazine.

Second Life @ Rainier Room at Bumbershoot

Susan Robb writes:

Hello!

I have work in two upcoming shows:

If you're in Seattle (or online- www.secondlife.com) please come by the Rainier Room at Bumbershoot to experience my ghost geysers, take a nature hike, and view my ghost prints in Pixel Dolls, MeatSpace, and Everything All At Once, curated by Michael Van Horn. This show brings together "Real World" and "In World" artworks, paintings, drawings, videos, and photography exploring the submersive, ever-evolving, user created, virtual world Second Life.

If you'll be in Mexico City between August 29th and September 15th please check out City Bitch and Travel; a group show of artist's personal travel photography held at Pasaguero, Mexico City's new, super cool contemporary art center.

I hope all is well

Flux and Form @ PUNCH

Don't know whether it is any good:

Michael Sherwin:

Flux and Form

Opening Reception: Thursday, 7, 2006, 5-8 pm

Flux and Form encompasses photo-based installations, videos, and hand-made books that investigate subtle phenomena of the natural world through different forms of cataloguing and mediation. Using repetition and association as a means to explore his subjects, Sherwin suggests relationships between disparate subjects, and challenges the boundaries of the photographic image.

Time, and an awareness of the changes it brings, is at the core of Sherwin’s artwork. Incorporating both the still and moving image, Flux and Form will explore perpetual systems of the world, from the surface of the sea, to the very ground beneath our feet, in order to examine the mystery behind their elusive nature.

As Sherwin states, “We live in a world of continual flux, where everything is in a state of becoming…Photography interrupts this continuum, presenting us with a fragmented form of reality. It allows us to pin down the changes in order to see what we could otherwise not see, to document and record the fleeting in an attempt to reveal the patterns of a transitory world.”

Central Washington University’s new Professor of Photography, Michael Sherwin first moved to the Northwest in 1999, and in 2004 received his MFA in photography from the University of Oregon. His work has won numerous awards and has been exhibited and published widely at the national level.

The primary mission of PUNCH is to provide support and encouragement for artists to create and exhibit their work in an atmosphere free from the constraints of commercialism. PUNCH promotes the visual arts as a necessary, valid, and worthwhile contribution to Seattle’s cultural growth.
