Events for 3/10 to 4/6/2006

Next week I am going to Europe for two weeks - Amsterdam and Hamburg to be exact. My girlfriend said that I have to leave the laptop at home and that's why I want to take a little break from Party Volcano. I will send out the next issue on Fri 4/7.

This week's list is short. But I have found some god ones. My favorite is probably DAE on Sat. I like Mamafest and Krakt (Rebar on Sat). Roq al Rue's "Triple Threat" looks also pretty good and that's almost the whole list.

This week's Computer Corner will finally present the ultimate "web site about nothing". The funny part is that it is unintentionally useless. But you should judge for yourself.

Well, this is it for the next three weeks or so.
Let me know what I have missed.

"Triple Threat" @ Roq la Rue

Our next show “Triple Threat” opens this Friday, March 10th 6-10pm. Featuring the work of Ryan Heshka, Brian Despain, and Davey (aka Dave Wong), this show illustrates in different way the conflict between technology and nature, with a heavy dose of pop surrealistic and science fiction flavor. All the artists will be in attendance and DJ Vodka Twist will provide the musical ambience. (See more info and images below!) This show is going to be fantastic! The show will be online soon. Contact us to be put on a preview list.

Featuring Aaron Allshouse, Matt Fontaine, Rachel Hynes, Andy Loviska, Tamara Paris, Mike Pham and SS Stansbury.

What are the social and spiritual ramifications of computers? What is identity in a world where human beings are represented by data, freely available in cyberspace? Are we all just bits of information, floating freely, unmoored from history, truth or meaning?

HKPG does not set out to answer these questions, or to explore them or even touch on them in any way. Computers are possibly the most boring topic ever known.

Instead, HKPG gives you a series of maddening, inscrutable performance actions, along with the usual poorly sung songs, childish humor, sick fascination with torture and violence, and moments of indescribable beauty and wonder. Also, we have included hours of full frontal male nudity.

Among those who have seen HKPG’s work in the past, 25% found it uniquely thought-provoking, 25% were confused but interested, a further 25% were stoned and thought it was sketch comedy, and the remaining 25% wanted to strangle us for wasting their time. We hope you’re part of the 25%. If not, well, goodbye eighteen dollars.

Boys, look like you're having fun, but don't have any.

Snoqualmie West

Seattle Jewish Film Festival

They are showing " Live and Become " at the Museum of History & Industry (MOHAI) .

LIVE AND BECOME is a sweeping epic told through the intense intimacy of one boy's survival amidst the Ethiopian famine of the 1980's. The film begins in a crowded Sudanese refugee camp, as American and Israel forces airlift thousands of Ethiopian Jews (called Falashas) to the Holy Land in a secret mission dubbed "Operation Moses." An African mother colludes to place her 7-year-old non-Jewish son among the evacuees in hopes of saving him from a grim fate. Young Solomon (Moshe Agazai) is swept away to Tel Aviv and taken in by a French Sephardic family. Renamed "Schlomo" by his adoptive parents and forced to conceal his true identity, salvation slowly gives way to the inner emotional decay. As a teenager circa 1989, Schlomo (now played by Mosche Abebe) falls in love, but the romance only underscores the tension and deceit of his feigned life. The film's powerful concluding chapter centers on Schlomo as an adult (Sirak M. Sabahat) and his bold actions toward self-healing. Winner of the Audience Award at the 2005 Berlin International Film Festival, as well as Audience Award Winner at Boston, Washington D.C. and Palm Beach Jewish Film Festivals.

horrific contemporary fable told through
powerful live music, dance, physical theater
and animation.

New Multi-Media Work
Two Years in the Making

Cuckoo Crow brings together a team of
dancers, costume artists, set designers, instrument
makers and composers to create a strange new
mythical landscape full of beauty,
struggle and humor.

