"They Shoot Painters, Don’t They?" @ CoCA

I like these kinds of events except for the auction. The auction is on Saturday and will cost $20-$50. Why do I need to pay in order to able to pay more? I don't pay anything in order to get into Whole Foods or Safeway. There is an easy workaround for that: visit CoCA on Friday and see the artists in action. That's probably more interesting anyways.

24-Hour Painting Marathon & Auction
“They Shoot Painters, Don’t They?”

From 9am on Friday until 9am on Saturday, a select group of Seattle’s finest artists will gather at Center of Contemporary Art (CoCA) to paint for 24 straight hours. Fighting back sleep and fighting off the clock, these artists are definitely not sitting around waiting for paint to dry—but rather have generously and willingly agreed to participate in one of Seattle’s favorite and most original art auction fundraisers. Now in its 13th year, the 24-Hour Painting Marathon & Auction, allows the public to mingle with artists during their creative process – and then bid on the work created. The works painted during the 24-Hour frenzied burst of creativity will be auctioned off on Saturday night during a gala celebration and the proceeds will be divided between the artists and non-profit CoCA.

Support CoCA, support Seattle’s local artists, and bid on the chance to walk away with an amazing painting(s) at extremely attractive prices.

WHEN:
The Gala and Auction is on Saturday, October 22
Doors open at 6 p.m. with silent auctions from 6 - 9 p.m.
Live auction starts at 9 p.m.

WHERE:
Saturday’s auction gala will be at Pravda Studios, 1406 10th Ave.
(Capitol Hill)

(You are also welcome to stop by CoCA on Friday,
October 21 from 6 p.m. – 2 a.m. to see the painters in action.)
Friday’s painting portion will be at CoCA, 410 Dexter Ave N (S Lake Union)

Tickets (VIP-$50 for one, or $80 per couple; General Admission is $20) can be purchased at www.cocaseattle.org. Please note for the VIP price you will get a table, wine, appetizers and the best seat for viewing the auction.

Zioncheck for President @ Elliott Bay Bookstore

Phil writes:

Hello!

If you missed my Bumbershoot reading for Zioncheck for President, don't worry. There's another chance! And this one won't cost you $28!

I'm reading at Elliott Bay Bookstore this Friday, October 21st, at 7:30 pm. Please come out. A book party will follow the event, so if you're interested email or call me and I'll give you the details on that, too.

Excerpted in The Stranger (the same dang paper that fired me!), lauded by book blogs such as Bookslut and MaudNewton.com, Zioncheck for President: A True Story of Idealism and Madness in American Politics is, according to Mo Rocca, "funny, suspenseful, and refreshingly bitter." A "deadpan comic novel," says Sam Lipsyte, author of Home Land.

See you all there!

Phil Campbell

You don't know who Phil Campbell is? He used to work at the Stranger and was fired as far as I remember - which is a complement in these days. When I met him he was introduced to me as Emily Hall's boyfriend (Emily used to write the Art Section in the Stranger), who eventually became her fiancé and then her hubby. They met at a Stranger Xmas party and apparently hit it off. Unfortunately I never get invited to the Stranger's Xmas parties but I have heard that I would find enough material for at least three of my PV columns called "New Directions in Alcohol Consumption". Either way, they got married and soon after Emily quit her job and they moved to New York City. He got a job at FOX Sport Channel and she is writing on her novel. (curtain)

Now you know everything I know. But that doesn't help you in making a decision whether the reading will be any good, does it? I think Phil is funny and I like him but I haven't read his book. So I'll give it a speculative thumbs up.

Elliott Bay Bookstore this Friday, October 21st, at 7:30 pm.

Katrina Fundraiser Party

Katrina? I thought we are at Wilma. Katrina was 12 letters ago!
Either way, this is from the Burning Man list.

Hippocampus and friends are throwing a party to raise money for a
Katrina survivor (Mage - pronounced Maggie) who lost everything back in September.
We've gifted her an RV from our camp and now need to raise money to get
her back on her feet and back supporting her community (she provides
services to battered women in her rural Mississippi town and runs an
animal rescue program).

