Movie: JUNE & JULY @ Brady Hall

This one is free:

JUNE & JULY
(Brady Hall, Seattle, 2006, 35mm>DVCam, 85min.)
Written and directed by Seattle filmmaker Brady Hall (POLERCHRIST, JERKBEAST), JUNE & JULY turns the 20-something indie film formula on its ear. Lifelong residents of a depressed small town, fraternal twins June (Bernadette Culvo) and July Shauer (Nathan Williams) are inseparable. Sprung into action by the death of their mother, June hatches a plan to leave her brother and the dull rural life, in search of adventure and excitement in the big city. July, unaware of June's plans, continues to enjoy the simplicity his quaint town has to offer. Before announcing her departure, a house party fight exposes Junes mysterious supernatural physiology. While searching for the link between her powers and her past, June discovers an old photograph that leads the pair on a road trip that unravels the secrets of their family and its genetic history. Injecting drama with humor and even a bit of science fiction, JUNE & JULY is a bittersweet portrait of an unusual pair of siblings and the story of their divergent paths. Great music supports this beautifully lensed exploration of an enigmatic family history, in what can only be called a unique vision from our region.

CroatiaFest 2006 (Fri & Sat)

Seattle Spin writes:

Festival: Croatia Festival, Oct 7-8th, free. The big whoop-de-do at this festival is the sword dancers. Then, it's the usual festival-family-themed antics of dancing, history, fine art, and folk exhibits, children's activities, videos, and mother-country food. Just don't call them Serbians.

"Trash Queen of Berlin" at On the Boards

Sara writes:

Hi Party V -

Fri-Sun, Oct 6-8... On the Boards starts the season with a bang with
Constanza Macras and her Berlin-based company Dorky Park. These
multi-national bohemian superstars mash up live rock, dance, sitcom
humor, MTV, old love letters, sexual crassness, and reality tv. This is
the kind of show people will be talking about all season.

The show comes to OtB on the heels of rave reviews and sold-out houses
at Dance Theater Workshop in New York and the Walker Art Center in
Minneapolis...

"the kind of show that generates wildfire word-of-mouth...if you can
picture a sequence including a rock ballad, a guy on one roller skate, a
striptease involving a flute and a neck brace, Vivaldi's 'The Four
Seasons', and an inflatable sheep... you're well on your way to
imagining the dizzying anarchy of 'Back to the Present.'" -The New York Sun

EMILIA- EP RELEASE PARTY @ Nectar

Brent writes:

EMILIA- EP RELEASE PARTY FRIDAY OCTOBER 6th @ Nectar

Most of y’all have heard all about Emilia by now. I’ve been speaking this girls praises for years. Well her career is now fully launched and this weekend is proving to be one of the biggest she’s experienced so far. She’s playing her first ever weekend gig at Nectar this Friday October 6th with Forgotten soul. DJ Shapeshifter rounds out the bill and keeps the party going.

Here’s the big deal however. Her record label (5 Points Records) is flying out to see this performance and Emilia is going to push it over THE TOP . Her live set is tight, as many of you have witnessed, but we’ve saved the big guns for this Friday’s event. She’s been working tirelessly with video editors, photographers and light designers to make this show a total mindblower. If you haven’t seen her, this is not to be missed. If you have seen her, you’ve never seen her like this before. Expect the mood of this show to be electric and know the band will be on fire. They hit the stage at 9:45. Don’t be late!

In other Emilia news her label’s been working hard to get her national attention and the “press” is starting to pay attention. This weeks she’s been featured on Windows Media Player and soundmojo.com did a feature on her personal story as it pertains to life and living through Hurricane Katrina. The digital release of the EP goes live on October 10th and for two weeks she’ll be a “featured artist” with an I-Tunes exclusive. This means exposure...exposure...exposure. You can buy the EP in advance at Friday’s show but for all you folks out of town get logged onto the I-Tunes store and buy it. It’s amazing!!!!!

