Treasures Of Long Gone John @ Northwest Film Forum

Kirsten (Roq La Rue) writes:

There is some great stuff happening in Seattle this month...first of all the documentary “Treasures Of Long Gone John” is playing this weekend at the Northwest Film Forum. For those of you who don’t know who he is, he’s the mastermind behind the indie label “Sympathy For The Record Industry” and also one of the top collectors of Pop Surrealism/Lowbrow artwork. He is a true character and I’m excited to see this documentary-which also interviews people like Mark Ryden, Camille Rose Garcia, Kozik, and pretty much most of the Pop Surrealism movers and shakers.

Here are more details:

SEATTLE PREMIERE
THE TREASURES OF LONG GONE JOHN
(Greg Gibbs, USA, 2006, DV-CAM, 95min.)

Sponsored by Easy Street Records and KEXP

Long Gone John, self-described anti-mogul of the legendary Sympathy for the Record Industry label, gives a tour of all that he holds dear. His penchant for collecting ephemeral objects and paintings became his livelihood when he translated his passion for acquisition into a thriving part of the record industry. Without ever signing a contract he launched the careers of Holly Golightly, The Tards and The White Stripes - a small sample of artists on the 750+ records he has produced. Moreover, Long Gone's collection represents a who's who of the current so-called lowbrow art world. Featuring interviews and work by Tim Biskup, Clayton Brothers, Coop, Frank Kozik, Mark Ryden, Todd Schorr and scores more.

Northwest Film Forum is located at 1515 12th Ave, on Capital Hill
Between Pike and Pine. Tickets are $5 NWFF members, $6 seniors, $8
general. Tickets can be purchased at the door starting 30 minutes before
the show, or in advance online or by calling (800)838-3006. For

Structured (in) Time @ the 1020 Building

STRUCTURED (in) TIME

A mixed media exhibition of time based work.

Life is no longer expressed in terms of a beginning, middle or end- contemporary culture has left us with a new vocabulary, that which includes: stop, rewind, slow-motion, fast-forward, condense, freeze frame and pause.

Recent developments in technology have led to an unprecedented explosion in contemporary art-making, which has drastically broadened and altered our interpretation of ‘time.” Through the mediums of video, sound, painting, photography and installation/performance, artists have been invited to explore and probe the tensions embedded in recent experiences in time.

Memory, narratives, consciousness, dreams, cyclical events and fragmented duration; these are all themes this diverse range of artists have chosen to engage with.

Featuring:

Elizabeth Block, San Fran (video)
Sheilah Wilson, Santa Fe (video)
Evri Kwong, San Fran (painting)
Kimberly Trowbridge, Seattle (painting)
Eric McNeill, Seattle (LED screens)
Amber Low, Seattle (video/installation/performance)
As always, full bar, entertainment, and engaging conversation await...

Dirty Martinez at ToST

Dirty Martinez at ToST

The Dirty Martinez show is back for its first show of 2007! The format is
simple -- we spend one hour with a guest host playing whatever music they
like, and then we have a live act for you! This weeks' guest host is Laz
Harris, and music guests are Henta and Ludington GT.

You may recall their fabulous live set at Critical Massive. Both GT and
Henta sing as well as play with multiple keyboards and sequencers at the
same time. They also performed at Center Camp Cafe in Burning Man 2006 and
were invited back for a second set!

This evening will be a pod cast and has an interesting format:

The nite starts at 9PM with DJ Diem and Laz Harris playing music for an hour.

10:00PM Henta and GT will perform, a set mainly of Henta's downtempo,
triphop and ambient tunes, with some funky house. This set will be full of
lush vocals, live synths and computer beatz.

11:00PM is GT's live dj set, a standard Ludington GT banger of progessive
house, tech house, and breaks and will be a live PA on computer and
synths.

This night is FREE! Come down and enjoy!

Park Work Parties

Last month's windstorms took a toll on King County's park system. No
county park was left unscathed, with backcountry trails at the largely
undeveloped Cougar Mountain, Grand Ridge and Soaring Eagle parks
sustaining some of the worst damage as hundreds of trees were toppled by
wind.

Marymoor Park in Redmond, one of the county's most popular parks,
sustained heavy damage during the Dec. 14 windstorm. But volunteers have
been helping county crews in a massive cleanup. Volunteers from the
Washington Trails Association, Seattle Running and Washington
Backcountry Horsemen have pitched in to help clear trails.

The county says more volunteers are needed. A number of volunteer work
parties are scheduled at the hardest-hit parks: Work parties are
scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday and Jan. 13 at Marymoor Park to
clear limbs and branches, and other debris from trails and
walkways.

Work parties also are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Jan. 13
at Grand Ridge Park in Issaquah and Soaring Eagle Park in
Sammamish.

For more information or to sign up, call volunteer-program
coordinators Tina Miller at 206-296-2990 or Laurie Clinton at
206-296-4452. They also can be e-mailed at tina.miller@metrokc.gov, or
laurie.clinton@metrokc.gov.

Work parties will also meet daily Tuesday through Jan. 14, from 8:30 a.m.
to 2:30 p.m. at Cougar Mountain Regional Wildland Park near
Issaquah. Call the Washington Trails Association (206-625-1367) to get
information or volunteer.

Individuals or groups are welcome to volunteer. Large groups also can
arrange separate work parties.

