CORNISH DANCE THEATER SPRING 2005 CONCERT

Hi Don,

Interested in provocative dance?

Noted choreographer Wade Madsen’s sensual ensemble piece explores the joy, pain and power that accompanies infatuation; e.e. cummings’ poem, “I like my body when it is with your body” inspires a work by Peter Kyle.

With themes as intriguing as these, the upcoming April performances by the Cornish Dance Theater promise to be especially compelling.

Thanks,

Adriana

CORNISH DANCE THEATER SPRING 2005 CONCERT

Friday, April 15 at 8 pm; Saturday, April 16 at 2 pm & 8 pm
Choreography by José Limón, Peter Kyle, Wade Madsen and Gerard Théorêt

A program highlight will be José Limón’s “Suite from A Choreographic Offering”, restaged by Limón authority Gary Masters. Originally premiered in 1964 at the American Dance Festival, “A Choreographic Offering” was created as a tribute to Limón’s mentor Doris Humphrey. It contains variations, paraphrases and motifs from fourteen Humphrey works and is set to “Musical Offering” by Johann Sebastian Bach. The Cornish Dance Theater production of “Suite from A Choreographic Offering” will present excerpts from the hour-long work. Reconstructor Gary Masters joined the Limón Dance Company as a dancer in 1969. The originator of many roles in the Limón repertory, he later served as associate artistic director of the company. In 1994, he created Limón West Dance Project, the company’s West Coast training center and ensemble. Masters is a key reconstructor for the Limón Institute, and has staged Limón’s choreography around the globe. A renowned choreographer himself, Masters has recei! ved choreographic fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Arts Council Silicon Valley. His choreography has been commissioned by the Limón Dance Company, Diablo Ballet, Nashville Ballet and Dance Kaleidoscope, among others; Masters also created dances for the Mathews Masters Dance Company in New York. He is currently a member of the Dance faculty at San José State University and Co-Artistic Director of sjDANCEco.

Seattle Erotic Art Festival 2005 Opening Gala @ ConWorks.

Toi writes:

Hello!

I’d like to invite you to come visit my interactive installation

at the ANNUAL SEATTLE EROTIC ARTS FESTIVAL
this coming weekend at Cosolidated Works

As part of the festivities I have set up a breakfast table, that offers
homemade bread, whose yeast starter includes my own vaginal yeast. Served
with butter and honey, it addresses the human connection to itself and it’s
surrounding world. The bread’s vital force is replaced with the power of
femininity. Women and bread are one: life-giving, nourishing, and
universal.
It’s an old metaphor, but one that’s rarely been used in such a
physical way.

Due to recent conversations with Seattle public health department officers
this interactive installation cannot exist as envisioned. The public is not
allowed to make up their own minds about whether or not they want to literally
digest this idea, because my bread got censored. In conversations with
various public health officers I received quotes such as,” You (Toi
Sennhauser) are not FDA approved.”, “We do not eat human beings.” To compare a
trace amount of my very healthy vaginal environment (complete STD check),
baked at 400 degrees Fahrenheit, to cannibalism is one thing; to actively,as
a governmental branch, disconnect the human mind from it’s human body opens
up a whole new can of worms. The public is generally encouraged to legally
ingest a great array of chemical substances, yet when it comes to the human
body in a thoughtful, artistic context, the public is forbidden to think for
themselves.

I would like to invite you to come visit the Seattle Erotica Arts Festival and be a little rebellious by eating bread.
Please keep in mind that I am not trying to get SEAF in trouble, so
please eat this bread while I look the other way.

See you there,

Toi

Everybody knows what the driving force behind PV upgrades and downgrades is: Snacks. We are the biggest snack whores in town. Your art can be shitty but if you put out some shrimps or tuna sushi we'll let you get away with it. Well, we wouldn't lie. But we would spend our precious time rather with raving about snacks instead of writing hurtful things about questionable art.

Let's get to the point: Toi makes amazing snacks. Toi is half Thai, half Austrian and probably still works for that Circus dinner place on 5th. Her snacks saved Soil a bunch of times where we would have mercilessly downgraded some shows otherwise (in our opinion Soil doesn't seem to be able to penetrate the barrier of the "Art Summer Class" craft league).
So the snacks will be great at SEAF, and what do we think about the art?
Well, let's just leave it at "Toi makes amazing snacks"!

Fundraiser for THE MACHINE

Matt writes:

Hey there Party Volcano, I hope it's not too late! Could you add this to your listings?

Nope, it's not too late. But isn’t it a little bit too late for Pyrosutra? Remember "fire performances"? One time you couldn't go to any event or party without seeing some clown waving a candle if you wanted or not. But then over time it got boring and fire performances disappeared like pointy shoes that went out of fashion (or are they 'in' again?). Other fashions took over: Bollywood, belly-dancing, Middle Eastern theme parties, naked sushi (I think I might have helped stopping that nonsense with a brutal downgrade in 2003), Tsunami Benefits, and more recently: Burlesque entertainment.

Dave Martinez (BuMP) obviously likes it:

I highly recommend this event. The $15 cover is open bar, and there is a
$2 discount for bunnies. The entertainment, as always, is top notch.
I'll see you there!

