Events for 4/8 to 4/14/2005

We are experiencing unusual high seismic party activity on Friday. I think Cheb I Sabbah for ten bucks is a good deal. Then there is the Shadow Ball and an Roq La Rue opening. This is looking good!

This week PV reporter Hastro Gould has added helpful information and comments about Ian Spring party, Felix Da Housecat, Raghu Rai, Building North Pacific America. Thanks!

Also I’ve got a lot of responses to my Fake or Not contest. The Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches were real and everybody got it right. I am sharing one letter from Cody with you who actually met them in Madagascar.

Pooch & Joe Chiodo @Roq La Rue

David writes:

Hey, uh, Don,

Here's the info on the upcoming Roq La Rue show. This
will be a very cool show. Both artists are amazing.
This may be the last chance to see this much work by
these 2 guys because they are really making huge noise
on the national art scene. Soon they'll be on that
level where Seattle isn't big enough for them to waste
their time on, like Mark Ryden, Robert Williams & Glen
Barr, etc. I've been by the gallery already & saw
everything as it was going up on the walls. 1/2 of
Pooch's piece's are already sold & the show hasn't
started yet. Come by & guess which piece I bought.

See you there!
David K

More details:

Pooch

Lowbrow's newest art star exhibits his new "carnival ride" series, a journey through a world of devils, tikis, day of the dead skeletons, H.P. Lovecraft, and Jules Verne among other exotica!
And
Joe Chiodo
Legendary cartoonist and pin up illustrator (Marvel, Verotix) in his first gallery show!

OPENS THIS FRIDAY, April 8th 6-10pm
Contact us if you want to be on the preview list!

Roq la Rue is pleased to present two exceptional talents to the Pop Surrealism/Lowbrow art world, one an emerging artist rapidly making a name for himself, and the other a long respected talent in the comic book industry who has turned his hand to painting his own visions.

As a child and teenager, Florida painter Michael “Pooch” Pucciarelli was raised on a diet of Walt Disney World, Ray Harryhausen films, H. P. Lovecraft novels, Comics, and Florida tourist traps. Later on Pooch (as he goes by) was exposed to artists and illustrators such as Frank Frazetta, MC Escher, Dali and Bosch, complimenting his appreciation of suburban weirdness with artists who mined fantastic subject matter with equal parts technical skill and reckless abandonment to the imagination. Frequent trips to Walt Disney World with his family opened Pooch's mind to he world of imagination made tangible, which would manifest themselves later in his "rides" series. Images of the fantastic and surreal were forever ingrained upon Pooch's mind, and he spent countless inspired hours learning to draw. This interest in the unusual and his love of creating art led him to a successful career as a tattoo artist, which in turned honed the technique and discipline needed f! or his paintings…rendering each painting fully in pencil before picking up a paintbrush.

Pooch’s paintings are intended to hold the viewer’s attention, which is quite a challenge in today’s TV, film and computer age. His art is a visual cocktail mix of Mexico's Dia De los Muertos imagery, a bit of Bosch and Brueghul and MC Escher's' architectural elements with a shot of tattoo culture, shaken and stirred, and served up in a souvenir tiki skull.

Holding the old masters in high regard, Pooch has a strong respect for painters of the Flemish age such as Bosch and Van Eyk, and modern artists such as Todd Schorr, Joe Coleman, Mark Ryden and Robert Williams, whom all seem to be keeping in the tradition of highly detailed symbolic works.

Roq la Rue is pleased to be one of the first galleries to showcase this extraordinary up and comer in the Pop Surrealism/Lowbrow scene.

Like Pooch, Joe Chiodo grew up obsessively watching horror movies and reading comic books, which would influence the path he would take as a young artist. Joe has since made a name for himself over the past 25 years as a first rate illustrator and colorist, having worked painting cover art for numerous paperback books to years later becoming a prolific and well respected colorist and storyteller for comic books, from Marvel to Glenn Danzig’s “Verotik” comic publishing company (including painting some of the most luscious Vampirellas ever committed to paper.)

One of Joe’s trademarks is his particular brand of “Pin Up” girl. Painted in soft creamy tones with an almost cinematic flair for lighting, Joe’s paintings evoke the work of classic pin up artists George Petty and Vargas, with occasional nods to the elongated, big eyed influence of 60’s kitsch icon Margaret Keane and the hallucinogenic color palette and nubile “good girl” tone of 60’s men’s magazines. His technical craftsmanship is complimented by his expressive brush stokes and sophisticated palette. His characters always retain a whimsical charm no matter how dark they may be or what kind of novel or bizarre troubles they may find themselves in.

Even Dwarves Started Small @ das Kozy Kino

Kino comrades, I have been waiting for this moment since this uncertain venture

began -- letting the audience grow and become ever more enthusiastic until the day

would come along when I could spring upon your unsuspecting innocent eyes, this

one strange film that is ever so precious to me.

