Welcome to a rare political issue of Party Volcano! You will find a passionate downgrade of “Clowns to protest the Patriot Act” and learn about a political video clip in Don Volcano’s Computer Corner that will make your nails crawl up. There are not too many exciting events to talk about, though. But we try to make up for that by throwing in two Cold Lava reports.

Priceless Works Opening reception
Hastro Gould writes:
I saw this in Seattle Weekly. I have fun at the openings @ Priceless Works. It is one of the few galleries that serve free beer & wine at their openings. Dreading the day when you have to pay for the beer and wine at an art opening.
From Seattle Weekly:
Priceless Works In "A Lot Like Love," art imitates film . . . or something like that. Kristen Imig's photos of kissing couples were used in the new romantic movie of the same name, in which Amanda Peet plays a woman who finds her calling as a photographer. Apparently, Imig has staked out this odd little niche, providing photos for other films including Spider-Man and Welcome to Collinwood.

Gettin' __________* at the War Room
Fortune Kiki writes:
Dear friends and party goers,
It's been a while since the last time we spoke. Do hope this email finds you well and swell. What a gorgeous week so far. I mean really... can Seattle's spring weather be anymore perfect than this? Anyway, cut to the chase and on to the news flash of what's coming up from your PERFECT HIT crew.
We've been blessed to have a new house music monthly at the new hot spot in town, THE WAR ROOM. For those who not familiar with the War Room, I include the link to some related articles regarding the space at the end of this email. Nicely decorated inside out, plush leather booth seatings, Shepard Fairey artworks all around, seriously... this place has it all. With Spring is in the air and Summer is just around the corner, the War Room is the only spot on Capitol Hill that has ROOFTOP DECK complete with a full bar. Nuff said... come check us out this Friday. Here's the skinny...
* Fill in the blank. Help us name the night.

Look forward to see you there this Friday...

Emir Kustarica’s Underground @ Kozy Kino
After Saturday night’s sparsely attended screening of Wong Kar Wai’s 2046,
it will feel good to see a healthy stream of folks come through the Kozy Kino door
when we move back to the regular scheduled Friday showing of Emir Kustarica’s
Underground. Many of you may have seen this, but unless you saw it in theaters
years ago, you’ve never experienced a quality projection, and probably not with
a sizeable group people really digging it, and certainly not with thematic drink specials
and plates being smashed to the ground during the wedding party scene. That’s the
Kozy Kino Difference.
If you have NOT seen this film, you truly are ready for a wonderous cinematic treat!
‘Once upon a time, there was a country…’ Underground begins with the 1941 Nazi
bombing of Belgrade and two fiery, loving friends who are smuggling guns for Tito’s
partisans. Continual impassioned bedlam and the closing net of the ‘fucking Fascist
motherfuckers’ soon leads to the need for one of them to go‘underground,’ literally,
and a pro-longed saga of deceit and betrayal unravels as the film encompasses an
impossibly lengthy time period of Yugoslavian history. There is a snapping point at
which two anachronistic realities smash into one another, exploding willy nilly and
the characters go flying off, on an unbelievably bizarre and tragic arc that loosely mirrors
the fragile, ill-fated story of Marshal Tito’s Yugoslavia. ‘Once upon a time, there was
a country.’
Drink Special: Comrade Christina Darling is working on a tasty non-alcoholic beverage
for those on the wagon, while I’m on the hunt for rakija so that people may experience
a more authentic, Balkan taste sensation… which is a kind of a burning sensation, actually.
The Kozy Kino is located at 1809 Minor Ave. (between Stewart and Howell) right
around the corner from the Rebar. It is also somebody’s loft space but don’t
let that put you off. Although it’s an intimate experience (read: seating is
limited), it’s the sort of thing that this town needs more of (e.g. the speakeasy,
the peoples’ kitchen, the Sunday sermon, the peoples' underground surgical theater, etc.).
Help breathe some life into this 'theme park of a city' now and start your own!

