"Indicators" Opening @ BLVD Gallery

BLVD Gallery is proud to present "Indicators", a show of new works
by Todd St. John and Gary Benzel, the creators of the fabled independent
labels Green Lady and HunterGatherer. In 1994, while living in
California, St. John co-founded the independent label Green Lady with
Gary Benzel.

Green Lady began by making small runs of shirts and prints for friends,
then became a yearly series of designs selling to select stores primarily in the US and
Japan. Todd St. John later moved to New York and founded HunterGatherer
in 2000. HunterGatherer focuses on conceptual work across a wide range of
mediums, mainly design and video/film. Gary Benzel remained in California to
create internationally recognized Igloo store. Igloo store grew from
Benzels desire to create a an environment to sell Green Lady/HUGA
products to the end-user, and to feature other products and clothing
lines using a similar art-based approach to everyday items. Gary Benze
l continues to collaborate with St. John and the HunterGatherer studio on a
wide variety of projects including video/film, editorial, product, and
identity design.

In addition to the studio, Todd St. John has exhibited work internationally, he was
selected with Benzel for the 2003 Cooper-Hewitt National Design Triennial,
and is a visiting graduate critic gat the Yale School of Art.

Femke Hiemstra, Ronald Kurniawan, David Ho @ Roq La Rue Gallery

Roq La Rue Gallery
Presents
Femke Hiemstra
David Ho
Ronald Kurniawan

Opening Friday Feb 9th 6-9pm
Images below or online at http://www.roqlarue.com

We have a really great show for our first show of 2007! Roq la Rue is pleased to present a show by three artists who all work very differently yet share a commonality in their use of lively and fantastical subject matter. All artists explore the ideas of the enigmatic and the ways our minds try to map the unknowable, whether it be the question of life after death and the idea of redemption, the maps the human brain imposes on nature via language, or an untold story.

Ronald Kurniawan’s paintings are inspired by ideograms, syllables, letterforms, beasts and heroic landscapes. With a belief (or hope) that the sublime could co-exist with the mundane, he creates a visual language where wilderness and civilization merges happily together in a surrealistic, riotous jumble. He paints realistic natural environments and then breaks up the tranquil scenery with vibrant juxtaposed imagery taking the shape of icons, letterforms, and unusual wildlife...everything interacting on several planes, with the letter and structures sometimes substituting the wildlife itself. These works explore the notion of symbols and language as a grid we use to map the world around us.

Femke Hiemstra’s meticulously tight, jewel like mixed media paintings are homes to a dark fairytale land where inanimate objects come to life and frolic with animal neighbors. Lollipops become ship captains, Strawberries become giant wrestlers, and vegetables become Halloween gods with lantern eyes. Femke, like Ronald, also uses typography in her work, using words from various languages and letters in her paintings to further enhance the narrative while still retaining a playful sense of mystery, or as a visual device to frame in the scenery, as if you were looking at her world through a secret window. Drawing from a range of influences, from firework wrappers to Japanese woodblock prints, Femke’s use of both pop culture detritus and child-like fantasy create a vibrant playground for the imagination, with each piece looking like a cover for a fantastical adventure book, which is left up to the viewer to imagine the story inside.

David Ho’s work is created digitally, yet has the feel and look of aged watercolors. The series he is exhibiting,” Candice the Ghost” is a short departure from his more dark and sinister work. The series is devoted to a story about a little girl who dies and becomes a ghost. Her desire to become human forces her to look upon the human race with jealousy and rage - a kind of love/hate relationship. But with help from the gods, she ultimately learns to control her inner demons, attain inner peace and help mankind. This parable uses Eastern imagery and philosophy as it’s map, though the journey Candice must make will look familiar to anyone who has looked inward at the dark side within.

4th Annual "My Bloody Valentine is Shameless" @ Re-Bar

Celeste writes:

We're all really excited for our 4th 'Bloody Valentine is Shameless party.
It's become a bit of a tradition and almost like an anniversary for us. The
first one was at the Alibi Room, the second at the Rebar and last year at
the Eagle. This year we're back at the Re-bar and we'll have a free raffle
for prizes compliments of Babeland. We'll also raffle off at chance to take
the first swing at a heart shaped pinata that will be lowered from the
ceiling at 12:00pm. I cannot comment in advance about what's inside of the
pinata, but let's just say it may lead to a spectacle. Space Virgins will be
holding down the Gorification/Beautification Station and Kissing Booth.
Dress to express! (meaning, let's get dressed up as we see fit in order to
have fun and make fun of the Hallmark holiday). Also, we're planning on
beefing up the sound with the Shameless Active Mackie speakers.