MOME: The New Guard @ Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery

Hi folks,

I wanted to send a reminder about our new exhibition opening at the
Fanta store this Saturday, which I curated with Mr. Gary Groth
(details below). I'm very excited about it and also a little bit
freaked that no one is going to show thanks to those meany Seahawk
bullies who have hijacked the evening for their stupid playoff game.
Please help strike a blow against the dominant paradigm and come look
at some lovely comic art that night, rather than watch a bunch of
"tight ends" attempt to penetrate the "end zone" of a bunch of burly
"cowboys".

Details below, but it's Saturday night at 6PM in Georgetown.

Happy 2007,

Eric

here are more details:

MOME: The New Guard exhibition of emerging comics artists opens on
Saturday, January 6 at Seattle’s Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery

Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery rings in the New Year with an
exciting show of new cartooning talent in MOME: The New Guard. Based
on the essential quarterly anthology edited by Gary Groth and Eric
Reynolds, the exhibition showcases stimulating new approaches to the
conventions of narrative art. Time magazine reports, “Where most
anthologies have, at best, a 50/50 hit/miss ratio, MOME manages all-
hit, don’t miss.” Discover why at this don’t miss exhibition opening
Saturday, January 6, 2007 at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery,
located at 1201 S. Vale Street in Seattle’s lively Georgetown
neighborhood.

MOME: The New Guard offers a diverse group of exciting young artists
from across the county and around the globe. Among the exhibiting
artists is Sophie Crumb, expatriate daughter of legendary cartoonists
Robert and Aline, currently residing in the south of France. Also
showing is multi-talented Zak Sally, who in addition to his prolific
cartooning gained notoriety with his alternative rock band Low. Los
Angeles artist Tim Hensley also has a background in music. His father
plays piano in Neil Diamond’s band, and Hensley once composed a
soundtrack to Daniel Clowes’ graphic novel Like a Velvet Glove Cast
in Iron. Similarly, Jeffrey Brown recently animated a video for
successful Seattle rock band Death Cab for Cutie. Others contributing
recent work to the exhibition include Andrice Arp, Gabrielle Bell,
Jonathan Bennett, Martin Cendreda, David Heatley, Paul Hornschemeier,
R. Kikuo Johnson, Anders Nilsen, John Pham and Kurt Wolfgang.

This exhibition is organized by Gary Groth and Eric Reynolds. Groth
is founder and co-publisher of Fantagraphics Books and editor of many
prestigious publications including The Comics Journal. In addition to
his editorial work on MOME and The Complete Crumb Comics, Reynolds
serves as Director of Publicity, Marketing and Promotions for
Fantagraphics Books. Reynolds is also a published cartoonist and
performing rock musician.

MOME: The New Guard opens with a festive reception on Saturday,
January 6 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. The editors and selected artists will
be present to sign copies of the newly published Winter 2007 issue.
DJ David James will spin eclectic esoteric tunes, and admission, as
always, is free. In its infancy, Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery
has attracted large, enthusiastic audiences from throughout the

Global Dance Night to Benefit Local After-School Global Leadership Program

Global Dance Night to Benefit Local After-School Global Leadership Program

On January 6th, 2007, Seattle's only Global Music monthly, JUICE, will stage a benefit for OneWorld Now!, an after school global leadership program offering Arabic & Chinese language, leadership classes and study abroad scholarships to underserved high school students in the Seattle area.

Darek Mazzone, long-time host of Wo'Pop on non-commercial radio station KEXP 90.3FM, produces JUICE, Seattle 's only club night focusing on international music. Each month Mazzone and his collaborators choose a charity that focuses on international work as the beneficiary of the evening and proceeds from the night go directly to the selected charity. Northwest Immigration Rights Project received almost $1,000 from JUICE on October 7th and Bahia Street almost $1,300 on December 2nd.

On January 7th, Mazzone will be sharing the decks with DJ Rhythma. Net proceeds will benefit OneWorld Now!.

"Wo' Pop is an amazing program that spotlights the range and depth of international music," says Darek Mazzone , KEXP's Wo'Pop DJ. "Often, the countries where this music originates are deeply impoverished. I want to give back a little to these cultures for the great pleasure their music has given to me and to fans of my show. KEXP and Wo'Pop do a great job of exposing people to these sounds. JUICE takes the experience one step further and also involves people in helping those less fortunate than themselves."

About OneWorld Now!

OneWorld Now! is an award-winning after school global leadership program based in Seattle , WA . OneWorld Now! is one of the only programs in the nation offering Arabic language to public high school students and was recently recognized as "one of the most innovative after school programs in the nation." OneWorld Now!'s mission is to provide international learning experiences to underserved youth through world language studies, transformational leadership training, study abroad scholarships, and college and career opportunities. More information at www.oneworldnow.org

About KEXP's Wo'Pop

Wo'Pop regularly features Brazilian D&B, French and Cuban Hip Hop, South African Kwaito, Bhangra and Bollywood from Bombay and London , Malabax from Senegal , Ragga Dub from Brixton and Tokyo , and anything else that producers create from the 6 corners of the world.

About Juice

Each month, KEXP's DJ Darek Mazzone with Rebecca Campeau and Eric Schmidt (DJ Rhythma), along with special guests create a vibe that blends Latin, South Asian, Brazilian, African, and other global flavors into a funky night that is unique in Seattle .