CLOWNS TO PROTEST THE PATRIOT ACT
This is just stupid. Let’s start with the facts first before I swing my Downgrade Thumb:
The clown group “KOOK CLUB” will hit the streets in a mock protest against
the Patriot Act.
A member of the Kook Club was arrested at the 2003 Washington DC WTO. She
was simply walking behind a group of bystanders when they were surrounded
by riot police and arrested. They were held in handcuffs without food or
water for 15 hours.
When asked how the government can arrest peaceful people (including an 82
year old nun), they responded that since the Patriot Act, a group of more
than 15 people, not in a single file line is considered an illegal,
unregistered protest. Although the Patriot Act does not specifically state
this, the government has used certain language from it to limit the ability
of United States citizens to demonstrate. Below is an excerpt of official
wording from the Patriot Act:
(According to the Patriot Act, domestic terrorism is defined as (1) anything
intending "to intimidate or coerce a civilian population," (2) anything
intending to "influence the policy of the government," and (3) anything
that "involves acts dangerous to human life."
By this definition, protest groups could be considered in violation of the
Patriot Act if the organizations block streets or if violence occurs during
their protests. These organizations could face prosecution under the
Patriot Act for holding public demonstrations and for utilizing their
freedom of speech.)
So far, so good – or bad for the girl, who got arrested. It’s upsetting. Let’s do something about it. I want to sign up! Growing up as a teenager in Germany I learned some basic rules of urban class war:
1) You let the cops come into your neighborhood where you know every stone.
2) The day before the demonstration you spray the street signs so extra troops from out of town get disoriented during the fight.
3) expect that you will be outnumbered by the cops.
4) During the confrontation make sure that you don’t get hit by stones from your own people
5) Be aware of this combat strategy: a first line of stones is being thrown in a high angle so the cops would have to raise their shields in order to protect their heads. The second line of stones follows immediately and comes in at the unprotected body level.
There are more rules but that list will get us started! Who is getting the tools and the ski masks? Let’s get started!
So how shall we do it? What’s the plan?
As an act of peaceful defiance against this, the Kook Club will gather 40+
clowns at the Hideout on Capitol Hill (1005 Boren Avenue in Seattle) at
4:30pm. The clowns will leave at 5:30pm heading downtown in a single file
line, each with a sign that reads “WE ARE NOT PROTESTING!”. Our message is
that we have the right and the responsibility to question our government and
its policies by peacefully demonstrating. As our manifesto states: In order
to be seen as an “American PATRIOT” we are “giving up the left for our
rights.”
Oh boy, I think I am in the wrong movie. This is not Rambo and Terminator against Dr. Godzilla. This is Bambi with a dislocated shoulder!
What kind of wussies live in this town? Marching around and dressed up like clowns? What is your political message? That you are clowns?
You got to be kidding me.
this event will be filmed.
the general public is invited.

Strategy
Portland dj, producer, and musician Paul Dickow is the man behind Strategy. He
has played drums in the art punk outfit Emergency, keyboards in Fontanelle, and
multiple instruments in Nudge. He has been performing and DJing as Strategy at
dance clubs, rock clubs, dance parties and galleries up and down the west
coast. Strategy wires together Dickow's programming and performing experience
via a hodgepodge of table top electronics, computers and realtime musicianship.
Combining a granular ambient aesthetic with an abstract, percolating rhythmic
sensibility, he unites small parts into complete melodies motivated by complex
pulsations. He has releases out on his own label Archigramophone,
Loscil
Vancouver, BC artist Scott Morgan is the man behind Loscil. He creates
sound-effects for video games by day and makes music by night. As a student at
Simon Fraser University he studied composition, electronic-acoustic music
production, and also played drums in various bands. He has toured in Europe and
played shows all over the Pacific Northwest, integrating sound and visuals. On
Locsil's latest full-length release, "First Narrows" (out on Kranky), Morgan
combined acoustic and electric-acoustic instruments including guitar, Rhodes
electric piano, and cello, with computer generated sequences created from sound
sources that ranged from sampled instruments to miscellaneous lo-fi
mini-cassette recordings, all using his own custom programming, sequencing, and
processing which he designed so that no two performances of the patches would
be exactly the same. Loscil will be performing with Jason Zumpano on Fender
Rhodes electric piano.
Nudge
Portland band Nudge has been a working group for five years, centered around
main members Brian Foote (who runs the Outward Music and Audraglint labels) and
Paul Dickow (also a solo artist who works under the name Strategy). Nudge works
through marathon improvisations and edits that cohese into perfectly formed
future music. Merging live instrumentation and singing with programmed
material, they play what most artists working in electronic music sequence,
perhaps accounting for the remarkable warmth at the center of Nudge's complex
technologies. Nudge's debut album "sounds like a sugared-up Tortoise splashing
vivid colors on to cool jazz's charcoal-hued canvas", wrote Dave Segal in the
Portland Mercury. With releases out on Tigerbeat 6 and Outward Music Company,
Nudge's third full-length album, "Cached", is due out on Kranky in May 2005.
Sir Paul Edwards
Recently knighted by Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II, Sir Paul Edwards
McCallick (aka DJ Paul Edwards) has been rocking shows in Seattle since 2001
with his tradmark micro/glitch house and dub/experimental sets, both dj and
live. Paul has also become one of the city's most active promoters, bringing
some of the best shows to our fair city, including such artists as Murcof,
Proem, and Geoff White. Besides DJing and performing live, promoting, and
recording in his studio, Paul is also Decibel Festival's technology director.
Recently he has been wowing crowds with his amazing live PA/DJ set hybrid
performances, creating quite a stir. "If somebody were to make a film about
intelligent dance music, Paul Edwards would merit a starring role...his
impeccable musical taste and skills as a DJ, plus his own excellent
productions, add to his stature", wrote Dave Segal in The Stranger. "I really
have no idea actually why he was knighted, I've never even heard of him. Who
the hell is he anyway?", Sir Elton John recently remarked when asked about Paul
Edwards, "I think Her Majesty the Queen, in her old age, must have confused
this Paul Edwards McCallick with Paul McCartney, whom she must have forgotten
she already knighted anyway", he went on to say. Accidental confusion or not,
Paul Edwards and his hybrid performance are not to be missed!