October 21, 9PM-2AM.

The "Big Building". 3600 E. Marginal Way South, Seattle
$10 at the door, and cheap drinks.
DJs, dancing, our art car - Hearsilla Queen of the Desert with her
stripper pole operational.

Charlie Murphy @ Moore Theater

Reggie Watts is opening for Charlie Murphy. What an odd combination. I like both of them. Actually I didn't know about Eddie Murphy's brother Charlie until recently when I was watching the 2nd season of the Dave Chapelle Show. Chapelle show #5 of season 2 introduces Charlie Murphy's Hollywood Stories in which Murphy tells the story of how he met Rick James (Super Freak, Give it to me Baby) and how they beat each other up during the next decade. Dave Chapelle plays Rick James and I promise you that you will laugh tears as I did. I watched it at least three times and I almost peed into my pants every time. The other Hollywood Story is about Charlie losing against Prince playing basketball (shirt against blouses) - very funny but it doesn't beat Rick James. Charlie Murphy is rough but if you like it rough you will have a good time at the Moore.

Reggie will in town for only one week, but in that week he will perform his comedy at the Mirabeau Room's 'Unhinged' comedy night, appear on 107.7 The End's morning show, open for Charlie Murphy at the Moore Theater during the Seattle Comedy Festival, be the featured vocalist at Jumbalaya and then headline the Showbox with Maktub.

"...a brilliant comedian....a tremendously funny man." -- The Stranger

Bagge, Gregory, Woodring @ Lake City Library

Eric writes:

Friends,

Fantagraphics' very own neighborhood, luscious Lake City, is getting
a new library branch this weekend. Saturday brings a whole host of
Opening Day activities at the new Lake City Branch, notably a panel
devoted to its friendly neighborhood comics publisher. Join
Fantagraphics publishers Gary Groth and Kim Thompson, along with
authors Peter Bagge, Jim Woodring and Roberta Gregory for a special
afternoon discussion about the contemporary comics landscape. Seattle
is blessed with probably the greatest library system in the country,

your local library!

Free Party @ 911 MEDIA ARTS CENTER

Brad writes:

I don't do this very often, but wanted to let you know about a FREE party/event with promise that we have coming up on Saturday, Oct. 22nd. If you think it sounds interesting, please please please feel free to include it in next week's Party Volcano listings.

THANK YOU!!!

911 MEDIA ARTS CENTER is extremely pleased to announce a FREE music/multi-media showcase on Saturday, October 22nd, featuring Seattle’s own Noisettes with, live from Albuquerque, NM, Summon the Meteors. Both of these groups play live music combined with projected background multi-media visuals prepared specifically for this one-night event. As a teary-eyed thank you to all our friends who have supported 911 Media Arts Center during this really fucked-up year, we welcome you to this event ABSOLUTELY FREE! Bring your friends, guzzle beer, and celebrate the return of good times at 911. Doors open at 7pm, music starts at 8pm - all ages event.

Summon the Meteors, is an Albuquerque-based live audio/visual outfit comprised of Skiv Borealis and Saul Rodgar, currently on a roadtrip tour up the west coast. The twosome play live instrumentation to ad hoc visuals in just about any kind of setting.

Although they prefer to be considered a kick-ass wedding party act, they have been mistaken by some as the current incarnation of Zorba the Greek. Their current jobs are as live targets for the Marine Corps training facilities (good money in this, folks).

Rounding out the bill will be the Noisettes – your guides to the far-reaching corners of human hearing. From their native galaxy to Earth's atmosphere, this psychedelic live sounds ensemble brings music that must be measured in G-forces – BETTER BUCKLE UP!

A little bit about CO-OP...
Every Sunday evening we'll be throwing down everything from tiny to big
techhouse, acid, techno/electro, discopunk and everything else inbetween.
Musically, this is NOT your standard Chapel affair. Socially, it's a time
for us to reconvene from our weekend festivities and come together to
celebrate good people, ideas, and music. Hosted by Anton Bomb.
