Events for 5/6 to 5/12/2005

Sorry for last week's email Tsunami! The letter went out multiple times probably because of a bug in my email program (inserting groups in groups in Outlook). I don't want to have that happen again and that's why I tried Mr.Outbox, which is a free service that the Three Imaginary Girls have been successfully using. Unfortunately they have a limit of 8000 characters per email and I have 9000 events to write about.

I ended up opening a Speakeasy account that will hopefully work. Only 10 readers got so annoyed with those multiple emails that they unsubscribed – which I can understand. I want to thank the other 1690 readers for their patience!

This week I’ve got a lot of unusual stuff for you: No Pants Day, an opening in NYC, gay rugby and an illegal casino. My favorite is definitely

No Pants Day

I am surprised the GMP folks have not pointed out this opportunity. The "No Pants Day" headquarters seem to be located in Austin, Texas. You should contact them if you are planning to participate in this event:

There are No Pants Day events going on all over the world, but we (the maintainers of this website) mostly live in Austin. So here's what's going on, err... here.

7-9 am. Capital Rally
Hanging out at the Capital, for the early-rising, hardcore celebrants. We're gonna promote No Pants Day to people early in the morning downtown. It'll be a blast to be out in no pants when those not in the know are milling about doing their work. Meet on 11th, in front of the gates, just south of the Capital.

9am-5pm. West Mall
The main event. No Pants Day Rally on the West Mall on the UT campus. Shirts, music, games, songs, handing out fliers, and just plain celebrating.

7pm- Miniature Golf
Mini Golf at Peter Pan Mini Golf. 1207 Barton Springs.

So, here's some things we need for The West Mall-
*musical instruments
*frisbees
*snacks
*handmade signs.

Oh, and don't wear pants on Friday.

Black Orpheus @ Kozy Kino

Apologies for the flying shrapnel at the Underground screening. I should have
warned those in the hotseats but that would’ve then spoiled the surprise.

The days grow longer and warmer as the end of the Kozy Kino Temporary
Autonomous Zone sadly draws near. With less than two weeks remaining,
we are moving the Kozy Kino outside to the rooftop for a freiluft screening
of Marcel Camus’ Black Orpheus. This beautifully shot adaptation of the Greek
myth is set in mid-20th century Rio de Janeiro during Carnival and the cinematography
takes full advantage of this. Brazilian landscapes and the colorful spectacle of Carnival
radiate from the screen. Simply to watch it makes you feel 5 degrees warmer and want
to have a shaved ice and wear golden hotpants and feathers. All is beauty in this film…
to the tragic transcendant ending. Come enjoy a hopefully pleasant evening on the Kozy
Kino freiluft rooftop! Bring a sweater if you chill easily... maybe even a blanket.

Drink Special: involves crushed or shaved ice and limes… maybe cane liquor.

For those not yet in the know….

The Kozy Kino is an underground cinema that infuses diverse film programming
with thematic beverage service. Scheduling is now more frantic and desperate, but
we still throw down the homemade cushions, fire up the video beamer and
concoct delicious refreshments to wash down the freshly popped corn.
Each featured film is a ‘wonder of cinema’ in its own way… coupled with shorts
and inspirational drink specials. It’s a cheap night of uninstitutionalized
quality entertainment and a fine example of underground economy.
Come out and be inspired while it lasts.

Kozy Kino – Black Orpheus
FRIDAY May 6th, 9pm
1809 Minor Ave.
Entrance – $1 - one U.S. dollar (Canadians welcome but not their money)

Down the Tempo @ Catwalk.

I only got the flyer:

IMPUTOR? Showcase @ CHAC’s Lower Level

Hi Party Volcano. I wanted to tell you about this groovy lil thing Autonomat is doing Friday... we've got an IMPUTOR? showcase with Vells, Plastiq Phantom, Catbees, and myself, Sara Jayne. This show is in keeping with Autonomat's endeavors to push the envelope on anti-genre show curation... we put on hip-hop, emo, rock, indie, floor-stomping techno, laptop chin-scratching, booty bass, interpretive dance, and even harpists! It's all part of our mission to unite the fractured and wholly groovy subgenres of the Seattle scene. Join us for...

IMPUTOR? Showcase feat.
Vells
Plastiq Phantom
Catbees
Sara Jayne

Vells' first full-length recording, Flight From Echo Falls, a collaborative production effort of Modest Mouse's Jeremiah Green and Plastiq Phantom's Darrin Wiener, could be mistaken for a dusted-off artifact from a timeless time. Tristan Marcum's other worldly deliverance of emotive vocal detail brings you songs that combine the transcendent elements of wistful longing, hopefulness, and Elvisian fervor. The formidable rhythm of Jeremiah Green is the driving soul-engine for Tristan's lofty lyrical train. This psychedelic pop gem is a divergence from the mundane and confronts the listener with the inherent divinity of music. An impressive leap from the previous EP produced by Phil Ek, Vells have managed to fuse light and dark into a visceral musical experience that's good for the soul. Varied inspirations and combined visions characterize Vells' sweeping, lush sound; ultimately creating songs ancient and new, delivered with sincerity and spirit.

Since the band's formation in 2001, Vells lineup has evolved into Jeremiah Green, Adam McCollom, Tristan Marcum, and Mary Thinnes setting the group on an exciting path of musical exploration. Vells' debut EP was recorded in 2002 by Phil EK, and released in early 2003 by Seattle based label, Luckyhorse Industries. Vells music has been compared to bands including the Kinks, Beatles, and Shins for their melodic and hooky song writing and energetic delivery. These elements combined with their eclectic inspirations and radical visions characterize the Vells' sound.

