2 Foot Yard @ On The Boards

Sara writes:

Hey Party Volcano,

There are two music events coming up at On the Boards that are worth checking out – the first is Friday April 21 - a concert by 2 Foot Yard - this fantastic San Francisco-based music trio (cello, violin and percussion w/ vocals) that easily transverses a wide terrain of music from avant-classical to punk & art song to pop song. Their bandleader Carla Kihlstedt also plays with Sleepytime Gorilla Museum and the Tin Hat Trio. The talented Khaela Maricich (The Blow) from Portland opens with “dance music you can think to”. ($18)

And next Friday April 28th we are so thrilled to bring the wonderful music critic for the New Yorker, Alex Ross – who will do an iPod tour of music in the 20th Century to the present. Ross’ expertise provocatively ranges from Bach and to Beyonce and hearing his thoughts about 20th Century music should be amazing. ($12)

Go to www.ontheboards.org to learn more, buy tickets & listen to music clips… (student discounts available)

Thanks!

High Dive Celebrates it’s ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY

High Dive Celebrates it’s ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY with a solid weekend of shows, April 21 and 22nd.

Who: High Dive, Fremont’s only rock club!!!
Who’s Playing: Diamondhand (feat Shawn Smith) The Feelings Hijackers (feat. Chris Ballew of Pres of United States of America), Mercir, Velella Velella, Head Like a Kite
When: Friday and Saturday April 21st and 22nd
Where: High Dive 513 N 36th st Seattle, WA 98103
Why: High Dive has made it through it's first year by establishing itself as a premier rock club in Seattle that hosts the best northwest artists. Now they plan to celebrate with an evening of debauchery, strong drinks and great music.
What: The weekend bash begins on Friday April 21st with a great show featuring Mercir, Velella Velella and Head like a Kite. The party continues to rage on Saturday April 22nd with Seattle legend Shawn Smith and his new band, Diamondhand. Sharing the bill for the night, the Feelings Hijackers (Featuring Chris Ballew of the Presidents of the United States of America)

High Dive has accomplished a small miracle, getting Fremont to ROCK. A year ago Eric Poll bought the failing Fremont bar, Suite G. Upon hiring Interface Booking and Mgt, a local talent agency that put such clubs as ToST and Nectar Lounge on the Seattle music map, he turned it into a rock venue, redesigned the interior and launched it into the spotlight with solid bookings and a free, all you can drink, “industry party”.

Over the last year High Dive has gained the attention of the Seattle music community, the press and most recently KEXP, as they begin their monthly live, in club-broadcast of Audioasis. All this local attention is starting to translate to national recognition. Over the last 6 months High Dive has been inundated with emails from national booking agencies requesting shows for their touring artist. All this hasn’t gone to the head of High Dive and it’s talent brokers, Interface. Together they still stay focused on supporting local music and give great artist a place to call home.

Circus Contraption is having a Pajama Party

Hello Don Volcano--

Circus Contraption is opening it's own spring season with a party, after selling out the Moisture Festival two nights in a row! We had great success with "StripJoint!" for the last two years, but wanted to do something a little different this time (there's already PLENTY of burlesque in this town). Always looking for another opportunity to amuse ourselves and others, we will be hosting a big Pajama Party at Consolidated Works on Saturday April 22. It's for a good cause, too-- to help our troupe make a triumphant return to New York City for a 7-week run (we made quite a splash there last year)! So please invite your readers to come play with us!

Here's the scoop:

Circus Contraption's Pajama Party
A benefit for "Grand American Traveling Dime Museum" in New York City
DATE: Saturday, April 22, 2006
TIME: 9pm to the wee hours
PLACE: Consolidated Works, 500 Boren Ave N., Seattle WA 98109
TICKET PRICES: $15 in advance; $18 at the door
WHERE TO BUY TICKETS: http://www.BrownPaperTickets.com/event/4173; 1-800-838-3006

This event is 21 and over.
Guests are encouraged to wear pajamas.