Mystery Film night @ Kozy Kino

Sorry to throw you all for a loop with this… I would put it together for this Friday night but there is a conflict with a drunken salon at my place involving brass music and foot scrubs (hopefully).

Kozy Kino is a temporary thing. It can only last so long my friends. As long as I live here in this weird place that I live. And so I am trying to pack in as much Kino and ‘living’ as is possible before it is time that I depart (quite soon). So, I kick things into a more regular screening. But now we reach a more unpredictable, yet more democratic programming. For example…

Do you like exquisitely lit shots of cool people smoking in slow motion?

Are you a sucker for high necked, sleeveless patterned dresses that accentuate the female neck? Or for romantic, unrequited love affairs that lead to unequivocal sorrow and tragedy? Style over substance? Well, then it seems you share a lot in common with Mr. Wong Kar Wai.

And it is with some fortune (and generous grace of Mr. Steve Miller) that I have come into a copy of the new Wong Kar Wai film, 2046. Slipping in and out of futuristic sci-fi novel and tumultuous 1960’s Hong Kong romantic kitsch, this yet to be released sequel to the gorgeous In the Mood for Love will live up to your expectations of high stylization with a capital H. But where In the Mood for Love delivers a sad and simple love story told with beautiful economy, 2046 meanders all over Hell’s Half Acre in its attempts to tramp out any notion that love is a pure and wonderful thing.

As you can see, I am not sold on *2046. And neither should you be... at least not solely on the merits of the director and any previous efforts (you never should be). Yes, it looks stunning and your jaw will drop at some of the costume design and lighting, but so what!?

And so I want to present the Kozy Kino go-ers with a choice… Wong Kar Wai’s 2046 or the mystery film for the evening. It will be a spontaneous exercise in direct democracy.

Won’t you please join us in this fun experiment fraught with contention and possible disorderliness?

I will improvise a drink special on the spot for this one, folks! No spiked chocolate sodas.

No bizarre anisette concoctions. This one will go down smooth. That much I can promise.

(*note: perhaps, I find personal fault with 2046 because it is the kind of film that is so stylized that it would cause me to ride my bike up a hill at 1:45am to find a pack of cigarettes when I’m earnestly trying to quit smoking… it’s just that cool! German New Wave could never make me do that).

Mustache Party 2005

I am not 100% sure whether this is a public party. But hey, I found it on the Internet! Be warned: commercial private parties may suck as much as public events. Although I think this one will be a good one.

The Nerdhaus is proud to announce the third and final Mustache Pageant and associated party. This is it! The one not to miss! What will your friends think of you when you admit to them that you missed this party? They'll hate you. Hate and pity you. Mark your calendars now, and start planning that mustache early. If you still need convincing, check out pictures from Mustache Party 2003.

The competition takes place on Saturday, April 16th, at the illustrious Nerdhaus. The party starts at party time, the judging and awards ceremony will begin at 11pm. All mustache lovers and mustache haters are encouraged to come, whether you're sporting one or not. Non-mustache wearing guests are encouraged to draw one on or buy/make fake ones. Liquor will be supplied (drink tickets can be purchased for $1 each, and tips are encouraged!), but please feel free to BYOB to keep it flowing all night. Those who enter the mustache competition drink for free all night!

We encourage you to bring your friends, but please don't invite anyone who is indifferent about mustaches or crazy nutso wacky.

This is Burlesque #5 @ The Catwalk

This is one of those Burlesque events I would actually go to.

The Shadow Ball (4/8/2005)

So I've heard The Shadow Ball last Friday was a big stinker. At 1 AM I got a life report from a restless party scout while I was waiting at a hospital - a friend of mine went into labor that night and we thought it would be a nice gesture to cheer her up before they cut her open like a fish.

Back to the party report: my friends didn't even get into the party. The line was getting longer by the minute but they wouldn't let anybody in because the house was already full.

"But why would anybody want to pay in order to get in?" asked the angry voice on the other end of the line. Cover charge plus cash bar is usually the signature of Burning Man fundraisers. But according to my sources the crowed was just a bunch of boring yuppies. Not that you wouldn't be able to find any boring yuppies amongst Burners, though (ha, ha, ha!).

What can we learn from The Shadow Ball incident? Diversify! Don't put all your eggs into one nest. Make sure that you have more than one party idea per evening. Do your homework, join party scout networks, and cut your losses before the pain becomes unbearable. Most important rule: don't spend the night at hospitals if you don't have to. Babies are being born with or without you camping out in the visiting area.

Don Volcano’s Computer Corner

This could be a candidate for another "Fake or Not?" contest: a website that is a constantly updated catalogue of Entrances to Hell in and around the UK. This site provides Safety Rules for spotting Hell gates ("All Entrances are potentially lethal. If in doubt, don't hang about!") and has a special link to the most popular entrance of the week.

Entrances to Hell
http://www.entrances2hell.co.uk/index.html

I think it's a fake. This is just a little bit too much:

"Worried about Radiation? Try one of our T-Shirts!"

What do you think?

Cheers,
Don Volcano.