Werner Herzog’s Even Dwarves Started Small is a film about a colony of little people

who live in a villa situated amidst a barren volcanic landscape, essentially cut off from the

outside world. However, in this isolation, there remains the same forces of tyranny and of

a physical world oppressive to them. This ‘story’ (or unraveling sequence of incredible scenes)

is about people recklessly lashing out at these forces. The wholly inadequate imagery of James

Dean and all that melodramatic Hollywood bullshit is formulated drivel compared to this.

This is a film about rebellion, pure and simple.

It was unofficially banned in West Germany upon its release, was derailed by the Left for being

counter-revolutionary, and probably shocked a lot of people with its disturbing visual onslaught.

If this film was made with ordinary actors and actresses, it would not be as effective or endearing.

Yes, the squeaky-voices can immediately cause one discomfort, and yes, the characters’ behavior

is deeply troubling, especially when they unleash their wrath on the only others more powerless than

them. But, somewhere in the middle of the film, one can completely disregard that they are midgets

at all and that their misguided struggle is quickly spiraling downwards into utter and total chaos.

You are haunted by the twisted allegorical sincerity of the specter of a defecating camel and the

littlest of the little men, doubled over and outright laughing himself to death.

Drink Special: due to the outright strangeness of the film, I am having trouble with the drink creation.

Here’s the flier I made from when I showed this film last year in Berlin at the coldest, dirtiest, most

Ill-attended Kino on the planet… www.infernalnoise.org/kozykino/dwarves.jpg

For those not yet in the know….

The Kozy Kino is a new underground cinema that infuses diverse film programming

with thematic beverage service. Every second and fourth FRIDAY evening,

we throw down the homemade cushions, fire up the video beamer and

concoct delicious refreshments to wash down the freshly popped corn.

Each featured film is a forgotten wonder of cinema… coupled with shorts

and inspirational drink specials. It’s a cheap night of uninstitutionalized

quality entertainment and a fine example of underground economy.

The Shadow Ball

Could you include the following announcement in this weeks party volcano?

I've been in this particular mansion, and it is just that. The recent
remodel to the property cost over a million. It's going to be an amazing
space for a large format party...

And, by the way, the computer stuff that you toss into the announcements,
it's pretty funny.

Take care,

Cheb I Sabbah @ Chop Suey

Greetings.

World-renowned DJ Cheb i Sabbah brings his transcendent turntable skills to Seattle’s Chop Suey, Friday April 8, then heads north for another spirit-moving set at Bellingham’s Nightlight Lounge on Saturday, April 9. Darek Mazzone opens both shows
This will be the Northwest’s only opportunity to dance-in-advance to the hottest tracks from Sabbah’s upcoming album, due May 10.

On his new album, La Kahena, Algerian-born Cheb i Sabbah returns to his North African roots, collaborating with some of the most distinctive female singers from the Maghreb. Recording in studios in Marrakesh, San Francisco, New York and New Delhi, Sabbah has added his own “dj Science” or modern aural magic to these performances, making La Kahena a truly original and groundbreaking project.

Here’s what the press has to say about Cheb i Sabbah:

“…Cheb i Sabbah creates one of the most piquant blends of ancient and modern yet attempted in the DJ/mixologist realm…” – LA Weekly

“Samples be damned! This is the real thing. The result? A seamless melding of cultures. A…meditation on the power of music that gives new meaning to ‘trance’” – Mixer

“With a creative dynamic similar to Radiohead’s on Kid A Cheb i Sabbah has made his studio the lead instrument, as he brings a dance floor beat/DJ sensibility to cerebral zones and melodic forms traditionally unrefreshed by dance music.” – Max Reinhardt, World Entertainment Network

Tickets: $10 in advance at www.ticketswest.com or Sonic Boom Records

**I have 2 pairs of tickets for anyone who will hand out flyers at the end of the night this Friday at the Mirabeau Room or Monday night at I heart Shiva/Baltic Room. Ping me back at darek@planetbeat.net if interested.

Hakea @ CHAC Lower Level

Hakea
Hakea is a laptop live PA duo based in the thriving Seattle electronic
music community. Both hail from South King County where Matt Carthum
(Matt One) experimented with tapes, records, and effects while Matt
Turpin (Matt Zero) explored FM synthesis. A dozen years later the two
would meet, discover common interests, and share a basement studio in
Seattle. Their music is an ambient and beat driven electronic mark
thickly layered with the sounds of analog and digital synthesis, drum
programming, and treated vocals. Drawing from such influences as
Dykehouse, Steve Reich, Aeroc, and Matmos Matt One and Matt Zero create
ambient, improvisational dreamscapes incorporating synthesisers,
sequencers, and anything they can get their hands on. Their ability to
fuse melodic reverence, with sharp dissonance thrusts the mind, ear, and
body into collective focus.

Hakea has spent the last year developing an impressive live presence. By
incorporating a dedicated video artist, they create a moving visual and
musical performance, drawing the audience into an open articulated
message. In 2004, Hakea performed at the inaugural Decibel Festival In
Seattle, the Bellingham Electronic Arts Festival, various clubs, art
venues and a three-mile long abandoned train tunnel.