Here is are more details:

So after the last 4 years of Shameless and crew gallivanting around town,
I'm sure you all think you know what our parties are all about. Well, this
Friday's (2/9 @ The Re-Bar) 4th Annual "My Bloody Valentine is Shameless"
will bring the Big Bass King himself, NYC Heavy Bass Champion DROP THE LIME
who will certainly huff and puff, and blow your pre-conceived expectations
down! That's right - with this cast of characters and over-the-top
spectacles, SHAMELESS WILL BASS YOU!

So, you ask, just what will be going on? What are we boastin' about?

#1 - The performers kick ass! National and local talents - DROP THE LIME
live! (Tigerbeat6, Trouble and Bass, NYC), the one and only NAHA (DJ Set),
Squid Leader & Axcys (DJ Set), Justin Byrnes (Live PA), MC Anton Bomb, &
Live Visuals by VJ Champ Killing Frenzy.

#2 - Be prepared for a larger and fuller sound than you've ever heard at
Re-Bar. No worries, you'll be surrounded by sound but still able to chat
with your neighbor.
Shameless & LuvShack will be stylin' out the Re-Bar properly with speakers
galore.
All the better to BASS YOU with.

#3 - To help you get into that festive mood, we'll have a
Gorification/Beautification Station staffed with friends & Space Virgins -
just in case you forgot we're encouraging you to DRESS TO EXPRESS and the
bar will be serving JELL-O SHOTS!!! Still not silly enough for ya?

#4 - We've got loot to raffle off from Babeland, Shameless, Planned
Parenthood & friends. These folks also helped us prepare a naughty pinata
filled to the gills with all kinds of booty to smash at midnight!!!

#5 - Not only is this event at our beloved Re-Bar, but we'll have costumed
dancers gettin' down on the floor, fantastic photography, and best of all,
YOU!!!.

“25 YEARS OF LOVE & ROCKETS” @ Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery

CELEBRATE VALENTINE’S DAY WITH “25 YEARS OF LOVE & ROCKETS” by Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez

Gala Reception Saturday, February 10, 2007 5:00 – 8:00 PM

As the romantic Valentine’s Day approaches, Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is pleased to present “25 Years of Love & Rockets.” This multicultural comic book epic by Los Angeles brothers Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez single handedly launched the alternative comics genre, and remains as fresh and relevant today as when it was introduced in 1982. A riveting combination of punk, futurism, Latino and North American pop culture, “Love & Rockets” inspired a generation of narrative artists. The publication of this title cemented the position of Seattle-based Fantagraphics Books as the leading publisher of challenging comics and graphic novels. This exhibition of original artwork opens with a gala reception for Los Bros Hernandez on Saturday, February 10, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery, located at 1201 S. Vale St., in the heart of Seattle’s lively Georgetown district.

In countless ways, the penetrating and poignant stories in “Love & Rockets” foreshadowed our nation’s rapidly changing cultural landscape. The Hernandez brothers’ literary style has been compared to the Magic Realism of Nobel laureate Gabriel García Márquez, but their distinctive artwork is incomparable. Their work has been enormously influential on popular culture in America and abroad. The celebrated British rock band Love & Rockets took their name from the comic, and the work of Los Bros Hernandez continues to have significant impact on contemporary artists in all disciplines.

The second volume in the “Love & Rockets” series is currently up to 18 issues. Stories from the first volume are collected in many handsome editions, including Gilbert’s “Palomar: The Heartbreak Soup Stories,” and Jaime’s “Locas: The Maggie & Hopey Stories.” In addition to “Love & Rockets,” the artists have created several solo series including Jaime’s award-winning “Penny Century,” and “Luba’s Comics & Stories” by Gilbert.

All events free to the public of all ages
Hope to see you there! Cissy

8th Northwest Biennial at Tacoma Art Museum.