Movie: GRANITO DE ARENA / GRAIN OF SAND

This is another free movie:

Saturday, Oct. 7, 7pm
FREE ADMISSION
GRANITO DE ARENA / GRAIN OF SAND
(Jill Friedberg, Seattle, 2005, BetaSP, 62min.)
For over 20 years, global economic forces have been dismantling public education in Mexico, but always in the constant shadow of popular resistance. GRANITO DE ARENA is the story of that resistancethe story of hundreds of thousands of public schoolteachers whose grassroots, non-violent movement took Mexico by surprise, and who have endured brutal repression in their 25-year struggle for social and economic justice in Mexicos public schools. Award-winning Seattle filmmaker, Jill Freidberg (THIS IS WHAT DEMOCRACY LOOKS LIKE), spent two years in southern Mexico documenting the efforts of over 100,000 teachers, parents, and students fighting to defend the countrys public education system. Freidberg combines footage of strikes and direct actions with 25 years worth of never-before-seen archival images to deliver a compelling and unsettling story of resistance, repression, commitment, and solidarity.
plays with

HOW TO BRING DEMOCRACY TO THE FISH
(Drew Christie, Sammamish, 2006, MiniDV, 2min.)
A satirical interpretation of imperialism and "democracy spreading" under the guises of a How-To video on seafood consumption.
and

AN OKLAHOMA PRIVATE JUST SAYS NO
(Patricia Boiko & Randy Rowland, Seattle, 2005, MiniDV, 8min.)
An Oklahoma private refuses to go back to Iraq when he is on leave in the US. If granted, he and his family will be the first Americans given refugee status in Canada.

Movie: Yellow

And another one...

Saturday, Oct. 7, 7pm
FREE ADMISSION
YELLOW
(Nick Peterson, Portland, 16mm>DVCam, 101min.)
The collaboration of filmmaker Nick Peterson and musician Eric Schopmeyer, YELLOW combines the sensibilities of Ernst Lubitsch's Hollywood musicals of the 1930s and the restrained photographic sense of Yasujiro Ozu to create a unique modern musical exploring the complexities of love, sex and relationships. The story follows cynical Natalie (Nora Ryan) and her interactions with new boyfriend Matt (Eric Schopmeyer) and best friend Christian (Nico Izambard). The clever original songs never upstage the film, but rather serve as integral parts of the story. Amazingly, they were recorded live on the set with the musicians accompanying off camera, lending a naturalness to the performances and transitions. Shot and edited completely on film, YELLOWs daring artistic approach makes the indie musical one of the most original features to come out of Portland in recent years.
plays with

HAND OF BRIDGE
(Curtis Taylor, Seattle, 2006, 16mm>BetaSP, 11min.)
An adaptation of the 1959 Samuel Barber/Gian Carlo Menotti comic chamber opera. Two married couples enjoying the comforts of post-war "Gracious Living" settle in to their nightly bridge game, and what lies beneath the shellac is revealed in four short set-pieces as each character reveals in turn what truly captivates their heart.

Radiohiro @ Shringara this Saturday

Osiris Indriya (what a stupid name) writes:

Phew!

I am finally starting to ground out after a crazy summer of travels both solo and on a bus with PURE Cirkus through Canada, New York, Boston, Asheville NC, and Northern Cali. Now I finally get to go through all the new music I collected and am working on to prepare for my big sets at the Oracle Gathering on October 28th and MAGNETIC II on November 11th (more on those in a minute).

But this weekend, I will be hanging with my Infinite Connections posse at the Capitol Hill Arts Center for the next installment of SHRINGARA – Seattle’s Asian Massive monthly!

Featuring:

Radiohiro (Karsh Kale Kollektiv - Chicago) Bringing Western and Asian culture together thru music has always been RadioHiro's main objective. After being blown away by the musical ferocity of John McLaughlin's SHAKTI release, he went on to offer his services to the legendary Tranquility Bass (exist dance/astralwerks), a group that notably founded trip hop and was responsible for the classic Indian electronic cut, Cantamilla (Birth of Cool II/MoWAX). Radiohiro by name, began in 1998 as a bi-weekly pirate FM radio and live internet broadcast, taking Asian Underground, Bhangra, and Bollywood music and combining it with modern day electronic Drum and Bass records. A studied musician/drummer, RadioHiro now combines his musical training with a profound love for Indian Classical music, re-writing the sound of Asian Underground with a dark, hard driving, yet melodic style. Radiohiro hits the turntables and drums in concert live on a regular basis and has been performing yearly at the Chicago World Music Festival, and other cultural events across the nation. Radiohiro can be heard streaming live exclusively on ethnotechno.com. Over the years Radiohiro has either worked with or shared the stage with this vast array of artists and record companies including: Quincy Jones, Matmos, Atari Teenage Riot, Rage Aginst The Machine, George Brooks, Larry Coryell, Bill Laswell, Steve Gorn, Hal Russell and the NRG Ensemble, Blue Note Records, Verve Records, Astralwerks, Stereolab, Sony Records, MCA Records, Ozzfest Radio, Artist Direct, Alligator Record, Garbage, Fiona Apple, Primus, Barenaked Ladies, Jamiroquai, Sean Lennon, Alice In Chains, Incubus, Train, Ben Folds Five, Underworld, Cibo Matto, Len, Jeff Buckley, The Fugees, System Of A Down, Lollapalooza, White Zombie, L7, Tupac Shakur, 24-7 Spies, New Line Cinema, Rolling Stone.com, Babes In Toyland, GBH, Discharge, Killing Joke, Toxic Reasons, Public Image Ltd. www.radiohiro.com/

GMP #27 - Happy Birthday to Who?

Nice idea:

A Very Merry UnBirthday Guerrillas!

This Saturday, October 7th is 'Happy Birthday to Who?' - so it's time to reveal all the details you need...

We'll be meeting at 10pm at the Rosebud at 719 E Pike St, between
Harvard & Boylston on E Pike on Capitol Hill. The place seems small
at first, but they open up the dining area after the restuarant
closes, and the space gets about twice as big - plus there's a nice
patio out back.

But more importantly, we have a nice clear view of people coming in,
which will come in handy at 11:30pm.

At precisely 11:30pm, we'll gather facing the doorway. The first
person to walk through the door is our guest of honor. (Synchronize
your watches at
http://www.timeandd ate.com/worldclo ck/city.html? n=234). In the
unlikely situation that two people walk in simultaneously, the taller
of the two will be the guest of honor.

The guest of honor should be greeted warmly by one and all, handed or
shown gifts and cards, and offered a birthday shot or drink by anyone
so inclined. Throughout the night they should get cake or cupcakes or
anything else we might have, and be treated like a king or queen.
They need to feel like we really think it's their birthday and we're
they're bestest friends EVER. Hopefully, they'll go along for the
ride. Free drinks? Gifts? Cake? Who wouldn't?

To avoid a Guerrilla being mistaken for our guest of honor, we need to
be sure that none of us arrives close to 11:30pm. So just like any
suprise party, PLEASE arrive prior to 11:15pm, or wait until about
11:45pm til the coast is clear.

If our first guest of honor should refuse to play along, we'll pick a
new one based on the same system - starting when the March Hare (dirty
bunny) yells: NEW GUEST!!!!

Now that the specifics are out of the way, get your costumes ready,
pick up a nice card or gift, prepare your best striptease, pack up the
party games, blow up the balloons, and start baking those cupcakes --
cuz we each have one 1 birthday to celebrate each year, but we've all
got 364 unbirthdays.

See you at 10pm on Saturday!

This week I would like to forward David Miller's pick. He writes:

Hello, all. My brilliant short film "Pickup" is now on YouTube. Watch, enjoy and share with your friends:

Pickup
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kq2M3Yzj7A.

Pickup, based on an autobiographical short cartoon story written by Mary Fleener and drawn by Pat Moriarity, tells a sordid tale of how one night, fueled by an angry break-up, Mary is charmed and seduced by a charismatic stranger with unexpected, humiliating and amusing consequences. Shot in black & white on digital video, Pickup is a stylistic tribute to the early Nouvelle Vague. Pickup stars Carol Roscoe, Jeff Polage, Melissa Roberts and John Paulsen as The Pickup.