Neil Goldberg lecture and screening @ NWFF
Hastro Gould writes:
If you haven't checked out Rainstorms at Western Bridge yet do so NOW!!
Following is the blurb from the Western Bridge News Letter:
Neil Goldberg lecture and screening at Northwest Film Forum
Video artist Neil Goldberg will present an evening of his single-channel videos at Northwest Film Forum
Goldberg’s short, casually shot, highly edited videos distill lovely, sad, and common moments, whether his subjects are anonymous people on the street or his own parents. The latter are the subject of two of the videos, “My Parents Read Dreams I’ve Had About Them,” which is as richly cringe-inducing as you might imagine, and “A System for Writing Thank You Notes,” wherein Goldberg’s father, a retired engineer, describes a disturbingly rational process he used to send cards to friends and family after the death of his wife.
In five videos titled “Hallelujah Anyway,” Goldberg collects a variety of urban moments, mundane and uncanny. One comprises dozens of Manhattan merchants lifting the roll-up doors on their shopwindows.
Discussing the creation of this piece with Robert Marshall in PAJ: A Journal of Performance and Art, Goldberg says “My feelings changed day to day. One morning I’d think: ‘There it is: misery. Another day to sell those Tootsie Pops and soon we’re all gonna be dead.’ On another I’d think: ‘O.K., another chance: the gate’s opening.’”
Similar in structure, “Describing the Cyclone,” a silent, black and white video, shows anonymous people who have just ridden the famous Coney Island rollercoaster gesturing to describe the path of their ride.
Cut one to the next, the movements build into a sort of found dance piece, choreographed by the coaster itself.
Goldberg’s videos and video installations have been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, the Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus, OH, the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, and the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Ridgefield, CT.
Neil Goldberg’s “19 Rainstorms” is on view at Western Bridge through May 14.

The Seattle Erotic Festival opening gala sucked!! Pardon the pun. It may be edgy but erotic, please!!! Ok about 10% of the population may find it erotic, but what about the
other 90%? Is straight sex not erotic anymore? Does anyone not do nude fashion photography ala Helmut Newton anymore? Also what is the deal with the harsh light, no music deal? Don't you want people to have fun?

P.s: All those people visiting the show... come on smile a little flirt a little. Don't be so serious. For fuck sake you're at an erotic art festival.
Mustache Party 2005 (4/16/205)
I’ve got an angry email from the guy, who was hosting the Mustache party and learned that it was a private party. I told him that it was already too late and he should replace the address with an email address on his site if he was really worried. That was obviously not enough. He pulled the plug on the whole site. Suddenly http://nerdhaus.com/mustache was not available anymore. And what happened? I got only one email asking: “What’s up with that link? It’s not working.” Out of 1700 Party Volcano only one reader was interested in going to the Mustache party and noticed that the site was down.
The Party Volcano Research Lab has been feverishly working extra hours since in order to explain this phenomenon and has come up with some theories:
1. Nobody reads these emails anymore.
2. PV readers don’t wear mustaches and didn’t feel qualified.
3. 1699 PV readers went to the mustache site immediately after reading the review but before the site went down.
It might be a combination of all of the above. But I really think that the influence of this silly email list is vastly overrated. Everybody in this little town seems to fear our famous Party Volcano downgrades and the masses of insane party crashers we are supposedly able to move. Who wouldn’t be afaid of an uncontrollable party guerilla flash mob showing up at your house? Reality is, though, that most of our readers are reasonable people: reasonable, but curious about what is going on in this town and what they will potentially miss.
That’s my theory.
Don Volcano’s Computer Corner
This is a recent acquisition, a link pointed out by PV reporter Ron Jeremy. This video is so disgusting it makes me want to dress up like a clown and march through downtown with a sign that says “WE ARE NOT PROTESTING!”:
America We Stand Alone.
http://americawestandasone.com/video.html
A friend of mine found this “adaptation”, which is hilarious. The guy, who created it, took the original video and merged it with “America, Fuck Yeah” from the Team America movie. Well done, Josh!