Steve Miller writes:

hey folks,

I’m busy working on new pieces for my solo show at Davidson Contemporary in September 2007 and can’t wait to show the world my strange visions! Until then, I’m writing to let you know I have art in two exciting exhibitions and am participating in two great auctions in the next few weeks.

Next up is the 8th Northwest Biennial at Tacoma Art Museum. Juried by TAM’s Rock Hushka and David Kiehl, print curator from the Whitney, the exhibition “takes a critical look at the region’s artistic strengths, trends, and developments since the 7th Northwest Biennial in 2004 and highlights the creativity of Northwest artists.”

I’ll have a grid of nine images from the Milky series, including Bryan (shown here), which has never exhibited before.

The show opens Saturday,February 10, from 6-9pm, and will be up through May 6th. I’ll be there for the opening and would love to see you there!

Hours and directions to the museum can be found here:
http://www.tacomaartmuseum.org/page.asp?view=177

Currently at The Gallery at Tacoma Community College is Baroque Revival, on view through March 16. I have Wild Boys I on display, a 36”x48” photograph in the chiaroscuro style of Caravaggio, with elements of William S. Burroughs thrown in for good measure. If you happen to be in Tacoma to see the biennial after opening day, you can always drop on by TCC’s gallery Monday through Friday 10-5pm.

Finally, there’s the 6th Annual PONCHO Invitational Fine Art Auction on Saturday, March 3. Saxon, from the Milky series, will be on offer in the live auction. This event has seats available and you can find out more information here.

This is an opportunity to shop for a gift, socialize, and/or make a valentine just in time for Valentine's Day.

This will be the third annual Valentine Making Party, but the first to showcase local jewelry and crafts. These parties have been very inspiring and ended in Valentine's with feathered wings, sculpture valentines, and cards with pencil eraser nipples and real garters sewn on! Don't worry if crafting is alien to you... Just hang out and remember what making art was about in grade school when it was making macaroni necklaces for Mom and thingamobobs for Dad. It really IS the thought that counts....and we'll help you NOT make a lame ass card!

We will supply you with pink/red craft paper, felt, doillies, erotic illustrations, collage materials, pipe cleaners, glitter, glue, envelopes, and whatever other frou frou stuff we can find. This event will be the most creative if people come prepared with pictures and scraps to share with others. The whole idea is to make something heart felt and personal, not manufactured by Hallmark.

While your crafty hands are at work, and as you browse the jewelry tables there will be trays of hors d'oeuvres for your satisfaction and a cash bar. Please bring cash and a checkbook if you're looking to buy gifts because not all of the artists present will be able to take credit cards.

Thanks!

The Asian Feminine @ Retail Therapy

February 12th : The Asian Feminine
On February 12th we continue with the Capitol Hill art Walk. I am of course super excited because we have a whole new Series of work by Gazelle Samizay ( a.k.a my sister :)) She will be here from Arizona specifically for the show:

"WHITE MALE SEEKING SEXY, SUBMISSIVE, ASIAN FEMALE." Exotic Asian women abound in Gazelle Samizay's new photography show exploring the production of Asian stereotypes through the repetition of images. Using 20th century films as source material, the resulting photographs are an intricate collage of sex, love and politics. Entitled "Stereotyping the Asian Feminine," the exhibition opens from 6-9 pm on February 13, 2006 and will run through the month of March at Retail Therapy 905 E Pike ST.

RED WINE & CHOCOLATE @ Red Sky Winery

Red Sky Winery Presents.
RED WINE & CHOCOLATE
Monday, February 12, 2007
7:00 pm to 9:00 pm

Join us for a dessert reception at Red Sky Winery in Woodinville as we taste their new releases, including a vertical tasting! We will taste their 2003 and 2002 Bordeaux Blends, and 2003 and 2004 Syrah's.

Winemaker Carol and Jim Parsons began their passion for wine in 1982, when they opened a retail wine and cheese store in Seattle . They have toured wine regions of the world, tasting, learning and increasing their appreciation for the complexities and nuances that combine to create great wine. With a group of seven friends, they made their first 50 cases of Red Sky Wine in their Bellevue home in 1999. The winery has grown slowly to a current production of 1000 cases producing wines from some of Washington 's finest vineyards in an effort to produce rich, elegant and complex wines that compliment foods.