Circus Contraption, Seattle's original one-ring circus, hosts a Pajama Party on Saturday, April 22: an evening of fun and frolic complete with special guests, unusual and daring party games, live and DJ'd music, full bar, tasty snacks and plenty of surprises for their pajama-clad guests.

Circus Contraption has put its mischievous little minds together to create a juvenile atmosphere for adults only: Seattle's Consolidated Works will be converted into a pillow-and-blankie-strewn giant living room where we'll lounge in our jammies and enjoy a variety of unique amusements, both naughty and nice. Here are just a few of the treats in store for all the boys and girls:

- a video bedtime story by Reggie Watts
- Big-screen Atari Tournament
- Alibi Room DJ Pauly D
- Larger-than-life multi-media Ouija Board Installation by Diana Falchuk and
Tim Weeks
- Spin the Bottle with Special Guests
- Louie Foxx's shadow puppetry
- Jeppa K. Hall as Queen Shmooquan!
- World's Biggest Twister Game
- Sheri Brown as Bloody Mary!
- Sleeping Beauties Burlesque
- Truth or Dare
- The Chinigans
- Dr. Calamari & Acrophelia
- aerial performance by The Aerialistas
- live music to cap off the night by Orkestar Zirkonium and the Circus Contraption Band
- and do we EVEN have to mention... PILLOW FIGHTS!!!

With this event, Circus Contraption hopes to raise funds to take our "Grand American Traveling Dime Museum" show back to New York City this summer for a seven-week run. The critically acclaimed show, which premiered in Seattle and San Francisco in 2004 to sell-out crowds, made waves last September in New York City. Time Out New York described "Dime Museum" as "Pure genius," and NYTheatre.com wrote," Chances to see shows this fun come along rarely at best."

"We've all been to enough parties where people stand around and look at each other," contends acrobat Evelyn Bittner of Circus Contraption. "We wanted to host the kind of party that we would want to go to, where we can all play and join in the fun." Circus Contraption's infamous party-fundraisers, such as the wildly successful "StripJoint!" of 2004 and 2005, drew crowds which lined up around the block.

"Circus Contraption's Pajama Party" has similar expectations-- so don't be surprised to see lines of nightie-clad revelers in front of Consolidated Works on Saturday night April 22, 2006. Doors open at 9pm. Advance tickets are available for $15 at http://www.BrownPaperTickets.com or 1-800-838-3006; tickets at the door are $18. (It's not required to wear pajamas-- it just won't be as much fun!)

Measure for Measure by William Shakespeare

Adriana writes:

Hi Don,

I am pleased to let you know about the upcoming Cornish College production of Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure, running April 27-29 at Broadway Performance Hall.

This timely production explores issues of lust, political intrigue and deception, and in the words of Theater Department Chair, Richard E.T. White, is one of Shakespeare’s best plays.

More information is below. Please let me know if you have questions or would like to learn more.

Thanks,

Adriana

There is also "Hamlet: A Comic Masterpiece" an outdoor production (read: free) runs for two weekends on the Volunteer Park Stage, April 21-23 and April 28-30 at 3:30 pm. But I don't like those shows, because it's Hamlet performed by Clowns. That's not funny.

Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure

from April 27-29, at Broadway Performance Hall. Set in Vienna, this Cornish College production explores issues of politics, lust, deception and intrigue.

In Measure for Measure, the city of Vienna is falling apart with crime and moral decay. The Duke appoints the upright and ethically rigid Angelo to set things in order. Angelo institutes a clampdown on morally suspect behavior; however, privately his own sexual impulses betray him as he gives in to his lust for Isabella, a young religious novice. Things are further complicated because the Duke, thought to be away, is in fact, lurking around the city in disguise, increasingly concerned about Angelo’s authoritarianism.

Director Jack Greenman adapts Shakespeare’s most complex and morally ambiguous play to create a portrait of a society torn between justice and punishment, freedom and license, retribution and redemption.

Measure for Measure will be staged at the Broadway Performance Hall, located at 1625 Broadway, at Pine Street, in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood.
