"Saddest Music in the World" @ Kozy Kino

Last Kozy Kino, although not as packed out as sometimes, was the most enjoyable
yet. I know the snack cakes were pretty tasty but it was something less tangible
that wonderful feeling of being comfy amongst a small group of folks, goofawing
incredulously at the hilariously disturbing spectre that is Brigid Berlin). If you ever
feel like you have some sticky psychological troubles, then you simply need to view
Pie in the Sky to achieve a nice fresh perspective. And if Seattle sometimes gets you
down for whatever reason (rain, lack of sunshine, rampant cynicism, foam novelty
baseball caps) then you should head over to the Kozy Kino this Friday to see
Guy Madden s Saddest Music in the World and then you ll appreciate true sorrow
on a level only attainable in Winnipeg and by a Canadian expatriate from Serbia.

Here s a brief synopsis, a rich amputee beer baroness Lady Port Huntley (Isabella Rosselini)
is poised to e! xpand her brewing operations into Depression era America which will soon repeal
Prohibition. As a publicity stunt to capitalize on Winnipeg s recent designation by the London
Times as the World Capital of Sorrow , Lady Port Huntley launches an international contest
for the title of Saddest Music in the World. Competitors flood in from all over the world to
vie for the honor and the 25,000 depression era dollar winner take s all purse. Melodramatic
hilarity ensues.

The film is shot through Vaseline covered lenses onto very distressed grainy stock, achieving
a magical aged effect, although the inconsistent use of color and B&W and camera techniques
can be a little jarring. But it s a very beautiful visual time and a perfect film for Kozy Kino and for a

Drink Special: you can be sure that plenty of beer will be on hand. As for Lady Liquor, well my
first drunk at the tender age of 13 was from a Dep! ression era libation called the Thunderbolt.
I highly discourage imbibing in one. But in that vain, I WILL be conjuring up something I call
the Infinite Sorrow. Be sure to buttress your liver up with plenty of vitamin B like my granddaddy
did before a whisky-soaked poker night.

For those not yet in the know .

The Kozy Kino is a new underground cinema that infuses diverse film programming
with thematic beverage service. Every second and fourth FRIDAY evening,
we throw down the homemade cushions, fire up the video beamer and
concoct delicious refreshments to wash down the freshly popped corn.
Each featured film is a forgotten wonder of cinema coupled with shorts
and inspirational drink specials. It s a cheap night of uninstitutionalized
quality entertainment and a fine example of underground economy.

The Kozy Kino is located at 1809 Minor Ave. (between Stewart and Howell) right
around the corner from the Rebar. It is also somebody s loft space but don t
let that put you off. Although it s an intimate experience (read: seating is
limited), it s the sort of thing that this town needs more of (e.g. the speakeasy,
the peoples kitchen, the Sunday sermon, the peoples' underground surgical theater, etc.).
Help breathe some life into this 'theme park of a city' now and start your own!

Friday March 25th, 9pm
1809 Minor Ave.
Entrance $1 - one U.S. dollar (Canadians welcome but not their money)

Terso @ CHAC

Terso

Originally from Chicago, Terso (aka Ephraim Alexander) moved to Seattle in 1998 and has held residencies locally for over 5 years. Currently signed to Thermal Recordings in Oakland, CA, Terso creates a wide variety of sonic funk. Whether it is drum ‘n’ bass, techno, or the abstract, Terso's music draws an emotive response with thick bass, sleek pads and rugged-off time beats. Expect 2005 to be a very productive year for Terso, who is currently working on a drum ‘n’ bass album for Thermal and various techno projects.
DJ Vital
Randy Engstrom, curator extraordinaire of Static Factory Media, will bring the noize. AND the toys.

Vital 5 opening: The Hideout.

I am really excited about Greg’s new project. The last rumor I heard was that he was busy launching his own business which involved selling classy gravestones made of glass. I was told that Greg was spending most of his time traveling around and attending funeral business conventions around the country. Then I ran into Greg and he was dropping some hints. "I have the keys", he said. But he would say more. At that time I was guessing into the wrong direction: "The keys to a funeral home in Lake City Way?". Rumors or not it didn’t prevent him from working on a new project that will be presented to the public this Saturday. For those of you that enjoyed the Vital 5 openings as much as I did there is no question about going or not going. You don’t want to miss this opening!

The Hideout

(NEW LOUNGE) Vital 5 Productions, the art-organization brainchild of Greg Lundgren, is entering a new chapter in its illustrious life by opening an elegant lounge, which will also serve as its headquarters. The Hideout has crystal chandeliers, dark mahogany wood, and velvet curtains--and it's on First Hill, just enough off the beaten path to live up to its cool clubhouse name. NATE LIPPENS

The Hideout, 1005 Boren Ave, 240-6365. Opening party 4 pm-2 am, free.

Bring Your Own Art (BYOA) Exhibition

On Saturday March 26, Seattle Outsider Artists Project (SOAP) is
hosting its first ever auto-curated exhibition. That's right, it
brings its own art (with a little help from you, of course). The
premise: for one night only, the public is welcome to hang, install,
perform, or otherwise display ANYTHING AT ALL. From art cars to indy
films to commix to tastelessly arranged Hummelware figurine
collections. We want it. And we won't say no*. We will not screen the
works (unless they're illegal or lethal) and we are actively
soliciting works that might not otherwise see the light of day. We
have 8000 square feet at in Building 30 at Magnuson Park to do
whatever we please with, and that's exactly what we're going to do.

For more info, please contact:

Love Life: Do you wanna dance? Part 2

In part 1 Wazhma promised free drinks if you introduced her to two of your friends that she didn’t know. Later I asked her how many drinks she was handing out and she said: none. This is a small town after all and everybody knows everybody. But maybe this time you’ll be able to bring people she doesn’t know. The last Love Life was a huge success and this one will be another good night. You will notice that the music that is being played will not follow any DJ logic – if there is any. Last time the evening started with music from Gotan Project ended with British punk rock and songs from Joan Jett. During the evening Wazhma was asking her friends: "What do you want to hear next?" and made sure that some of the songs were being played. Dj Anshul is probably known to many people from those Bollywood nights and he is very good at providing the music for those kinds of events. But I have heard that that’s not the only thing he’s good at. He can actually play other types of mu! sic – if somebody lets him.

So either you came to the last love life and danced your bootie off or you missed it and are wonderin' what you missed out on ... The Mirabeau room is giving me another chance to host a dance night Saturday March 26th. This is a night for all of you who are getting tired of the same old same old beats and all you want to do is boogie down rather than standing around as if it was a high school dance.

This time we are putting East vs. West with My good friends Dj Kippy (Platinum Records) and Dj Anshul spinning all the beats and grooves to make you shake it... shake it... shake it like a rock star... so come out and get your groove on cause its strictly about the music and having a good time.

For those of you who are unsure of your shaking abilities ... come out and just have some fun and we will help you find your groove.

And to make things a little more interesting.. if you bring two people I have not met before your first drink is on me!

P.S. If you came the last time and you did not hear your favorite song email me at wazhma@yahoo.com and I can see if I can get my boys to play it for you.

Mirabeau Room
529 Queen Anne AV N
Doors open 9pm ends when you just can't boogie no more ;)
$5 before 10pm and $7 after

Don Volcano’s Computer Corner

At first I thought this site is just strange. A guy dressed in a chicken costume (the Subservient Chicken) performs tricks on your command. The description is simple: "Get chicken just the way you like it. Type your commands here". I tried "laugh" and "cry" and it worked. Now I want to see the chicken do more tricks. I can see how you can get addicted to it:

Until next week,

Don Volcano.
