SLIDELUCK POTSHOW VIII in Manhattan

Hearty Greetings,

It’s that time again. Yes, it is time to gather once again for food, drink, and a slideshow like no other. That’s right, SLIDELUCK POTSHOW VIII is to be held on Saturday, November 18th, at Neo Studios in Manhattan. As some of you may remember, this is a beautiful and spacious Noho location with studios on two floors. The theme of the slideshow is Energy and the theme of the potluck is Awesome.

I would like to note that Slideluck Potshow is in process of becoming a non-profit (501c3 pending.) In order to keep Slideluck going and growing, while preserving its integrity, we will not be asking for monetary donations as a requirement for entrance. Rather, we will be accepting donations and sponsorship on a rolling basis as well as throughout the evening.

Although financial support is critical to Slideluck’s future, we would like to emphasize participation in the potluck by asking guests to arrive with something good to drink and tasty, creative additions to the feast.

The submission deadline is Monday, November 6th and all of the details can be found on the website. We are looking for thoughtful, unpredictable, inventive and humorous interpretations on the theme of Energy. Clearly this is a broad, loaded topic and we would like tackle it from as many angles as possible. Contributors are not required to show work within the theme, but it is encouraged. Please extend this invitation to anyone who might be interested in showing work.

Thanks for your time and we look forward to seeing you soon.

Best,
Casey

Jennifer Gately will be present at the opening reception and will present a cash prize of $1,000 to this year's Juror Award Winner.
In her role as The Portland Art Museum's Arlene & Harold Schnitzer Curator of Northwest Art, Gately is responsible for the care, research, exhibition, and growth of the Arlene & Harold Schnitzer Center for Northwest Art collection and the development of special exhibitions of Northwest art. She works with art and artists of the Northwest region, comprising Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and Vancouver B.C., in the areas of acquisitions, exhibitions, publications, and donors. Gately coordinated the selection of the 2006 Oregon Biennial, which was on view July 29 through October 8, 2006 at The Portland Museum of Art.

Gately's recent exhibitions include: A Great Mania: The Influence of Delftware with Tony de los Reyes and Roger Anderson; Everyday Objects with John Bisbee, Lisa Hoke, Cindy Tower, Amanda Wojick, and Victoria Haven; and Confluence with Ghada Amer, Shirin Neshat, and Shahzia Sikander.

Brief History of CoCA Annual

CoCA has hosted the Annual since 1989. Each year CoCA allows its juror to define the ground rules and strategies for judging the work entered - for instance, this year's juror Jennifer Gately took a very active role in the jurying process, which included paying studio visits to all the selected artists residing in the Northwest. Differing jurying styles over the years has resulted in wildly varying shows, each reflecting the juror as much as the work entered. Past jurors have included Leon Golub & Nancy Spero, Paula Cooper, Kerry James Marshall, Alexander Melamid, Linda Farris and Ken Lum. In 2002, the CoCA Annual, which had been called the Northwest Annual, began accepting submissions from artists residing anywhere in the United States and Canada. Last year's juror was celebrated artist Ernesto Pujol, and the Juror's Award went to Seattle-based artist Tivon Rice.

Haiku D'ETAT @ ToST

Nov 21: Haiku D'ETAT and Michael Dylan Welch
Open Mic, Featured Poet Michael Dylan Welch and The HAIKU D'ETAT - a competitive poetry reading in haiku form! It's like the ORIGINAL MC battle (with a subtle change in the style) Open to all comers in which the winner will be decided by judges randomly picked from the audience - thus achieveing the "Democratization of Poetry". All poems in this slam must be in Haiku form. Poets will compete head-to-head, elimination style, until we have a winner. Email
slam@poetryfestival.org to reserve your spot in this competition.

Michael Dylan Welch was born in 1962 in Watford, England. He began enjoying haiku in high school, where an English teacher taught Welch about haiku. Welch graduated with a communications/media and English major. He received an M.A in English in 1989 where he focused on twentieth-century poetry and fiction. Since then Michael Dylan Welch has become one of contemporary haiku's greatest artists and contributors. Through his use of photography and language, Welch is able to illustrate perfectly clear images of solitude, revelation, revelry, spontaneity, and every possible human emotion often times through nature-based haiku. In addition, his work in the haiku community as a leader has helped advance the haiku art form in the United States to new levels.