The Consul @ Chop Suey

Dearest Party Volcano,
I've been a subscriber for years, don't know why I haven't sent you listings more often, but this here's a good one. The Consul plays 3-piece instrumental dub-jungle-funkrock and I've never heard anyone like us in Seattle. Following up a few great sets at The Showbox last month, we'll be at Chop Suey this Saturday. You can check out pics, MP3, etc at www.interactivejack.com. Show info follows. Thanks!

There’s been a lot of talk about this here band, maybe, maybe too much talk. Less talkin’ and more rockin’ is what the people say. This longwinded jibjab claptrap jawflap business is just over our heads. We like to rock, and we’re not talking about rockin’ philosophy, or rockin’ subquantum particle physics, or rockin’ intergalactic sci-fi lightsaber RNA decryption neuro-harmoonical reprocessization, or rockin’ hyperloquacious flibbety flobbety floo type noise, either. We’re simple folk here, descended from trailblazing westward pioneers, salt of the earth, straight shooters, handy with the hands, if you take my meaning, what you see is what you get.
In honor of the simple, rustic nature of this rugged frontier society of ours, The Consul has prepared a stripped down, no frills, hand-hewn set of raw, unpolished rock mayhem to commemorate our homesteading, claim jumping, where-no-white-man-has-ever-gone-before initiation into the terra incognita of one of Seattle’s premier rock venues, Chop Suey. Don’t forget your pickaxe and tobacco plugs.
By way of recognition of the momentousness of this unprecedented occurrence, The Consul has flensed our usual set of all non-rock elements. Prepare yourselves for a rock only neuro-harmonic reprogramming session fully devoid of any and all sonic content of the less-than-rock variety.
Joining us in our Westward expansion in search of our Destiny Manifest are rock legends Sol, Place 2 Hyde and Trainyard.
Doors at 9, Consul at 11.

$7 advance tickets are available from all Galactic Emissaries, Consular Officers, and Ambassadorial Representatives. Day of show tickets will gouge you for $10. Advance tickets can be purchased at www.interactivejack.com or by emailing your name, phone #, and how many tickets you need to savvyjake@hotmail.com.

Fundraiser to send the Infernal Noise Brigade to battle with the G8
Scotland this July. We risk our asses, you risk a little money.

The Program

Show + Tell is an ongoing program of the Seattle dance organization, Kick. Kick partners with organizations and dance artists to find new ways to promote dance. The Kick-led discussion following is an opportunity for the audience to find out what makes this Seattle community of dance filmmakers tick.

The Producers

Kick is a dance organization, co-directed by Seattle dance veterans Kara O'Toole and Crispin Spaeth. Kick creates opportunity, visibility, and communication by presenting dance events that connect dance artists, organizations, and the public. Kick aims to advance the appreciation of dance as an art form, and raise the profile of dance as a cultural resource in the Pacific Northwest. Show + Tell is Kick’s longest running program.

33 Fainting Spells, led by choreographers Gaelen Hanson and Dayna Hanson, is a Seattle based company making original work in dance-theater since 1994. Out of keen interest in the hybrid art form of dance film, 33 Fainting Spells started New Dance Cinema, a biennial festival of dance film, in 1999. With Northwest Film Forum, 33 Fainting Spells has co-produced three editions of New Dance Cinema. 33 began creating work in dance film in 2000 with the short 16mm film Measure. The company is at work on an ongoing series of shorts beginning with Entry (2003.)

Opening of Judith Kindler’s "Journal" @ Cornish

Hi Don,

Please join us for the opening of Judith Kindler’s exhibit Journal, on Tuesday May 10th.

Inspired by many years of journal-keeping, these works offer visual explorations of the everyday questions one ponders.

Hope you can make it to the opening,

Adriana

Inspired by her journals from the past 30 years, Kindler documents questions she has asked of the I Ching (Book of Changes). The use of the I Ching accesses an ancient Chinese tradition, using a philosophical understanding of one’s position in relationship to a question posed. Revealing the trials and reflections of daily life, her work considers journal keeping as an ongoing dialogue with oneself. Through visual exploration, the artist exposes the commonality of the human experience, our search for answers and insight as well as our blindness to personal failings.

Don Volcano’s Computer Corner.

I tell you upfront that the following links are not for you if you don’t have a strong stomach or if you dress up like a clown and demonstrate downtown with a sign saying "We are not protesting!"

You are still here? Okay then let’s get started. (BTW, these links have been provided by my lovely girlfriend Madeline, who gives me the best presents.)

Sometimes you hit a site with an article that is so disturbing that you … want to continue reading. For example the BBC had an article in 2003 that started like this:

"When Tanya Andrews returned from a recent family holiday in Costa Rica, she had no idea she had brought back a gruesome souvenir."

I know you want to read the rest:

Invasion of the Bodysnatchers
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/3236294.stm

Museums are also a great source to educate you about nature:

Decomposition
http://www.deathonline.net/decomposition/decomposition/index.htm

And then there is Wikipedia. What would I do without it? Where else would I learn about people like Gayle Laverne Grinds? Ms Grinds was a resident of Stuart, Florida, who gained notoriety following her death. Grinds, who was 4'10" and 478 pounds, had been sitting on the same couch since 1998 following a broken leg, and her skin had fused inseparably with the upholstery. I love it that Wikipedia highlights words like "couch" and "lifestyle" as they are providing links to other topics:

Gayle Laverne Grinds (August 27, 1964 - August 11, 2004).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gayle_grinds

I think that’s enough for this week.

Don Volcano.