Artist Gretchen Michaels' work will be on display that evening. Wine available for purchase on site. Parking available on-site.

BYOP Film Night returns to Alibi Room

Let's get freaky this Monday! I'm going to kick things off by spinning a bunch of old physical education records on a couple of old school (literally) phonographs and playing some truly hideous workout videos from the 1980s. RSVP if you plan on attending--especially let me know if you're going to bring tapes, DVD, reels, whatever....

Also, if you're a spacehead, visit http://www.myspace.com/alibiroomseattle and let's be friends. The downstairs is available for private parties, multimedia events, and general carousing.

Monday 411

Alibi Room hosts its monthly film night this coming MONDAY FEBRUARY 12 from 8 pm - 2 am.

Featured artist this month is Erin Hilleary, who invites you to bring homemade and/or commercial fitness videos and encourages you to come dressed for a workout.

What it is...

B R I N G Y O U R O W N P R O J E C T O R

BYOP happens about once a month downstairs at the Alibi Room.
It is a meeting place and incubator for the Seattle arts community.

February's theme is homemade fitness videos, but work in other veins is also welcome and encouraged.

While there's an emphasis on sharing 8&16 mm films on old projectors, anyone can come down to watch or share art in other media. VHS tapes, DVDs, and photo CDs of original work can be shown on our in-house digital projector. Limit is 10 minutes or less. (Of course, if there's no one waiting, longer works are acceptable.)

DJs can bring laptops or vinyl to spin on our house gear.
Musicians can plug into our live board and jam to the visuals.

The evening is unstructured--no stage, no spotlight, no lineup.
We only ask that everyone shows respect and shares the space.

Love's For Sale @ Ouch My Eye

Wednesday February 14th
Ouch My Eye presents

Love's For Sale

This show is about love. The lack there of. The idea that it exists. The pain that it causes and the amazing art it can create. This show will also address the Hallmarkation of this Holiday.

Featuring:

AMY REINECKE, JOE VOLLAN, ANNE MICHAUX, WYATT LANDIS,
AVERY BLOOM, LAWRENCE RUELOS, CHRISTOPHER NELSON , TAMARA CODOR,
JACKIE KINGSBURY, TERRENCE SANDERS, LACEY HASLAM, ZEPHYR WAZALLANN,
BETH PARKER, STEPHANIE HATCHER

We have some amazing art, from some amazing people: Photography, sculpture, Pen and ink, little cute take away buttons, and cards. Some craziness from the kids here at OME who may be the most anti-valentines jokers in town. There will be installation art, and more booze then you can shake a bow wielding, winged Cherub at.

Not to mention musical stylings of friend, and musical genius Gabe Mintz. The boy can raise the hair on our backs, and there is a lot of it back there so it’s impressive.

Backing him up will be Amass, A local rock band with love in their hearts.

The Architect will be on the 1's and 2's, If he can't get you making out with someone, well then let me know cause he comes fully equipped with a shot-ski.

Valentine’s Day Quiz – “On Valentines Day I will” (Circle One):

A- Cry yourself to sleep with a body sized pillow, while whispering the name of your favorite non-existent crush into the pillows non-existent ear.

B- Go see some stupid movie with some non-significant ending that you could see any other day of the year.

C- Have a romantic $150.00 dinner with your significant other to show that you care for each other, and realize you could have done the same thing on any other night, with any meal; at home. Love isn’t day specific.

D- Come to Ouchmyeye Studios, support art and emerging artists in Visual and Audio Medias. Make your love actually count for something more than yourself or your immediate friends.

Guerrilla Masquerade Party #28 - ANIMAL FARM! Photos!

Hey Guerrillas!

Thank you one and all for filling the Zoo with animals (and farmers)
last night! What a great turnout!

Folks came up from GMP Portland, we had a lot of new faces, and
EVERYONE was decked out in amazing costumes.

In fact, there were so many animals out & about, we failed to get
pictures of WAY too many of you.

The photos we were able to capture can be viewed on the GMP site at
http://www.gmpseatt le.com/gallery/

But we would LOVE to add some of your pictures to help flesh out the
gallery and show off all the great animal costumes. Send links to
your photos to gmpseattle@earthlin k.net and we'll try to get some
added soon.

Until next time!