Artistic Director Haruko Nishimura's vision
is realized through musician/performers
Joshua Kohl, Josh Stewart, Ambrose Nortness,
Paris Hurley and Paurl Walsh, while breathtaking
hand drawn animation by Stefan Gruber bring
Elizabeth Jameson's unique and inspired
original costumes to life.

Acclaim for Degenerate Art Ensemble

"(Degenerate Art Ensemble's dancer/choreographer)
Haruko Nishimura gave a performance that sparkled
with the looseness of an improvisation, all the while
maintaining the control of a master."
San Francisco Bay Guardian

"This music and movement ensemble create work
outside of all music and dance conventions, telling
surreal stories filled with sweetness, power and humor.
The unexpected is accomplished and a mysterious
mythology emerges."

SUPERHO KRIS MOON AT REBAR (KRAKT)

There is a new event called Krakt every 2nd Saturday at the Rebar.
Kristina writes:

Hey PV,

Okay, well this is us: http://www.myspace.com/krakt . We’re a techno monthly at re-bar where the motto is: leave your chin stroker at home, check your pretension at the door, drink some booze and get crazy dammit!! there are enough “heady” nights in seattle, so we’re the yang to the yin. We’ve gotten a reputation for hard techno, but that’s not entirely true. All types of techno fly from minimal to ripping. I also drop in a lot of older acid house and sometimes tech-house and electro. But the brand is entirely in-your-face, so I can see why people think we’re hard techno.

Anyway, we’re just some humble djs creating an old school atmosphere (think Detroit parties circa 1994 - dark and danceable) for as cheap as possible. $3 usually unless we bring someone in from out of town, but this city has a lot of locals that are just as good as anyone we could bring in... and $3 on a Saturday is a pretty good deal. Paul and I make nothing on the night. cover just pays for promotion, the guest dj, and part of the t-shirts.

We send out monthly emails in the voice of KRAKT, offensive humor at it’s best. Check out the myspace page and see if it’s something you’d be into. The current krakt website is just a filler, the first full version should be up in a week or so. You can see how it’s coming along at krakt.net/new.

Thanks for chatting,

kristina

Don Volcano’s Computer Corner.

Here is a little follow up on Microsoft's iPod package from last week:

If Microsoft re-designed the iPod package
http://www.arctic.org/~patrick/misc/ms-ipod-parody.wmv

A PV reader informed me that the video was actually created by the group at Microsoft that does packaging. It was apparently an inside joke that leaked.. And this is one of those cases where they weren't happy it did.

Okay, here is the web site that I have promised you. If Seinfeld is a "show about nothing" then this site is a "web page about nothing:

Live Flight Tracking
http://flightaware.com

Don't get me wrong, I think this is a brilliant site. Unfortunately it's completely useless - unless you are taking flight lessons for the purpose of kidnapping an airplane and fly it into US landmark buildings. Let's start with exhibit #1.

A Day in United States Airspace
http://flightaware.com/analysis/map_day.rvt

I bet you want to see A Day in United States Airspace in action:

All Flights Movie
http://flightaware.com/analysis/allflights_movie.rvt

Let's move on to exhibit #2. I have always wondered how our own little airport here in Seattle is doing. I wish there was a graph that would show me exactly the distribution of departures and arrivals at SEA. Today is my lucky day, because I found it at Flight Aware:

Seattle Tacoma Int'l (KSEA) [Seattle, WA]
http://flightaware.com/analysis/graphs/airport/KSEA

I would have never expected the results: The flight activity goes down at night and comes back every morning.

This is all useless data presented in the most professional way. I know that the people at Flight Aware have been spending many hours to get it up running at this level of quality. Are they at least making any money? That brings us to our last exhibit. I guess they sell ads like this one:

Zuluworks kneeboards - A safe pilot's best friend.
www.zuluworks.com

What is a kneeboard? Is this a joke?

Well, I am leaving Seattle next Tuesday and I am sure my plane will leave traces somewhere on FlightAware.com .

Take care,

Don Volcano