They have recorded a 4 track EP and are currently working with local
label Click Pop Records on future CD and DVD releases.
"Hakea's melodies and rhythms are uniformly smart, interesting, and
imbued with unsappy emotion. At times, Hakea even recall the spacey
abstractions and exploratory analog tonalities of German electronic
pioneers like Tangerine Dream, Conrad Schnitzler, and Klaus Schulze.
This active duo is further proof that Seattle's becoming an
electronic-music hotbed." - Dave Segal, The Stranger

Raghu Rai photo opening party @ ART/Not Terminal gallery

Hastro Gould writes:

We are not Flowers, we are Flames!

More details:

A Photo exhibition of the Bhopal Chemical Disaster

Raghu Rai is internationally recognized as India's most distinguished photographer. His photographs have appeared in such publications as India Today, Time, The New York Times, Paris Match, and National Geographic, and he has won Nikon Photo Awards numerous times. The images that he took in Bhopal on December 3, 1984 the morning after the devastating chemical leak documented the horror and captured a community in trauma.

In 2002, Greenpeace commissioned him to record the continuing tragedy and mounted an exhibit of his photographs which traveled extensively in Europe and South America. In conjunction with the exhibit Greenpeace also published a book of the collection entitled Exposure: Portrait of a Corporate Crime. A selection of these photographs has been generously donated by Greenpeace for this exhibit.
Special events are throughout the exhibit including Opening Reception on April 9th and film screenings. Complete information at www.tasveer.org/bhopalexhibit.html.

Randy Wood’s opening @ SOIL

New artwork by Randy Wood:
They Will Be The Judge Of That
and Ghost Rocks

and in SOIL’s new backspace gallery:
Remote Control
a group of recent small works by Jana Brevick.

Randy Wood’s performance piece, They Will Be The Judge Of That, pairs a brush and ink drawing against two gerbils housed in a display case. Over the course of one month, these animals are at liberty to chew and shred their way through the artwork. The performance takes a humorous look at an artwork’s journey through creation, interpretation, reaction, and how its conveyed meaning changes over time as our perception of the artwork changes.

No one, including Mr. Wood, can predict the outcome of They Will Be The Judge Of That, as it’s impossible to say how these busy little creatures will respond to the artwork. Will they shred the entire object? Will they ignore it? Will they attempt escape? Ult! imately, the drawing’s fate rests upon their judgment.

Accompanying this performance is a recent series of brush and ink drawings, titled Ghost Rocks, also by Randy Wood. Carefully detailed, these drawings of weathered boulders have a soft, otherworldly appearance.

We perceive rocks as solidly inert, yet through erosion and other factors they are constantly, imperceptibly in a state of change. The drawings of Ghost Rocks—long rows of small, staggered, illustration board panels—imply a narrative. Similar to watching a long, still scene in a film, the viewer is aware that the moments preceding and following that episode are defined by motion.

Letters to the Editor.

Thanks for participating in my little Fake or Not contest. The Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches were real and everybody got it right. And the winner is … Cody!

The other email is about the airplane homes fake. Or was it a real thing? I thought the airplanes were an easy fake. But now I am not that sure anymore as I am puzzled by David’s email.

RE: Fake or not (Don Volcano’s Computer Corner)

Don,

i've been to madagascar and the hissers are real, VERY real. imagine quietly
slipping out of your cot in the middle of the night when the plateful of
curried rice with parasite sauce you had for dinner has disagreed with you
yet again (you'd think you'd get used to it after a while!). You tiptoe
through the dark to the outhouse, suck in your breath, open the door and
plop your rumbling volcano down (it's quite a party in there). You switch on
your flashlight and the walls of your box come to life, writhing and hissing
at you in a cacophony that Wes Craven would give a testicle for... funny how
the men make the same sound when they're trying to pick you up on the street
the next day... Anyway, i check the box marked 'TRUE'. My birthday's january
18, now you know what to get me.

All the best,
cody

RE: Fake or not (Don Volcano’s Computer Corner)

I'm not sure about the 2nd one, but I'm pretty sure
the 1st airplane site is for real. All of the Oregon
stuff checks out & I have checked the actual Portland
TV news site to cross reference his story. Also, I
have an article or 2 from architecture magazines
showing houses like this. They cost about $8000 to
$10000 to buy a decomisioned fuselauge with no wings.
The one I remember best turned out really cool.

Check that guys site. There is a small airport right
by where the plane is said to be & if you follow some
of his links, you get to the KATU news website, which
is a Portland TV station with a story about Mr
Campbell. I have considered this plane into house
option myself. You can buy old fuselauges in a few
places in the country. This site seems real. The other
one is hard to tell. The idea is real & i know it's
been done.

By the way, thanks so much for Gizoogle. I use it all
the time now. It's my fave.
Cheers,
DK

Don Volcano’s Computer Corner

This is a pretty famous one. But maybe you haven’t heard of it:

10 worst album covers of all time.
http://porktornado.diaryland.com/albumcover.html

I was hoping that there was a complete site that would be dedicated to this important topic. Unfortunately I couldn't find one. Let me know if you find a site that is specialized in bad covers, or if you start one. In return I will tell you about a site that is specialized in Hell's gates - next week.

Cheers,
Don Volcano.
